Hing Lung aka Ichi Ramen aka Hing Lung Ramen. IYKYK This place has to be among the best authentic Cantonese restaurants in the area with fairly reasonable prices. It's a no frills spot that gets jam packed with customers on nights and weekends. What we get: - Beef and tendon rice noodle roll: This is the dish to get. Yes, it's rich, but the tender chunks of beef and the rice noodle rolls are amazing. - Teriyaki beef and mushroom: This is probably the worst possible name for this dish, but it's ultra tender pieces of beef with mushrooms and green beans. It's on the pricier side (18.95?) but definitely worth getting. - Salt toasted spareribs: A little bit of salt, a little bit of jalapeno and a lot of flavor and goodness. Definitely something to get - Congee: Congee, you say? They make their congee and it comes steaming hot in a claypot. Tons of varieties to choose from and none too salty. Since Covid, they had loss a lot of business. You no longer have to wait in line to be seated. We were seated in the middle of the room. We ordered two dishes: * Pan fried rice vermicelli with ground beef * Porridge After ordering, a young couple was seated by the wall. Behind them was where they kept the chinese fried donuts inside a glass cabinet. I was chatting with my wife and all of a sudden, I noticed the male gentleman that was just seated bounced right out of his seat and would not sit down. I looked to see what he was looking at. He was looking at a coach roache that was crawling against the wall where his table was. The gentleman had to flag down a waitress. Using a napkin the waitress smashed and removed it. He sat back down afterward, but with a weary feeling. Afterwards they had setup a large table for a group of people next to us. There were 7 of them. Only a couple sat down, as they were waiting for the rest of the 5 people to show. They ordered and later the rest of the group showed. By now, our porridge dish had arrived. It was really bland and we had to ask for some salt. While we were consuming the porridge, a lot of dishes were being served to the table of 7. We were still waiting for our final dish of Pan Fried Rice Vermicelli. Then, I saw the waitress bring the pan fried rice vermicelli with ground beef along with another dish in her hand. She placed both dished in the table of 7. I stopped her afterwards and with a gentle voice, I said, "I think that pan fried rice vermicelli is ours, as we got here 1st and had ordered before the table of 7. One of the guys sitting at the table of 7, insisted that it belongs to their table. I was not going to argue over the dish with him. So then, I hear the kitchen staff asking, "there were supposed to be two orders of the pan fried?" The waitress answered yes. We waited some more (another 20 minutes) and every other customer were getting their orders served. I finally have to tell the waitress to just give me the check, as I didn't want to wait any longer. So, I want to elaborate: * If you were a waitress and your customer complaint that she served your dish to the wrong table, would be be apologetic? * Would you go to the kitchen and ensure that the cooks immediately work on that dish 1st before working any other order that's on their radar? So here's what happen, after we confronted the waitress about her placing our dish to the wrong table..............Not one word of apology came from her. She didn't try to come over to smooth things out and let us know that the kitchen is working on it now. She should be saying, "it shoudn't be too long and it will be out for you shortly". Instead, she just ignored us afterwards. There were no positive skillful customer interaction efforts made by the waitress. Nor did she went to the kitchen to tell them to make my dish a priority. Everyone's order was coming out but ours. There was really no excuse for our order to be delayed that long, as I mentioned you no longer have to wait to be seated down. Hing Lung or Ichi Ramen? Confused? The signage says Ichi Ramen, their credit card receipts say Ichi Ramen but you know you're eating Hong Kong cafe-style food from Hing Lung and not Japanese ramen. Hing Lung moved years ago from SF Chinatown to this San Bruno, near Tanforan Shopping Center, location. At least the menu says Hing Lung! Hong Kong style cafe serving Jook, Clay Pots, Chow Mein, Chow Fun, Chow Fan, Veggie dishes, Fried Dishes, etc... that all comes out hot. The orders are fired based on the order received, thus if you order something later than your original order, don't expect it to come out at the same time. But like I said, it will come out temperature HOT! Don't expect nice polite servers expecting a conversation with them as to what's good, the weather, etc.. you're lucky if they take your order quickly without needing a wave to them. Look at