I came to Hillyard Automotive twice for work on my Mazda Miata, the first time after completing significant suspension work on my to get an alignment and the second to recharge my AC which was blowing warm. My initial experience was great, when I took it in for the alignment they noticed that a several nuts/bolts were not torques down sufficiently and recommended what they called a "nut and bolt" where they would go through and take a wrench to everything in the suspension to make sure it was all up to spec. I was happy to go through with this as having a professional double check my work would certainly help me sleep a little sounder at night. The wording of this service made it clear that they would "Nut and bolt all suspension/steering hardware on a Modified/lowered/lifted vehicle." I took this to mean that, as the invoice said, they would make sure that everything in the suspension, especially anything obviously modified, was torqued down. A bit later, after not driving the car for about a month due to being out of town I schedule an AC recharge with them, on my way to the shop a clunk developed from the front suspension, I bring this up to the guys and they tell me they will take a look at it. It turned out that the top shock mount nuts, the ones keeping the entire assembly from falling a part were missing, presumably somewhere between my house and the shop. Being a key component of the suspension I had assumed this would have been covered in the nut and bolt I paid them 264 dollars for previously, but when I brought this up they were insistent that they had made it clear they only did work under the car, and the shock mount being inside the engine bay was not included in that. I was unsatisfied by this answer, and annoyed that I was being charged 174 dollars for something I was pretty confident I had paid for them to do already, but accepted it as my experience with them up until that point had been very good. It wasn't until I got home from the shop and checked the rear shocks to make sure those weren't backing off too that I realized that they had in fact tightened things that weren't under the car, including the same top mounts of the shocks in the rear. In addition to this I also found that they had snapped multiple studs in a brace that covered the top of the front shocks, which they had not told me about. I then called the shop and relayed this information, to which they insisted that their work on the rear shocks was them going "above and beyond" what was expected of them. It wasn't until I read them the wording of the invoice which was explicit in applying to ALL suspension hardware that they dropped this and were willing to provide me a refund for the 174 dollars they charged me to complete a job I had already paid for and replace the hardware that had fallen off as a result. I was very disappointed with how the situation was handled and their refusal to make their mistake right and admit wrongdoing tarnished what could have been a great experience. Had they just apologized for missing that when I was in the first time and fixed it I wouldn't have thought twice about it. Instead they insisted that their partially completed job was an example of them going above and beyond, and told me that "most shops wouldn't welcome me back after this." Which is an absolutely absurd stance to take after THEY are the ones who forgot to complete something. Their prices are decent, and when they do a job correctly it's done very well, but if something goes wrong they are extremely unwilling to apologize or take even the smallest amount of responsibility. Had they just apologized and fixed it I wouldn't have any reservations about returning or recommending the shop to others but the way they handled this situation was so poor that I will no longer do either of these things. read more

Came here to get new wheels mounted on my 4Runner. The crew did an excellent job and ensured that my new wheels did not get scratched during the mounting process. They even packaged up my old wheels in the cardboard boxes that came with my new wheels and bagged up the lugnut sets. Very professional staff that is friendly as well. Replaced valve cover gaskets on my vintage vet and didn't get 50 miles before they were leaking on the manifolds. Charged me 600 to install. Took the vet to a local shop that replaced and fixed their crappy job from Hillyard with caulk gaskets charged me one hour for 60$ and never had anymore leaks. I would absolutely not recommend this company for repairs. If the owner would like to issue a refund i'd be happy to accept that as an apology. Or return my phone calls. read more

It was almost closing time and the other car shops said I had to come in the next day but Hillyard got me in, fixed the tire and got me out with in 10mins. Hillyard Automotive is my go to for anything related to my BMW. I took it in for a strange knocking noise. The owner and I took it out on a drive and of course the sound wasn't there. He told me that whatever the problem was, it wasn't so bad that they needed to do a bunch of work/inspections, but that I should bring it back if the knock got louder or I hear it more often. I've never had that kind of honest feedback from a repair shop. I'm 100% confident that they would never try to change for something that wasn't needed. I found Hillyard Automovie which was the nearest shop, so I called and asked if they can take my car right away without appointment. Mike said okay to bring it. The phone call ended with, "I don't think that you know your vehicle that well and your expectations are too high". This was said to me verbatim! Why I was spoken to disrespectfully and insulted is unclear! I own and drive a 2021 Chevy Express work van with almost 50K miles purchased new, drive daily and the only driver.... ever! Time for new tires! I chose to do business with Hillyard Automotive since they sponsor my kids' high school, have excellent reviews, and they are a local small business as I am. The service was supposed to be routine and common, tire changing, balance, alignment. Scheduled the appointment a month ahead, came in on time, waited for the service, paid in full, left. Driving the vehicle, I noticed that the steering wheel is off, slightly to the right and pulls to the right, also feel a vibration at different speeds. Called back, made another appointment about a week later. Not a huge deal... lets just get it right! Arrived for my 2nd appointment, the van got re-aligned, tires were re-balanced but this time with stick on weights. These wheels are made for hammer on style weights. Again, I leave, and the alignment is much better but now the vibration is at a different speed than before. The only change was the balance. The orientation of the wheels was NOT put back where they came from and now, I have a tire light on that cannot be resolved without a scan tool or physically rearranging the tires or driving back to the other side of town for a 3rd time. When mentioned this to Mike, I got no response. Call back, share the exciting news with Mike and this is the excellent customer service I received. Not getting it right the first time is a human error and happens all the time, but to be disrespected is not okay. Why this became personal is my opinion that someone's feeling got hurt. We have a new driver in our household that just got a car, and another one getting a vehicle next year. You never know what one job can turn into. We will have 5 vehicles in our immediate family this time next year, you could have easily had ALL of them. read more

I made an alignment appt. They did not disclose that they have to test drive it before the alignment. I have NEVER HEARD OF test driving before the alignment. I would have been ok with it and would have preferred to go with. I hear my car being sped off and away...fast. I walk out the dude Quinton took it down the road and pulled back in pretty hot. Only I get to drive my car this way! This is not a professional test drive at all. If he were simply test driving to get a feel of the way the car is handling the SPEED was not necessary! I don't tend to write reviews, but after my experience with Hillyard, I felt compelled to. Easily the best experience I have had with a mechanic shop. My car drives better than it has since it was brand new and significantly better than after any other service or repair I have had done. The process was very transparent. They found an issue that could have cost a lot of money to repair, but took the time to do a proper diagnosis and found the real issue negating the need for an expensive and unnecessary repair. They were very transparent with the entire process and I never felt like they were trying to upsell or do anything shady. It was refreshing to deal with such an awesome business. If you need an alignment done for your vehicle, please come here! They are great. Hillyard Automotive is a brand new shop that has only been open for a few months. That means everything in the shop is super clean and everything is brand new. The waiting area is clean and they provide free snacks and drinks as you wait. They also have free Wi-Fi if you need to work while waiting for you vehicle like I had to. They also have a TV for you to just watch shows while you wait. I am always a little hesitant when I get an alignment on my car because its AWD and alignment shops are usually terrible with AWD vehicles. I was able to get my 4-wheel alignment done in about 1.5 hours and it helps that the gentleman that does the alignments is a perfectionist so if anything seems off, including the steering wheel, he will bring it back in and re-align everything until it is perfect. I wanted to wait a week or 2 to verify the alignment was correct and it is! I plan on bring more of my cars here in the future to get work done as they can do everything and the staff seems very knowledgeable. I am a car guy and it seems like they know their stuff as well.
