I was lucky to have found this place. Hussein and his team brought my '67 Alfa back to life! Two stars because they quickly removed a small pebble that was making a ghastly noise while driving and no charge. Here is the bad news: I was told that they 'noticed' my rear breaks were kaput and front breaks were at 10% on my Subaru Crosstrek. Note: the breaks were making zero screaching noise when I drove. They quoted me $900 and offered me a driver car, etc. to get the job going. I found a mobile mechanic to do both front and back breaks for less than $300 and he told me that both front and rear breaks were at 40% (I have attached a photo). He told me that the job was suggested prematurely. I understand that mobile mechanics can charge less because they do not have the overhead of a shop. As a woman, I find it very upsetting when I am met with dishonesty and high quotes at a mechanic shop. I do not know if this would have happened if a man were to have walked in. Bummer. read more

The tow truck driver recommended this place when my clutch went out. Going to a mechanic is like calling an electrician, you have to hope that the person is knowledgeable AND honest. I tend to trust too easily I suppose. I picked my car up today after they "fixed" my clutch. Yes, I denied the quote to fix the cracked cylinder valve to the tune of $4000+, but I agreed to the $1000 clutch fix. Let me preface by saying that the car was running rough at idle, but it never died or had trouble starting before I dropped it off. After paying $1040, the car died 4 times in 3 miles to get home, makes an awful screeching sound, AND is difficult to shift. I called the office after it died the 3rd time and he just argued with me and told me it was dead when I dropped it off. Wrong. It still ran and has literally NEVER died on me. Finally, I feel they were very sneaky about the initial quote. The price kept changing and he waited to quote the engine work until after I got the clutch fixed. Had I known I'd spend $1040 for a car I can no longer drive, I would have denied the initial work as well. So, now I will go buy a new car and won't be taking it here to get fixed. EDIT: Mona, your passive aggressive revisionist ramblings only prove my points further. I believe you missed the point completely. An honest person would have disclosed ahead of time that it was going to take many thousands of dollars to make the car drivable and then asked the customer if they were willing and/or able to move forward. NOT do partial work and then say oh by the way...! I'm glad you've lived a pampered lifestyle and never had to budget money or choose between a roof over your head and repairing an old car. After reading your other responses on here, I see that customer service might not be your forte despite your title. You must be family. Furthermore, some of us have jobs during your working hours. I talked to whom I can only assume is your father on the phone, so don't try to act like the only communication was on the key envelope. I was trying to sell my car. The prospective buyer requested a pre-purchase inspection. She found Hi-Tech Auto on Yelp, and they performed the inspection. Within 2 hours, including their lunch break, surprisingly, they discovered $5k worth of necessary repairs on $9k car running like a champion with no codes whatsoever. More than half of the items were hoses, which they claimed "looked good outside" but needed replacement after an internal inspection. They must specialize in hoses, I guess. Specifically, they inspected the turbo intake hose, vacuum hose, upper coolant hose, intercooler to throttle body hose, and transmission coolant hoses. As a car enthusiast for over 30 years, I've never encountered such an "efficient" mechanic. These guys are complete scammers, and I strongly advise against giving them any business. Their license should be revoked for the dishonesty they display, even in pre-purchase inspections. read more

I've taken my car here twice and both times they have been friendly, professional, and fast! I was told that my alternator wasn't charging my car battery so I took it in to get it replaced. Turns out my alternator was fine so they just fixed the loose wiring and replaced my battery instead. I had gone to Hi-Tech a few times to service my Mercedes and never had a bad experience. But, the last time I went to fix a gas leak which was under an extended warranty due to a Mercedes mistake they said they could fix it, and Mercedes would refund me the costs. Well, I can say with 100% certainty that they should've referred me to an official Mercedes repair shop because Mercedes denied their coverage. Now I'm down around $1100, when it would've been 100% free had they not lied. They seem to be super nice people in person, but that's a lot of my time and money to lose. read more

