Second time here and you can't go wrong with any food. First time I had a filet and it was cooked perfectly and delicious! This time I had the seared ahi tuna black and white and the husband had the duck. Both were cooked perfectly and seasoned to perfection. Cocktails are fabulous! Service is always too notch. The house the restaurant occupies claims a tie to Al Capone, however, it is the house site, not that house. We did look up trivia about Capone while we dined. It doesn't get any better than this! Beautiful setting, a building with a remarkable and intriguing history, outstanding service, and food prepared to perfection. Our server and the kitchen staff were all over my wife's IBS dietary restrictions, prepared her NY strip with just a little salt and pepper in lieu of their customary steak seasoning that has onion or garlic powder, then prepared a side of roasted heirloom potatoes though gave us the option of washing and cooking a regular baking potato to remove the seasoning rubbed on it. Her steak and potatoes were done just right and were delicious, as was my Salmon Imperial, cooked to ideal flakiness and topped with grilled shrimp, crabmeat, and a very tasty beurre blanc sauce. My side was the veggie of the day, a remarkable African medley from the chef of beans, purple peas, okra, tomatoes, and onions. Wow! But as good as all that was, the BLT Bibb salad was the showstopper: presented to look like an entire head of Bibb lettuce with fresh bacon bits, cherry tomatoes, roquefort, and ranch dressing. I can still taste it 3 days later! We enjoyed a very nice California red blend with our food. Dinner for two with bottle of wine was $150 before tip. Wow so much potential. 1st let's talk ambiance beautiful setting well maintained. The weirdest thing was how beautiful everything was but to get to the patio we walked through the employees break room where the servers station was as well. Also this was where the chefs dog hung out. Now the dog was a real high light so well trained and behaved. Still weird. Just past that was the very impressive chefs station which had a great bar that could have been used for patrons to eat and watch the chef in action but no such luck. Moving on to good. We had the bacon slab perfect cook, presentation, well balanced flavor. Lobster bisque one of our top 4 which is really damn good. Bread was good. Entrees ribeye with baked potato was perfect cooked and taste to perfection. Gorgonzola and Steak Alfredo could not eat. Steak was cooked perfectly but the Alfredo sauce was horrible so bad even though I am a 5 star chef I couldn't believe it I had to ask my husband to taste it. He said same thing tasted store bought and so much balsamic drizzle it was super sweet. I sent it back refused a refund and told waitresses no big deal it's his interpretation. My hubby and I went for a weekend anniversary getaway to Monteagle and this place was highly recommended by all we knew. I made sure to get a reservation and thank goodness for that. It was packed and even though it's a big place, it was very busy and active. Our waitress was very attentive and the food was all absolutely wonderful. The salads were SO fresh! My husband said his ribeye was cooked perfectly and he ate EVERY bite. We had hoped to have dessert but there was no room after appetizers, salad, bread and entree. This beautiful restaurant is located in a 1920's mansion that was supposedly financed by Al Capone. Legend has it that you could see John Dillinger and Al Capone playing cards on the front porch. My husband and I had heard that this was not only a beautiful place but also a restaurant with excellent food. We initially shared a cocktail, the Sewanee Purple, which was similar to a Long Island Iced Tea without the tea. We also ordered an appetizer, the Brie En Croute, which is baked brie in a puff pastry with a sweet port wine reduction and grapes. It was delicious especially with the warm bread. For my main course, I ordered the 6 ounce filet. It came with a side as well as soup or salad. I picked aspargus with Hollandaise sauce and the fall harvest salad. Everything was so delicious!! On the fall harvest salad, there was bibb lettuce, brie, pears, toasted pecans with a warm honey vinaigrette on the side. Also, the service was incredible. I need to take a moment to talk some more about the house. It was so beautiful. I definitely felt like I had stepped back in time. Apparently an institution, but good luck finding any locals eating there. I spied at least 15 other states' plates in the parking lot, including ours. Regardless, it's a charming place with history (Al Capone! Prohibition! Old timey restrooms with couches and perfume!) and the food is just fine. Our server (who was lovely and, despite what other reviews indicated, was fully masked the entire time) was a delight and we were hungry and ordered a LOT of food. Cajun shrimp appetizer - very good, plump shrimp in a delightful spice that was reminiscent of Bouchon's mussels but not remotely cajun to my taste. The bread that came with was good, too. Bread and butter - it comes with the mains. They're Sister Schubert rolls. Salads - I got the BLT (holy gorgonzola overload!) and my guy got the berry one (which he said was a tad too sweet). Low points of the meal, honestly, and I had a few questionable pieces of lettuce which I don't expect at a nicer restaurant. (Don't get me started on the dirt I found on the lettuce, either.) Steak Diane - Better half got this. I tried some of the sauce (very good!) and he marveled over it and the accompanying asparagus--with hollandaise, of course, because why not. Unknown steak - I honestly don't remember, meaning it wasn't remarkable. It was well cooked, I remember that, and the baked potato was fine. Dessert, because of course we did - I got the grilled pound cake which was a delight, though the sauce seemed a bit overkill. My man got the bananas foster which was ridiculously huge (like 4 cut up bananas?) and deemed it delightful. Notes: Make a reservation. Dress halfway decently (I'm glad I looked at pics and didn't throw on leggings and a shirt). Parking is a nightmare, watch out for people who can't deal with reverse. It's not a quick meal, not is it meant to be, so be prepared for 1.5-2 hours for your meal, even if you skip apps/dessert. read more

