I have been using to Ho'oala for maybe 2 decades. Even if I moved away and return back home to Hawaii. I always headed on back and recommended people there for all services. I just can't do it. I don't want my friends, family or clients to experience something like that. The customer service at the front has just continues to decline. It's sad, because I love my stylist but I can't tolerate the rudeness and lack of customer service. I mentioned it to my stylist which I know is out of her control. She recommended I use online to avoid having to use the reception for assistance. But a few times the site crashed on me with an oops message. This review is not to place blame just to fairly warn that if you are choosing to go here please don't have the expectation that customer service at the reception desk is wonderful...otherwise I love Ho'ala! read more

I was in great hands... Whenever I need some me time I can always rely on Ho'ala Salon and Spa which is located in Ala Moana Center Level 3 right beside Neiman Marcus I have done a few other spa services which I highly do recommend it's usually hair services that I keep coming back to. As they've gone through several changes which they're now known as Ho'ala I'm happy that it's still here as the mall location is very convenient with lots of free parking and the vibe here is very relaxing and calming. Needing a last minute service as that's how I usually roll they had the time that I needed and was perfect...Augusto! He was my stylist and what a lovely and vibrant vibe especially this was the late afternoon after work so I was tired and only Augusto has me bouncing for my self care time. He's an absolute delight and I highly recommend him as I gave hime my wish list which is basically just the length kept desired and left it to him to decide which many fights back on me but he just rolled with it with some suggestions and got my hair looking fresh and bouncy. If I could give this place zero stars, I would. I hadn't gotten my hair done in a long time, so when I first came in and got Blanca, I was thrilled. She's an absolute sweetheart and did SUCH an amazing job--my hair looked beautifully sun-kissed, exactly what I wanted. When I returned, I had a different stylist and expected the same level of quality. He was very nice, but the results were disappointing. My hair didn't match the inspiration photos at all and came out even more orange than before. He kept talking about a new product line he was using, which honestly made me feel like a test subject. I tried to give it a chance, but as the color "settled," it only got more orange. I came back again for a touch-up because I was unhappy, and somehow it looked worse--still orange, just slightly closer to the vibe I originally wanted. I tried to stay positive because obviously they couldn't undo the damage. I reached out for a refund because my hair was dry, over-processed, and nowhere near what I paid for--especially with an upcoming trip. Scotty, the "manager," told me he didn't want to issue a refund but wanted a stylist to fix it so I'd stay a returning customer. I agreed and specifically asked for Blanca since she did amazing work before. While on speakerphone, he said he could squeeze me in before closing to fix what he could and to come back again after my trip. When I called back later, he suddenly claimed I was twisting his words and being "hostile," just because I stood firm on what he had told me. I asked to speak to the general manager, and he said she'd tell me the same thing but was "in a meeting" and would call me back. It's been days, and I've heard nothing. Completely unprofessional. My hair was chopped beyond belief. I don't even know how this could happen. I got the "senior stylist" Scotty. He was supposed to be experienced but I left there with crazy orange streaks with a green tint and a botched haircut. When I called to get a refund the manager handled it in the most terrible way and basically told me I was a liar and the receptionists said my hair looked great when I left which is not true because he ruined my hair so bad that he made me leave with wet hair in a braid. So they wouldn't have even seen my hair. I ended up spending close to $400 to get it fixed somewhere else but they couldn't do much for the cut. This Salon completely destroyed my hair. This is the first salon I went to after moving to Oahu. Being an Aveda Salon I had high hopes. For at least 20 years I have only used Aveda Salons. I first had my highlights touched up and then went back to the same Stylist 4 weeks later for a Japanese Straight Perm. I've had straightening treatments done twice a year for probably close to 15 years and always had great results. Apparently you cannot have the Japanese Straight Perm performed on hair that has bleach/highlights in it. I did not know this but my Stylist should have. She had just touched up my highlights 4 weeks prior. After the product was placed on my hair it soon started frying my hair. My hair turned into wet noodles and was coming out in clumps. Instead of trying to get another Stylist to come help her or try to fix what was happening at all, the Stylist finished the treatment, cut 6" off of my hair and roughly blowdried my hair, yanking