This has been a family favorite for years. It's been about four years since we've been here, but we made the trek from Louisville, KY, to share the experience with our kids. We had high expectations for this place and really wanted it to be good but unfortunately it was not. My steak was very over cooked. The pasta that my husband ordered had clearly been sitting in the window for several minutes before being served. I made reservations for a Friday night at 5:30 which I was told was the only available spot. However when we arrived and left the place was half empty. Not only is High Point a unique restaurant with the history if the building and the Al Capone stories buts it's on top of the beautiful Monteagle mountain. The rooms are beautiful, especially the room with the fireplace but my favorite is the garden area or outside seating! Perfect in the spring and fall! The decor is classy, warm and well thought out. Everything is impeccable clean as usual. The food is outstanding! The chefs are top notch! The most amazing lobster bisque, delicious meals, crusty bread with real butter and tasty desserts! An unplanned stop for dinner between Atlanta and Nashville turned out to be the best meal a friend and I have had in a long time. The lobster bisque was so good my friend took two servings home. We drove by after hiking the Fiery Gizzard trail, and my husband spontaneously pulled in and said see if they require reservations. They did, but they'd had a cancellation, so we were seated immediately. The house is full of charm, and our waitress was equally charming. Easily one of the best steaks I've ever had. You can't beat the ambiance here. Beautiful stone cottage is about 100 years old. Cozy dining rooms, courteous staff. My husband and I made our first visit for our anniversary last year. We drove over one hour and decided it was well worth the drive! I had the BLT Bibb salad, the blue cheese and bacon really made it, hubby had the Cesar salad with their homemade dressing and said it was very good as well. My husband had the ribeye and baked potato, I went with the New York strip and truffle fries. Neither of us were disappointed! Both meals were delicious! My husband and I wanted to enjoy a special night out for our holiday vacation and High Point did not disappoint! The ambiance was warm, authentic and inviting. They seemed to be under staffed but the ones that were there never missed a beat. Our service was friendly, covid compliant and super fast! We ordered the lobster bisque (my husband said it was the best he's ever had!), the Fall Harvest Salad (so fresh and delicious), we split the Imperial Salmon with a side of truffle fries (they are more like steak fries, not my favorite style but very well done...crisp on the outside and tender inside), and the most amazing and unique dessert grilled pound cake with salted caramel sauce and butter pecan ice cream (super rich, glad we shared). My and my boyfriend ate here for valentines day. He called two weeks ahead of time to make the reservations and they only had one time slot remaining! I can see why they are so popular. Delicious food -- and their drinks are even better! I got a gentleman sour and it was among the best ive had. My boyfriend said his steak was cooked to perfection. What a beautiful location. This restaurant was supposedly a hideout of Al Capone. The history helps make the ambiance of this amazing looking place. The portions are enormous. I started with the french onion soup which was mediocre. The rosemary pork was well cooked and was tasty. I also choose the potato medley which was crispy and salty. Which was a great compliment to the pork. I was so full half way through that there was no room for dessert, maybe next time. While the food was in general good, particularly the salads (BLT bib fantastic), the atmosphere left so much to be desired that we left disappointed. The building is gorgeous and the downstairs rooms are decently finished. However we were put upstairs where barely a moment's thought seemed to have been put to ambience. Overlapping burgundy vinyl tablecloths, salt and pepper shakers straight from the grocery aisle, canvas wine bottle artwork that looked like it came from TJ Maxx and a light fixture from Home Depot. In a building with such history, the addition of some thoughtful lighting (fixtures reminiscent of the 1930s, candles in crystal like votives), white tablecloths, and simple silver-plate table accessories would have made a world of difference. For a building with so much apparent history, there was not a single historical mention on the menu. We would have loved to sit outside but on the night we visited the tacky plastic patio furniture was stacked or leaned against the tables. Service was competent but more suitable for a diner than a fancy $30+ entree establishment. Green beans on the other hand were fantastic and value for kids meal ($10 for a full size salad and plate of pasta) was great. NY Strip was tasty, steak Diane over seasoned and swimming in sauce that disguised the flavor of the meat. read more

