Atmosphere and service get a perfect score. It's busy in there so clearly Hodak's is beloved. The chicken on the other hand leaves a lot to be desired. Hodak's is of those STL traditions that locals and visitors enjoy. It's all about the fried chicken, but also the good times and friendly people. Usually, we go as a family, a party of 4-10 people. Sometimes there is a wait, but we have never had an issue outside of what I consider the normal "find a table for 10 and get it set up" wait. This isn't a fancy place. There's a large bar, beer signs, and lots of wood that makes the inside a little dim, but honestly, that IS Hodak's. Changing it would change the nostalgia. Come as you are. This IS NOT health food. Their appetizers are the holy grail of bar food - 8-10 different ways to get bone-in and boneless wings, mini tacos, jalapeno poppers, pretzel bites, fried mushrooms, potato skins, and of course Toasted Ravioli. They have A TON of sandwiches, a couple of soups, and 6 or 7 salads. But their motto "Fried & True" let's you know it's all about the delicious, perfectly fried chicken. Their sides are impressive. They include slaw, veg of the day, baked potato, baked beans, potato salad, and pickled beets, but I recommend going all-in with mashed potatoes and gravy, onion rings, and mac-n-cheese. They have daily specials, but specials are only available during lunch hours. I want to say 3:00pm or until it's gone is the cut-off time for specials. We ordered take out for our last visit. It was a little challenging to navigate the website order, so I went old-school and called. It was super-easy to order over the phone. If picking up - Once inside, look for the pick up window to the left of the bar. The take out staff was just as friendly as the dine in staff. Everything needed was in the bag. Food was hot and delicious once home. I read over their menu while the food was boxed up. Used to come here a lot when we lived in STL. Now, it's one of our have to dinner spots. Partly cause the food. Partly cause the memories, partly cause on Kenny the bartender. First visit here and really enjoyed our lunch! Our server (Jose) was as friendly and very helpful. He explained the the portions of the fried mushrooms was huge and that a half was more than enough for the 2 of us. He was right! Huge portion and tasty! Not frozen. We were a party of 12 this past weekend and our server treated us with so much care and love. She was the sweetest person ever, I wish I got her name! The fries were perfect and the green beans with onion were delicious. My wife had the chicken with mashed potatoes and green beans. She said the potatoes with the brown gravy was very good. Can you say Fried Chicken is awesome? After a dinner at Hodak's you definitely will! This is arguably the best fried chicken in St. Louis, probably in Missouri and maybe in the US (I think there may be some places in the Deep South but I've not eaten in them. Hodak's is known for their fried chicken and it's definitely finger-liken good as a Kentucky Gentleman once said. The breading is crispy and thin - not clogged and gluttony on some large chains products. It was made to eat with your hands and the meat is really juicy. The steamed veggies were great, as were the fries. Our server was attentive, kept the cold beer coming, and laughed with us. Fried mushrooms are great here. As for the chicken, it's not my jam; it's over battered in my opinion - just personal preference. Sides such as mashed potatoes and slaw are good (skip French fries). Today we sampled their Fried Chicken Wings, Sticky Wings, Potato Skins and Fried Mushrooms. Portion size plentiful for sharing. The fried breaded Wings were large and good tasting; altho i've had other wings I prefer more, they've been serving these a long time and I wasn't used to dipping my own hot sauce (usually tossed in), but i liked 'em. The Sticky Wings were Sweet and Tangy (similar to Teriyaki type flavor), but made a nice variety to sample. The "shrooms" platter was simple and plentiful, and xtra tasty dipped in Ranch! Hodak's is a south city comfort food restraunt that's been a long time fixture at this Gravois location. The fried chicken is good...not my favorite...but good. The fries are very good. I prefer a creamy - not vinegar type slaw. The major change I'd recommend is the ability to order all white, or all dark meat. They only have wings, or 1/2 chicken option. I will pay an up charge and happy to do so for all white. Nice warm inside with fun local decor. Staff was quick and pleasant. Fried chicken is a bit like pizza - everyone has their favorites. I can't believe this was my first time eating at Hodak's! Apparently everyone knows about it but me! So most of my pictures, the food has already been tasted b/c we chowed down and I forgot to take pics! There was a group of 7 of us and when you arrive it's a find a seat anywhere kind of place. It's big and spacious and we found a table to accommodate us right away. The service was awesome! We never once had to ask for a refill! Let me tell you I consider myself an ice tea connoisseur! This tea was freshly brewed- so good!! We ordered 2 different appetizers; the fried mushrooms and the sticky wings. They both were delicious! I had the chicken fried chicken which is a breaded chicken breast with white gravy, mashed potatoes and corn. It came with coleslaw. I'm not a big fan of vinegar coleslaw but my Mom is and she loved it. She had chicken strips and loved them. My brother had the wing dinner and he raved about it. Another one of us had fried ravioli and they devoured that. My husband raved about the fries. Very crispy and crunchy like fried twice kind of fries. My brother had the queso Mac and cheese. It was really good! Just a hint of spice and very good. My Mom had the baked beans and that and the coleslaw is the only thing I wouldn't order again. The coleslaw b/c it's vinegar based so that's an acquired taste and the baked beans. Everything else was sooo good!! The pies tasted like Grandma had been back there cooking all day! So delicious! We had the chocolate cream pie, the coconut meringue cream pie and lemon meringue pie. They have cheesecake also but no one tried that. The parking lots are big and so there is easy parking to the side and in the back. You can see the arch from the restaurant. Prices are normal and reasonable. We will definitely go back!
