The downstairs restroom outlets at a property we own suddenly stopped working. The bathrooms themselves don't have GFCI outlets, but we tried resetting all the GFCIs we could find in the house with no luck. That's when I started calling around for help. Most places I called were quick to ask what was wrong and immediately quote me a fee just to come out. I was considering one of them until I spoke with Meigs. He was awesome. He told me he offers free quotes over the phone, but he didn't just give me a quote. He actually tried to help me troubleshoot the issue right then and there. He spent about 10 minutes on the phone with me, calmly walking me through step-by-step instructions. He suggested there might be another GFCI hidden somewhere else in the house or even in the garage. The garage hadn't even crossed my mind, but it made sense since the restrooms are closer to that side of the house. Since we don't live at the property, I wasn't there at the time to test it. I told him we'd try it when we were back there later in the week. I must've sounded a little flustered because he kindly said, "When you get there, call me if you need me," offering to walk me through everything again if necessary. Sure enough, when we checked the garage, there it was, a GFCI outlet we hadn't noticed before. We reset it, and everything worked like a charm. There was power again in the restrooms downstairs. Thanks to Meigs, he saved me at least $350 of the visit and solved the issue in 10 minutes over the phone. The outlet that ran our window AC unit suddenly stopped working, right before a big heatwave. Having a toddler and an elderly mom we needed the AC running ASAP. Meigs and his wife Amberlee are absolute professionals and experts when it comes to electrical issues! I had some issues with some outlets in my master bedroom and Meigs was able to come out the next day to troubleshoot and repair. I called yesterday and they were available yesterday within the hour. I felt Meils knew his stuff with 30 years experience he seemed confident and made me feel safe that he knew what he was doing. I had a wall moved and after that the switch was in the wrong place. And one switch didn't do anything. When guest would use the guest bathroom they would search for the light switch. Mostly, I would tell people or show them. Also I'd have a night light on to guide them. My lights would flicker occasionally and when I'd use my hairdryer the lights would flicker. I worried about they didn't hook the wires up right when I had the bathroom remodeled. Apparently all the wires were loose and Miegs had to tighten each one and the white and black wires were crossed. I feel safe now that we won't have a fire. I'm very happy with a job well done. I like that he explained everything he did. The cost wasn't cheap but well worth the assurance of safety. read more

I can't say enough great things about Hewlett. Our family has used them for years, and every time they wrap up I'm sad to see them go. Meigs and Alex not just the best electricians I've ever hired -- they're the best contractors I've ever worked with. Our house is ancient, and the wiring is a mess, and Meigs went out of his way to walk me through every circuit in the house at the end of the job. He relabeled every breaker on our main and sub-panel. Our main panel's got some life left in it, but he's the type of person that says "Here's what to watch for, and I really hope you don't have to call me to replace this, because replacing this would be super expensive." We even have a "mystery switch" in our living room -- 20 years and nobody's been able to figure out what it does. Alex figured it out in about half an hour. Turns out there's a junction box that's buried in our ceiling. I've called Hewlett before for an outlet that was giving me trouble, and Meigs called to give me a few ~$10 DIY suggestions to try on my own before hiring him to come out. Turns out one of his ideas worked perfectly. Hewlett's prices are fair and transparent, and they bill based on the project -- not hourly. If there are any changes that need to be made once they've started on a task and discovered something unexpected, Meigs will make sure we talk through the issue before he moves forward. There are never any surprises when it comes time to write the check. They set expectations for their schedule at the start and end of every day (if it's a multi-day project), and they always show up on time. One day on our last project, Meigs called to say that he hit traffic and was going to arrive ten minutes later than he told us he'd be. My family doesn't even do that. They clean up after themselves very well. I think our house is cleaner when they leave for the day. I've got a sweetheart of a dog, but he likes to bark at strangers until he has a chance to meet them. And so Meigs and his crew took a few minutes at the start of every day and a few again on their lunch to throw a frisbee for my little monster just to get him to settle down. I never thought I'd say this about electricians, but I'm kind of bummed that they've run out of things to do at my house for the time being. I have had Hewlett Electric come out to do work on my house twice now and both times have been completely positive experiences. Meigs is always quick to respond to phone calls and is even willing to give rough quotes/estimates over the phone depending on the complexity job. The first time they came out they completely redid all of the grounding in the house which only took them a few days. They also added 4 or 5 outlets throughout