The atmosphere was very inviting and allow for a stress-free fun activity. The overall candle making process only took about 30-45min depending on your mood to choose the candle scents. It will take 2 hours for the candle to cool down which allow me to go grab a quick lunch. The location also has a jewelry making place called Fawne that you can do while you wait! I made a reservation for my husband and I to make candles. We had a good time smelling and selecting our favorite scents. While we had a full hour, we were done in 30 minutes. A few things to be aware of: 1) Location - the site doesn't include directions. They are not IN the Union Market / food stall space but in the walkway behind it that has various shops. 2) Price - The $15 pp reservation fee goes towards the cost of the candle. You have a choice behind medium or large - the latter is $50 each - which I was a bit taken aback by since it wasn't listed on the site. 3) Time to pick up - We were told it would take 3 hours for our candles to be ready vs the 2 hours listed on the site. I had planned for us to walk around and have lunch but 3 hours was a bit too long so we opted to come back tomorrow. read more

Do you love candles that have a lasting scent??!! Well if you do, this is a fun experience! It's not a cheap experience but it sure is fun. You come in and get to smell and curate the scent you would like. You are then given instructions on how to put the scent in, how to stir, and so on. You also get to name your candle!!!! Oh and you get to select the color of your jar!! Once you have completed all that, the hostess will take your candle and give you a window time frame to come and retrieve your candle. I believe we were told if they weren't pick up in a week, it would be donated. They also have two sizes you can select! Such a fun and personal experience!! Now the after effect of the candle is wonderful! The smell lingers and smells just as the scents you selected!! It actually slow burns as well, so I am enjoying every second of it lasting!! All in all this is an activity a group would enjoy but it will come with a price tag. read more

It was really fun and we got to choose our favorite sense to make our own candle. They have many scents to choose from and you get to select your own candle jar which differ in color and size. I think the price is great seeing that you take the time to make your own candle with scents like fresh linen and santal. Place has a nice amount of space. The selection for scents was perfect. The service was great. The instructor was nice and friendly. Kinda wish they spaced out reservations by ten mins so everyone isn't crowded trying to smell the scents at one time. But great outcome. First candle making experience went well! I enjoyed it and left with a great smelling candle. District Candle Lab was a vibe. A vibe that let me know that I am in the wrong business. $45 for a small candle is a nice way to get a few bucks. The locations ducked off in an alleyway, so if you're in this industrial looking area, don't look past the alley lol. The interior has very nice decor, and the exterior is the same. They had plenty of scent choices that I enjoyed, that would be pleasing to anybody. The service was good. 1 thing to know is to give yourself time. It takes approximately 2-hours after making your candle to be able to pick it up as the wax has to fully set before DCL allows you to take your candle. They give you a week to return for pickup and if you don't then they will donate it. I give this experience a 3.5/5. It was fun and different, but I could see myself making my own candles for cheaper with wax and fragrance/essential oils and wooden wicks. I chose 4 earthy scents read more

Had a blast at DCL making candles with some friends! When we first arrived we were seated immediately and given some introductory information while we waited. They were already set up for our group so it was as easy as having a seat! Once we got started our instructor Sage walked us through each step and we had plenty of time to do each thing. My favorite part was smelling all the fragrances and picking out our favorite 6. Thank goodness for the coffee beans because after a while I surely couldn't even tell the difference! From start to finish it was just under an hour and the perfect activity for a date night or time out with friends! Since I had an evening appointment I had to wait to pick up "Jade" but I can't wait to take her home! A few notes: give yourself time to find parking so you're not late and try not to bring too much excess stuff with you. For $50 it was worth it! Thanks again to Sage, Lesly, and Jasmin! It is also worth mentioning that DCL shares space with Fawne charm bar. Went to District Candle Lab as a girl's date with my friend. There was street parking but Union Market has garage space available as well. We participated in both candle making and charm necklace (both in the same location). Activity 1: Candle Making We were able to create customized one-wick candles of our dream! Definitely have to get into their new fall scents. Mixed in some base scents as well, but it's giving FALL! My scent choices: - Fireside Marshmallow - Cuban Tobacco - Black Currant Vanilla - Smoke House - Pumpkin Pecan Pie Activity 2: Charm Necklace We made charm necklaces with 5 charms to give it a fuller look. All necklaces are non-tarnish but the charms vary (labeled). So many charms to choose from & this experience truly awakened the child inside of me. You can make a bracelet, necklace, charm link for your purse...you choose! The prices were reasonable and vary depending on your choices. The instructors were very friendly and make both experience straight forward. 10/10 read more

Such a cute spot that offers make your own candles, jewelry (including make your own charm bracelets, necklaces, and earrings), and other cute gifts. Conveniently located behind Union Market, it's a fantastic spot for a casual activity that engaged (almost) all the senses (you aren't eating the candles but you can grab a great meal around there before or after!). They offer standard and seasonal scents and there is certainly something for everyone. Staff is friendly and classes are fun. Only drawback is you have to leave your candle there to dry, which throws in an extra logistical wrench. Wish there were a way to more rapidly cool the wax to take home day of. Definitely not cheap but it's a fun experience and it's a cure and quality personalized candle. read more

