Decided to drive down to Newport for the day, wound up browsing the shops at Fashion Island, and…read morethen wound up having lunch at Great Maple, one of the better, sit-down restaurants at the center. It's a bright and airy venue, with thick, clubby stools at the bar and a dual, indoor/outdoor dining area that's just right for the coastal California locale. We arrived near the end of the lunch rush, so we were quickly seated by the friendly Hostess, though there were still plenty of folks eating, and a lively buzz was still thrumming through the room. It was just the right energy for a Saturday lunch. Our server, Darren, was a hoot, with a slight shimmy to his step and personality for days -- sometimes that can be a bit much, but in this case his charisma added a much appreciated charm to the meal. While we didn't imbibe at this sitting, they do have a full bar with a nice selection of cocktails suitable for brunch or dinner, and it's easy to imagine whiling away quite a few hours here at another opportunity. The menu offers a number of clever twists on brunch and lunch mainstays, especially house-made doughnuts and a few Benedicts that push all the buttons of "well, this is something appealingly different." That said, we were just tad boring today as diners, ordering a Burger and the house BLT. We may have made some ordinary-sounding decisions, but Great Maple's versions of these favorites were far from ordinary at all. The burger is made with high quality beef that has just the right amount of fat to make it juicy while retaining the integrity of the flavor of the meat. Cheese, veggies and a fresh brioche bun rounded out the presentation, as did a perfectly achieved pink medium rare. This was a very good, very satisfying burger served with crispy, shoestring fries that really hit the spot. The BLT is built on Levain sourdough that is thick-cut and lightly toasted, and holds up nicely against the moisture in the tomatoes and bright, leafy lettuce. Aioli had a noticeable but mild, and very enjoyable, garlic accent that played really well with everything, walking the line between "spread" and "dressing," and becoming a meaningful component of the sandwich rather than being just an adornment. But the star of the sandwich was the smoky bacon, cut thick enough to retain a pleasing chew while also boasting the kind of char and crisp that make for the most enjoyable bacon on a sandwich. Really, this was a terrific BLT, far above what you normally get, and, as I said before, not anywhere near as ordinary as you may think. So, a very good lunch at Great Maple, and very good reason to plan another visit very soon. Kudos to everyone.

Most of the food was really good, but there were a couple of misses as well. What we ordered: + Fried Chicken and Doughnuts - I was really excited to try their famous maple bacon donuts, but they were surprisingly bad. These donuts were dense, like day-old bread. It has good reviews, so maybe I'm just partial to light, airy donuts. The fried chicken was good though. + Ribeye Hash - hubby ordered this and really enjoyed it. It was huge. + Kids Pancakes with scrambled eggs - we were surprised our little one didn't like the pancakes (which he usually loves), but after we tasted it, we understood why. It had a weird sour after-taste. I've had buttermilk pancakes before, and they never tasted sour. Also, the texture was not fluffy, but kinda flat, and the color was very light. Maybe it wasn't fully cooked (see photo). However, he devoured the scrambled eggs, which he usually doesn't touch. + Chilaquiles - very good. It was a tower. + Modern American Breakfast - pretty good. The vegan avocado toast was average. Overall, this is a nice brunch place with some good options. Other than the donuts and pancakes, the rest of the food was really good.

We arrived on our first dining experience here to find an ambience that is elegant and lively. The bar is the centerpiece and the booths and tables are very comfortable for a long dinner. Our waitress was very friendly and polite. She went out of her way to make us feel welcomed. Now for the food: outstanding Caesar salad to start the meal and the lamb shanks were prepared to perfection. My Jewel had a lemon pasta dish that she loved and will order again. Dessert was a warm rhubarb-strawberry cake served with a divine vanilla ice cream. I quickly realized that we should have tried this place sooner. Truly a spectacular dining adventure. We visited CdM for dinner this past Saturday, and I want to start by recognizing the positives. We…read morereceived a very warm welcome from Andrea, who was courteous, professional, and accommodating when we requested a different table. The staff who assisted with seating and bringing silverware were also friendly and attentive. Unfortunately, our dining experience declined once our order was taken. We ordered the Beets Salad as our starter, followed by the Chicken Piccata and Salmon as our entrées. The salad arrived within about five minutes, but we then waited nearly 40 minutes for our main courses without any acknowledgment or update. When I asked our waitress about the delay, her only response was, "Your order was fired 15 minutes ago." When I asked why it had taken so long, she simply repeated the same statement. At no point did she offer a sincere apology or show any empathy for the extended wait. As someone who has owned and managed businesses, I know that delays can happen. However, a simple apology and proactive communication can make all the difference in how guests perceive the experience. The food itself was excellent, and both entrées were well prepared. Unfortunately, the service continued to disappoint. After we finished our meals, our waitress immediately cleared our plates and brought the check without asking whether we would like dessert, coffee, or anything else to finish our evening. That was surprising and made us feel rushed. I rarely leave negative reviews because I understand that every business can have an off night. In this case, however, the issue was not the kitchen delay--it was the lack of communication, empathy, and basic hospitality. Had our waitress simply apologized, kept us informed, or involved a manager, this review likely would not have been necessary. I hope management views this as constructive feedback. Andrea and several other staff members represented the restaurant exceptionally well, but I believe additional customer service training would help ensure that situations like this are handled with greater professionalism and care in the future.