the menu, look at what others are eating, and just wave and order from them. They do bring you hot tea and refill your glasses without asking. So these waitresses are churning and moving them tables as fast as they can. We ordered: - Seasonal Greens with fermented Tofu - Fried Salty Egg Pumpkin (Kaboucha really) - Signature Chinese Beef Stew with Rice Noodle Roll in a Clay Pot (Lots of tender Beef with some tendon having a slight Chinese mustard taste to it) - Singapore Chow Mein All orders were large, temperature HOT, and tasty with little wait time. The longest time you'll wait is for a table and not for the food. Large shopping center parking lot, handicapped parking right in front which is convenient but hard to get out of as it's on a main feeder into the shopping mall. I love the noodles here! It was my first time, and I'd love to return when I go back to South San Francisco again. Service was good and fast. They had 5 people cooking constantly moving, which made service fast. It's a small restaurant that's pretty clean. The name Hing Lung is actually pronounced as Xing Lung Restaurant, the H is silent. They don't have Chinese hot mustard, though, and I eat all my Chinese cuisine with hot mustard and shoyu. I'll have to bring my own next time read more

I usually went to Hing Lung many years ago in San Francisco Chinatown. So when I found out they have one in San Bruno. My decision was made. I'm going there for dinner. Hing Lung San Bruno is in the Lucky Supermarkets shopping mall. The restaurant is dated. It was a ramen restaurant before Hing Lung took over. The English name on the street sign is still Ichi Ramen. But they have an extensive Chinese name, Hing Lung, at the front of the restaurant too. The shopping center made me a little worried because I saw a few homeless in the mall. But oh well! It is in the San Francisco Bay Area. This is normal! I just eat and leave! The dining room looks spotless even though it is dated. We have very fast services. I ordered the Ground Beef Pan Fried Rice Vermicelli and Spare Rib Black Bean Sauce Chow Fun. It is good! They know what they're doing. So delicious! I'm coming back for sure. The place is small so it's better to come here when it's not rush hour. All the food that we ordered were very tasty. 1 thing, though! I did notice that they automatically added a 15% service fee, which I'm assuming is the tip, when they didn't use to do that in February. Is this something that they just implemented recently? I'm not against tipping. I always tip a minimum of 15%. I just wish they let the customers know. I wonder how many people don't pay attention to the tab and give an extra tip on top of that. Went for Dinner Food - 3/5. Fried rice had the light flavors of scallops with umami from the egg whites. Plenty of scallions gave it a nice aroma with a peppery kick. However, it was on the heavy side with a little too much oil, especially for dried scallops fried rice, making the flavor get tiring quickly. Honey BBQ pork was tender with a nice red color. Flavor was rich, but the greasiness of the pork caught up to your palate rather quickly. I wasn't a fan of the honey as while the sweet flavor was different, it did not have synergy with the heavy pork. Service - 4/5. Quick and efficient service. Food came out in good speed and service was readily available. Value - 4/5. Food quality was a mixed bag. Flavors weren't bad but just below the mark, making you think about a return visit. On the plus side, the portions are very generous with affordable pricing. The giant plate of pork was $15 and the mountain pile of fried rice was $17. Hot tea was complimentary. I liked the wonton meen but I personally like it more from Gum Kuo in Oakland Chinatown. The noodles are better there and the soup is more flavorful there. The chicken porridge was really good as well! However, I just don't like having to use my hands while I eat. The pieces of chicken inside the porridge have bones and I prefer a boneless chicken porridge. The menu is huge so I'll definitely be trying out more items! Out of curiosity to see which is closer to my childhood flavors, I tried the Hing Lung Cafe on Grand Ave in SSF. I ordered my usual for take-out: pork offal jook, sampan jook, and Singapore rice noodle - and.... I ended up tossing a lot of the food in the trash. I don't care who was the real owner of the original Hing Lung. I only care about the food, and I ended up ordering the same things from this Hing Lung in San Bruno in order to wipe out the not-nearly-as-tasty food from the SSF one. This place is one of my go-to Hong Kong Cafe that still delivers authentic hk dishes. I usually come here for their breakfast/lunch items. I ordered the Hing Lung treasures which are the egg puffs and fried doughs. They came cold and hard which