Our distillery tour was sort of ho-hum. Not a lot to see and not a well trained guide. ("We remove the bungs before rolling the casks into position" -- sorry, that would drain the barrel if you did that.) Surprised the tasting cost money, but we tried the Midsummer Night's Dram because they are so hard to get. Better was our lunch in the restaurant at the distillery. Absolutely beautiful property! It's less than 30 minutes from Park City, but give yourself an hour with parking and the shuttle. The shuttle driver, Mr.Bill, gives a great tour up the mountain and back. The parking lots have very limited seating while waiting for the shuttle (both directions) and no cover at the top. Views are amazing and they have a great menu. I ordered the Refectory salad with goat cheese, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, and jicama. Absolutely delicious!!! My son had the refectory burger with rosemary and salt fries (addicting). The whiskey onion jam is amazing! We shared the Mac and cheese with brisket. It had a hint of chipotle and was good, but I wouldn't order it again. It was fairly busy and our server didn't check in us without having to flag him down. Nice guy, just not attentive, especially with refills or clearing plates. There's plenty of history on the walls of the restaurant and the walk on the backside of the building is beautiful. About a 30 minute drive from Park City. Make sure to give yourself some extra time if you book the distillery tour since you have to park at the bottom and wait for a shuttle bus to bring bring your up to the top. We bookend the distillery tour through open table for 12pm. Got there at right at 11:52am and the shuttle bus came a couple minutes later. There is a lounge where you can what for the back shuttle bus. Mr Bill the driver will give you some background information as he's driving you up. The white van is for employees only. This was so much fun! I highly recommend this tour. It's free. You just need to book ahead of time. The tour is every hour. Some guest asked if they could join the tour and it wasn't a problem at all since some people didn't show up. Our tour guide Dan was awesome. Very informative. Love taking tours with wonderful guides. He took us to the distillery building and explained the whole process of how whiskey/bourbon is made. All very interesting. You will have to come and visit to find the secrets. Wink wink. After the tour, we had a tasting. I wasn't sure how it worked. I just ordered 5 different ones to try. Some of them were specials. The total ended up being $35 for the tasting plus tip. Still fun. Austin was also very informative about anything you needed to know about whiskey or local venues. After that we had a wonderful lunch. Did not disappoint. Ordered the trout. Drinks were so good too. Loved the drink Austin recommended-rolling fog. Passion fruit with gin. The drink was beautiful. Just phenomenal on every level. A distillery just off the slopes holds some of the best food, and certainly the best drinks in Park City. High West is situated in what appears to be an old ski lodge, which has been converted to a functional distillery. We rolled up on a random Friday afternoon and the wait was substantial. However if you're nice, and if there's enough room, you can talk your way into the bar (AKA the "saloon") and wait there instead. Given the location, I was pleasantly surprised to see that most cocktails were only $16. While that's not inexpensive, the Eagles Nest and Capen & Goodrich were two of the best cocktails we've ever had, period. We managed to guzzle down two a piece while we waited! Was the wait that long, or was the booze that good? Maybe a little of both. We would have gone for round three but we got called to our table. Since we dropped in here on a whim, and it was already late afternoon, we resisted our base instincts and snacked light. We ended up ordering the onion soup and the poutine, both were packed with flavor. Only after leaving did we realize how much salt was in each dish, as we spent the rest of the day guzzling water (no, we didn't go skiing). High west holds the honor of being the only liquor tasting permitted in Utah. Considering the passion of the staff, the ambiance, and the quality of the experience, they truly deserve that designation. First we went to the tasting room, where we learned so much from our bartender/staff. He got feedback on which whiskeys we liked and based on preferences gave us a list of recommended labels to try when we got home. Next we moved to the dining room for lunch, where the food and drink menu allowed us to pair their whiskeys with some delicious local dishes. The best part of the experience was probably the location. The building is designed to showcase the gorgeous and quintessential Utah landscape with many giant glass windows and interior decor that you'll want to replicate in your own home. So glad we decided to come out here during our weekend trip to Salt Lake City. The Distillery & Refectory is tucked away into the mountains with amazing views. Mr Bill was a great tour guide for the 5 min bus ride up from where you park. The whiskey tasting was a huge treat and their food was great too. We were here for brunch time, did the Hash and it was top notch. The entire restaurant has fun history on the walls to take a look at with a solid gift shop as well. If you're ever in the area, I highly recommend getting a reservation for the restaurant and a tour if they are offering it at the time. read more

