I did not realize that a favorite Kaimuki Indian restaurant decided to branch out into the Ala Moana area. I discovered this when I went to look for a lunch option one day in June 2022.
I'll I felt like Indian food fix one Saturday afternoon, so I decided to check Yelp and see what was around Ala Moana shopping center. I was surprised that Himalayan Indian cuisine was here at the shopping Center at eight is the second, maybe third location on the island of Oahu. The other one is in Kailua. Or so I've heard. With that said, I decided to order up some curry and garlic non-bread, along with some vegetable Samosa for my meal. It was easy to pick my meal because that's what my favorites are when I get Indian food. I usually love the curries anyway. I do enjoy the rice that is served with Indian cuisine, so much different than the usual rice used in local plate lunch places. With that said, it was a good thing that Himalayan Kitchen branched out to the Ala Moana center location. It helps to have some spice and variety to the area in general terms. For the most part though, it was a good place and a wonderful addition to the Ala Moana center family of merchants and businesses. The only problem would be the lack of dining space. They have a few tables outside the restaurant, but that's about it. I feel like they're basically a small take out restaurant that needs bigger space to hold seating capacity for its customers. It is what it is though. On one of my visits to this location, I was glad that it was located basically directly underneath the Lanai food court on the first floor. I usually in that area of the mall, so a quick trip downstairs to order me some Indian food is basically a slice of heaven.
The overall experience here at the Himalayan Kitchen - Ala Moana shopping center was good and decent. As with all walk in orders, they give you about 20-30 minutes, before you can pick up your order. Best bet would be to call it in versus me walking in and waiting around. During my initial visit here, I basically got the usual flavor that made me crave Indian food in the first place, as mentioned above. The samoas were amazing, as usual and the curry was awesome too. The experience here at this Himalayan kitchen location was good, casual, and almost perfect. The ambiance does feel like a take out place, to be honest, but it's ala Moana. Only a handful of places have enough space in the mall to cater to a larger dining space. The prices here are usually on point with the others on Oahu. Indian food is basically in my top 3 of most expensive. The other two is Japanese and fine dining places. The lady at the counter was nice, while attending to other orders. Himalayan kitchen - Ala Moana felt like a small oasis of Indian goodness, especially when most Indian restaurants on Oahu is basically in town, versus other places. The food here is always good. I recommend getting the samosas of course. The other entrees is up to you. The curries are always smooth and I've yet to try their biryanis yet. The naans are great and is usually on my go to list for Indian food du jour. whatever you are craving that day or night, consider coming to the Ala Moana location for a good helping of soulful Indian food while you shop at the shopping center. It's decadent and can totally be your daily fix if you need it. Come on down. Definitely recommended it! I'm now craving it as I write this review.
This Himalayan Kitchen location is located in the Ala Moana shopping center, on the 1st floor / street level, directly underneath the Macy's wing. They accept major credit cards, which is a good thing, as well as cash. As far as parking goes, best bet would be to park near macy's, so it can be a benefit to get you close as possible. I hear they're gonna implement paid parking at Ala Moana shopping center soon, so be aware of that. If you are like me, consider taking the bus. Most routes start and end at the Ala Moana shopping center. Pick the route(s) that's appropriate for your needs. It'll be definitely the best thing ever if you come here and savor the art of Indian food. It's just that good with the intricate spice level that only Indian cuisine can provide. While the restaurant is in a major shopping Mecca, you won't go wrong. It's another place where you can find Indian fare without having to travel too much. Best bet is to come here on an empty stomach with a few friends. They'll gonna love you for it.
4.5 stars for the overall experience. 5.0 stars for the food. 4.0 stars for the service but 3.0 stars for the prices.