Our second choice for our evening meal was first rate! It was our first visit after not being able to get service at another restaurant. We showed up about 1/2 hr after opening and they had had a cancellation, great for us! The lobster bisque and fresh bread were a wonderful, flavorful start. I had grilled shrimp and savory, cheesy grits with roasted bok choy and radishes. My husband enjoyed panko-breaded chicken topped with shrimp and lobster bisque. The service was wonderful! Oh wow, how wonderful! Well this just fits right in with everything else i have experienced in these beautiful mountains so far. The food is absolutely marvelous, fish, meat, greens... it does not matter what you choose these chefs got it all! Those fries.... oh my, i could not stop eating them! My stake was cooked to perfection, and wait! Don't forget the Lobster bisque we started with, that was fab as well. Somehow we found a space for dessert, I'm not saying we ate it all.. but that grilled sponge cake was heavenly it was standing there in a caramel sauce that you didn't wanna take your spoon out of. We also tried the chocolate lava cake and the flambé bananas. Honestly it does not matter what you take it is all so very tasty. Desserts are big enough for 2-3 people but we just had to try it all! Only disappointment is coffee. The say the have espresso but... no. Maybe Keurig espresso? Our waitress was wonderful;, very attentive and hey girl that sweet southern accent will take you anywhere. Historic mansion built by Al Capone for his mistress. It was his half way resting stop from Chicago to Miami. Women, liquor and gangsters! My kind of history! Stones extending from the corner rock work made built in ladders from the top floor in case they needed to make a quick get away out back. Original floors, windows, woodwork and stonework makes the whole experience feel strange. Leaves you wondering what you would hear if these walls could talk. Stairway to the upstairs dining is extremely narrow. Those people were tiny back then! Ambiance and cool factor, 5 stars! Our food was good but not what you expect for the price. My Makers Mark Steak( Ribeye) was well cooked but very under seasoned. Entree comes with your choice of soup or salad and all soups and salads are available for your choice. That helped to take the sting out of the menu $ sticker shock. Wife had Capone's seafood platter. It had lobster, grilled salmon, coconut fried shrimp and bacon wrapped scallops. I tried them and they were dead on perfection as far as the cooking but again, needed a dash of salt. Desert was the molten lava cake and ice cream...that was fantastic! Our server was 5 stars all the way. She was very friendly, knowledgeable about the menu as well as the history of the home. She was one of those servers who has a natural instinct for perfect timing which is much appreciated. Actually, the entire staff was extremely friendly. Really enjoyed talking to the hostess as I waited for friends to arrive. We chatted about how cool the place was to work and the history of the homes past. Would I come back? Absolutely!! The patio was closed during our visit, which is a shame. It was very nice. Next time will be late spring or fall so that we can set out side enjoy the beautiful surroundings and sit right where Al Capone and John Dillinger sat to play cards! We were in the area for the weekend and had dinner with some friends at High Point Restaurant. The restaurant is really charming and traditional. We were seated in what I imagine was a former patio or enclosed porch - a room right off the entrance with just our table for 6 inside - very intimate and quiet and private! (We had a reservation, and I'm not sure if we requested this table specifically). The menu is also traditional. I had never had Steak Diane (a really retro dish), so I had to have it. The dish is two filet mignon medallions (cooked exactly to medium rare per my preference) flambeed in brandy with mushrooms in a great rich sauce. It was delicious. All of the "High Point Features" (any entrees that aren't pasta dishes) come with soup or salad, choice of vegetable side, and bread. This is a crazy amount of food. Our little party didn't even consider appetizers or desserts (but we did try a few drinks and have some wine) for that reason. I had the Caesar salad and cheese grits with my Steak Diane (I just love saying that). Everything was good. I would say that our party wasn't super pleased with the drinks but very pleased with the food (some of us ordered steak, some pasta, and some duck). (The wine we ordered was fine, but I think the cocktails were a bit underwhelming - in particular, I remember than an old fashioned came to the table bright red. We guessed they had used grenadine in it, which is obviously not classic or traditional to how an old fashioned would be made. I would say we didn't finish a couple of the drinks we ordered from the menu - safer to go with what you know you like.) The service was good. Overall, the food was good, the atmosphere great, and service good as well. My only qualms about recommending the restaurant are the drinks and the fact that it wasn't very COVID precaution compliant. Lots of patrons were inside not masked (even walking in the front door but also when walking to their table, going to the restroom, etc.), and our waitress who was otherwise very lovely didn't have her mask covering her nose at all the whole evening. So, while it was a good meal overall - I can't recommend it anyone who is being cautious at this time. read more

We have lived in Chattanooga for years now and have heard how great High Point is, but never seem to make the drive (about an hour and it is in Central time, we are Eastern time zone). We went to a Titans game in Nashville and High Point is about the halfway point so we decided to make a reservation. Remember the time zone issue, I always get confused and we arrived an hour early. The staff completely understood and we were seated. Our very knowledgeable server Autumn was bubbly and knew the menu, the bourbon list was missing a few items and I asked if I could just go look. She walked me to the bar and I saw a pour that I would enjoy. My wife ordered a Cosmo (it was made with Rum not Vodka and she was pleasantly surprised). We went with the Fried Lobster tail as an appetizer and it was amazing (I was so excited I forgot to take a picture). We both ordered different salads and we both Chose a Filet. My Wife's was Oscar Style with Crab, asparagus and Béarnaise sauce. I went with a simple Gorgonzola butter, both Steaks came out at exactly the right temperature. I think this was partially Autumn's doing as she asked several questions about how we wanted it cooked before landing on Medium for my wife and Medium Rare for me. The prices seem high but are a good value as every Entrée comes with a choice of Soup or Salad and a choice of side (except pasta dishes). I saw someone with the Lobster Bisque and next time I'm going with that. We already can't wait to return. read more
