Took someone here for their birthday. It's been over a year since we have visited this location. Basically got the same meals that we had gotten before. The gyoza was OK but a bit dry. Peanut butter chicken was one of the dishes ordered. While the coating and the sauce were good, the chicken was extremely dry and hard to chew. The birthday girl ordered salmon which she has loved in the past, but it now comes swimming in soy sauce. She did not like it at all. Quite enjoyed my meal at Hiro. We didn't have reservations but we got in pretty much right away on a Monday night before Christmas which was great. My drink was very tasty and the edamame is always good. We got some gyoza too for an app and it was perfect to split between two people. Might be the worst sushi I've ever had. I ordered some extra food so I would have some for lunch tomorrow and barely had anything to eat tonight. 3/4 dishes went in the trash. I ordered the tsunami roll and the shrimp, unagi (eel) on top were both dry and super old tasting. The smoked salmon on top the texture and flavor was very off. Had a bite of the roll and $21 went to waste. So irritating. Even the ginger on the side was dried out!! I tried the husker roll. This was also barely edible. Large portion of rice with barely any flavor. Packed in the SAME CONTAINER as the disgusting tsunami roll. I tossed both because of my concern with how bad the salmon smelled. Thanks for the cross contamination Hiro 88! Another $10 lost. I thought the seaweed salad would be better and was wrong again. Slimy brown pieces of old seaweed. WTF??? Can any of the things I ordered have come fresh?? ANOTHER $10 in the trash. I finally got to the crab Rangoon and this was the ONLY EDIBLE portion of the $70 I spent here. I came with two friends and we each got 2 rolls and shared crab rangoon for about $22 each. Our server was very nice and friendly. It wasn't very busy around 1 pm which surprised me. Everything I had was so good! The reason for 4 stars instead of 5 would be that we got our crab rangoon before getting our waters. I thought the service was good but not great. We were greeted right when we got in and were quickly seated. All of the workers were very nice. The crab rangoon is definitely one of my favorite things and was inhaled very quickly which is why there isn't a photo of it in all its glory. The place has very elegant decor and is very classy. I came here during happy hour with a few friends and we opted to sit at the bar. We had fantastic service at the bar. We went with a few apps, and sushi of course. Wow I was seriously impressed with the beef tips sort of app, it could have been my entree. I typically go for the crab rolls with the eel, or sweet sauce on top and they do a great job on this as well. It was a little dark inside so my photos didn't turn out well, but that's my error. If you're in the old market, I would encourage you to venture this way, there is more parking. read more

It's probably been a really long time since I reviewed Hiro 88 because usually we do Sunday take out happy hour sushi which doesn't necessarily lend itself well to photos. Hard to believe that back in the day we used to do reverse happy hour at 10 PM both here and at the West location... Feels like a lifetime ago because now my dinner times are more inclined towards 5 PM. And if yours are too and you want to come on Sunday for all day happy hour make sure you either have a reservation or show up about 45 minutes to an hour earlier than you actually want to eat. We put our name in and walk down the street for a beer and some candy our table was actually ready sooner. (I just didn't get the text). Everything was great but the pace of the sushi was pretty slow because as you would expect they are very busy on all day happy hour days... So I think for now we will probably just resume takeout services or show up at an even earlier dinner time. But one thing is for sure we will be back again and again. We've not been to this location before, but we're in town before a concert and decided to give it a try. Ambiance is nice. Not fancy, but not really shorts and tank top either. Somewhere in the middle. Let's start with the good. Happy hour prices are very good! And quite a selection to choose from. Beer and wine choices are decent. Now, the bad and ugly. Service started good but seemed to taper off the longer we were there. And it wasn't busy. Like 3:30 on a Thursday. Staff was very nice and pleasant, just not fast or super responsive. Appetizers were fine. Sushi rolls were fine, but didn't taste as fresh as I'm used to. And I'm from iowa so it's not that I'm bragging about living on the coast with ultra fresh seafood or anything like that. Everything came out fairly fast. But...we did order some lo mein with our rolls and never got that. Turns out the waitress forgot to order that part once our rolls were ready. Fortunately we had enough to eat with all the other stuff we didn't need the lo mein, but please. The waitress did apologize for forgetting the dish and it was fine, but... We asked for the check and she brought out her iPad deal to ring us up and the table only to discover she grabbed the one unit that was broken. It took her over 5 minutes to come back with another. I'm frustrated at this point, but tried not to let on. I finally got paid and left. This is not a bad place, it just didn't impress me. Perhaps my hopes we're built up by some friends. Regardless, the quality of the sushi is still not what I'm used to eating elsewhere. If I had to pay non-happy hour prices I'd be pretty irritated. Recently ate at hero 88 in downtown Omaha. When we arrived it was very busy but it was during a happy hour on a Friday early evening. We had about you 30 minute wait And got in at about 30 minutes as well. We ordered some tuna and smoked salmon as well as a hero 88 special sushi roll. The sushi roll was excellent and everything I had hoped for, although some of the sushi pieces were extremely large and a little hard to handle in one big bite, lol My friend with me ordered the smoked salmon and the tuna which I was not too fond of but that's just my personal preference. I prefer sushi rolls over raw salmon and raw sushi by itself. Our waitress was very pleasant and nice and the food was just fine. I visited the downtown Hiro 88 on Sunday lunch with my family. We enjoyed the seaweed salad and crab Rangoon appetizers and each got a 3 item bento box for lunch. The bento box also came with a salad or soup. I enjoyed the sesame dressing on the salad. For the bento box, I tried the beef teriyaki, salmon sashimi and spicy salmon roll. I would say that the sushi here was not impressive to me. The quality of the fish didn't taste very fresh. I liked the flavor of the teriyaki sauce but thought that the beef was not very tender. Our server was very friendly and was very timely with everything-she was great! Overall, I enjoyed the appetizers here, but came for sushi and was disappointed in the quality of the fish.