During a road trip vacation in October and having driven all day from Reno, we were famished by the time we arrived in Park City. Not only were we ready to eat, but we really just wanted to relax. High West was recommended by a couple of different friends and I'm happy that we stopped here for a late lunch. As popular as this place is, we were lucky to get seated right away. I was immediately struck by the cool decor, a modern saloon vibe. As expected, there are lots of cocktails on the menu and if my husband and I were more into these, I'm sure we would have ordered one, but we opted for water and a few different dishes to share: -Blue Crab & Pimento Mac n Cheese -Butternut Squash Soup of the Day -Deviled Eggs -The Tacos (Niman Ranch Sirloin Carne Asada, Ranchero Crema, pickled onions, and cotija) -The Burger (8 oz Proprietary blend, Gold Creek smoked cheddar, American cheese, American Prairie Bourbon onion & bacon jam with house pickles on a caraway seeded bun, house cut parmesan with rosemary fries) My favorites were the mac n cheese, the soup, the deviled eggs, and the fries. What can I say, I love sides! The restaurant and saloon are located in the historic Ellsworth J. Beggs House and Livery Stable built in 1907 (according to the placard on the outside of the building). There are usually tours of the saloon, but not now with COVID-19 restrictions. You can shop in the general store, but there was a line to get in due to capacity limits, too, so we skipped it. We were so full that we had to also skip dessert, but just know that they have a dish called the Grillswith, cinnamon roasted Krispy Kreme Donuts, vanilla ice cream, and Rendezvous Rye caramel; maybe next time! read more

What an adventure we had out here yesterday! We decided to have a little bit of staycation and come out to Wanship to visit for a sensory tour and a meal. They used to do distillery tours accompanied by whiskey however because of COVID, they're no longer allowed to have the public in the production area of the distillery. So now they've switched to a sensory tour where they talk about how whiskey is made while they serve you a whiskey flight. There are only so many time slots for the sensory tour, so it is advised to book in advance. It was a beautiful snow stormy day and the tasting room felt like we were in a snowglobe! It was so much fun to ask all your burning whiskey questions while sampling the various kinds. I'm not a huge whiskey fan but I surprisingly enjoyed the Double Rye and the Midsummer's Night's Dram. Afterwards, we had a late lunch. They only serve food until 4pm on Thursdays before they start Supper Club. The Supper Club is a pre-fixed menu with live music and reservations are highly recommended. When you approach Wanship, you kind of feel like you're in the middle of nowhere, and you kind of are. Don't worry, you're in the right area! High West Distillery is located on the Blue Sky Ranch. I didn't learn much about the ranch but I think it's a luxury mountain resort type spot. It sounds like rooms at the Blue Sky Lodge are very expensive. When you enter the ranch, you'll pass through the gate and park and a shuttle will take you to the top where the distillery is located where the views are absolutely amazing! We decided against driving to a whiskey distillery in the middle of nowhere on a dark and snow stormy night. Unfortunately for us, so did every other cab driver, Lyft driver, and Uber driver! My advice for anyone who doesn't want to risk driving above .05 blood alcohol after visiting a whiskey distillery is to call a cab service ahead of time and arrange a ride in advance. Do not use Uber or Lyft. They are unreliable. Or just make sure to reward your DD for resisting delicious temptation with a bottle of whiskey at the gift shop on your way out! I would also like to add how gracious the staff were when it appeared that we were going to be stuck in Wanship for longer than we had anticipated. They gave us a few numbers for cab companies and when we ended up calling friends to come rescue us, they even gave us a table to hang out at when we didn't have a reservation. They were so hospitable and amazing! We will definitely be returning! But next time, we will drive ourselves I think. read more

