I love this little place! I've only gotten food from there a couple of times, but it's been delicious! Their savory tarts are my favorite, but I appreciate this place the most for the coffee. Every beverage I've had from there has been absolutely lovely! The same person is usually there working the front when I go, and she puts latte art in my cup every time even though it's a togo order, which is just like--true dedication. What a wonderful experience and find! During our frequent trips to the Williamsburg area, we are always in search of something new, especially when it comes to coffee and food. Located about 15 minutes from Historic Williamsburg is Hohl. The building has a modern updated vibe while preserving so many historic characteristics of the building, making it a perfect stop for some high-quality food and hand-crafted coffee beverages. Upon entering, we were warmly greeted by a younger barista who introduced us to all of the foods and beverages they craft, explaining everything with sincere interest and making an effort to get to know us. We tried a butterscotch oatmilk latte with the avocado toast (loaded with roasted mushrooms, pickled red onion) and topped with micro-greens, poached eggs and a green herb style pesto sauce. Absolutely delicious and hearty! The latte was perfectly crafted (the mircofoam in the latte was top notch!) and even featured some beautiful latte art! The coffee was beautifully presented and came with a side of steamed cream. We also tried a carrot cake style muffin with blueberries and yogurt sauce topping. Delightful and flavorful! The coffee was so good, we even purchased a bag of beans to take with us. We were super impressed with the experience and watched as the barista who helped us actually made conversation with guests leaving and walked them to the door as they left. I highly recommend making this a stop on your trip... we will definately be back on our next trip to Williamsburg in a couple months. read more

Adorable. Beautiful little coffee shop. I had the almond late and missed that it came with a madeleine, both were very good, but it was a modestly sized beverage, might want to order something different if you want more than 8 ounces. The breakfast tart and the savory tart were perfect. Will definitely be back for those too. Large portion of cold brew. Can't speak to anything else at this point but I know I'll be back for a proper meal. Great addition to Toano! read more

Moved to Toano last summer, had wanted to come here. Not impressed with pastries as most, looks like something I can make out of frozen pastry at home. You can get scrambled eggs one way, wet. Had to go up ask for salt/pepper, milk for coffee twice, ended up not drinking coffee was so strong. Asking for any changes seemed out of the question. The place is usually packed and great reviews, just not for our southern family. read more

The food and service excellent, I will definitely be coming back. There was something that I was not happy about . The restaurant is small with very little seating inside. When I went to order my food there were only 2 people eating. The rest were sitting there on their computers and not ordering food. I counted 9 people just sitting there on their computers. This gem of a place is by far the best breakfast cafe, coffee place, and overall restaurant in Williamsburg/Toano. I make the 20 minute drive at least once a week to enjoy the best lavender latte/cappuccino on earth. breakfast dishes are superbly delicious and fresh. my favorites are the Xand eggs, grandpa's omeleT, grits and shrooms with poached eggs, or avocado sauce. so much flavor with the addition of fresh herb sauces. As a foodie, I wish more restaurants would pay attention to all the little details; delicious coffee drinks should always be served in an actual mug while dining in, and food served on actual plates. This quaint coffee bar and restaurant is simply terrific. Cappuccinos are perfectly crafted, and expressos remind me of coffee shops I visited in Italy. Ian, the barrista and one of the shop's first employees (knew and previously worked with Hohl's owner and his wife in Australia) explained they spent days creating the "perfect" process for their coffees. All the baked goods and especially the tarts are truly spectacular. Highly recommend the Peach Tartine and the savory yet sweet fig prosciutto tarts. My daughter and I split the Lamb Sandwich, and we both loved it. Lots of unique and interesting menu items. Their business seems to really be taking off and for good reason. The food and beverages are great, the owner is attentive and trained under Michelin Chef, And the staff is friendly, informed and service is excellent. HIGHLY RECOMMEND! read more

Had been looking forward to trying this place since it opened a few weeks ago. This adorable little place looks like something out of a Hallmark movie. It's so bright and pretty inside and totally inviting. The employee who took my order recommended a long black when I asked for an Americano and explained to me that the drinks were Australian style. I also ordered their tomato and goat cheese tart. My food and drink were brought to my table. The crema on the long black was gorgeous and told me that they knew how to make good espresso drinks. I appreciated the tiny from with my tart as it gave me the opportunity to savor it instead of inhale it like I wanted to after my first bite. The other sweet and savory pastries in their case also make me want to go back to try them.If that pastry I ate is any indication of their cooking and baking talent, I can't wait for their breakfast and lunch options to debut. read more

We were completely charmed by Hohl on a morning visit. The house is airy and lovely with great indoor and outdoor space. The staff were very warm and friendly and attentive to our allergy concerns. Everything we saw was beautifully presented. Our lavender latte and hot chocolate were delicious, and the sourdough toast we ordered for our toddler was fresh and yummy with tasty choices for spreads. Feels like a little oasis. Have mixed opinion about this restaurant. Food was decent, but menu limited. It appeared that there 3-4 choices of what were essentially the same ingredients. Unfortunately it is also located in a number of miles from main area. I will say that their baked goods are excellent. It is nice to have somewhere that does have vegetarian choices. Hohl is my new favorite place to go for "just" cappuccino or for breakfast and coffee or for lunch! Living in the part of James City County beyond The Pottery and even past Norge and all the way to beautiful downtown (?) Toano is a modest frame house transformed into a neat, welcoming, attractive bistro. Hohl can easily be missed as you travel down Route 60 through Toano so keep alert. It is set back from the street next to a large parking lot and it has plenty of off street parking too. The service is friendly and attentive and the food and drinks are executional and unusual.....no donuts, huge muffins or cookies! My favorite breakfasts so far are the avocado toast and the hearty oatmeal. Ian makes the very best authentic Italian cappuccino I have enjoyed since I said ciao to Roma! My favorite sandwich anywhere id the lamb sandwich. Try it if you love lamb as much as I do! The setting, location, menu and gracious hospitality of Hohl is worth the ride to my side of town.....Toano! read more

Today I had a lovely morning with a new mama friend and we went to Hohl for breakfast. This tiny gem is located in Toano and the name Hohl comes from the idea that their food nourishes the "whole" body. They tend to use organic ingredients and offer gluten free options as well. When you walk in, the people remember you by name and are super friendly. They take the time to talk to you instead of the rush of a typical coffeehouse. It's inviting and personal. I had an iced mocha with oat milk and butterscotch syrup. My friend had a matcha latte. We both enjoyed their delicious salted caramel cake with homemade granola. It had a nice crunch to it and the taste was one to remember. This was the same cake I bought for my dad for his birthday. There's a salted caramel drizzle and dried berries that sit on top. I did enjoy a breakfast pastry that had sweet fig, sun-dried tomatoes, and a hint of goat cheese. It was delightful and a perfect way to start the day. They just expanded their breakfast menu and while I didn't try their pancakes this go around, they did rave about it especially if you love blueberries. read more
