I think the pictures I saw online made me think the store was bigger and many "intimate" or small spiritual stores can seem unfriendly and standoffish sometimes. Usually they have to warm up to strangers, but the man working there was very friendly. He let me know he was there if I needed anything then let me browse without hovering. The prices seemed fair. Oh, did I mention they also do readings? I don't let just anyone read me so I'd have to go a few more times and get to know the owner (she does the readings) before I take advantage of that offer. Overall I really like the store and plan to go back!

The Hour specializes in new and vintage merchandise dedicated to one of my most favorite distractions: the cocktail. But not just any cocktail. Oh, no. The cocktail of the 40s, 50s, and 60s. A bygone era when Tom Collins was king, a circle dress hung in any self-respecting woman's closet, and the cocktail party was a regular weekend occurrence. (To drive home their commitment to this epoch, The Hour sells "Mad Men" box sets.) The vintage glass collection here is mesmerizing. I was particularly taken with the cocktail sets -- gorgeous pitchers or shakers plus the requisite sipping glasses -- and a little stand of silver and stone picks. Husband was particularly taken by the flasks, especially a masculine looking glass one with a mahogany brown leather cover. He also wanted to walk out with a fun set of golden Toledo cocktail swords. En garde! I spent a lot of time in the little back room that features cocktail party baubles and accessories any woman would covet, from sparkly rhinestone broaches and silk clutches, to exquisite cocktail rings with oversized flowers and feathered hair pieces. I picked up a funky portable purse hook with a fun, retro design...for some reason I've been wanting one for ages, and where better to buy one than at an independent neighborhood store? Not only is The Hour a completely absorbing place to browse and shop; not only is the merchandise impeccably selected and thoughtfully displayed; not only are the prices fair and the staff friendly; but they have also partnered with St. Coletta of Greater Washington, a non-profit that works with adults with intellectual disabilities. The Hour sells pretty glass coasters and trays made by the St. Coletta community, and for each purchase donates $5 back to St. Coletta. Supporting a small local business that, in turn, is giving back to my community? Yes, please.

The shop had a great variety of books and bookish items from stickers to clothing and everything in between. I loved looking through each area. There was also an author there signing books and some seats throughout the store to sit in. However, I wish the staff was more friendly and attentive. When we were ready to check out, the two staff members were chatting to each other and didn't even acknowledge us waiting to buy our books at the counter. I placed the books down and greeted them politely, and the staff member directly behind the register didn't greet us, continued their conversation with their coworker and just started scanning books without even looking at us or acknowledging us. It was the staff member to the side who then started friendly conversation, but again, the cashier didn't really say much of anything besides our total and if we wanted a bag. Neither of the employees even mentioned the author who was there signing books, and there was no info (at least that we saw) in the store about the author, the book or signing event. I kind of felt bad for the author. Around the store, there were also little signs about books and what they were about, etc. Except, for a large number of them, there wasn't any stock of the book it mentioned. I wish they would update them or remove them if the book sells out. There were a few where I loved the note and wanted to grab the book, but then it wasn't on the shelf. I want to support small businesses and absolutely love romance books, but the customer service really needs improvement here. Sadly, this experience doesn't make me want to come back.