Gorgeous, new distillery at Big Sky Ranch. Facility is amazing with awesome views. Currently due to covid, there aren't any operating tours, but you can do a "learning/educational" tasting. The education/is free but you have to pay for the flight of whiskey ($16-$22). They have a restaurant on sight. Recommend the chipotle squash soup. Also really enjoyed the rendezvous rye! read more

Views, views, views!!! I feel this place is very undiscovered but deserves to be discovered. About a 30 minute scenic drive from Park City. Once you arrive, you feel you are on the top of the world. Inside was warm and elegant. I was not expecting that nice of a food menu that accompanied the whiskey and drink menu. Order consisted of a whiskey flight, cheese curds, and glass of wine. Wish the whiskey flight was served at once, but it was a windy day and I think all the glasses would have tipped over. After you finish your drinks and meal, go explore the grounds! We had Sunday brunch at High West. Our family was greeted pleasantly and seated quickly. The choices of food on the buffet were plentiful and delicious. There was something for everyone. We were there with two children who were equally delighted with the food choices. The Bloody Mary was also exceptional. The views were breathtaking. We also enjoyed the "guided tour" on the shuttle. High West Distillery is definitely an attraction to come visit if your visiting from out of town and are an avid whiskey drinker. While we didn't opt in for the tour we did take the time to come up and visit the distillery and have lunch in the tasting room. As part of our lunch we had a whiskey flight and did our own tasting with good eats. Just coming up and visiting the distillery is enough for the experience, in my opinion. Riding up to the distillery from the visitor parking lot, you are greeted by Mr. Bill. While he may be a slow driver (#IYKYK) he gives great cliff notes version of the main distillery tour and it's sufficient enough for me, lol. Thanks to Sterling, our tasting room server since he provided good food recs. It was so nice to enjoy the views while sipping on our whiskey flight. If you plan on visiting the tasting room for lunch I wouldn't recommend the salads. They just aren't filling for me and lacked flavor. The trout dishes were pretty tasty and I would recommend those. If you plan on trying the whiskey flight which consists of 4/ 0.5 pours of the four famous flavors, be sure to have either some soda or soda water to chase in between each sip tasting - this will help! read more

For starters the view and setting is perfect. It's worth the drive to see that alone. I visited 3 times for lunch and a tasting. During the first lunch I had the stew which included elk, venison, and short rib. It was flavorful and hearty, without being over the top. Simple yet delicious. My wife had the trout which was excellently prepared as well. It was well seasoned with crispy skin but flaky insides. The tasting was great. The ambassador was informative and approachable. You get to learn and enjoy some fantastic whisky for a reasonable price. My last visit I had the bbq platter which included wagyu tri tip, smoked chicken, beer brats, beans, and bourbon slaw. All were excellent. I had a barrel select Rendezvous rye as well as the Rocky Mountain rye. Great time, great people, great whisky. It's a must do if you're in the area. read more

Stayed the week in park city and decided to do brunch at High West Distillery. Upon arrival, you park your car and wait in the lobby for a shuttle to pick you up. It wasn't brought to our attention we needed a reservation for brunch, but good thing they weren't so packed and were able to fit us in. So be sure to make a reservation online before going so you don't waste a drive up there. The food was delicious, from the tender meats they provided to the freshness of vegetables and homemade sauces. They don't have the largest selection of food, but it was well worth it because of the view, service and drinks. They also do tours around the facility that is free of cost and a sampler tasting for an inexpensive price. Be sure to plan ahead before making your trip up here last minute. Came for a tour of the distillery, which is free. We arrived a bit late but they just had us meet the rest of the group and jumped in. Mr Bill the shuttle driver is a wealth of knowledge of the area and history of high west. The distillery is a great attraction and you learn quite a bit. We did the tasting after which was also very educational and got to sample 5 whiskeys. From there we are lunch and everything was great. The cheese curds and lightly fried zucchini with their comeback sauce is delicious. For an entree we got the bison patty melt and the Mac and cheese which we made ultimate with bacon and brisket. The bison was cooked well and very lean with the melty cheese and onions making for a great flavor combo. The Mac and cheese is very hearty and with the brisket, gives it a nice bbq Smokey taste too it but it's not overpowering. Afterwards, went to the shop and bought a few bottles and souvenirs to take home. Highly recommend if visiting. read more

