Ariana, the owner, grew up in Mount Pleasant and decided to open a pottery studio once she lost her federal job in 2025. My eight-year-old daughter and I took a class just the two of us on a Saturday afternoon. Here's our experience. 1) Experience: It was truly wonderful! Ariana starts the class to the level and experience of pottery you have. She let my daughter lead what she wanted to learn. Providing the clay and supplies, she taught us how to mold clay, add decorations to it, paint clay, and more. Ariana has two pottery wheels to if that's more your style, but my daughter opted for molding it with her hands. She made a jar with a lid and I made a dumpling-shaped ring holder. Ariana has a kiln and fires the pottery. Once it's done, you return to pick up your work. Ariana gives 20% of her profit to organizations doing good work. 2) Space: It's in a small garage, but it is SO COOL! It doesn't feel to stuffy at all. Ariana decorates it with plants, lots of natural light, and there are shelves with pottery waiting to be fired and a little store where Ariana sells her pottery, ceramics, and jewelry. She's so talented! Since it's in a garage, there isn't a restroom so plan accordingly. 3) Neighborhood: It's in the heart of Mount Pleasant close to public art, restaurants, and more. On I usually find street parking along Irving Street NW (where I used to live) or the Columbia Heights Metro is a few blocks away.

Let asside the joy I felt making something that looks beautiful just with my bare hand and seeing how the end product would like along the process... The thing I would like to write this review most, is the grounding sensation that I have felt while going through this process. I kept hearing and reading about folks talking about how working with clay refines their energy and balances it, until I had the experience by myself. There is definitely something about staying mindful and focussed while aligning your body movement and mental focus during working with clay to make pottery. It felt really theraputical and grounding. It is really a whole body experience. I am grateful to Ariana and to great instructor that gave me the class and I would absolutely go for it again and again and again. And I recommend you all to try it; especially at such a special space that Ariana has put together for her studio.

HOWEVER, while the establishment and materials were of quality, the owner/host was did not have that every this particular night. I am not sure if it was just a bad night for her on because it was a Tuesday (when she's usually closed) that made her have a bad attitude. Our guest arrived 15-20 minutes in advance and while the start time was not until 7:00pm, she was very snappy with turning our guest away and telling the the event did not begin until 7:00. Her demeanor was not inviting nor friendly. They waited in the car and did not feel comfortable entering until the birthday girl arrived. At 7:00 when we entered, while we were all in a good mood, we felt like we were walking on egg shells when it came to using her materials or asking questions. We couldn't grab our own choices of doormats. She said this was her policy, but how she convert that was of poor taste. Again it wasn't what she said, but how she said it. I will be honest and say tried to fix her attitude during the explanation of directions, however we could feel her irritation. Her communications and expectations were not properly communicated. Hence why she was annoyed by how we were using the paint... not to her liking. You were to put it ON the doormat, NOT on the table paper. She never said that. We all have bad days, but in a business where hospitality and a welcoming demeanor is necessary to keep your customers coming back or making referrals, that energy needs to be minimized as much as possible. She didn't say we had done anything and even the birthday girl's mother-in-law said she think she just had a bad day. I gave her four stars because our doormats came out great. Also while she attempted to change the trajectory of her attitude and we ultimately had to make our experience what it was and for the most part we all enjoyed eachother. I'll likely be back, because I believe in supporting Black Women always. I pray my experience when I go back with other is better. I believe in her.

As someone who has been throwing pots for a few years, I'm definitely eyeing the the Studio Artists which is designed for independent ceramicists. The studio space itself is pretty large and Kendra keeps a large supply of clay, tools, and other items you'll need for throwing pots or hand building. Even more importantly, pots get fired pretty quickly so you're not waiting weeks to finally get to your batch of pots that need to be glazed, etc. Kendra also works with you on honing in on any techniques if you've got the basics down, or helping you master the foundational skills. Given the pottery studios in the DMV are always full and have waitlists, it was very exciting to see this new studio open up and actually get a spot without wondering if I'll ever get a chance to take a class!

I've now had the pleasure of working with two different teachers at WSS and came away impressed both times. This school is a great place to build your skills, knowledge and confidence as an artist (i.e., impressive array of class and workshop options, small class sizes, comfortable and supportive environment, strong sense of community). I highly recommend WSS for anyone truly interested in growing as an artist.