the house and outside. This was nearly a year ago now and I have had no issues at all with that work even though it was quite extensive and they touched literally every outlet in the house. More recently they came to fix a wire that I discovered had been nailed through by a previous owner but was somehow still working! Fire hazard for sure. Meigs and his team came out extremely quickly knowing this and got the issue resolved quickly which I really appreciated. As other reviewers have said, Meigs and his crew are very transparent and are always willing to give an honest opinion even if it means less work for them. The second time they came out I asked for a quote on wiring up some LED light bars in my garage. After it was all said and done they basically just told me it would not be worth the cost even though that probably meant I would not pay them for that work. We found our forever electricians!!! We contacted a bunch of teams for quotes on a ton of work on our '56 build with some seriously outdated electrical. We took a while to get everything going (lag at our end, not theirs), and finally had them come out a couple months later to do some of the originally quoted work and some additional work. Our first experience with Hewlett Electric was 5 years ago when we bought our first home. I called Hewlett Electric to check on a light switch that was hot to the touch and also to replace some under cabinet kitchen lighting. They came out and said they recognized the house and then proceeded to tell me they were the ones that performed some work in the past and because of that they replaced the hot switch (even though they didn't originally install it) and did it free of charge!! They're good people who stand by their work. If he hadn't said anything, I wouldn't have known. But he was super honest and told me - I don't think just anyone would do that. Over the years they installed basement lighting and added lights to closets and pantries. I trust them, their work is excellent and they truly their hardest to be as least invasive as possible. I'm often a do-it-yourself guy, but when it comes to electricity, I don't want to find out the hard way that what I thought was the neutral wire was actually the hot wire. Better to leave it to the pros. I've used Hewlett Electric twice now, once to ground a dozen outlets in my house, and the other time to remove the failed ballast in a closet light fixture and wire it directly for use with LED tubes. Both times, the employees who have come over have been courteous, professional, and have done a great job without leaving a big mess. Meigs Hewlett, the owner, has been very responsive and helpful in helping me understand my options and in scheduling my requests for service. When I left Meigs a voicemail during the most recent service request, he got back to me within an hour and was able to have one of his guys come over two days later. Pricing has always seemed reasonable, given that electrical work isn't cheap. Hewlett Electric also accepts credit cards without charging a fee. So the next time I decide to bling out my house with Tesla coils, or simply just have an outlet rewired, you bet I'll be giving Hewlett Electric another call. read more

Called Hewlett Electric because of the great Yelp reviews. I had called a few other companies with great Yelp reviews, but none of them called me back. Meigs answered the phone right away. He didn't come to my house because I had a very small job and wasn't in his area. He did however recommend a couple of other companies and gave me their names and numbers. My electrical issue was fairly simple, two light switches in our bathroom stopped working at the same time. While I was on the phone with Meigs, he asked if there were any GFCI plugs in the bathroom area (we have 3 of them). He told me to make sure and push in the "reset" button on the plug. Two of the plugs didn't need it, but the third had been tripped. When I pushed the "reset" button the light switches turned back on. I had the privilege of Meigs, Alex, and Amberly working on my newly-purchased house for several days. I spent somewhere in the $11~12k range on their services, but I never ever felt that I was being robbed or cheated. Meigs was transparent about everything he was doing to a fault. Honestly, if you wanted to just babysit him while he was working, he'd tell you exactly what he's doin' the whole time, by which point you'd become an electrician merely by osmosis. All of them are very thorough, and I can attest to their pride as craftmen. Of particular noteworthiness was towards the end of their work, I simply didn't want to get anymore work done; the work they were doing was going far over the budget I had initially anticipated, largely because my house had so many illegal splices and poor handiwork all over the place (Granted, those were in the disclosure document when I bought the house, so perhaps I should have anticipated it a little more). When I told Meigs to just leave the rest of it, as I already had spent the amount you see written above, he took it upon himself to fix up several other things completely free, both because him and Alex are perfectionists, and also because it seemed he didn't want me to perish in a fire. That's essentially an entire day of work that they did and I didn't spend anything for it; they could have left right there. The following day when they didn't show up, it was odd - it's like my roommates all of a sudden stopped coming home. I miss the hilarious banter and overall great, friendly attitudes.
