Hohl in Toano is a great local spot when compared with other close options. I had the Chai, and Pate and my partner had the Cappuccino and Banana Date Bread. My chai was more earthy than spicy and left a little to be desired. The pate was very flavorful and the crust was light and flaky. Definitely the highlight of our meal. The cappuccino was a medium roast made for the masses and mixed well. The banana date bread was very natural tasting with no artificial flavors, however the kitchen heated this up and it was extra toasty/ crispy in the sides which was not as enjoyable. We visited around 9:30 on a Saturday and the place was packed. Seating is limited so get there early and plan to wait. Overall this place has very earthy natural vibes and I could see on a slow weekday it would be a great place to hangout. There's another location in Colonial Williamsburg that we look forward to visiting soon. read more

WOW what a cute little spot north of Williamsburg!! One of the best cafes I've ever tried - everything was good. The staff was so nice even when things got rather busy. There's plenty of parking with their little lot plus the one across the street. I got a matcha latte (heavenly) and the grits & shrooms with added shrimp. The cost was a bit pricy but the serving size made up for it!! Wow it was so much food and their other offerings also looked large and delicious. I came back with a friend and was seriously let down by 6 of the 8 items I ordered. Drink wise I ordered an iced tea and it tasted nothing like an ice tea. Disappointing! Food- ordered the sides and 2 out of the 3 were good! Side salad and mushroom good flavor. Pot roast-inedible due to so much salt! All I could taste was salt! Soup of the day-broccoli cheddar- very liquidy which yes, it is a soup but weird consistency for this kind of soup. When I reheated it at home it thickened up some but not a strong flavor. Desserts-sadly they all were all disappointing! Took them home to have a dessert trip to share with my husband. Looked good but the taste was not there! Brownie- looks like it would have this rich chocolate flavor but it didn't'! Cheesecake- lacked the flavor! Ugh! Chocolate chip cookie was the "best" but literally only had 4 chocolate chips in the whole cookie. The contrast of having salt on the top was not there bc all you could taste was salt cookie. Since my last review, Hohl has opened a shop in Williamsburg. It's actually made the Toano location even better, because the traffic in the Toano shop is much more manageable (it had been suffering from its own success). This is still the best food experience (besides a high-end dinner at a place like Fat Canary) on the whole peninsula. Savory tarts are my favorite. read more

Gorgeous little spot. The staff was incredibly friendly with beautiful smiles. We ordered the dingo and butterscotch latte as well as a sour cherry tart and salted caramel cake. The lattes were lovely. The dingo was perfect for me as it's not too sweet. The butterscotch was too sweet for my liking but my husband did like his choice. The sour cherry tart was delicious. The two things I wasn't fond of was how the to go pastries were packed to go which made it more precarious to carry. It also would have been nice if the tart was offered to be heated. Outside of that everything was lovely. We will definitely return and dine in next time. read more

Came back for the first time here in a year because last time the coffee came 1/2 way through the breakfast, which was awkward. This time I ordered a coffee and a sandwich and took a seat at a table. They came out with a to-go small coffee which I preferred a large but then they came out with a to-go breakfast setup. So now Im awkwardly sitting here eating breakfast with to-go plastic utensils and a huge sandwich in a small box, when everyone else has nice plates and utensils and such. I am a big time foodie and the best breakfast spot is at Hohl. Some of the best and most unique breakfast foods ever! A lot of of the traditional foods with their twist on it. Plus their pastries are to die for! It's not your typical run-of-the-mill food. Very high-quality! If I am not eating breakfast at Hohl, I only make it at my house. I will start off by saying I've been to this location 5 times and each time I am left with the same impression. Not good. The food is over priced and not worth the serving size. Recently had their brownie for $5.50 and could not believe the price for the size and flavor. The Cortado I ordered took a lengthy time to make. I watched the barista make two and dump them. When she finally came over to give me my order she said she wanted it to have foam art. (So she dumped two others due to the art not coming out.) The drink was under extracted and very sour. I have only had one drink made here that wasn't either under or over extracted. Definitely not worth the cost I paid. I couldn't even drink half of it. While on this visit I sat inside till my order was complete. There were 3 other people sitting inside and the whole place was filled with their conversation. It was so loud that I got up and went outside. The acoustics inside are not good. Very noisy, very overstimulating. They make art or very nice pieces to hang to help deaden the noise for restaurants and or shops like this. My other visits I ordered the Avocado toast to which the forgot my over easy eggs. By the time I got them my friends had already eaten their food. I want to live this place to help support small local businesses but I just can't. It just seems like they're in it for the $ and not quality or quantity or that they just don't train their baristas enough. read more

I'm so glad this little gem is in historic Toano. They have done an Amazing transformation of the old building. It gave me to total Hygge vibe with the clean white and wood accent decoration and all the beautiful plants inside. I was most excited for the alternative milk options and vegan options. Something the Williamsburg area is lacking. The young lady at the counter was knowledgeable about vegan options and very pleasant. I would have never thought a vegetable sandwich could be so good but it was incredible. My husband had the slow roasted lamb sandwich and he loved every bite. We were too full for dessert so brought home with us. We also had the iced Chai Latte and Iced Lavender Latte and couldn't be more pleased. Only downside is only open till 4pm would love to pop in after work and take some of this yummy food home for dinner. read more

Yummy! I had to make a pit stop at Hohl and see what the hype with the newest cafe was. What made me most excited is that they carried gluten free options. This building is small and quaint with the cute Toano, VA love you sign on the fence. The atmosphere was welcoming as soon as I walked in. There were 3 gf options: a brownie, Salted Caramel Cake and a muffin. The staff was great in explaining that there is possible cross contamination which I appreciate. I wanted a caffeine free beverage and was sold on the blueberry soda as they make the syrup in house. I also got a slice of Salted Caramel Cake to go. I drank the blueberry soda within 10 minutes it was so tasty! I look forward to going back as there is much more on the menu to explore. read more

I love this little place! I've only gotten food from there a couple of times, but it's been delicious! Their savory tarts are my favorite, but I appreciate this place the most for the coffee. Every beverage I've had from there has been absolutely lovely!