I had heard about this place for several years, but we live an hour and a half away and only pass through en route to Nashville. We generally make that trip earlier in the day, so it has never worked-out to stop. This trip was different and when thinking of places to eat dinner, only High Point Restaurant came to mind. Lucky for us, they had room for two at the early dinner time of 6pm. In the event you didn't know, the restaurant is located in what is purported to be a home that was financed by Al Capone (either for a mistress, business manager or both). Who knows the validity of the claim, but it makes for a great story. The home has been completely restored and the atmosphere was pretty cool. The menu is quite extensive, but not to the point that they are trying to offer something for everyone. We started with sesame crusted duck. It was too rare for my wife, but I thought it was great. The duck was complimented by fried ginger on argula. They brought delicious (homemade) rolls with butter and even my wife (who is not a big bread eater) opted for seconds. I ordered lobster bisque soup and my wife ordered the house salad (ome of five options) with a pineapple honey mustard dressing. She loved the dressing. While I really had to look to find the lobster (very little) in the soup, it had great flavor. I ordered a filet with truffle fries and my wife ordered grilled shrimp Charleston. My steak was very good and the truffle fries were great! (I wouldn't have typically ordered fries, but when they include the word "truffle", it's hard for me to turn away). I was, however, concerned about my wife ordering shrimp so far inland. My concerns were unwarranted. She loved it. Next were the grits. Again, I was concerned because my wife makes homemade (stone ground yellow corn organic) and nearly none others compare for her. She liked them so much that she told the server to compliment the chef! (I don't think I've ever heard my wife compliment the chef). Lastly, we ordered creme brulee. This is our go-to dessert when on the menu. Some places just flat mess-up a creme brulee. High Point did not disappoint here, either. I don't think we'll make a special trip to come again in the near future (a bit far from home for dinner), but we'll definitely stop here again, if/when our schedule allows, en route to Nashville. read more

i almost skipped the High Point because the negative reviews about too big a menu struck a cord. Bottom line: they're wrong! My wife and i had a fabulous experience at the High Point. The building is fascinating and well updated to its modern use. Despite the Al Capone connection, there is only a very subtle attempt to capitalize on this history. This is no tourist trap; its obviously run by committed restauranteurs whose goal is to provide a fine dining experience, a real surprise in a town that on the surface appears to be the typical small southern motel strip that masquerades as a town. Of course that's not true of Monteagle which sports the sophisticated rusticity of the Monteagle Assembly and is down the road from Sewanee, one of the best small liberal arts colleges in the U. S. Appearances can be deceiving, but not in the case of the High Point, where the food was every bit as extraordinary as the setting. Since the night was warm we chose to sit outside on the patio, where we were serenaded by very small but very loud frogs: great fun indeed. Service was attentive and friendly, but not obtrusive, it seemed like our waitress was always there at just the right moment. Our meals started with a Chattanooga Whiskey Sour, which was one of the best I have ever tasted. We choose the Duck Soup special and a Blueberry Summer Salad, both of which were exquisite. For our main course we split a Maker's Mark Steak, which would have been too much food if we hadn't split it. The main course came with a choice of vegetables: we chose the smashed potatoes which were fabulous and the medley of fried potatoes which were interesting and tasty as well. Oh and don't forget the rolls, which were so good that we secreted one away for breakfast. One very thoughtful feature of the menu was the ability to substitute the full spectrum of soups, salads and vegetables for the recommended choices at no extra charge. Overall this was a great experience and by itself would justify the 300 miles we drove to get to Monteagle. If you haven't been to the South Cumberland area don't fail to head out on some of the fantastic trails in the area, such as Fiery Gizzard or Stone Door and don't miss the Dutch Maid Bakery in Tracy City. A few miles up an down the beautiful hills and you'll work up a great appetite to enjoy the High Point that much more. read more

Stopped here on our way to Nashville. I will start with the positives: First, they fit our party of six in without a reservation. We ate on the patio, the ambiance out there was nice. Second, our waitress was very nice and helpful. If I were rating based on the aforementioned, I would give it 4 1/2 stars, unfortunately I have to include the food in my review. Food wasn't terrible, it just wasn't that great. I felt the quality of ingredients was poor.I ordered Brie en Croute, which was very good. Winter Salad was ok and my Filet Oscar style was probably one of the toughest steaks I have had. It was cooked medium rare so it wasn't over-cooked. It was obviously a low quality piece of meat. I think that's why they serve it smothered in Hollandaise sauce. I ordered the sauce on the side, so the tough meat was very obvious. My asparagus wasn't prepared well either. It didn't have an ounce of oil on it, so it was just warmed in the oven, making it very dry and bland. I tried my friend's truffle fries and they were a big, soggy disappointment. I don't mind spending what we spent on a great quality meal, but this food was definitely over-priced. My advise would be to keep on driving to Nashville or Chattanooga for dinner. read more

This is one of our "special places," and has been for years. Fine dining in a beautiful old house, and it's just far enough away from our hometown of Franklin that you feel like you've really been somewhere... know what I mean? We have visited many, many times and enjoyed terrific appetizers, especially the lobster bisque, exceptionally good salads, delicious steaks and seafood, and our personal favorite creme brulee anywhere. We've never been disappointed. I will say our last trip a few weeks ago the lobster bisque was not the same recipe I remember, had significantly more cheese and no actual lobster that I could detect. Or maybe I'm spoiled after our trip this past summer to Maine, and my memories are now clouded... still good. Definitely plan a visit, you won't be sorry.
