While I really like the big brand kitchen stores, it is so refreshing to stumble across a lovely and adorable indie place like this. This is an okay store, but I was expecting so much more uniqueness. It seemed to me to just be the standard fancy kitchenware that's all around these days. The prices seemed on par with stores like Williams & Sonoma, but there're significantly fewer options because of the small size of the store. (Local-size, so not a bad thing; but I'm not in walking or Metro distance, so compared to other places I can drive to for the same things...) All that said, it's definitely good to have small local options like this, and the location is great. I just wasn't really impressed overall. read more

I just discovered Hill's Kitchen this weekend. After waking up early on Sunday I got a zip car and zipped over. Upon walking in I was surprised i had not been there before. From the brightly hued orange logo to the many kitchen gadgets tempting me, I was in heaven. Walked away with a candle, KY and DC cookie cutter and a micro fiber dishtowel. I can't wait to come back. Just wish it was in my neighborhood. read more

This store is incredible. I have never seen such a terrific selection of cookware, cookbooks, and related items at such reasonable prices. The selection is outstanding, and this is a store I can go to for all of the gifts I'll be giving for Christmas and thereafter. It is incredible that such a great inventory could be offered in a store of "normal" size. And all of the items in stock are great quality and things I would love to have in my own kitchen. I discovered the Hill's Kitchen about two months ago during a walk in Capital Hill area. I went in just to look around but ended up buying a number of items. The person helping me (I needed gift ideas) was so enthusiastic and knowledgeable and helpful. Hill's Kitchen is not in my own neighborhood...I wish it were in walking distance of my home. However I do know that I will be returning there often. read more

I popped into Hill's Kitchen last Sunday. The second I walked into the store I felt like I was transported into a special place. For whatever reason some stores are just kind of therapeutic and this one is one of them. Upon entering the store, my eyes were immediately drawn to the Easter display in the front window. I spent about 10 minutes gazing through all of the adorable Easter napkins, plates, bowls, towels and so forth, just trying to decide what to choose! I finally decided on a set of 4 miniature dish towels for $10. For me, this is a great price. I bought these towels to use as props in my food photography and compared to what I usually pay at Anthropology I thought the price was more than fair. After finding my Easter treat, I headed towards the back of the store. The back of the store (past the counter and beyond) is filled with kitchen tools, cookbooks and everything in between. I ended up buying a non-slip cutting board there that I paid $30 for. This price was a little steep in my opinion, but I was in the mood to treat myself so I figured, why the heck not! When I went to pay for my items, I was created by two energetic employees who complimented me on both my purchases (always a nice touch) and made friendly conversation. All in all, I had a wonderful experience at Hill's Kitchen and can not wait to come back for their cooking classes! read more

Leah has a great shop. She doesn't just carry products, she knows about them. She knows about production and how they do what they do. That shows a lot of care. A lot of people can run a shop and take somebodies word for it, but not here. For a small old hill rowhouse that's been converted she manages to fit a ton of stock in there as well. I have bought little things to All Clad and High end knives. I'll go back again and again! read more

Hill's Kitchen is great, the staff is helpful and knowledgeable without being pushy. I've had to run here to pick up stuff last minute when making new recipes and realizing I didn't have a cooking utensil that was necessary. I've purchased things in a rush and thought "I wish I'd checked to see if I could get this cheaper" and I've later gone back to Amazon or targets websites to check the price and it's been right in range of everyone else. I've gone to a free book signing in the upstairs kitchen which is beautiful, and they served two dishes out of the cookbook. I plan on updating this review after attending the next cooking class tentatively scheduled for June. read more

The play on words in its name makes me smile, but the variety and quality of the in-store selection makes me eager to amble over, without an umbrella, in torrential rains. It's one of those places. You will find just what you need, no matter the environmental or professional woes of the day. In fact, the owner of the store amply impoved my NYE party last year, suggesting the perfect plates, sauces, etc. for a pizza party with teenagers. read more

