Carlos and his team are the most helpful, understanding and communicative I have ever dealt with, especially when it comes to auto repair. I had originally found them when my VW Passat TDI needed some major work, not only were they less than 1/2 the price of the dealership...they were the most responsive and helpful when explaining what was wrong and what needed to be done. No 'extra' things were added and even used top notch parts for the repair. Second time I used them had to have my car repaired, was quick to get it looked at, diagnosed and repaired for a diesel issue. After contacting a couple of other business we found a place that was would do the alignment for less than Foreign Auto services. While it was in the machine, we waited to see if they would tell us about any extra fees. Well lo and behold, NO EXTRA CHARGES, NO "OLD BOLTS", NO ATTITUDE IN CUSTOMER SERVICE. The service provided was decent enough, albeit slow, and my vehicle did develop a leak from the oil drain plug gasket after my previous oil change here. My biggest issue is with their hostility toward Groupon customers. I was told today by their service writer Emad not to come back because I've used their oil change Groupons 3 times (all in accordance with the fine print) but have declined their additional recommended services each time. I'm on a schedule and can't just drop everything and stay 3-4 extra hours to have these services done; additionally, I prefer to get a second opinion and price on such issues before proceeding. Apparently that makes me unwelcome, which is fine. If your intent is for your Groupon to be a single-use introductory offer, make that the policy on Groupon. Don't sell multiple Groupons to me then browbeat me for using them without accepting your upsells. But don't worry, after Emad's rudeness I won't be coming back for an oil change or anything else. read more

I've booked a Groupon for alignment service with Foreign Auto Services. After I called to schedule an appointment, first thing, they ask you about make and model of the car, but in fact, no matter what car you named, they sayin immediately, your car requires additional $35 charge (which is not mentioned anywhere ! ) I said ok, and was asked about my phone number. After giving the number, they refused to schedule an appointment, saying, "We have a note in our system, you've been here before and used only Groupon, and refused any additional services. BEWARE. THIS Buisness is SCAM. They diagnosed incorrectly and gave me a inspection report of several things were wrong and tried to use scare tactics. 1. They said my Oil was bad. I have been here twice now, the first time was when I got a 4-wheel alignment done and the 2nd time is when I had to get the license plate running light bulb replaced, I came back since the first time I visited I didn't have a problem and they offered me this $25 gift card that you can use every season. I was told by the lady at the front desk that I could use it for ANY service and upon reading the fine print on the back, it says "Purchase must be greater or equal to the monetary value of this gift card". When it was time for me to pay the $35 since they replaced the bulb, she informed me that I could only use the gift card for services over $150! SHE LIED TO ME AND MADE IT UP. NOWHERE ON THE CARD SAYS THAT. In that case, it's false advertising. Now I understand the bad reviews they get, they aren't honest and won't honor their own promotions. They lost a customer for $25.. I was looking for an independent garage in my local area to service my E46 BMW 325Ci. I read through the Yelp reviews of several shops that looked like they have experience working on German cars and came across FAS. I then looked through their website and started a live chat with Carlos. It was great being able to chat with someone and he was extremely helpful in answering all my questions. I then worked with Eric in checking in, going through my list of service items, and then with all the follow-up after they had my car. He was very helpful, as well. I knew I needed quite a bit of work done on my car already, but the tech did a thorough overview of everything and was able to list out everything that I should have done immediately and those that I can wait on. After picking up my car and driving it for a week or so, everything feels great with it. I couldn't be happier. They do quality work and the pricing seems fair. My Car AC was cooling but not like when it was new so I wanted to give it a boost, I saw this on Groupon so I went there, They used my Groupon $122, then charged me $127.00 to replace a defective part which according to them would fix my AC, then they gave me back the car with a Broken AC which now does not cool at all, and said the problem was the compressor, very sketchy I feel that they lied about the parts so that I paid them more and ruined my AC, and now they want $994.72 more to fix it on top of the the $249.0 that they made waste, of course they won't give me back my money and now my AC is worse. read more

