Was driving on the road with a friend and passed the ski swap signs - so we decided to turn around and check it out. Ended up spending the next 2.5 hrs there learning about gear that I'd been wanting to get but knew nothing about, getting fitted correctly, and ultimately getting everything I needed to get started on my snow sport journey. 3 star for the rental service 5 star for the sales service. My friend and I had to wait for over 15 minutes to do a rental sizing and setup. No one said anything to us about how we need to wait or they were busy or anything. Someone from up front saw us standing around and asked what we needed, then got the person who does the fitting. The fitting went well. And I got out within 10 minutes of starting the rental process. So that was fast in my opinion. But the wait was kind of annoying. While I was on the mountain the front bindings kept coming loose. After a few hours of dealing with this. I was done. It was my first time snowboarding and I kept having to stop every few minutes in my runs to tighten the binds. At the end of the day I tightened the front bindings and my buddy who was right next to me saw it come loose as soon as I started riding. When I brought it up when I was doing the return they tested them out and said they looked fine and maybe they didn't work right because it got cold... which is a strange thing to say about snowboarding gear, which is obviously designed to be in the cold. Eventually after talking to them about my experience they gave me a free rental for next time. I will give them another try with the next rental in a couple weeks. Sales were great helped me find some budget gloves and goggles to buy for my trip. Overall definitely 4.5 stars, since they took care of me when I told them about my issues. I will be going back to buy my gear in the future. And I recommend them as well read more

I visited in September - before the season's rush began - and got some very great advice and gear. They first let me know that the old pair of skis I had brought in were no longer safe to use and took them for me so I didn't have to find a place to recycle them. I was able to get a really decent pair of Salomon Stance80 skis from last season for a decent price. The person I worked with (whose name I did not think to ask for) was very attentive, and took the time to tell me about the different ski lengths, and what my options were from the building next-door (where used and past season goods are housed). We then went back over to the main store and he measured my feet then brought out boots for me to try on. He walked me through the pros and cons of what I tried on and made sure that I was comfortable. I left with the most comfortable pair of ski boots I've ever worn in my life, Tecnica Mach Sport 75 MV Ski Boots. What I loved about this experience is that the staff is very down to earth and it doesn't feel like they are there for the sale. They are there to make sure that you enjoy yourself while on the mountain and stay comfortable. They are very friendly and you can tell that this is truly their passion, not just a job , I will be a lifelong customer of Hillcrest because of this! read more

I had a very positive experience at Hillcrest on Thursday and again today with checking the release of my ski bindings on 2 new pairs of skis. Koltyn made sure they were set properly and safe to take out and play on Mt Hood this Summer. He also did a special 'slush' hot wax for the conditions on the mountain when we have warm conditions and soft snow. I should mention Todd as well for his help in getting one pair of bindings set after another shop said they failed their test procedures. Good shop with great employees!!! read more

Must give you guys a shout out for saving our day of shred. for Xmas, my son got a Burton board, boots and bindings from his uncle, ordered from a competitor. Just so happened, the channel hardware was missing from the "package deal" so we went into Hillcrest where they gave us the hardware for free, even tho it was ordered from a competitor in the first place. They have exceptional customer service and even during holiday weekend with a line at the door, they took good care of us. We also purchased a new skateboard deck, bearings, stomp pad, another pair of snowboard boots and 2 sets of burton gloves. As a family who lives the "board life" from surf, skate and snow, HIllcrest is our one stop shop for everything! We went here after stopping at another shop in the city. It was like night and day. Both shops had a good selection, but Hillcrest was so much easier navigate through the merchandise and the staff was top notch. Seriously some of the best service I've had in a retail establishment. Brayden helped us pick out boots, bindings and a snow board for my son. We were on a budget and knew we wanted to blow the largest portion on his boots, them work out way from there. He helped us pick a high quality pair of boots, found us a mid range binding that he felt was perfect and then steered us toward one of their "used" boards. The board actually looked brand new. If he didn't tell us it was a used board, we wouldn't have been able to tell. I am guessing it was used as a display board and not actually on the slopes. Zach the manager helped us check out and even gave a discount for buying a whole package!! My son also got coupons for lifetime wax and board tuneup! I highly recommend this place. I had my brand new skis / binding checked at Ht Hood last week. The ski tech wasn't familiar with this binding model and said they 'failed'. I brought these to Hillcrest and Koltyn (with some input from Todd) figured out why it didn't act normally and they are now checked and safe! He then suggested a Summer / 'Slush' wax. It was a very good wax for when it gets soft this time of year at Palmer. Good staff and GREAT service from the folks at Hillcrest! read more

