Meigs solved a mystery problem I was having with fluorescent lamps in my kitchen. For some reason they were burning out far sooner than they were supposed to. I called Hewlett based upon their reviews on Yelp. Meigs came out looked at the burned out fluorescent lamps and did some investigating. He hypothesized that the original electrician who had wired my lamps gave me the wrong wattage for the bulbs. Meigs disassembled one of the recessed lamp sockets to be absolutely sure. Sure enough, hidden from my view was the wattage. Not only is Meigs on time, courteous, and honest, he is also willing to think a bit harder than any other electrician I know to solve quirky problems, and has the skills to properly implement and verify his solutions! Working with Hewlett Electric was an absolute pleasure and I can definitely say my new house is 100% more beautiful and efficient because of them. I had them do quite a bit of work which including demoing old incandescent and halogen lights and installing all LED. They also took down 2 hideous chandeliers and replaced them with new ones I'd purchased. I have 20 foot ceilings and one chandelier was an enormous piece of track lighting so this was not easily done. They also replaced nearly all of the outlet and switch plate covers because they were painted an aweful color. The crew was always early and very personable to work with. I honestly felt like I could've left my newborn baby (if I had one) with them; that's how much I trusted them. They do get a bit booked up but that is because they are so good at what they do. Hewlett Electric was able to return my call within 1 hour of requesting a quote. What I really appreciated about Hewlett Electric is their honesty and professionalism. They immediately let me know that the job is a bit small for them, which would probably not warrant their cost since they are a bigger shop. In fact Hewlett Electric is a small enough family owned business that cares to be personable to their clients. I asked for online quotes for recessed lightnings installation to a few providers from yelp, and Meighs from Hewlett was the only one who sent me a quick ballpark quote with actual numbers instead of being vague. The quote was great, and the installation was great too! The lights and the dimmer were all installed in a few hours, completed before lunch time. Where do I begin? Let me start by saying that these guys are AMAZING at what they do! We called a few weeks back and they were booked for a while, so we waited until they were available because we saw how reputable they are. Definitely worth the wait! My husband and I are renovating my mother's house, and we needed ALL of the electrics to be checked and/or updated. They arrived Tuesday at 10 am for a consultation and the crew was here same day by 1 pm. Today is Wednesday and they are finishing up. They have done such an amazing job and are extremely nice, funny people. We have a shy, timid dog and a 16 month-old in the house, and neither were bothered by the noise or crowd. They were on time and accurate. I had a weird request for them, which they accommodated perfectly. I got in a little over my head and comfort zone with some 3-way switches being hooked up to a home automation system I'm deploying. Would recommend these guys any time. They came over to install 240V for my electric car. Very professional and very good. They made sure it works, and explained the whole process. Here is the icing in the cake. I called them to fix a problem caused by Dick's antenna who shorted a line , while installing TV. They not only came on 1 hr notice, once I said I had kids. Highly professional! I just moved to the area and didn't know any electricians. I looked on yelp and Hewlett Electric was #1 so I called this morning for some electrical work (replacing outlets to GFI, venting/wiring in the attic). They called back within a minute or two as they were on the other line. Luckily they had a cancellation this morning and were able to send Bryan within an hour. Bryan was extremely professional and respectful of the home, and took the time to explain what he was doing every step of the way. I would highly recommend Hewlett Electric. I started by sending an email to Meigs asking for an estimate. Meigs replied back with a very clear and precise estimated costs for the project I have (it was weeks before we actually got the key to the house). Once I got the key, I contacted Meigs and set up a time for him to come by to take a look and get a more accurate quote. Meigs came by and provided a quote which I agreed to right away. He also scheduled a time for his crew to come and start the work. He estimated the work would take about 4 days. I felt very comfortable with Meigs' approach and sincerity, so I did not even bother trying to get any other quotes from other vendors. The day the crew was scheduled to work, I was not at the house. I got a text message from Meigs in the evening that the crew installed 14 recessed lights on that day. When I went to the house, I was so happy with the work. I finally met the crew on the second day they worked on the project. I'm giving Meigs and Brian a five star review for excellent customer service. I hired a builder to manage a 400 square foot addition to my house. He disappeared and stopped returning calls right before the end of the project, when it was clear that my main electrical service (line) needed to be elevated 3 feet to clear the roof. I ended up calling Meigs (pronounced Maygz) and he came out and gave me a great estimate. These guys work with PG&E and really know how to schedule this kind of work, another contractor told me to expect no electricity overnight while the work was being done. In the end the electrician (Brian) even climbed up on the roof and trimmed my tree back to allow the service line enough clearance. These guys rock ! read more