2 years and 2 days ago, we visited here for the first time, having their excellent Sunday brunch ($40)...has it changed? Well, you no longer drive up. There's now a forced shuttle with all the chipper tourists you have to wait for. Mr. Bill drives you up with a 5-minute promotional spiel. Still, the food is excellent! The terms "distillery" and "buffet brunch" don't usually go together. But every Sunday, hundreds of people make the trek to the High West whiskey distillery in Wanship to partake in some aged sprits and a tasty breakfast spread. My focus here is the Sunday buffet ... the tours, the other elements of the facility are reviewed by others. If HWD isn't in BFE, it's at least BFE-adjacent. It'll take you a good 45 minutes to get there from SLC and it's even a half-hour from Park City. You'll get off the freeway and then backtrack on the only road to the distillery, the old Lincoln Highway, through a few residential neighborhoods before you get to a gatehouse. Never fret, they'll let you through. In the winter, you'll park and be driven up the snowy, curvy roads; in the summer, you'll slowly (15 mph in this active wildlife area) make your way on curvy hills. After about a mile, you'll arrive at a beautiful facility that looks more like a ranch than a distillery. Despite the buffet, you won't forget they make whiskey (and vodka). There's a general store with hundreds of amber bottles shimmering in the well-lighted room. There's a tasting room/bar well-placed near the buffet. There are several facility tours available before and after your meal. Of course, they won't mind if you don't partake in their drinks; there's a full bar -- you heard that, a full bar in Utah open on a Sunday -- with a full bar. They make a mean Moscow Mule! I've never seen a place that is a master of one thing, but doing an exceptional job at an entirely different thing. For example, the popcorn at Les Schwab is awful, but they sure get you some damn good tires. High West makes a damn good 20-year old whiskey aged in an oak barrel ... AND they have some amazing food. The quality of the buffet is comparable to what you'll find at Sunday brunch at the Grand America, but the mood is much more laid back (I suspect it has to do with all the booze!) There's so much great stuff, you'll weep at the fact that you can't eat it all. There's a "yogurt station" with high-end muesli and fresh fruit. You'll find buttery, flakey croissants and homemade jams. You'll find a bread pudding that would get the thumbs up even from a discerning British foodie. You'll find aged cheeses and charcuterie (prosciutto, etc.). You'll find a "bagel station" with a variety of bagel flavors, cream cheeses, as well as lox and capers to get your authentic bagel experience on. There's the big, multi-meat sausage (I saw the word "venison" before distracted by other foods). Then the bacon, my good lord, the crispy, large strips of goodness. And then, what I consider to be the best part: A made-to-order omelette bar. I asked for the works, and it ended up incredibly tasty and perfectly cooked. There's also the glorious Tri-Tip. I usually associate Tri-Tip as being low on flavor and tough enough to be considered meat chewing gum. HWD's Tri-Tip is succulent, easy to cut, and even easier to relent to your desire to have more. It pairs very well with their homemade horseradish. We, of course, ended our visit at the gift shop and left with a few bottles of Vodka 7000' and Rendezvous Rye. The hostess asked if we wanted a table inside and we said yes. She sat us at a table in the doorway and the cold wind and rain came in. When our waiter finally came by we ordered drinks that were horrible. The food was all cold. All looked pretty but cold.
