If you love poké, you'll LOVE this newly opened hidden gem well secured within the compounds of Camp Pendleton Base so unfortunately only military personnel, government agents and their family and associates will be able to frequent and enjoy this establishment within the same corporate family as Panda Express. It is located on the west side of the new hospital in the same parking lot of McDonald's, Coco's and Panda Express, north of the gas station. According to one of the three female employees closing this evening, this Japanese Grill opened January 17, 2017 at this location and will launch their Grand Opening celebration on April 11, 2017 with prizes to raffle off, free samples and other festivities. My photos reflect the last 15 minutes prior to closing on a Saturday night after St. Patrick's Day so they were down to their last piece of Spam, 4 tempura shrimp, 7 pieces of salmon teriyaki and lots of chicken teriyaki. I didn't understand how to order my food or how their system was so I had to have her put back the teriyaki chicken and salmon she put on my brown rice and salad already in my bowl. With the pressure of people lined up behind me to order, the lady kept saying to pick 2 so I chose those two from that department thinking that I would get to choose the poké I wanted in the next section. Nope. That's not at all how it worked. Here's what you do: STEP 1: Decide between a large or a small bowl. The small bowl comes with 2 Proteins and 4 Toppings. The large with more. STEP 2: Select your base of either Sushi Rice, Salad, or Brown Rice. Similar to its sister restaurant, Panda Express, half and half is possible. STEP 3: Pick the 2 proteins from the vast selection they have of Chicken Teriyaki, Salmon Teriyaki, Shrimp Tempura, Spam, Original Ahi Poké, Sriracha Tuna Poké, Spicy Salmon, Creamy Bay Scallops, Spicy Tuna Poké, Imitation Crab, etc. STEP 4: Select 4 Toppings consisting of: Corn, Ginger, Fried Onion, Seaweed Salad, Dried Seaweed, and Edamame STEP 5: Choose the sauce(s) from Garlic, Spicy Mayo or Teriyaki STEP 6: Pay and ENJOY because you will as I did! I ordered half a bowl of salad, half a bowl of nutritious brown rice, with Sriracha Tuna, Creamy Bay Scallops for my two proteins, topped with Edamame, Seaweed Salad, Dried Seaweed, Fried Onions and sauced with squirts of Spicy Mayo and Garlic. I complimented my meal with a refreshing large Brisk Peach Tea that was really good! You can drink your fill as the fountain drink selection you serve yourself comes with free refills. It took me a long time to narrow down my choices to the two proteins so the server offered toothpick samples for me between the spicy salmon and tuna pokés to help me decide. That was helpful. I was delightfully surprised by the freshness of the seafood complimented with the crunchiness of the seaweed, fried onions and the flavor packed combinations harmoniously playing off each other making my body so happy and healthy! Each bite of the bowl of heavenly goodness took me back to my latest adventure in Hawaii a few months ago when my cousin took me to these amazing poké places we savored and relished. It was that fresh and delicious! I loved what I ordered and can't wait to return. The three female servers greet each customer upon entrance with enthusiastic welcomes that exude confidence knowing that each person that walks into the store is about to enjoy what they are serving! I eat slow enjoying every morsel but they cleaned and closed the eatery down relaxing us with complete sincere reassurance to take our time to enjoy our meal without pressuring us to leave. Since it is a fairly new establishment with a new food concept differing from their other same name restaurants in other cities, they are still working out the kinks before their official grand opening on April 11. I love this place and didn't give it five stars only because there is a learning curve taking time to figure out how their ordering system works. The proteins or entrees need to be labeled or organized better to avoid customer confusion. Also, their business cards or other publications such as printed menus won't be available until April and they've been operating for three months. When I did ask for their address and phone number, it differed from what I found online so my business addition to Yelp for this business may need editing. I came here with my daughter, first time coming, and we got the small bowl which was a little over $7. You have a selection of the kind of rice you want to start with, then a choice of either hot or cold protein. I got the sushi rice, with the teriyaki chicken and crab meat. Then you can pick from another selection of items from which I chose the dried seaweed and edamame. My daughter loved it because she loves sushi and it seems like a sushi roll in a bowl, I thought it was pretty neat. And everything tasted very good and fresh. We enjoy eating here when we are visiting but the customer service has went downhill. The Asian girl with heavy makeup (Sharon?) is not very pleasant. She rushes through everyone in line and makes you feel extremely rushed. Which, BTW, if you don't go there often, or you're ordering for small kids it can be a bit confusing and take a few seconds to figure out what you want. read more

This place gets a bad rap but for the price you can't complain. The small bowl is 2 scoops of protein with tons of choices. They even have dumplings, Kim-chi, and salmon filet available as a protein. The company on base isn't allowed to accept tips which keeps the bill even lower. The only thing that's annoying is you only get 4 toppings before you receive extra charges. Hibachi-San doesn't seem like much when you first walk in, but the smell is what grabs you. I cannot speak much about their brown rice because their white rice is just great. You can't go wrong with their cooked meats (steak, chicken, and salmon). They say their a Hibachi's, but they are totally more of a Poke Restaurant than anything. But they do Poke good. This is hands down probably one of the better places to eat on base. They have a great selection of protiens that are fresh and the rice is cooked very well. That being said the prices are a little high and most poke and boba places off base are a few dollars cheaper. Especially the boba. I would come back here if I'm in the mood to spend a little more. Off base it would get a 3, but it's a 4 on base. It's Poke bowls and not much else. The variety is ok but not great. The meat can be pretty good or mediocre. The scallops in the sauce are really good though. If you don't do poke much you'll love it, if you do it's good enough but not great. Especially since it's on base, and it's rarely busy. read more

The food is great and for the most part the employees are great. However, I feel like they charge extra for everything. Nowhere on their menu does it say that there's a limit on toppings. The menu says you get 2 or 3 proteins. They have the price for extra proteins. I was told that there's a limit of four toppings. If there's going to be a limit just put a sign somewhere, it's not that hard. After the 4th topping they charge $.50. They are very stingy with the toppings and everytime I come in they are out of something. It doesn't matter the time of the day because I have gone at different times. read more

The food here was great and the servings are filling. Well, not today! The new Hispanic woman with heavy eye make up working with the cashier (Naqua) this day split what was left at the bottom of the salad box. I had ordered 2 regular bowls with salad, and she split what would have been a single serving of greens into two regular bowls! I guess she was lazy to go to the fridge and grab a new one. I told her that there should be more greens in it, but she ignored me. We are so disappointed with today's purchase. This was totally not worth $29!!! The serving, as I had expected, was not filling this time and that server did not have good customer service. If you keep this up, you will go downhill and lose customers. Best poki in Oceanside! I love that it's big pieces of seafood in most cases -- not the minced stuff I grew up eating Korean food and love the kimchi shrimp! Also like the crunchy options like shrimp and fried onions. Poki is kind of boring without them. Milk tea has a lot of body and is strong tea -- not watery like the places off base.
