Had looked forward to returning to Sewanee/Monteagle for a couple years, and one of the first things I did planning the trip was give a call to High Point for a reservation. Unfortunately it was not the same caliber as our initial visit. Wife liked her dirty martini ok. My sazerac was too sweet and a bit hard to get through. The by the glass wine was a small and not particularly interesting selection. Fried lobster appetizer really had a much too heavy coating that overwhelmed the delicate lobster flavor. Still hard to pass on a fried lobster app though. The steaks didn't have that great grill flavor we remembered. My thin cut ribeye was overcooked as well. Though my side of fries were fabulous and the clear highlight of the evening. helpful hint - ask for no truffle oil; nasty stuff, I still can't understand why if shows up on so many menus. The worst part of the evening, and probably the thing that most made us think no on another return visit, was the party upstairs. It involved a lot of very young, very loud, screaming children. I have no doubt that it was a family gathering, but it struck any pleasure from dining in a cool historical space. We started w Nola shrimp - Cajun flavor was great, buttery, goodness. They brought out complimentary bread and shared the specials of the night with us. The roll and butter were warm and delicious. This place has been in my bucket list since I moved to Middle Tennessee and it did not disappoint! I love how there's a rich history (building supposedly financed by Al Capone), and the outside and inside ambiance are beautiful and elegant! We had to wait a bit for our reservation, but the hostess was very accommodating and gave us some water while we waited. Plus, we weren't in a rush! Come to this restaurant hungry, because they give you a lot of food, but we weren't complaining! We started with the Caesar salad and the lobster bisque. The lobster bisque was incredible, creamy, and rich. I ordered the filet mignon with Parmesan truffle fries and my boyfriend got a special that night which was the chicken madeira. My steak was cooked perfectly and melted in my mouth. The mushroom wine sauce that came with it was delicious! The chicken madeira was also delicious, with a cream wine sauce to top it off. We then shared the molten chocolate lava cake which was to die for! It came with some delicious vanilla ice cream which in my opinion is a must with molten chocolate cake! Our waitress was super busy, but did a great job waiting all of the tables. She was so sweet and was a really hard worker. We've eaten at High Point several times. Had dinner there Friday evening. We continue to love this restaurant. We started with the New Orleans shrimp appetizer. Delicious. For entrées, my wife had the grilled salmon, and I had the New York strip and lobster tail. Entrées come with salad and potato. The Caesar salads were excellent. The basket of bread is a nice touch. I did not want to write this review. I have enjoyed an occasional visit to this restaurant for a number of years, but my last two visits this year have been disappointing. Two visits ago I was disappointed in the over cooking of my rib eye - which should be one of the most consistent of basic food prepared. I had asked for medium rare as usual, expecting the same quality I usually get. It was overcooked to the point of tasteless. This last visit. They had a special on Ahi Tuna, a favorite of mine. I had to try. Instead of pink and firm, with just a touch of heat in the edges, it was a grayish off-pink, with a hard and over spiced crust. It was obviously old and apparently pre-cooked. My wife had a special brussels sprout vegetable with the sprouts over cooked the apparently steam trayed. Once I can forgive, especially after many good visits, but twice - it's time to give this place a rest. read more

Went here tonight to celebrate our anniversary. They knew in advance it was a special night and never acknowledged it. Ordered the oysters and they came out with a strange gravy on them and were the size of a dime. Also ordered the bacon which was tasty but cold. Ordered the filet Oscar with fried potatoes. It was COLD and the potatoes were something you would get at a breakfast buffet. My husband got the shrimp over grits with truffle fries. Again , cold and no truffle flavor at all. Definitely need reservations to get in for dinner, so make sure to plan ahead. The food was pretty good. Our table all had a different item and they were all pretty good. I've had better cuts of filet mignon but this one was a 5/10. The Caesar salad was also ok. Too much dressing but still good. Truffle fries were 10/10! Our server was great though. Gave great recommendations for appetizers and those