Full disclosure I know Luis Infante from cycling with him but that does not impact or affect my review. I have a 2004 Toyota Prius that I've only changed the oil (with oil filters) on and replaced an air filter before. Nothing else was done on the car and it has about 135,000 miles. It was not riding well and the check engine light kept on going on. Another friend told me it was b/c of the air intake sensor. So on a Sunday I'm looking at Foreign Auto Services (FAS) web site to see if they service Toyotas. I don't see it there but then a chat window pops up. I assumed it was a bot but soon I can tell it was human and he assured me they work on Toyotas. So I bring it in and they find a ton of things wrong but send a full pdf document with pictures and explaining everything. From the pictures it was clear my car needed a ton of work, front struts and shocks, rear brakes are shot, fuel mixture sensor (lean fuel mixture warning), oil change (which I knew), inspection, front and rear lights for license plates, and a few others. So I told them to fix everything. The suspension and air filter could have lasted longer did not need "immediate attention" but I opted to have everything done. In summary the car rides like it brand new. The also did a wheel alignment. Before bringing it in it was stuttering on acceleration from a stop but now it is perfect. It takes turns 10x better now. Its been a few weeks and I wanted to make sure the check engine light did not come back on. So I am more than happy. My wife was ticked that I would invest so much in such an old car by getting "everything done" but to me it was way worth it. I was thinking about getting rid of the car before this b/c I hated the way it drove. But now I'm keeping it for sure. Also the next day (since they had to keep it over night b/c it needed so much work, they came to my house and picked me up and brought me to their shop. No consumer ever wants to feel "taken", or worse yet, be "taken" but man did Jim get me good at Foreign Auto! The problem is that to him it's business as usual. The story: 2002 VW TDI I use as an airport car in Dulles, Virginia. I drop it off to have the ac serviced/diagnosed and an oil change prior to a Thursday evening flight to Germany returning Saturday after their close of business. Plan is to have my spouse call Saturday AM to get an update and make payment so I can retrieve after hours. In this Saturday AM call JIM advises my wife the brakes are worn beyond limits and car is "dangerous" to drive. Also tells her rear wheel calipers are shot and car will not be ready due to caliper part availability. Wife verbally authorizes $1400.00 repair quote (mistake she readily acknowledges but genuinely concerned for my safety). The problem: what my wife does not know and Jim fails to research is that just 5200 miles ago Foreign Auto Service (YES, the same exact facility) replaced the rear brakes ($600) and also sent photos of the front brakes advising they were fine. When I returned and phoned Jim on the following Monday he sounded the exact same way your child does when their hand is in the cookie jar. Told me he wouldn't charge for the rear brake components and the adjusted invoice was now $1300.00. When I went to pick up the car and question the adjusted invoice Jim now stated the $1400.00 quote didn't include the $360 in rear calipers. When I explained it had to because that was the reason you told her the car wouldn't be ready he struggled to tell me he's been in this business for 30 years and doesn't appreciate what I'm saying. He had nothing else to share (including any worn parts) so I paid the $1300 and left and drove away in my UNairconditioned Jetta. The brakes felt exactly the same as when I brought the car in! The moral: people who have too much money should take their car to Foreign Auto Service but if you're rich don't work with Jim cause he'll take your money and your sense of decency in people from you! RESPONSE TO OWNER: The Internet is a powerful tool and Yelp is a positive tool that can inform and protect consumers. I take the responsibility very seriously as anyone can see by my reviews. After 12 years as the owner of a successful aircraft operations/maintenance business, I understand the difference between a dissatisfied customer and a rip off and I'm certain you do too. You had my number and I informed Jim specifically I'd be posting a review/warning to others. He knew when I said that that there was nothing he could do (including no charge at all) that would preclude me from posting something and you didn't call because you also knew I would not take this review down as there is actually quite a bit more (the serpentine belt had just been replaced 122 miles previously at a firestone facility with no note of brake issues...oops!) that I did not include. I'm a very fortunate consumer because I can absorb the financial loss. I came to your shop with air conditioning that worked but only had a 15 degree drop. $1300 later I left with no air. The pink painted brakes, rotors and struts in your waiting room speak volumes on the consumer you are targeting and they need to be informed. If you're pricing is high I, as a consumer, can compare shop. But you and I both know that's not the situation here. I stand by my complete narrative and you can cling to your response. read more