even more clumps of dead hair out. She then went between telling me that my results were normal to saying that it was my fault for scheduling the appointment if I had highlights in my hair. My phone was dead so I had one of the employees take a picture of the huge pile of hair that had fallen out, a pictures of my hair, and a picture of the bald spot that the treatment had caused. I obviously refused to pay the $400+ for the appointment. I spoke to the Salon Manager the next day and he said he would give me weekly conditioning treatments for 4 weeks and products. I appreciate the effort but none of that changed the condition of my hair or improved it at all. My hair is ruined. I have cut off approx 14" so far and I still have a good 6" that is dead. It will take at least 8 years to grow back the length I had. I also cannot color my hair until all of the dead is gone so I now have short hair with very visible roots. To say I am devastated is an understatement. I have called the Salon and asked for the pictures that they took to be sent to me and they refuse. I have asked to speak to the owner of the salon and 6 weeks later have still never received a phone call from them. This is not how you treat a customer whose life you have drastically effected. So although there is nothing I can do to repair the damage that has been done to my hair, I hope that my review will help others not to go there and also have their hair ruined. I will post pictures of my hair in the months leading up to my hair appointment and pictures of my hair in the last 6 weeks since the appointment. I'd include pictures of the day in the salon when the damage first happened, but of course, they are refusing to give me those pictures. read more

On my journey to find another hairstylist to do my hair a couple years back .. don't ask .... I realized that I had one in my circle. I couldn't believe that I didn't think of him!! His name ... Augusto :D He was at another salon prior to here and I had followed him from there. I honestly can tell he is thriving there!!! I love it!!! However, that's a different review!! Anyway, I think he's been with Ho'ala for a year .. don't quote me on that. But this place is amazing!! Ho'ala is located on the 3rd floor right next to Neiman Marcus at Ala Moana. As soon as I walk in the girls in the front are very quick to get you checked in. If your stylist isn't ready for you yet, you can sit behind reception in the waiting room where they offer you coffee, tea or water. To be honest ... the back part reminds me of Paul Brown for some reason ... The atmosphere is very relaxed, very chill. Which is what you want going in. Nobody wants to be all manic while getting work done on themselves. But ... they not only do hair ... but also nails, facials, waxing and massages!! I thought they closed and now on anniversary trip with wife we decided to stop at Al's Moana for some shopping. I tried yelping and couldn't find under massage but still decided to stop by and WOW! They are still here, what a great surprise. This was always my favorite massage place. We booked massages for two. Really excited for this! Will update after. The massage was great. I have visited this salon a number of times, but as of late, I have been growing out my hair to donate to keiki. In preparation, I called, and Maile was amazingly friendly, helping me select someone who had taken the steps for hair prep (because various charities have different rules). I knew the most important factor was that I cut off as much as possible knowing short hair isn't my thing, but little keiki hoped for longer wigs. Maile saw on my file that I had been to one of the top short hair stylists and talked through the options, and we selected Masami, who did an amazing job. I highly recommend this place in general. This go was just a bit more special. This is an Aveda salon offering multiple services on the 3rd floor of the Ala Moana Mall next to Nieman Marcus. They have a great selection of products for purchase and I believe you may shop there, but services are by appointment only. I have had luck getting appointments within 24 hours! I booked online for the Stress Fix Massage for 75 minutes. Stephanie was great and she was amazing on fixing my stress. I did like their space and how relaxing the environment was. The changing room / bathroom was very clean. The front desks people wanted to keep charging me more money, which I was skeptical as to why. They called me up around 5:30pm and asking me that I still have a balance of $150. I'm not sure what happened but I encountered a very disappointing experience today at this salon. Green hair and a stained forehead! Upon arrival I explained to the stylist that I will be traveling for medical treatment and will not be able to visit the salon for another five to six months. I brought in two photos to show the stylist and communicated the best that I could while having realistic expectations. An hour and a half later, I looked in the mirror to discover that my hair had a green tinge to it with no highlights and hair dye had stained my forehead. I said three times that my hair was too dark and the stylist told me to "sit with it a few days and then decide." Unfortunately I don't have