didn't disappoint at all!! My first time trying duck and I absolutely loved it! Especially in the ponzu sauce! My husband and I are visiting for a concert at the Caverns. The atmosphere was great and our service was good and fast! The actual food itself was not all that great for the price. I think if the food were more affordable it would have gotten a better review, but for the cost it was subpar. We started with the sesame duck appetizer, which was good. My husband got the lobster bisque, which lacked flavor. My BLT salad was very good. We then each got the Ribeyes and my side was the potato medley and my husband's were the cheesy grits. This restaurant has been saved in my Yelp! folder since we moved to Tennessee in 2022. We were recently gifted a gift card and called in for a reservation. The exterior is pretty and upon entering you definitely get the feel you are going back in time a bit. We arrived a little early but we're immediately led upstairs to our table. The restaurant appears to be a handful of little rooms (like if you were in someone's house). Our server was very welcoming and informative. We ordered our drinks (I had the margarita and my husband had a double Crown) which arrived just after we ordered our appetizer of fried green tomatoes. I have to say we were a bit disappointed with our appetizer, the exterior was crispy but overall we found them to be very bland even with the pimento boursin cheese that came with it. For our entree we decided to share the black and blue ribeye with brussel sprouts and the house salad. Our salads were delicious besides my husband complaining about not enough dressing but I thought it was fine. We ordered our steak rare and good thing because it arrived medium rare. The blue cheese butter was good but didn't really taste like blue cheese. The steak was good but not amazing but the brussel sprouts were as was the dinner rolls. We ordered the key lime pie to go and I had a bite when we got home. The graham cracker crust was a bit crumbly but good none the less. High Point came highly recommended by one of my best friends. So when I tried to book a reservation several days prior, I was told there were none but I could keep calling to see if there were cancellations. I tried every day up to the day of my arrival to no avail. Eventually I was going to eat at Papa Ron's but after that little fiasco (you can find my review there), I was frantically looking for a good place to eat that was still open at about 8:15 PM on a Friday. I called High Point in desperation and pathetically asked if I could place a to-go order. The lady asked for how many and I said 2. She said sure and the stars aligned and I got my High Point meal, but not in the way I expected. Between me and my lady, we ordered the Oysters Rockefeller as an appetizer, her the ribeye with Caesar salad, and fried heirloom potatoes, me the NY Strip and Lobster Tail, Caesar salad, baked potato, and finally the bananas foster for dessert. We were told it would be about 35 minutes until it was ready. I showed up about 10 minutes early. The establishment is fairly large and has history with THE Al Capone, which is cool. I was quite underdressed (workout clothes) and didn't want to clash with the other patrons... After all there is a dress code. I found my way to the back/side entrance designated for the handicapped and saw it was an office/storage/prep area right in front of the kitchen. I mentioned I was there to pickup a to-go order. Everyone was so nice and while waiting, I was told I could sit in this giant recliner chair. I was told by one of the ladies doing reservations that they were currently booked 2 weeks out. However walk-ins were welcome on non-peak days. My food was ready 15 minutes later. I was told by one of the girls who seemed to be in charge of bagging my food that they messed up the oysters and they had to remake it. I was offered a free dessert for their error. Not wanting to be picky, I opted for the key lime pie. Upon getting back to my rental, I plated everything. Luckily we were only 5 minutes away, so everything was still warm. The Oysters Rockefeller were not the same that I'm used to, as these had hollandaise sauce on them. Regardless, they were still good. The hollandaise gave them a creamy flavor. They were topped with spinach and parmesan. Now here's a tip (pointed out to me by my girlfriend). If you like lobster, go for the steak and lobster. A two tail lobster dinner is $54.95. A single tail lobster dinner is $42.95. I initially wanted just the NY Strip ($44.95). The steak and lobster entree has a "downgrade" option to get a NY Strip over filet for $2 cheaper ($57.95). These weren't sample sizes either. I got a full-sized NY Strip and