Pulled pork with a side of coleslaw and potato salad.
    Justin U.

My life is consumed with a search for the perfect pulled pork sandwich. One where the pork is unbelievably tender, with flavor that doesn't need barbecue sauce and that has absolutely zero fat. Ninety eight percent of the sandwiches I've tried have disappointed me. I did find one in Illinois and thought there was only one in Colorado until I happened upon Hogback. After lunching there more than once I can promise you their pulled pork (and other barbecued meats) will blow your mind and excite your taste buds like few others. It easily passes my scrutiny.

Really really good food, decent service. Busy for the area so that has to tell you something. Great sauces but you have to ask for extra because they don't keep them at the table in bottles. The service was a little on the slow side but super friendly.

4.5/5. 2nd time for lunch. Pretty busy keeping the waitresses busy but they were doing fine. Ribs were really good, hot link really good, wings with Aisan glaze were good, beans were good, brisket was good but not as good the last time. I like their 3 homemade sauces.

Pretty good place for beer and some wings. The wings had a nice smoke flavor and I chose the Thai sweet sauce. Limited beer on tap selection. Could have used a bit more crispness on the flash fried wings since I ordered them crispy. Will be back to try a few other things.

I really love the Hogback Barbecue. It's tucked into a small older strip center on Depew. I always access it via Chatfield and Wadsworth just past the traffic circle at 470. They have a small bar, a patio and an indoor dining room. They have always been super friendly to me whether I'm dining in or doing takeout. Parking is in the lot of the strip shopping center, but there might be a little street parking also. They don't have fancy packaging, just foil and clamshell containers, but the food is awesome! You can tell they smoke it a long time and slowly. Sides are delicious too! We did takeout today with a rack of ribs and half chicken so we could have leftovers! We also ordered settlers beans and some green chili to also have for leftovers!! I like everything I've had here, brisket, pork, ribs and chicken. They have a variety of sauces that you can use there or take in your carry out. Every time I come early in the day, I get their iced tea which is always fresh and delicious! I wouldn't classify it as a dive; and it's not fancy. It's just a nice fast casual no frills place to grab lunch or dinner. It's been 20 minutes since I ate my food; and I'm wondering when I can dig into the leftovers, haha!

Pickles -- cornmeal breading and not thick. So depends on what you like! Not at all greasy. Firm dill pickles. Cornbread - delicious and very cake like. Moist Ribs -- great meat. Meaty ribs. Delicious flavor. Fall off the bone in the good way. Sauces -- very good. Pulled pork -- soo good. Didn't have a bunch of fat in it. Great flavor. Moist.

Just wasn't a fan of anything really. The place is clean, the service is good but the food was a bit tough, greasy and bland. The waffle fry nachos were just covered in cheddar cheese with no flavor. The pork was dry, the wings were tough and the potato salad had way too many onions. The Carolina bbq sauce was pretty good though.

I'm sure it's pretty tough to make these as tender as they were, but I was very happy with the results. I also had the pulled pork which was juicy and delicious and the brisket, which is always great. What may have impressed me the most was the grits. I also highly recommend going there on a weekend to get their three dollar Sammie. Don't think you'll beat that price anywhere for a solid amount of meat.

The employee taking orders didn't know much about the sides (when my friend asked about the beans he just showed them to him instead of explaining what they have in them or if he likes them). I asked about the grits and another employee had to chime in that they were good. We both ordered the combo which includes a drink and side. We waited for a while for our food and went in after a while to see if everything was ready. They seemed flustered and told us the food would be right out. Granted there were a few people ahead of us but less than 5 total. The real McCoy sandwich was REAL dry. It comes with burnt ends and the bison green Chile and cheddar sausage (used to have pork as well) and their regular or buffalo sauce helped but not enough to overcome the dryness of the meats. The andouille & corn grits were fine as well. The sausage gives it a nice pop but the grits were more like potatoes in consistency. The best part was the Boylans ginger ale. Bummed Roaming Buffalo wasn't what I had previously. May come back but with other BBQ options it may be a while.

That's what you expect when you're paying barbecue prices. Sadly, none of that showed up here. The brisket and burnt ends were the biggest disappointment. Instead of having that dark bark and beautiful smoke ring you expect from meat that's been smoked low and slow, everything looked gray and lifeless. There was no smoke flavor, no seasoning, and worst of all, the meat was dry. Not slightly dry, but the kind where you need sauce just to get it down. Burnt ends are usually the highlight of a barbecue meal, crispy outside with juicy, tender meat inside. These were just dry chunks with no caramelization or flavor payoff. The sausage didn't help things either. Overall, nothing about the meal felt homemade or smoked. It felt mass produced and rushed, missing the flavor and texture that make barbecue special in the first place. What made the experience even worse is the price. Spending around $40 on a pound of meat, expecting quality barbecue, and getting dry, bland food instead. For that price, you expect memorable barbecue, not something you regret ordering halfway through the meal. The food was so disappointing that I ended up throwing most of it away and going somewhere else afterward just to get a decent meal. That's something I almost never do, especially after paying premium prices.