Our son was growing and rather than buy new skis and boots for one year, we decided to get season rentals. The promise of season rentals is that if something is wrong, bring it back, and they will fix it. Well he skied once and the boots caused blisters and foot pain. We took the boots back and they didn't have the correct size but wanted to sell us $50 insoles to "fix" the problem. We asked for a prorated refund and they said that since we rented early, there was no way to prorate...they said it would actually be a $60 fee to tune the skis so they could re-rent them. The ski shop manager was rude and said that there was nobody higher than him to talk to. I asked for his boss and he gave me the owner's card. I am drafting an email to him now to explain a $200 rental that was used for 1 day and caused pain and blisters with no help from staff. At this time, we will not return. read more

I had a really horrible experience with the owner today. He took a phone call as I was evaluating Ski Goggles (in summer) and then handed me off saying that the Goggles would be significantly discounted off the sale price. Each kid got a new pair - 4 Goggles - and we bought 3 pairs of boots. Over $1200 in spending of ski stuff in Summer. The owner came out at the end (after the lady helper had helped me to paint-pen kids names into the Goggles) saying he didn't mean to say that he was going to discount and that he was distracted by a more important customer. I will have no problem never being a customer again and I hope people see that this guy is a liar and cheat. read more

Picked up a second pair of skis at the end of the season. Scot S. got the bindings set-up and the skis tuned and waxed for a session on the Palmer at Timberline today (June 28). Absolutely perfect job! I think my skis were sliding better than my instructor's! Scot also got my other skis cleaned, checked-out, and set up for the next season. I know they're going to be great. I bought a tin of glidewax for skiing. When I got home and opened it, I found the wax half gone, the foam pad torn off the applicator, and I saw the tin had dings in it--clearly a used item. Would give 10 stars if possible. Awesome gear selection and had good sales going on. A true "support your local businesses" spot! They've been around forever and it appears they're still going strong. I haven't been in since I was little when I first started snowboarding and we used to rent gear there. I wasn't disappointed going back in. Matt helped me find an uncommon item (binding straps) that I couldn't find anywhere else in the area (I'm in Vancouver). In a pinch the night before planning on going to the mountain I realized I needed this piece of equipment. Matt went out of his way to ensure what I was looking for was going to fit my bindings as I did not have my board with me. He took a new pair of bindings out of the box so we could compare the straps to the ones I was purchasing. The price I paid for the straps was probably 5x less than I would have paid had I gone directly through Burton. Excellent experience overall and I will be back. Thanks guys! read more

After renting countless snowboards from different resorts, I was considering buying my own. One bad experience at Summit Ski resort really made my decision come easy after they gave me a crappy board and bindings to use. On my way back home I saw Hillcrest Ski Shop. I'm so glad I stopped by this shop!! I walked in and let a few people there know I have some questions about snowboards and that I might be there a while. They didn't mind answering all of my questions and gave such great advice. Best part, the sales staff are actual snowboarders in the Portland area so they know what they're taking about. Such a relief working with sales staff that has years of experience with many types of gear. Not like big box stores where they have no experience and will just sell you whatever is in front of you. One sales rep in particular went above and beyond. I can't thank Shaylee enough for her time spent working with me while I was weighing my options to build my complete snowboard set. She went through countless boxes and sections throughout the entire store looking to find pieces that fit me. She made the buying experience pleasant and worked with management to get me a great deal!! Hillcrest staff also assembled the pieces for me and were very friendly. As someone who has worked in a customer service role, I was shocked at how rude the guy at the ski counter was to me yesterday. I had a valid question about how I was charged for renting skis due to the store being closed on Easter Sunday. Before he could even understand my question fully, he was defensive, outright disrespectful, and embarrassing as he was argumentative in front of other witnessing customers and coworker. He argued that he wasn't the one that charged me and that I am wrong. Even if that is so, the way the situation was handled was uncalled for. If you represent the company you should act like you care about who walks through the door and hear customers concerns. In the long term, this company will be losing more business due to their present actions and attitude. read more