My estimator arrived on time and did a great job going over every option and cost that was available. In the end their prices for the work not terrible but was quite a bit more than the electrician I ended up using. Since the job involved 15+ recessed lights, 8 ceiling fixtures, 200 Amp panel upgrade, E/V car charger and wiring of a garage plus misc additional work the difference added up to thousands. read more

I contacted Hewlett Electric via their website (late at night!) and received not only a call back the very next morning, but an email as well! They were very upfront about their availability (booked up for a couple of weeks) but were able to squeeze me in that same week! We had about 10 outlets replaced, and troubleshooting for another 3 that weren't working. They completed all of the repairs in a very timely manner and got everything back in working order. I'm actually writing this review second hand, but was so impressed with the work he did at our house that I had to make sure he got positive plug on Yelp. We've had an electrical problem with one light on a certain circuit since we moved in to our condo. Hit the light switch in the living room, power goes off in the kitchen and you had to reset the fuse. I accidentally hit this switch when turning on another light and all power in our kitchen went out. The whole circuit was gone and we couldn't reset the switch :( My husband found this guy on Yelp, gave him a call (on a Thursday) and the electrician said he couldn't fit us in until Monday. When he realized we'd have no power in our kitchen over the weekend, he dropped what he was doing, came around within an hour, sourced the problem and replaced the electrical doo-dahs right away (I'm not technically minded). My husband is a semiconductor engineer so he can be a real critic of anyone technical, but he was really impressed with this guy and said he did a really great job - he said the electrician new his stuff and was able to debug the problem straight away. Hooray for me! I have lights and power in my kitchen again. Also, for a house call that happened same day, this was very very reasonably priced. When my husband said he got an electrician in straight away I actually cringed when I asked "How much did that cost?" but he was really inexpensive (as house call electricians go) and just did a really really good job. When I first called Meigs, he said they were fully booked for a couple of weeks, but then as soon as another job got postponed, he called me and they ended up starting on my project the very next day. I needed several outlets in my new-to-me house grounded, plus I wanted a dedicated circuit for my home theater. In the end, they did all that, plus ran a new circuit for the microwave (which was sharing a breaker with half the house, they found), fixed a bunch of mis-wired outlets and light switches, and pulled some low-voltage cables through the walls for networking and cable TV. Tips on Smoke and CO Alarms * California Senate Bill 183 requires the installation of a Carbon Monoxide (CO) detector in rental units and dwellings that are being transferred (sold) by January 1, 2011. It also requires that CO detectors are installed in ALL homes by January 1st, 2013. * Home inspectors will be required to report on the presence or absence of a working Carbon Monoxide detector, just like they report on Smoke Detectors, and water heater strapping. In addition, sellers will be required to disclose the presence or absence of a working Carbon Monoxide detector starting January 1, 2011. * It's recommended that you replace smoke alarms after 10 years * Look for a double sensor (ion + photoelectric) smoke detector. * Lithium smoke detector 9-volt batteries are available at low cost. They should last for five years or so (vs. one for alkaline), so you won't be woken up by the low-battery chirping of your alarm as often. * Get "Smoke in a Can" made by GE (or a similar product). "Smoke in a Can" tells you if your detector actually detects smoke, and will give you great peace of mind. Plus, it's super easy to use! Meigs came over and explained to me that the previous owner had given me an incorrect GFCI outlet floorplan. His minimum charge for trouble shooting is usually $150, but he waived it and gave me his card. "Just call me up next time something really breaks down." Hewlett Electric is a knowledgeable and honest company. I purchased a home recently and right before I moved into my new home, all the outlets in bathroom stopped working. I called several other electricians in San Jose, they all want to charge me a fee to help troubleshoot this problem. Then I was referring to Meigs at Hewlett Electric, he is a very knowledgeable and most important honest electrician in San Jose. He walked me through finding a GFCI circuit in the garage that needed to reset to get all my outlets in the bathroom working. He didn't charge me a dime for helping me found the issue. This is what other electrician need to learn from this company. You can charge your customer $30 or $50 to troubleshoot