a full-sized lobster tail. That's a bargain and the best of both worlds. The steak was delicious. Cooked to medium rare just like I wanted and topped with butter that was fully melted by the time I got back to my rental. It needed nothing else, no salt or pepper. The perfect ratio of savory beef, fats from the butter and steak, and seasoning. The lobster tail was huge and meaty. It came with a ramekin of clarified butter and grilled lemon. The Caesar salad was really good as well. The dressing was one of the best I've had and I didn't see a single piece of wilted lettuce. It came with shredded parmesan and a fresh lemon wedge in a mesh bag. The baked potato also was good sized and came loaded with butter, sour cream, bacon, cheddar, and chives. The Bananas Foster was the icing on the cake. Cooked bananas, still firm, bathing in a butter and cinnamon blend with some of the richest vanilla ice cream I've ever had. I never got to the key lime pie because I was so full. High Point definitely didn't disappoint. I'm sure dining there would have been a fantastic experience but the to-go experience was excellent. The friendliness/service of the staff and the quality of the food is top notch. I'll be sure to return the next time I'm in the area and I'll be sure to make reservations in advance. I wanted to love this place. The quaint building and beautiful outdoor patio... but the food and cocktails just fell short. I ordered the Cosmopolitan and the Sazerac. Both fell short. They were also watered down and you couldn't taste the liquor. It was odd. I've never had either of those cocktails as a more mixed drink and watered down? The fried green tomatoes weren't bad but they were messy and the breading fell apart. The lobster bisque tasted like heavy cream. So, I gave it to my mother. The Harvest salad was heavy on the bibb Lettuce but barely had three Pecans and other toppings. For the entrees, we ordered Blackberry Duck. Which, was good. I enjoyed the blackberry puree. The baked potato was also not cooked through (as the fries that were more like potato wedges). We also ordered the Blackened salmon with lump crab and hollandaise sauce with truffle fries. If you know me, I'm always looking for the best truffle fries and it's a real bummer when a spot doesn't offer actusl truffle fries. The truffle fries were potato wedges that remained undercooked and without a flavor of truffle oil. I took one small bite and left the rest. Even with extra truffle oil to pour on top, thwy just did not taste consumable. The worst part was the blackened salmon. It was smothered and COVERED in Hollandaise sauce. Which, was so salty that I took one bite, spit it out and left the rest. My mother tried a bite and did the same. So, I paid for an entree that we threw away. Which, was a bummer considering it cost $40. The locals behind us were talking about what to order and recommended dishes to their guests. They brought up most of what we ordered and how to not get it. Then, they recommended the duck. Which, I agree. It was good. Our first time in Monteagle. We stopped in for dinner with my spouse on a Tuesday night. We were silly for thinking we wouldn't need reservations, but thankfully they were able to squeeze us in fairly quickly. From the moment we were seated our server, Victoria, was kind, helpful, and quite funny honestly. She managed to sway us and another table into ordering the heavenly chocolate lava cake dessert without saying a word. She let the dessert do the talking. Even with full bellies, we all but licked the plate clean. It was divine. We started with the New Orleans Shrimp and Victoria was thoughtful enough to bring extra bread to soak up any remaining sauce. Im so glad she did because it was too good not to finish! I had the steak Dianne and chefs choice side of roasted vegetables. I'm not much of a steak eater but would definitely order this time and time again. It was delicious! Stood in the hostess area over 10 minutes before being acknowledged, along with 8 other guests. Many servers passed by without a word except to ask us to move out of their way. After finally being sat we waited another ten minutes for a server to appear. Then another 15 to bring our wine, you get the idea. Very disappointed with the caeser salad (canola oil, definitely not home made) and the lobster bisque (tasted like came from a condensed can). Husband's duck appetizer was decent. My Steak Diane truly tasted like airplane food. Meat way over-cooked, sauce was like a basic brown frozen dinner gravy, not a fresh sherry-cream sauce. Server made no attempt to inquire why we hardly ate anything, nor took anything home, she's obviously used to it. WAY over-priced and highly disappointing experience.