that option because I will be on an airplane. I left and drove straight to Target to purchase a box of hair dye to try to lighten up my hair and somehow get rid of the green tinge and the stain on my forehead. I am extremely upset and can not believe that I paid $288.33 for this terrible mess! The stylist knew that my hair was green because she kept trying to wash it out at the basin. If I wasn't going to the hospital and already have other things on my mind, I would have asked to speak to a manager. I went in as a walk in on a Saturday to get a "Quick Fix" massage. I should have gone somewhere else. It was my first time there and I've always wanted to try a spa service with them. The front area was inviting and calming. No one was looking around and they didn't have a wait. I thought that was really nice. The ambiance in the back was just as relaxing. I was given water before I went in since I was a little parched. What raised red flags was when the woman administering my massage wouldn't leave the room. She indicated for me to take off my jewelry and then asked for me to lie down, with, my, clothes on, on the table. She then begin to place pressure on different points around my spine and side. Sometimes squeezing my shoulders and neck. But that was it. No hands moving muscles around to improve circulation, no stretching, no oils on my back to help massage out any knots. She did ask if the pressure was ok early on, which I said it was. But I was expecting a massage, not pressing. And it wasn't pressing with the palms either. It was pressing with knuckles and fingers. I wanted to cry because I really try to take more time for self care but I rarely have time to do it and this was not the massage I thought it was going to be. After she was done she apologized and said, "sorry it's only for 25 minutes" and I thought to myself if that was the service for just 25 minutes why would people want to come for an hour or more? I left the spa feeling disappointed and still with lots of knots in my back and neck area. I will NOT be back. I felt that the experience and my money were wasted on such a lack of service. If you go please confirm what you will be getting and your expectations. Don't think that because it's listed as a massage that you will get it. read more

You get the usuals; tea, robe, lockers, slippahs... The steam room was out, and there could have been a bench or chair in the dressing room, but who cares when you get a massage by Terri. I have been coming to Hoala Spa off/on for many years. Overall, you can count on the services to be satisfactory. I booked the new thermal lymphatic drainage facial and had an excellent therapist. She was understanding, gentle, and soothing. Three stars because the facial specifically lists cupping as one of the techniques used during this facial. I asked about it (just to make sure I didn't sleep through it if that's even possible), but my therapist said that using the hands is the recommended technique and cupping was an extra service (add on?). It was still a lovely facial, but there is so little listed under the service description in their Menu and if it is listed, it should be given or that is false advertising. I'm kind of a stickler for getting what is said I'll be getting. As for the environment, it is very calm and relaxing, however, very compact. My regular stylist is out of the country so I needed to get in somewhere else. I went to Ho ala Salon for trim and root touch up. Scotty was my stylist and I must say I was impressed with his attention to detail. He ask me a ton of questions and was good at listening. From the time I walked in until the time I left 2 hours sped by. It is a very nice salon and service is good. I feel Scotty is in big demand and worth getting. The salon is more expensive than where I normally go, actually twice the price. I did know that going in so it is not a complaint, just saying check prices. I got a gel manicure done on Sat evening for an event I was attending & one nail started peeling on Monday. Having purposely chosen this higher end salon (although not conveniently located near me), I was confused how the product could peel so soon. This is my go to salon! I've come in a few times now but today really sealed the deal. It's been months since my last hair cut. In the meantime I've bleached my own hair (mistake) and tried to color correct with box dye. It had been washing out and lightening at the beach, leaving me looking washed out and hair that was too warm for me. It didn't look horrible but the ends were dry and I had some banding going on from the bleaching. I went in wanting my hair to look healthy so that I can continue to grow it out. I was also considering doing some lightening but after my consultation with Elise, we decided on evening it out, knowing my hair will lighten at the beach and in the ocean. I wanted a trim and some face framing layers after trying to trim my own and she worked wonders! I'm so happy with my hair, it looks so natural and has so much more shape and movement! I'm torn about my latest experience at Ho'ala Salon. I've been coming here since 2015, albeit I only get my hair cut twice a year. This past time was one of the best hair cuts I've had at Ho'ala, and