I came over to Hilltop while a family member was in surgery. It's a great quiet place to wait and enjoy a meal. Pretty standard diner food. Quick and spot on customer service. I got the lemon ginger tea and Reuben. The Reuben came with chicken noodle soup and fries. The soup was pretty bland. However, the Reuben was great and came out with the hot fries. Definitely can see why it's a fan favorite.

Newish chairs, but the booths are a mess. Never very crowded these days.

Haven't been here in ages, but I stopped in for a quick lunch today. Note that the hours posted on the outside of the building are not the same as their current hours. They seemed close at 3:00 p.m. most days. Food is just as it ever was, environment is pretty standard for a small, local family restaurant. The seats in some of the booths are cracked. The menu is a little smaller than it used to be, but it still got the standard pancakes and sandwiches.

This is what it looks like.

A very good traditional to Chicago restaurant. Even the menu is like they were when I was young (50 years ago.) It is right across the street from Swedish Covenent Hospital. I had a burger. It was a good half pound as advertised. It was also good. I liked the old traditional breakfast menu and when I go back for my procedure I will try the breakfast items. The waitress was quick and efficient. She also very friendly and pleasant. I missed these corner places and am glad to find one still around . My only complaint was that their deserts were cakes. I felt like pie and ice cream but they stopped carrying pie. Oh well I guess nobody is perfect.

On the northwest corner of Foster and California in Chicago.

Great little restaurant. I just stopped for breakfast after church on a Sunday. Eggs Benedict as good as anyplace. No long wait to be seated. Not obvious from the front: park in the church lot, Sunday-Friday for free. The only downside: it's only open until 3:00 PM; I'm sure it would be a great place for dinner.

Bill under $20. Breakfast special comes with coffee or juice.

Solid. Omelets are huge and light, plus they make good Greek diner spaghetti.

We arrived on a weekend morning, and the line was out the door. It went by relatively fast. The turnaround is good, considering the restaurant is pretty big, with seats for all party sizes inside plus some tables outside. Service was just fine. As a diner, it was pretty average, but our general needs were met. Our food came out in a decent amount of time as well. My friend and I shared the Denver Omelet and One Pancake. We also got other items to share, like the Pecan Roll. The omelet truly is jumbo! It comes in a giant skillet with potatoes. It was full of all the fixings and needed a bit of seasoning, but overall it was good. The pecan roll was sweet and so gooey! The pancake tasted average. The thing here is the portion sizes. Considering we shared and still had leftovers, that's a sign in itself. Everyone else enjoyed their dishes and left stuffed. If you're visiting Chicago and want a true breakfast diner experience, Lou Mitchell's is a must-try. Find them off W Jackson Blvd., near public transportation.

Because no way did we eat at the same place. WOW! It's only been a handful of times that I've had the urge to write a review while I'm still eating because of how amazing the experience is. The ambiance is bustling and will FOR SURE keep you awake as you fill your belly. And the burger? It's not just a burger, it's culinary art and a full on flavor experience. I was full well before my plate was empty, but I simply could not imagine reheating any part of it later. The egg was cooked to sunny-side perfection, and every bite was ridiculous. It's bar-style, so the fries came out first, hot and paired with a garlic aioli that absolutely did what it needed to do. Everyone moves with purpose. The food, the service, the atmosphere--this place is a well-oiled machine of greatness. 1000/10. Will absolutely be back.

Not a huge inside seating area, but it is nice to sit outside on a nice day. We got the single cheeseburger with egg, the double cheeseburger with egg, the fried bologna sandwich with egg, crispy fries and the crispy potato hash! The single is a double patty and the double is a triple. The burgers were deliciously cooked and very hearty! Root beer compliments the burgers well! The crispy fries with the garlic aioli and mornay sauce were very yummy! The crispy potato hash was probably the lowlight of this meal... love the crispy-ness of the hash, didn't love the gravy. Service overall was okay, they were busy so it got slow once our food arrived. It does get loud inside so be prepared. Au Cheval lives up to the hype! We will totally go back for the burgers, crispy fries and root beer!