I have been bringing our cars to Hi-Tech Auto for the past 2 years. Particularly, my 2005 4Runner because I love it so much -- it's an indestructible machine when cared for properly. Hi-Tech has performed regular maintenance on it, including changing out the front brake rotors, new brake pads and installing new front CV axles when the boots on the originals blew out (not an easy job). They use high quality parts and their labor is more than fair. Chimis is an honest businessman and his family and crew run a top notch service facility. Hi-Tech is the the trusted shop that I prefer for all of my maintenance and repairs. Poor communication and scare tactics. BEWARE! After having run over a curb, my girlfriend decided to get her suspension checked. They inspected it and determined that all was needed was a to balance the tires. This was great. Except they told me the charge was for balancing, which seemed extreme until I found out it was for the inspection. Poor communication. Our mistake was made was when we decided to have them check out the check engine light. They performed a diagnosis on the car the price of which was not communicated to me. It turned out to be more than I was expecting. Poor communication. After waiting until late that afternoon for a phone call to find out if anything had been performed on the car at all, we had to call them. They explained that the problem turned out to be a leak detection pump. When asked how serious it was, someone at the shop said "Your car could BLOW UP". Why would any respectable shop owner tell a woman that a leak detection sensor could cause your car to explode? Simple.. using scare tactics on women to try and extract more money! They quoted a price of 300 dollars for the part and 200 to install it. Because installing it required special tools and a shade-tree mechanic could not repair it themselves. More scare tactics! I did a quick Google search and found the part online for 75 dollars and found out that installing it is quite simple. Also, they charge 50 dollars for an oil change. Which seems excessive considering most other shops will perform it for 30, but no biggie. read more

Ok. Ready for my saga (spanning November 2012-May 2013)? Long story short, going to Hi-Tech Auto was one of the worst decisions I have ever made. Here goes: In late November, I discovered that my vehicle was having frequent issues with the power steering fluid, so I decided to have it looked over at a local mechanic shop that said it specializes in imports, Hi-Tech Automotive. After an assessment there, they concluded that my power steering rack needed to be replaced. Within a span of three days, one of the managers told me my car was ready to be picked up. After getting in my car to drive off, I immediately noticed that something was wrong. When turning the steering wheel, it was obvious that there was still work to be done because it was extremely loose and made a peculiar sound when turning it from left to right. The manager agreed that this wasn't normal and that it needed to be looked at again, so they kept it in the shop. I waited all day the next day for somebody from Hi-Tech Auto to call as promised, but then only after my own initiative of calling to follow-up, the manager told me that the part was defective and they needed to install another one. A few more days passed, and after they replaced the defective part, I went to go pick up my car. The same issue persisted, however. I spoke with another manager, who happened to be one of the owners. He informed me that it was my car, not the part, that was the issue. I assured him that my car had no issues (sans the power steering rack) prior to the installation, then he proceeded to tell me not to worry about it and that his daughter experienced the same thing. I found this extremely patronizing and unprofessional since this piece of information has nothing to do with specifically identifying what the issues may be and how to resolve them. Regardless, I decided to drive my car for a short amount of time to see if there was perhaps an adjustment period since it was a "new" part. Because I still felt uneasy driving it, I called Hi-Tech Auto again and let the owner know that the issues still persisted. Again, he mentioned his daughter and how it wasn't the part that was the issue. I followed up again and explained that I was uncomfortable taking my car back to their shop due to my prior experiences and that we needed to resolve this somehow. The most they offered was a refund for the part, which is simply unacceptable based on the damages that were incurred on my vehicle and the fact that labor was a big part of the cost. After taking my vehicle to the certified Mercedes-Benz dealership in Austin, the estimate concluded that the power steering raft needed to be replaced (again), as well as the power steering column/power steering shaft and control modules, which cumulatively added up to about $5,300 in repairs from the damages from the original installation at Hi-Tech Auto. Because my vehicle was a somewhat older model, it was unjustifiable to make all of these updates. Above all, the technicians at Mercedes informed me that my vehicle is a safety hazard if all parts are not fixed. Based on the assessments from the technicians at Mercedes, it is clear that because of the workmanship and parts installed from Hi-Tech Auto, it caused significant damages to my vehicle. Because of everything, an initial expense of $978.70 ballooned to expenses of over $5,000. After a very long credit card dispute and unwillingness of the owners to fully reimburse me, Hi-Tech Auto ended up "winning" since no refund was issued. Because my car was essentially totaled at this point, I had to trade it in (for close to nothing) at a time when I wasn't anticipating having to incur unnecessary debt by purchasing a new car. I do not doubt the quality service that Hi-Tech Automotive has provided to their other patrons over the past 22 years. I respect that they are a local, family-owned business. In my case, however, this was not the service that I received, which was why I was seeking reimbursement. For these reasons, I highly discourage others to take their vehicles to Hi-Tech Auto for any significant work needed. read more