Thanks to Yelp for turning me on to Hill's Kitchen. I work on the Hill and have walked by the store many, many times. For some reason I thought it was a kitchen design store and never went in. Thanks to Yelpers for setting me straight. What a great store! They have an incredible collection of kitchen utensils/gadgets/accessories. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. I'll never go to Williams-Sonoma or Sur La Table again. I know where I'll be shopping from now on for Father's Day, Mother's Day and for any other gifts for the cooking enthusiasts in my life. After reading reviews I really wanted to like the place, and actually I did. I rated three stars because they just didn't have what I was looking for. They carry MAC Knives, but didn't have have their standard 8.5" chef knife. They carry several lines of cookwear, but didn't have a nonstick V-rack. The people are nice and helpful, and it's easy to get to. read more

if I'm in the area, I'll stop by here again just to browse. Stuff in here is good-quality but expensive; they have top-of-the-line brands only, such as Kuhn Rikon pressure cookers, All-Clad pots and pans, Swiss Diamond pots and pans, etc. They also have a lot of other little doodads, like filter-as-you-drink water bottles, compact veggie choppers, heart-shaped measuring spoons, etc. A bookcase-sized collection of cookbooks in the back, fun to browse through. Employees seemed very knowledgeable and friendly. They do not serve/sell food. However, they do sell various kinds of jarred pestos, honey, and other spreads/sauces. I saw "Sweet Potato Butter" in there, too. I'd recommend it, if you have the money. read more

I went to Hill's Kitchen for the first time today for a North Indian cooking class. Not only did I learn a lot, but the teacher threw in a lot of interesting stories from his time in India, and pieces of historical trivia about the region's cuisine as well. He made enough sample food to leave me quite full, and it was an enjoyable experience all around. The shop itself was nice too - they have a good selection of cookware, and it feels much more interesting than a regular chain store. I'd recommend the class, and I'll certainly be going back to try another one. read more

There's a good selection of kitchenware here, and it's loaded with cute things. The owner is a huge Nats fan, though, so don't try to wear gear from rival teams inside the store! You'll get a talking-to, even if the owner isn't there. I had to take off my Giants cap before entering! read more

Cutesy store for all your kitchen needs. I've never seen so many cool cookie cutters in my life! They just got one of the Capitol Building and it's really neat. I'd like to try the cooking lessons, but the lady working there said they sell out at the speed of light, so don't know if that is going to work. At any rate, they have a lot of the stuff that you'd expect from a kitchen store, but then they have a lot of original stuff like cupcake party kits and all kinds of crazy kitchen gadgets. The prices are fairly reasonable, considering this is a one-of store. I was happy to support this local business :) read more

Love this place. I think I visit at least once a month, if not more, to buy something. Dealing with staff is like dealing with old friends (ok, yeah, I know that's not such a profound pronouncement - - since I come here so much - - but hey, i didn't PLAN to visit constantly, plus I grew up in a tiny town, so I appreciate the personal touch. Doesn't everyone like to be greeted by their neighborhood proprietor? I grew up thinking that was normal,) But what I particularly like is that: if this store didn't exist, I'd likely drive to Virginia; this store exists, so I never need to drive to "Sur la Table" or whadevvah. Hill's Kitchen is the best retail operation on Capitol Hill. The owner and staff are extremely knowledgeable about their products and moreover, they really engage the customers, offer help, and provide a pleasant and friendly atmosphere. These days I do all my kitchen-product shopping there; it's accessible by metro, bus and of course foot! Just yesterday, I took a cooking class and learned how to make four dishes with eggplant! There are many other course offerings, including knife skills, how to make pierogies, and many more. A real gem! read more

Staff is super helpful without being condescending, and they manage to fit a ton of inventory in a small space without it being too cluttered. It's hard to find the kind of service and selection you'll get here. Not only is Leah extremely knowledgeable, but she remembers EVERY one of her customers and knows what we tend to buy. She can answer any question ranging from the best equipment to buy to the best techniques and recipes to try when you are using the equipment. She's great, and she's also taken the time to hire GREAT staff. They're always polite and probably some of the most helpful people I've had the pleasure of meeting. Hill's Kitchen is a really wonderful, special place. The owner, (a DC native!), has really taken great care to stock her store with a brilliant mix of fantastic and just plain useful items. For example, I needed small glass jars to deliver homemade pesto to various friends. Of course Hill's Kitchen had exactly what I wanted! It took me six months of living near eastern market to get into this store. Why? I loved this shop! Went in to buy a present for a foodie friend. Got a cute cake server and champagne stopper for her (she was have a cake and champagne party) and a rolling pin and vinaigrette bottle for me. It's the kind of place where you can find something for $3 or $300. The staff were very friendly and they have cooking classes. Highly recommended. read more