was expected since they were pre-made and not stored in an oven. I took them home and heated it back up with an airfryer to wake those souls up. Then they were so much better than before. The eggpuff was pretty eggy with almost like custard sponge cake texture inside. The assorted organs congee is another classic that's often disappointing at other restaurants due to the freshness of the ingredients and how overcooked they are but not for Hing Lung. The organs were prepped properly so it didn't stink or taste funky which is the mainly reason I don't usually get it at other places. They were cooked just enough to be tender and not leave that rough feeling in the mouth. The congee was flavorful and thick. I believe they used chicken stock as the base. The pan fried noodles with honey beef is another popular Hong Kong dish. The portion of the noodle was a bit less so there was too much sauce making the noodle soggy. It was still crispy for the most part and they used the right type of egg noodle. The bell peppers were crunchy and fresh. The beef was very tender and juicy along with the sauce. Although the sauce was a bit too sweet from the honey but it was the authentic hong kong style black pepper sauce where they added Worcestershire sauce for that distinct taste. I came here around 11 and there was still a few tables left but around 11:20 people had to wait for one. Plenty of parking outside and the service is good for a Chinese restaurant. This place is the minimum standard of what a basic Hong Kong Cafe is like in HK but it's hard to find another place that offers more in the bay area. We came here a few nights ago for a last minute dinner since we didn't feel like cooking. We sat down and ordered the beef chow fun, black bean sauce and sweet and sour pork. We were initially seated facing the door but the server mentioned that it's probably a colder area so she moved us to a different spot. The black bean sauce clams were probably my favorite of the night. We've been here many times but haven't ordered the clams till now & noticed that most people always order this dish too. The beef chow fun was delicious and came out nice and hot. We especially liked that it wasn't just a ton bean sprouts but a good proportion of beef, onions and green onions too. The sweet and sour pork was nice and meaty but was a little more on the sour side this time. Overall we were really happy with our meal. Big portions of each dish so you get the bang for your buck. Some other dishes that we enjoy from here are the porridges, the salted fish and chicken fried rice & the garlic sautéed pea sprouts. I love this place. I've eaten at many places in the Bay Area, and for the price and quality of food I don't think there's many comparable options. They certainly have a very strong consistency in their cooking and the food is not only presentable but also penetrating with flavor. Now, this type of HK cafe or cantonese style food is very greasy so it might not be for everyone, and the dishes that I tend to order have a lot of fat in them so if you are seeking more healthy options I would either order their jook or look elsewhere. 5/5 stars for the combination of quality and quantity of food, affordable prices, and speed 3/5 for service and ambiance, (I could care less as all the food came out in time) you do have to flag waitresses as they're super super busy. Almost dish we ordered was good, but we haven't tried their whole menu, the only negative was the Chinese doughnut, it was pretty bland and dry but prob goes with jook. When kids, Hing Lung was our go to jook place in Chinatown. Surprised to find them now at the plaza close to my work. The storefront says Ichi Ramen, but their menu notes Hing Lung. Wall photos inside are of the Chinatown restaurant from yesteryears. Jook is most like comfort food for me. Their preserved egg and pork jook was, and still is, my fave dish from Hing Lung. For me, it's flavorful and I didn't need to add anything else to it. We also ordered the fries donuts. Always good when dipped in the jook. Still, not too spicy for me, so I was able to eat this without drinking a lot of water. My relative, who is not a big fan of seafood, ate a few bowls but decided to eat the fried rice instead because near the end, there were more seafood settled at the bottom of the bowl. The seafood contained shrimp, squid, and a white meat fish. There is a pickled vegetable in the soup and that created a different layer of sourness. I basically grew up with Hing Lung food. They used to have a location in SF Chinatown that I frequent weekly. I love everything on their menu, it reminds me of real HK food and all the times I ate there with my family when I was younger. Here are my favorites: Beef chow fun: silky, flavorful flat noodles with beef, bean