I was finally able to make a stop at the Top Gun house (aka High Pie) in Oceanside. It is a cute little house nestled in front of a hotel and right across from the water. It was definitely recognizable from the movie and has a nice outdoor patio seating area. The inside is quite interesting in its decor, it was like Victorian meets top gun aviator. While there were some pictures of the movie, it would have liked to see a picture of the actual scene filmed at the house. On to the pies...I guess I should've read reviews and looked at pictures before because I was thinking of was a whole pie. Instead they are mini pies about 2x2 squares. They are a bit pricey in my opinion ($5 for 1 or $9 for 3). We went with the 3-pack and got the apple, berry and pumpkin. It comes in a cute 3-pack flight and while the crust was nice and flakey and the inside was pretty good, not the best pie I've ever had. I also would have liked to try their POG (passion orange guava) but they were out. Definitely come here for the nostalgia, see part of cinematic history and enjoy the beautiful views of the ocean. read more

I feel the need, the need for speed... I mean pie! I am so happy this place exists. Once a vacation rental, the hotel purchased the Top Gun house (one of the oldest homes in San Diego) and rehabilitated it and made it a tourist attraction. Fitted with the identical Yamaha Kawasaki bike Tom Cruise drove in the first movie, this place has the perfect photo op for your IG or TikTok. Once you go inside on the highway to the danger zone and transported into 1980's Top Gun land with some memorabilia and a great redesign of the interior, which was done by the great Nicolò G. Bini (designer of Cara Delevingne's home). What you have to eat is from the mind of the amazing Chef Tara Lazar, the High-Pie, which is a handheld pie. Two main flavors, cherry and apple. Small, but perfectly flavorful. Get a 3 pack, minimum. You can also try it a'la mode, which is the High-Pie on a stick with ice cream. 100% worth it. Other than the cool looking house and the bike out front, these pies are ridiculously expensive for a small ass square sized ravioli. It only takes two bites. Pie tasted ok, nothing amazing. Tasted like something you can buy out of a freezer aisle and then sprinkle sugar on top. We had these pies for an event for my company. The overall reactions were very mixed. People either loved them or didn't take more than a bite. I was in the latter, but I also grew up with Hubig's, so maybe I'm spoiled. The presentation is cute. But for me, they were overly sweet and much too soft. The Famous High Pie is finally open! This novelty-themed, tourist-targeted establishment is located inside of the remodeled Top Gun House that sits right in front of the Mission Pacific Hotel & Resort. I will admit that I was hoping for more than 3 flavors, but I believe the plan is to start small and grow their selection. I know that they will have seasonal flavors and I really like the concept of having local ingredients. I'm always a fan of a place that "masters" a few items and then rotates specials in. The size & prices are reasonable for it being a tourist-destination and I appreciate that I can place my order, grab some selfies and then take my order to-go and be 3 minutes from the pier/beach. I also appreciate that their pies are made-to-order and still doesn't take too long to make. The service was superb and even for "starting staff" they were VERY helpful and welcoming. They're all dressed in pilot overalls too. Supercool theme! The interior leans heavy into a traditional All-American , vintage sea cottage; exactly what it should. Afterall, it IS modeled after "Charlie's House" from Top Gun. They also have a bangin soundtrack playing 80's alt-rock & rock n' roll hits! Great for tourists visiting Oceanside. The lines really haven't been long and the wait was just a few minutes. The pies were good, but nothing spectacular. If you want a sweet treat after walking the pier it's the perfect spot. Honestly the price and limited options in pies was a little off-putting. Not worth the price for the size but was nice to experience one time. Staff was super friendly. Details in the house were cute as well. Although every sign says pie a la mode... they don't sell them like that anymore. When I asked if they have ice cream they said "only soft serve on the weekends". Pie is ridiculously small, overpriced and greasy? It was oddly soft and crumbly. Apple pie was lacking any flavor. A toaster strudel is better. Asked for Carmel On the side ($2 for a small prefilled packet) but they messed up and gave me chocolate. It is the Hershey's chocolate syrup. One small bag for the price of a whole bottle at the grocery store? I'll pass next time. It's worth just taking pictures but not buying anything from. read more

Came here with my daughter and her friend - who were excited to get pie. We walked in and there were no employees to be found up front. I went around to the pick up area and could see people in the back. I went back to the front and waited again. Then a man walked in and said they're in the back. I walked back to the pick-up area and could see three employees (females) all standing around talking in the back. So from the start it was not a good welcome. I ordered one apple pie and one ice cream. The order came out and I asked for a second spoon. The female employee walked back behind the shutters to the kitchen and she knocked over the very large and dirty fan that was blowing. It fell on the ground and the chunks of dirt from the fan flew off and almost landed in my food at the pick-up counter. Never once did she apologize or even ask if our food was ok. Never once did she acknowledge to me "sorry, is your food ok?" Please train your employees how to greet and work with guests. Also the apple pie wasn't even warmed up and tasted like it had been sitting for awhile. Go for the photos of the location, but have low expectations for the food and service. read more

So, we are huge top gun fans so we had to go here. And while this is the beach house from the original movie it's changed dramatically. It's been restored back to it's original character from the late 1800s. As an archaeologist, I get it. That makes sense. Just don't lean so hard into the Top Gun thing. It was still pretty cool. We're giving this three stars because the tiny hand pies are *OK*, very messy because they have too much powdered sugar, and are stuffed in a little box that they are hard to get out of. read more

What a delightfully quirky place. Kelly McGillis' house in "Top Gun" has turned into a mostly gluten-free hand-pie shop with a smattering of the film's memorabilia. It's worth a visit just to be able to say the above alone. 3 pies for $9 felt reasonable. They're about the equivalent of a pop-tart. There were two of us and we each got different "flights" so got to try the strawberry, blueberry, cherry, and pumpkin. Fillings tasted from a can versus homemade with their sweetness, but was still a nice treat. The pumpkin flavor was the only one that was a bust to us. Also got their Arnold Palmer. Their version is (very) carbonated which gives it an almost sour taste. I didn't care for it, but my husband enjoyed it so to each their own. Top gun pie!! This store is right by the oceanside pier. Original top gun house was a block away from this location. They relocated and remodeled nicely. Clerk at the counter doesn't appear to like her job much, was aggressive when asked what the seasonal flavor was (we don't have one) and when asked for a chocolate dipping sauce (we don't have any dipping sauces). Really cute Top Gun theme house to check out for photo ops! There's even a motorcycle replica out front. The pies are not nearly as bad as everyone described, it's just very small! We have been coming to Oceanside for 30+ years and have a place next to the original location of the top gun house, We were pleased that the house was preserved and that it turned into a hand pie shop... They were out of several options when we went and there is usually a long line to get in. The house renovation was incredible and it's filled with relics from the original Top Gun Movie which is neat and nostalgic! The wait was extremely long 20+ min for 2 hand pies. The pies are good not great, and resemble a hand pie but sugared like a Binet and have the same light fluffy crust and taste like a Binet. The cherry has a nice tartness that works well with the sweet crust and sugar coating The strawberry rubarb is perfect for those with a sweet tooth.mm They have dips for 2$ which gives you about .50 of a topping like you would use on a once ice cream sundae That said we tried carmel and chocolate both very delicious get it if you love sweets It's a great place to go if you enjoy nostalgia but not if you're a foodie looking for an amazing dessert! read more
