My furnace failed and I call John at High Performance Heating and Air. I told him the symptoms and the fault and he know immediately what the problem was. When he arrived, he got a new capacitor out of his truck and went up the ladder to where the furnace was. He tested the old capacitor, and sure enough, it was bad. So he replaced it with the one he brought with him. When we turned the power back on and it started right up. The total repair time was about 5 minutes. Starting on Thanksgiving, the fan on our furnace was running continuously. We called John first thing Friday morning and explained the problem. Finding an honest and reliable HVAC technician is nearly impossible, since in my opinion, most in the HVAC service industry are crooks that rip people off by blowing a lot of hot air because they know trade secrets that the average homeowner like this guy (points to self) has no clue about. I really think it's easier to find an honest used car salesman than an honest HVAC technician. Fortunately, Yelp did me a solid when I found John at High Performance Heating & Air. Seriously, he lives up to his 5-star reputation and like LeVar Burton used to say, "but don't take my word for it". Look at all the other reviews and see for yourself. John is a one-man operation and because of his stellar reputation he is a really busy guy. That is why when I initially called him his phone went to voicemail where he had this really detailed message about how unfortunately, he would only be able to assist existing customers at this time... I could have hung up then and there, but his phone message kept going and explained all these things about how the HVAC industry works. After listening to his enlightening information, I simply knew I could not go to anyone else. So what is a desperate guy in the East Bay to do when his A/C stops working and he can't afford to leave his furchild at home alone due to the 100-degree weather? BEG. And, I ain't too proud to beg. I sent him an email hoping for the best and trying to sound as desperate as possible because I was. Knowing that it was a Hail Mary, I clicked send, crossed my fingers, and went to sleep sweaty, hot, and irked. The next day, I received an email response and it was John. I think he felt sorry for me and so we arranged for a time to have a phone conversation. He called me promptly at the allotted time and we discussed what might have happened to my central A/C unit. He predicted that while it could be a Freon leak, he thought it might be a bad capacitor. Then he said he could squeeze me in later in the day. Thank goodness I live on his commute home! John texted me 30 minutes before arrival how he was doing in traffic and showed up at the promised time. He got to work and sure enough, the capacitor in the compressor had failed. He removed the capacitor and said it had lasted 15 years which was not bad. He also replaced my fuses and tested the Freon levels, which were fine as he had predicted. He could have packed up and left there, but then he offered to check my furnace capacitor since he was onsite. Let me stop here and say, most other HVAC technicians would have left, knowing that they might get more business in the future because they would have to come back to replace the other capacitor. Not honest John. He tested the capacitor and said that although it had not failed yet, it was starting to and asked what I wanted to do. I said, put a new one in bossman! On top of that, he noticed that the previous homeowners had not wired the power to the blower properly and had it on a medium-high setting. So, John fixed that. But wait, there's more! He also checked the flame sensor for the furnace and removed the oxidized areas. Now that is called High Performance! Once he finished his work, he told me the price and I was surprised at how reasonable it was. For all his expertise and honesty, I gave him some Pliny the Elder beers and told him that I hoped to never see him again. LOL. I realize John made an exception for me and I am forever grateful because the other option would have been getting a ghastly portable air conditioner to ride out the summer... or building multiple poor man's air conditioners like the one I had been using for a few days. So yes, there is a reason his company is called High Performance and he really deserves 10 stars. And if John sold used cars, I'd buy from him. One things for sure, the A/C in the car would be awesome! High Performance Used Cars?