sprouts, and green onions. What is there not to love. My grandmas favorite! Thousand years preserved eggs, pork porridge: i love dipping the Chinese donut into their porridge. So damn good and so comforting. Minced beef over rice: wet, saucy, flavorful minced beef with a raw egg over rice. I can eat this everyday. Pan fried noodles: meat, seafood and veggies with lots of gravy over a bed of crispy noodles. One of my kids absolute favorite. Chinese donut wrapped with rice noodles: not many restaurants have this dish so I get it every time I eat here. XO sauce rice noodles: such a simple dish but I love it. We were able to grab a seat immediately (lucky day before Lunar New Year Day) at a very small table upfront. Clams were saucy and droopy good, vegetables were very soft/fully cooked for easy biting and swallowing, and the West Lake beef tofu soup was honestly tasty and amazing. I don't remember any other place that make it this great. Good food presentation. Their large pea sprouts with garlic sauce was excellent. They even had the Fried Chinese doughnut that we wanted. Everything was served in giant portions at the average $16-$25 per order price range. Food pieces were huge! That's plenty of leftovers for two people. Great feeling. Good vibes. Master Chef was looking out the kitchen door a few times. Hardworking group of people in the hot kitchen. Staffs were very attentive and aggressive servers. Was kind of confusing standing in front of this business with "Ichi Ramen" sign hanging above the entrance, but with Hing Lung in chinese characters written on the front window next to the curb side. This business was recommended by our friend. A rather tiny place that was packed and there was a line out the entrance with people waiting to get in. Finally we were seated. The serving staff was very busy, but with very friendly manner and performed efficiently. Though the place was full, food arrived in a timely manner. The Sampan congee, packed with ingredients came first, then the braised beef brisket and tendon, portion was very generous, nicely prepared and tasted super tender and delicious. Stir fry beef with bitter melon also cooked beautifully. The house special chow-mien came in good portion with squid, shrimp, fish filet and char-su pork, noodes nicely fried with a tasty gravy, very inviting. Every individual on the table had their full share but still there was left overs for the four of us to take home for dinner. Outside, the sign says "Ichi Ramen," even though this restaurant is Hing Lung. I believe that was the name of the old restaurant. However, that was years ago, and they haven't removed that sign. It's also confusing because even the receipt says "Ichi Ramen". However, it's definitely Hing Lung. It's confusing/disorganized/not well established/etc. Not a big deal because I'm pretty sure the name "Hing Lung" itself already has a pretty well-established reputation. The food is pretty good and the price isn't bad either. I'm a local, so I come here every now and then. It's pretty convenient, lots of parking. The place tends to be pretty packed. With that said, if it's your first time, you can't come in with high expectations. The service is never great. I just want to preface by saying that I am Chinese American, and I am familiar with these small Chinese restaurants and how they operate. So, when I say that I did not enjoy the treatment and service, it should speak volumes. The restaurant itself isn't big. Always seems like they're short-staffed because they only have several waitresses who are always running around and shouting across the room. I don't love that, but it would not even be a problem if it weren't so difficult to get their attention. But yeah, very minimal service, which is fine if you just go for the food. Additionally, the restaurant is not that clean. It's not a health hazard, just not entirely visually appealing, and I had to swat away flies every once in a while. I guess they updated their menus and aren't familiar with it, because I tried to order using the item numbers on the menu, and the waitress told me to not give her the number, that it would take her too long to figure out... I didn't like her attitude. And like, if that's the case... then the restaurant either needs to train their employees to be familiar with the item numbers or establish a better system. If you can't deal with the item numbers, then why have them on there in the first place? How dare you tell me how I should order? Respectfully, it's your job to know your menu. Or at least ask me nicely. This really irked me. Own up to your shortcomings instead of making excuses. "Don't tell me the number, it'll take me too long" is an immature way to say "I'm not familiar with the item numbers. Could you tell me the name instead?" read more