for a decent price. The interaction with the hairdresser, however, left me so upset I'm debating whether or not to ever go back to that salon again. Worried that another lockdown for the island is imminent, I called as soon as they opened and asked for the earliest appointment they had, which turned out to be 30 minutes later. I really had to rush to get there and the extent of me doing my hair was brushing it at stoplights and then tossing it into a messy bun (this description is necessary for what happened at the appointment). I was impressed by the new safeguards the salon had in place. The only downer (that I anticipated anyway) was that you no longer get water or tea during your appointment since you need to keep your mask on. Then my met my hairdresser. We got off on the wrong foot to start off with by her asking me if I was pregnant. Nope, I'm not and I'm sensitive about the weight gain I've put on lately. I'm definitely not small and I don't mean to be catty, but I would actually say I was around the same size as the hairdresser that asked the question. In any case, I tried to put it behind me. Then she found the only other thing I'm really sensitive about, the strands of white hair I have... most of which I never had before March 2020, but it is what it is. Ironically, the main reason I wanted a hair cut was so that I could start dyeing my hair and not worry about having to dye so much of it. However, I never mentioned anything about coloring my hair at Ho'ala, just described the length of the cut I wanted. The hairdresser spent the next 90 minutes finding different ways to comment on my white hair strands. Everything from "you've NEVER thought about dyeing it before?!" to deciding that when I came back she would "use caramel to color all the white strands so [I] look better." And keep in mind, this was pretty much a one-sided conversation. Other than explaining that I currently hadn't been coloring my hair because I had been breastfeeding I just made "hmm" noises or tried to change the subject. She made comments that made my inner feminist cringe. The more she talked it became clear that she had a 1950s attitude about the roles of men and women in the home and couldn't contemplate anything more modern than that (she assumed only my husband graduated from college for example). She even ended the appointment by telling me that now my hair looked good for my husband. It was clear she thought I had no idea how to look presentable (I'm assuming this relates back to my mad-dash to get my appointment in 30 minutes and the state of my messy bun, but who knows). She told me that I should put in some anti-frizz product in my hair before I go to Ho'ala next time. Huh? I know this wasn't my best look, but I have never once made my hair nice for a hair appointment... since that's what I'm paying them for isn't it? She mentioned at the end that she had enough time to dry my hair since generally, it would just have been the cut only. WHAT? It's an Aveda salon. I could have gotten a $15 haircut at supercuts if I didn't want a fancy blowout. I realized halfway through the appointment that I was sitting there tense with my nails digging into my skin and my hands in tight fists. It's really too bad the whole experience was so miserable for me because it really was a great haircut. read more

Let me start by saying Janelle has a new FOREVER client!! I came into the Salon excited, but extremely nervous because this would be the very first time I ever did a color treatment to my hair. I scoped out her instagram (@avedahairbyjanelle) and picked out a few favorites. Janelle was so kind and honest about what the possibilities were for my hair when it came to the color I wanted to achieve. And by the end, it came out even better than what I was expecting! Even when she asked me about my cut; Janelle listened and did exactly what I wanted, which was to keep as much length as possible with a few added layers. From start to finish Janelle and Taiyo (who btw gave me the best shampoo treatment of my life) treated me like a queen in that chair. I've been to numerous salons, seen countless hair stylists but let me tell you Janelle is on another level. Thursday, ~1 pm: I make an in-person appointment for a pedicure. Regular? She asks. I respond: No, definitely *gel* since I will be arriving in shoes and socks. Saturday, 9:50 am: I wait for my 10 am appointment. The nail technician calls me in at 10:20, says she didn't know I booked for gel and will have to do a regular pedicure which requires a 2-hour wait before I can put my shoes and socks back on. I cannot walk more than 10 steps in their makeshift slippers, so a regular pedicure is out of the question. I had a busy schedule that day. I've been going there for 15 years or so, and have enjoyed the treatments, kindness and professionalism of the other aestheticians. The spa is really pricey but I love your Aveda products and quiet ambiance. Of course, I can never go back. Expensive spas take your cc and have strict rules if you cancel or no-show. But what about when the spa cancels? This poorly managed operation canceled my appointment suddenly because of their own negligence and tried to make it look like it was my fault. I had no rights.
