It's a nothing-special-place which makes it perfect in certain situations. If you are looking for a dive or a neighborhood bar where you can sit undisturbed this might really be an alternative for you.. but as for going out in any social setting I wouldn't say this is any place to write home about. I had their pumpkin porter. I knew it was a bad idea even when I ordered. My party was all about to be left to our own devices, so Hanratty's works. Hanrattys is my go to dive bar. You cannot beat 2.50 bud and bud light drafts. Plus it is also an Ohio bar which I can enjoy. Not much of a crowd but it is a fun place to relax. They have real darts and pool tables. So there is plenty to do. The only downside, is the food. I have only tried one thing and that is the mozzarela sticks so do not try them. read more

I've been going to Hanrattys for a couple of years, and it's the best bar in Phoenix. Some people call it a dive bar - I call it your local neighborhood bar. The drinks are cheap and the service is excellent. Megan, Terri and Mikey are the best bartenders around and they drinks are strong. Parking on the weekend can be tough, but you should be able to find a parking spot. If you're an Ohio State game, stop on in during college football games - they are an Ohio state bar. read more

Truly a story of don't judge a book by its cover. This bars downtrodden exterior and signage falls short of the experience and atmosphere they are provide. This place is a dive bar, so that needs to be acknowledged, however in the world of dives this is a great bar in a central location of town. The bartenders are professionals and keep the drinks moving with a decent pour at a great price. They also normally put out some kind of free snacks like nachos or pretzels. The interior is open and spacious. You should have some space to yourself no matter what your party size. The space also houses thee well maintained pool tables, lots of darts, and bar games. I especially love coming here during the summer because they don't skimp on the AC. All in all this bar is a great place to have a cold beer or drink with friends. read more

Blech. I came here to watch an Ohio State game once because it's the "official" bar of the Ohio State alumni club of Phoenix. Yes, it may remind some people of "back home" in the sense that it doesn't possess the beauty of the southwest or any 'big city' sophistication. But what's so great about that? Cash only is a pain in the ass. If you're hungry, knock yourself out with the packaged pretzels/chips or cold sandwiches. Not my cup of tea. And it's carpeted. Eww. I love Hanratty's -- it strikes a balance between dive bar and neighborhood watering hole. Nothing fancy, just a good place to sidle up to after a long night. I've been here a few times and I've never had a great time but never had a bad time either. This is my favorite dive bar in Phoenix! Doesn't hurt that I live within walking distance, but I digress. Terry, one of the bartenders, is the main reason I like going there, she's very friendly and makes a good cocktail, plus will turn up the music if I ask her, which when you're deep in that jukebox game is always appreciated! They have three pool tables and two real dart boards and you usually don't have to wait to get either. Went here when I first turned 21 and had a couple beers with some family. Everytime we ordered drinks, the bartender was very nice and did a great job with how fast she was able to get us our drinks. They have pool tables and some other games so you can pass time while hanging out with friends. TV's are playing the sport games going on. Only downside is the music playing in the background is really quiet. read more

I had a good time here on Saturday until my friend rang up her tab. The female bartender that night was a complete bitch to my friend because she forgot to tip her. It caused my friend to have an anxiety attack, and they ended up calling a cab for her - kicking her out. Granted, we had a few drinks, but it's her job to deal with people's personalities once they've had a few. What made it worse was that my friend tried to let her know she felt terrible and wanted to tip her, but this woman was not interested in calming her down or at least acknowledging that she was sorry. We were getting ready to end the night anyway. Other than that, the male bartender with a beard is nice, he was the one who actually talked to my friend before we left. The actual bar is dark, and the stools are uncomfortable. Parking is small. Because of how the female bartender handled my friend, I will not be returning. I'd be too concerned with pissing off this female bartender. It's not worth the relatively cheap booze they offer. This lady bartender could've handled the awkward situation better. If you give bad service, you don't deserve a tip. And my friend wanted to tip her. Not everyone has the extra cash to support your service job. If you are really concerned about making that extra buck, get a better job, don't take it out on the customer. read more

I grew up in the neighborhood (which I will now call uptown) and must have passed by Hanratty's a jillion times before finally going in to check it out. The bartender informed me that it's been open since the mid-70s, but this was my first time. (Side note: we wanted to go to the hookah bar down the street - 70s Shop or something, but it was so bright inside that just driving by we could see the face of every single person in there! I like my bars darker...makes me look better!). It's your pretty standard dive bar in Hanratty's- pool tables, wood paneling, CHEAP beer, friendly bartenders, juke box, but I thought it was much bigger, cleaner, and newer than most dive bars I've been in. Like a regular bar masquerading as a dive bar....or something. I see some comments on a bad smell ("old tuna" "danky" "dirty toilets"), but I didn't notice one...maybe I accepted one too many free bud lights from the bartender? Either way - a quality place with great service and really cheap drinks right in my 'hood that is worth visiting again. Oh yeah, and another plus is that they didn't cut us off 45 minutes before closing time like many places have a habit of doing. read more