There's no fishy taste at all, just sweet, fresh crab. The panko breading on the outside is perfectly golden & crispy, & it holds everything together without ever overpowering the crab. Every bite is so rich & flavorful & I honestly could eat these every day. They come w/ coleslaw but I always sub the emerald cashew kale salad on the side & they did it perfectly this time. It's finely chopped kale & cabbage tossed w/ fresh mint & cilantro, then topped w/ toasted cashews & sesame seeds in a sesame miso vinaigrette. I love the crunch from the cashews & how fresh & flavorful it is. It's so good w/ the crab cakes bc it cuts through all the butter. Heavenly Biscuits 9.72/10- these are soo good. They have rosemary in them, are baked from scratch & come out piping hot, which is when they're the best. They're perfectly flaky on the outside & so soft & buttery on the inside. I love them w/ the butter & honey they bring to the table, the honey w/ the rosemary is such a good combo. Definitely one of our favorite apps but sooo filling. Tres Leches 20/10- one of my favorite desserts ever (specifically from here). We always get it w/o the whipped cream & caramel syrup. The cake is so light & fluffy & I love how it's soaked in condensed milk. Even though it's light, the flavor is still so rich & decadent. The fruit is the perfect balance w/ it & I love how it's always served fresh. Even w/o the caramel syrup you still get a little bit of caramel flavor & I don't think it needs anything else. This evening was no different, possibly worse. Our female server was impatient with us when we inquired about the menu, never bothered to check up with us to see if we were satisfied or wanted to add to our order. Part of one of the orders was missing. She was too busy shining wine glasses to check in with us so I had to ask one of her coworkers to check on our order. Eventually , a manager came out with the mystery dish, as we are nearing the end of our meal. I was desperately trying to get her attention to no avail to order another glass of wine. When she finally did grace us with her surely presence, she made no eye contact as she removed an empty water carafe and pushed our bar tab closer to us. Customer Service??? Not only was our server impolite,, she was inattentive and lacked any hint of a personality. When I expressed my dissatisfaction to the server, she sent the manager back over. He politely apologized and offered to comp my glass of wine. I declined. I was there to pay for a wonderful experience that did not happen. He still removed the $18 glass of wine from our bar tab, but the damage was already done. We both lost an hour of our lives, that we will never get back, and had an unpleasant dinning experience. We actually paid to be treated poorly and be ignored by our unpleasant and inattentive server!! How absurd! Disappointing, disrespected and dissatisfied.

Parking was actually a breeze for us in the neighborhood nearby and we walked right down to the place where there were tables and the line wasn't long. Should've gone with the lobster roll but I opted for my usual clam chowder which came out smaller than I thought. When the order came out we also saw they didn't include the seasoned fries I ordered, which is fine because it wasn't on the receipt either. I told my man we don't need to order anymore because we had plenty. Just make sure when ordering you have them read it back not to miss anything. The clam chowder was good, could've had more clam but came out piping hot, which I know is an issue sometimes at places like this. My son got the tuna melt and couldn't finish his potato chips. Wish they had coke on the menu instead of Pepsi, that's my only qualm but other than that next time I'd definitely order the lobster roll.

Made reservations through the open table app. It was on a Friday afternoon with the weather being nice and sunny so thought it would be nice to sit on the patio. Upon checking in with the hostess, was greeted by a very not so friendly hostess. Upon me asking if the patio is available, she said "only inside is available"..... No sorry no smile no nothing...... Excuse me for bringing this up, but if you Miss Hostess does not want to work, nobody forced you to do so...... God!!!! Upon sitting down, the inside temperature was freezing. Felt like just stepped into a fridge or something. Anyways, ordered a hamburger (WELL DONE) and a chopped salad. The chopped salad was delicious! The hamburger was RAW inside. The side of fries had the weirdest taste. The waitress was nice and apologized. I asked for the manager because he needs to know the issue and try to fix it so it doesn't happen again. When the manager came to the table, he started lectureing me that this is not raw and it is just medium well. Ummmm..... First of all Mr. Manager, your opinion does not matter, second of all, I asked for Well Done, regardless of what it is....... GOD!!!! He said if I want a replacement, I said nope, thanks. He took it off the bill and whatever the amount of the dish was, I added as a tip for the waitress. Because it is not her fault that the chef doesn't know how to cook or the manager doesn't have the skills to be a manager. So I am leaving this review for the General manager that you have some serious improvements to make to this restaurant. The bathroom smells horrible. The faucets are broken and disgustingly dirty and your food is not even edible...... I would not be surprised that this place closes down soon. So get to work and take care of your business before it is too late!!!!