I am VERY happy with the quality of the service received. My daughters Honda needed to be serviced and I was reluctant to return to the dealer for yet another astronomical bill. Whereas Foreign Auto Service is not particularly inexpensive (especially not for a Honda), I was really comfortable and trusted them given I used to be a customer in the early 2000's and they'd always done solid work on my VW. Frankly, I forgot about them until recently when I was in the market for a new technician. I really appreciate and value the detailed report with pictures, and their flexibility/advisement on how to prioritize some of the service items. Additionally, during the vehicle check, they noticed an error made by the Honda dealer in servicing my vehicle AND that my inspection sticker was quite overdue. I'm really bummed that the other service center made errors because it was costly to have the issue remediated (& cleaned) -- of course this was no fault of Foreign Auto Service. I'm grateful for the thoroughness of their inspections. Finally I want to thank Jim for his patience and creative pricing options. He also accommodated my request to physically show us the work completed. While outside, Jim took special care & interest to offer tips and educate my 21 year old daughter on the car maintenance. This was my first time using Foreign Auto Services even though I've known about them and heard good things for a long time. My 2005 Jeep Liberty's speedometer stopped working, along with everything else that uses mileage (odometer, cruise control) and I'd already been to one shop that couldn't fix it. I also had a list of other things to fix or that I though might need fixing (power mirrors, brakes, tailgate window hydraulic lifters, etc). Overall, it was an excellent experience! I found them to be professional, extremely helpful, willing to take the time to explain things to me, honest, and fair. It took them quite a while to track down the speedometer issues, some of it was wiring! But even with all the diagnostic time, the cost to fix was quite reasonable, and it fixed my seatbelt off ringer too! (I guess it had stopped ringing and I didn't notice that.) They checked my brakes, said they were fine and DIDN'T NEED ANYTHING right now. What?!? You ever heard of THAT?!! :-) I'm always afraid repair shops will fix things that aren't necessary, taking advantage of me, especially as a woman. Extra brownie points for this! They installed a new mirror control switch, and new lifters on the tailgate window. Note that I had the lifters replaced by a Jeep dealer about 3 years ago and after about 1 1/2 years, they stopped working already. Plus, they never felt as strong as they feel now! Anyway, I think that is all they did (Oh! They did the state inspection too!) and the total cost didn't break the bank like I was afraid it might - got out of there for a little over eleven hundred, I think. Quite nice. Doing my happy dance! They said when I come back for an oil change, they will check out the entire vehicle and let me know if there is anything else that needs attention now or coming down the pike. I am so pleased with my experience, they now have a loyal customer who will drive all the way out to Chantilly from Alexandria because they are the Best!! read more

Wouldn't you know it, FAS comes through again! Tires on my Expedition were looking pretty bad. FAS got me some new ones at a great price. They mounted/balanced and did an alignment. I also had one of their "Best" services done, all in less than a day! As always, they did a quick inspection of the car. They found the belt was a little worse for wear and my A/C system was getting low. The next week I took my Truck to Michigan with a 14 foot trailer, 5 dirtbikes and a car full of kids, motocross gear and luggage. The truck performed flawlessly. The good...the customer service was incredible, and everyone was friendly as well as professional. I had taken my car in for an oil change and tire rotation (all parts and labor reasonably priced). They insisted on doing a free inspection since I was a new customer, and they emailed me a detailed report (with pictures) of what they found, which I absolutely loved. They seem honest, and I would absolutely trust them to perform any repairs on my car. The bad...they found that I needed new brake pads and rotors, even said they could get the parts in and complete it that afternoon (which was great), however the cost was about double what it should be (they quoted somewhere between $460 and $490). They have a high labor rate (it was either $110 or higher per hour), and the upcharge on parts was a bit high. They almost couldn't beat the dealer's price (which should say something). However, I do understand that there are certain costs with running your own business and employing quality people. I also realize that their pricing is probably competitive with the area. In my case, I have a professional mechanic with his own shop (in my home town a little over two hours away) who has always done work on my family's cars and he gave me a more realistic quote (again, around half the price ($250 at most with parts and labor)). Overall, I will always return to them for oil changes and simple maintenance tasks. I will also always get a quote from them for major repairs (not covered by the dealer), but I will be sure to shop around and verify part cost, and get an estimate from another mechanic (mentioned above). I certainly did not get the impression they were trying to screw me out of money, I am sure they need to charge the way they do to stay open in this area.