We had an amazing time at District Candle Lab. Imani was the employee who helped us. She was super friendly and explained every step in an easy to understand manner. The process is straightforward to make a custom candle. They give you a sheet to select fragrances based on premade candles you can sample. Next you're given the fragrances in oil form to finalize choices which are added to a beaker. From the beaker it goes into your selected container (tin $38, jar $48, or large jar). The employee adds wax which you mix with the scent and then you leave it to cool for a couple hours. We went to lunch and the candles were complete when we returned. It was a lot of fun especially if you're into candles or fragrances in general. There is also a charm/jewelry design shop in the same location. Parking is limited on the street but there's a garage nearby. Reservations are recommended especially on the weekend! When we returned to pickup our candles around 4 pm it was packed. read more

I booked a candle making session for myself and a family member. We enjoyed the experience of creating the candles but were very put off by the staff. One staff member coughed during our entire visit unmasked and without covering her mouth. If we'd brought masks we definitely would have put them on to protect ourselves. We also overheard the staff speaking negatively about two customers during our visit. I found it odd how comfortable they seemed speaking negatively about customers in front of other customers. Made me wonder what they may have said about us after we left. read more

I really like the concept of the charm bar and think it has a lot of potential. However, I believe that, similar to making reservations for candle making, the charm bar should also require reservations. When I visited on a Saturday, the line was extremely long. There was no one at the front to explain the situation, so it was unclear what was going on. Additionally, there was a wait for the trays, and it seemed like many of the charms were running low. I'm not sure how often they restock. Lastly, due to the backlog, we had to pick up our bracelet the next time. As I mentioned, I love the idea, and I hope that it runs more smoothly in the future! read more

I visited District Candle Lab/Fawne to make charm bracelets with some friends last weekend. The space is kind of small but decorated and organized nicely. There was a candle making session in progress on the right side of the store but aside from that there were maybe 2 or 3 other people in the store looking at the charm bracelets. I noticed that we weren't greeted by the staff members sitting at the register at the back of the store. This was our first time visiting, so we didn't know what to do for the charm bracelets. On the left side of the store there was a large table with all of the charms, necklaces and bracelets to create your own piece of jewelry. We eventually noticed a few small signs with instructions along with trays to put our pieces. We spent about 10 minutes deciding our pieces and the charms. The selection of charms is nice, but limited. We each found 2 or 3 charms we really liked and walked to the front to check out. The interaction with the woman at the checkout register was a bit uncomfortable and dry. She didn't explain the process to us so we had a lot of questions and she responded in a "matter of fact" and irritated type of way. I specifically asked her if I would be able to take one of the charms off completely if I didn't like how it came out and she spoke to me as if I was dumb even though she misinterpreted the question. Once we sorted everything out, she then told us our pickup time is 3 pm (it was about 1pm) but they would call us when they were done. We went about our afternoon. Even though they didn't call us, we returned around 5:30 as we were getting ready to leave the area. Our bracelets were ready and waiting for us which we were glad for since my friends were just visiting DC for the day. But we were kind of annoyed that they didn't call us like they said they would. Overall, the experience was nice, the cost is reasonable, and the choices were cute. But we did not necessarily feel welcomed our appreciated in the space. The customer service definitely has room for improvement. read more

I've gone here a couple times now to make candles and a charm necklace, and I'd keep coming back to make candles. It's a great activity for anyone visiting from out of town or just for a fun activity with friends/family. To make your candle, you sniff a bunch of the candles they have on the wall and narrow it down to 3-4 scents you want to mix together to make your own candle. I recommend making a reservation so you don't get turned away. I went once in August 2024 and then again in November 2024 to make a nice Christmas candle with their latest yummy holiday scents. If I could give one critique though, I would say to get rid of some of the candles that people don't like/use frequently because some of them don't smell the greatest... but to each their own! read more

For the price paid, if your candle has virtually no smell, store should be open to requests to purchase extra "boost". (They would not consider when asked the next day after placing on melter and 100% liquified yet very little smell). The store is lovely and staff could not be nicer but due to lack of customer service after the fact, will not be back. If you want to be insulted and treated like your money doesn't matter then come here for an incredibly degrading experience. Not only were the charm bracelets so expensive, you do not get to assemble it yourself, and you are treated like an idiot. The woman said "our customers are idiots" when I asked why we don't get to put together the bracelets ourselves. I am really upset by the lack of customer service this store provides. If I could give negative stars I would. I encourage the store owner to conduct a more thorough interview process before they hire people that represent their brand so poorly. So if you believe yourself to be an "idiot" come for a dc experience like no other. read more

Concept was so cute. However, when we entered the wear fawne charm bar-we were not greeted and or told that if bracelets were made It was next day pick up (we came from out of town) . I've been a big fan of Olive and Loom since their Pike & Rose days and was super excited to hear about this new sister business of theirs! I went to check it out recently and thought the shop space was VERY cute and modern!!! Review for Fawne charm bar -- it's ok! I had fun picking out charms, they had a nice variety and a nice selection of chains in store. I was super excited about my order, and was told it would be ready before 6pm that day and they would call me when I could pick it up. However Thursday came around and I didn't get a call, and there's no number to call the store so I got nervous and went back to pick it up. When I opened the box I was a little disappointed. I had 9 charms for a medium ish chain and they were spaced out so far that the charms went all the way around the length of the necklace basically to the back. They were also spaced out unevenly which was a bummer. No one talked to me at the store or let me know what the spacing would be, or that they wouldn't recommend the number of charms for the length of chain I picked. It was just not what I was hoping for after spending $100. I ended up detaching and reattaching the charms myself to have a better look, so alls well that ends well. read more