So far I have a 10 year relationship with these guys and I wouldn't take my car to anyone else. They are honest and don't push unnecessary repairs on you. If you are unable to pay your bill in full, they work out a payment plan which is unheard of these days. This works out for me as I don't want to rack up my credit cards AND pay interest on top of that. They even hook you up with a loaner car to use while your car is being repaired. I got my car towed to hi-tech to have the fuel pump repaired. I told them what was wrong with the car, and they offered me free diagnosis since it definitely was the fuel pump. they fixed it, and in 2 days i got my car back. The following day i had to bring it back for a fuel leak. i told 2 different techs that i had gone through an excessive amount of fuel in the day that i was driving it and i insisted that there had to be a leak. both techs told me they checked for leaks and there was no fuel leaking. Later at a gas station i confirmed my suspicions when fuel began leaking from my gas tank as i was refilling. I called hi-tech and they had it towed to the shop at no cost to me and repaired the gas tank fill neck for free as well. I don't take kindly to clumsy techs. that fuel leak could have caused a fire while i was driving around town. I would reconsider getting any serious work done by hi-tech technicians. I would only consider coming back for a state inspection. read more

I stopped by here recently to have a head light lightbulb replaced and the air pressure checked on my tire, as my regular mechanic is way up north and I didn't have time this week for the drive. I was hoping I could find a good shop in my hood for small stuff so I don't need to trek all the way up north for such small repairs. In a nut shell DONT GO HERE. The mechanic I spoke to told me it would take 1 hour and cost 150$ to replace my light bulb. He also informed me Hi-Tech DOSENT GUARANTEE any of the parts or labor on repairs they perform. I declined the service as my regular mechanic will give me a much better price. HOWEVER I am giving them the ONE STAR rating because they are SHADY AS HELL. I also requested they check the PSI on my tire as I watched. Just to be sure the tire is safe to drive on until I can get it to my mechanic. AS I WATCHED he mechanic took 5 seconds to check the PSI and then walked away saying nothing. I had to then ask him him what it was reading. He strait up lied to my face saying it was at 20 and now its at 35. That's impossible. I know that car repairs are not my area of expertise butone thing I do know that it takes more than 5 seconds to fill a tire from 20 to 35 PSI. They were just trying to figure out a way to scam me. These guys are serious LIARS. If they manage to be this shady about two very minor repairs I can only imagine what a headache getting any serious repair work done on you car is like with these guys... *****SERIOUS BUYER BEWARE read more

This is my second review for Hi-Tech wherein I adjust my rating up from 3 to 5 Stars. Long story short: I purchased a used 2000 Subaru Outback Legacy (128K miles in great shape). It developed an issue with 2 pistons misfiring consistently and a disturbing loss of power in acceleration on cold starts after a few months of moderate road travel. Initially, I brought it over to Rising Sun Auto (exclusively Japanese car repair shop on S. Lamar). They put about $500 bucks worth of work in replacing the distributor cap & sparks, doing valve work, and some PCV fuel line cleaning. All fine and good but didn't solve the issue. Brought it back to R.S. three more times as the same thing kept on happening over a period of the following 3 weeks(!), and without them ever ultimately resolving the problem (mercifully the warranty covered any follow up work on the car). Gave up, understandably, and brought it over to Hi-Tech. Should have done that from the get-go... Chamis (the owner) ran a computer test on it the moment I drove up and instantly had an "Aha! Moment" and knew exactly what was causing the misfires & power loss. Turns out the starter coil was toast. It took Hi-Tech less than 3 hours to get the part, fix the car and have it back up and running good as new for around $300 bucks. Hindsight is 20/20 as they say but the bigger question is how come R.S. couldn't figure out something as fairly straight forward as a starter coil?! Ugh. Lesson learned and I'll continue to use Hi-Tech as my neighborhood car service shop from here on in. Way to go, guys! (p.s. - For all of you early model "Soob" devotees after a little research I discovered that this apparently is a common issue with this make & year Outback so should the same happen to you have them first check the starter coil. In other circumstances the timing belt can lose it's teeth around 100K miles causing the belt to slip resulting in a similar response. The t.b. is a *far* more expensive fix but definitely needs to be addressed as you could easily destroy the engine after only a little driving.) read more