a very simple issue but then you don't have that customer trust. For something simple that you think you can help the customer out, you should help them like Meigs at Hewlett Electric. You will earn a lifetime trust from a new customer. First off, I have never met Meigs or anyone from Hewlett Electric, nor have I done any business with them at all. That said, I am completely impressed! Let me explain... I had an issue in the island of my kitchen where it had lot power. Not being too comfortable, I checked the breaker and found nother "easy" to fix. I called Hewlett Electric with a detailed voicemail, and Meigs called me back within minutes. He left me a voicemail saying that he was booked way out and couldn't get to me, but recommended someone else that may be able to respond quickly. I moved on to the next guy, but Meigs called back again and asked me to call him because maybe I could fix it myself. I was pretty sure I couldn't and I was busy with other things, so I didn't call back. He called again! He suggested it could need a GFI reset, but I knew that my blown outlet did not have a GFI. He told me to look for another GFI outlet that it may be in series with. I went home, found the other GFI, and it was fixed. I called off the other guy. Meigs cared and took the time to call me 4 times for something he wasn't even going to get business with. Fantastic! When I have a real issue in the future, I know who to go with! read more

I had Hewlett Electric upgrade my breaker panel, wire my attic for overhead lights, add a junction box for an outside spotlight, and add a junction box for an overhead light in my laundry room. I got several quotes and theirs wasn't the cheapest, but it was completely reasonable. Meigs spent almost an hour on the phone with me explaining their approach, what they would need to do, and answering all my questions. Awesome! Bryan, Alex, and Luis showed up on-time both days and were friendly and fun. They teased each other mercilessly while working, which was very funny. They take a lot of pride in their work, so they were happy to answer questions, explain what they were doing, and generally indulge a curious homeowner. I had done some research on upcoming changes in the electrical code, so I discussed this with Bryan. Rather than being annoyed or rolling his eyes, he thought it was great! He went through it all with me and we decided to use quite a few GFCI and DFCI breakers so that my whole system is code-compliant in advance of the new changes without me having to replace a bunch of receptacles. Despite not being sold on the benefits, they also happily installed a Type 2 Surge Protective Device (SPD), a.k.a. whole-house surge protector, in the panel. I also had them re-route a bunch of wiring in the attic that a previous owner had just strewn across the floor. This involved cutting up some of the plywood sub-flooring, routing and stapling the cables, then screwing the plywood back down. They cut it such that they could just put the plywood right back - you can't even tell anything was changed. Bryan even arranged to have a friend take his kids to school so that he could come early on the day that the county inspector was due, in order to install the last few breakers that had to be ordered and double-check that everything was ready to go. The inspection was a breeze! These guys do neat, professional work. There was one little "oopsie" in that the drywall saw poked a small hole in the other side of the wall while they were cutting out to make room for the new panel. They immediately told me what happened, apologized, and plastered the hole. The only complaint I can even come up with is that their final clean-up could have been a bit more careful, but I am really nitpicking here. They vacuumed and cleaned up 95% of the mess, but I did find a few stray bits of drywall, some stripped wire insulation, and a powdering of drywall dust. Not a big deal. I will use these guys in the future for any electrical work I need done. read more

I signed up into Yelp just to write this review. I have rarely been so surprised as I was on the day the Hewlett Electric guy showed up. He clearly stated the cost and the discount I would get, got my approval to go ahead and started checking the breaker box. Within 5 mins he said the fault was with PG&E and I should call them. And this is where the shocker came - he refused to charge me anything as the electrical fault could not be fixed by him. He advised me on how I should state my request to PG&E to get a prompt response and I did as he suggested. Surprise no. 2, ten mins later the PG&E truck shows up. The power gets fixed (Phase B was down). The Hewlett guys shows up at the same time to make sure things are ok. And I did not spend a buck (to my embarrassment)! Their prices were competitive for the amount of work, and even cut me a deal on additional work that I wanted done after the initial bid. So, as being a girl, i need my light and electricity to do my hair, makeup etc... i Yelped electricians in San Jose and came across Hewlett Electric. I called and made an appointment the electrician was able to accommodate my schedule, he was super friendly. When he came to my house he was so nice, mind you I am not an electrician so I don't know diddly squat of why things weren't working. So in about 10 minutes he was able to do fix the outlets and the light in my room. He said don't worry about the charge. Wow, I was so surprised!
