John to the Rescue AGAIN! Unfortunately, our AC's refrigerant leak was much worse than we hoped, and it stopped working during the heat wave. It was hard for me and my husband to deal with the heat, but it was so much harder for my dogs. This is my third time using High Performance Heating & Air to repair our central air conditioner in several years. I have no doubt in having John service my AC unit. He is exceptionally bright, knows his craft and very honest in dealing with his customers. He does not try to upsell you on buying new products or additional service. Our AC was not blowing cold air two days ago when the weather was reaching over 100 degrees. I reached out to John the next day and he promised to do the service call first thing the next day. I told John that maybe our AC needed refrigerant because it was not blowing cold air, but John caution me that it could be something else besides refrigerant. He was right, it was a blown fuse after his diagnostic investigations. He also help discovered that we had some air flow blockage and that turns out we had a very dirty air filter. There aren't many tradesmen like John around anymore. Honest, knowledgeable and friendly. I called John about my AC suddenly not blowing cold anymore and he carefully walked me through what could be the issue since he couldn't make it out until tomorrow. I'm a DIYer when I can but I was prepared to pay someone for diagnostics at the very least since I was out of ideas. In the end John was absolutely right, it was the dual capacitor failing on the herm/compressor side. I was able to fix and replace it myself with John's expertise. Highly recommend! After having another tech top off my HVAC coolant, my HVAC line froze. This was when it was 100 degrees out in August. The tech didn't know what was wrong, so I called John at High Performance. I wasn't even a customer yet, but John was diagnosing my issue over the phone and suspected it was lack of air flow. I had John come out and he looked at everything. It turns out the air flow was an issue because there was dirt and plastic bag debris (from previous owner) inside the control unit next to the furnace (happens from not using air filter). This thing could have caught on fire! That whole part of the unit was taken off and cleaned. He also replaced the capacitor. The coolant was also not completely topped off! It has been many months and no issues so far. John is highly knowledgeable and takes pride in his work. I wished I had called John in the first place, which would have saved me money and stress from not knowing if my issues can be fixed or if I need to replace my HVAC! The first storm of the season hit today, and I turned on the heat for the first time in months. After an hour I realized the temperature hadn't changed, the furnace wasn't working. I called John (who fixed my A/C in 2017). He asked a few questions, told me the most likely causes and range of costs, and was able to come by in the afternoon. I watched him do the diagnosis, and his guess was right - there was a failure on the circult board on the 25-year-old furnace. He had the part in stock in his van and was able to replace it. John only does repairs, not installations, so he has no incentive to sell you a new system. Meanwhile, I got an education from him on the problems with newer state-mandated furnace and heat pump technology, and on how to improve air flow. I've known John for many years now. Ten, in fact. During those ten years I have observed a continued effort on John's part to solve any problem set before him cleanly and efficiently. The first tech from a company named Jazz came out and for $59 they basically told that me I had a short circuit (not true) with R22 refrigerant (hard to find) and needed a new unit. We agreed on the date and John was able to check our Unit and discovered that it was low on freon as well as a capacitor that was not the industry standard.