And one more clarification- they asked me to take a seat which would require me hopping over a bit curb and hauling myself up while in a boot to even get to the seat. Would give 0 if I could. Took my car here to get an estimate for someone who damaged my car but was nice enough to leave a note. I went here the first time, and The owner (old guy with grey hair) wrote down the estimate on a business card. The person who left the note asked for an email (which I understand, anyone could have written on the back of that card). Went back, told the owner the situation-- asked for an estimate in an email, and he kept repeating he would write it on another card. We went out to my car again. I had my phone in my hand and I asked him if I could take a picture or something so this person doesn't think I'm lying. The owner of this shop got angry and started yelling at me "no recording!"I said ok that's fine, I am only doing this for someone who doesn't believe me. He resumed writing on the card, I then navigated out of the video screen to respond to a text --and then he yelled at me NO RECORDING and told me to walk inside to take a seat while he continued writing on the card. I am handicapped and it's hard for me to move around so it was incredibly rude that even after I told him I wouldn't record and was texting, he didn't trust me and told me to "take a seat". And all of this was multiple times after I asked for a simple email and explained to him I was trying to just prove I wasn't lying. Don't go here-- trust me, If a body shop is so old fashioned they can't even send emails you don't want to do business with them. Not to mention it stinks inside and the owner is incredibly unprofessional. read more

Had it not been for Hi-Tech, I probably would have been taking the bus, or driving an old beat-up cavalier--or some overpriced junker on its last legs. Here is the deal about Hi-Tech Automotive: They are the best at what they do. What they do: Sell (for the most part) reconditioned titled cars to people who cannot get into a car, and do car repair and body work of just about any kind. I was referred there by a friend who had bought two Volvos from them because my credit was low due to school loans and identity theft. I couldn't get a car anywhere else--well except Dream Cars--and they wanted nearly 14k for a 2001 Ford Explorer back in late October 11 with compounding interest. I had thought I could walk into a dealership and by a used car at low cost but banks won't lend on them, and then the dealership dings your already low credit by hitting every bank possible trying to get you into a high priced tinker toy car for 16k or more. I walked into Hi-Tech drove out in a beautiful gold 2004 Volvo S80 Turbo Sedan. Yes I paid more than the car's blue book, but I only had to put down 1000k and the rest of the 500 dollar down payment was spread out with my car payments for the next three months or so. And unlike the others, the loan was just straightforward simple interest? That's a lot less money than the 2001 Ford Explorer from Dream Cars--monthly and overall price, and with free oil and tune-ups for the duration. To be sure, this wasn't a cheap car. AND it is a reconditioned title with high mileage, as most of their cars are, but Hussein and his family have been doing this for 42 years here in Austin. I think at the same location on Congress across the street from Magnolia Cafe. I wrecked that car. (My first real wreck ever in decades and decades of driving; it was totaled.) But Hi-Tech rolled my downpayment over to a BMW, and I was in another car as soon as the insurance company settled. There have been issues with the BMW, as there are with any older car--and some differences of opinion, as there are between most dealers, garages and customers. But there has also been one big exception: ultimately, and always in the end, Hussein and Hi-Tech Automotive and I have ALWAYS been able to have a candid conversation and an HONEST resolution to circumstances and payments. They even let you do repairs on credit so you can stay on the road, and provide loaner cars while your car is being repaired. What's more, Hussein will show you codes for diagnostics, and walk you through the repair and parts replaced upon completion of a job, explaining it in a way that anyone can understand. There will come a time when my credit will be repaired and I can buy a new or used car at a more preferred interest rate and price, but I have absolutely no reservation recommending Hi-Tech Automotive as THE best place to get a car when you have no options left--or for repairs on any car. They seem to specialize in Chevy Trucks, Volvos, Cadillacs, BMWs, and Mercedes. They care. And they do what they do better than anybody--period. read more

Chemeis has been taking great care of my '04 Honda Civic for 4 years now. It's a family-owned business; I like it that I see the same people over and over again so they get to know you. Anytime I've had an issue (which is rare), they are pleasant and quick to resolve it. They'll rent you a loaner car for $30/day, which is a lot cheaper than relying on Lyft/Uber while my car is in the shop. Chemeis always calls with a report on what he found and what needs doing, plus what it will cost, and asks for confirmed permission before doing anything. He's also flagged things that can be addressed later and don't have to be done now; they make a note in your file to remind you about it when the time comes. They've never been pushy or salesy with me or ever tried to get me to do more than was truly necessary (looking at you, Jiffy Lube). Everyone is friendly and hard-working. The man even has a book written about him! Someone was really impressed with Chemeis' communication skills and how he built his business, so they profiled him in a book. Pretty cool. I went in there for an inspection on my BMW 650i, and they were so friendly. At first, the inspection guy wasnt there but they told me to come back in 40 mins. I was fine with that because I didnt call in first. When I came back the inspection was $18.50, it only took 20 mins and I was done. They were so nice and friendly that they let me use an IPhone charger. I came back an hour later and I needed to get the front Texas drivers license plates drilled on my car. They dropped everything they were doing and did it for FREE. Now, that is great customer service, I trust them and I dont trust ANY car people, I would recommend them to anyone. read more
