Happy New Year 2020! I am so thankful to Hewlett Electric! Long story short - Meigs and his team are the best! if you are in need of any electrical services, hire them without any second thoughts. Story - A week before Christmas, our refrigerator stopped working. Initially I thought that it was an electrical issue and so called Meigs (Hewlett Electric had helped with our remodeling multiple times in the past). When I explained my problems to him, he mentioned that he was completely booked for the next month and gave me a couple of references. However, he took the time to talk to me about my problem and tried to diagnose the problem. He told me that it's either an electrical issue or an issue with the refrigerator itself. I called his references and got an appointment for the next evening. The best part was that Meigs called me within half an hour to check if his references responded or not. When I told him that my appointment is not until next day, he suggested I call an appliance repair guy on the same day so that I will know if it is an issue with my refrigerator. I would give him 100 stars just for that follow-up call. I took his suggestion and called an appliance guy and he concluded that my refrigerator had died and its not an electrical issue. They came when they said they would to do the estimate. The estimate was written with a diagram and each service was itemized. They scheduled the work in advance and told me how long it would take. Then the work took exactly how long they estimated it would, they listened to what I wanted, and did beautiful work. Yay!!! They went above and beyond (10+ stars) as well. A 220v dryer switch was installed along with two ceiling lights and can lighting replacements with updated switches. They gave us an estimate of $150 per outlet (since we had a crawlspace), and stuck to that estimate. 3 outlets grounded, $450 total, no extra fees or costs added on at the last minute. They did good work, reasonably quick, and cleaned up afterwards, and left no marks on the floors or walls. Everything looks good as new. My only problem is they showed up early, and I was still in the shower. :( But that's more my fault than theirs, I shouldn't be such a lazy bum. Over the years I have hired several contractors for my home and not sure if it is just bum luck but I have had major issues with nearly all of them. Meigs Hewlett is the first guy that not only took the time to get the job done right, but he also checked back later to make sure my wife and I were completely happy. Not only is he the nicest, most trustworthy guy I have ever worked with, he takes the time to explain everything he plans on doing and why he did it. To give just one example of how strong the customer service is, I had called to ask him a question about some electrical work I did on my own with a switch. He actually stopped by on his way home and looked over my work. He gave some input and let me know that the box I was using in the wall was probably not the best and that i should use a different type. I'm so glad i called him. We had a great experience working with Hewlett Electric. I emailed them on their web-site and heard back from Meigs in about an hour. We discussed our request to have under cabinet LED lighting installed in our kitchen and Meigs gave me a quote over the phone. He even gave a great recommendation on where to purchase the equipment needed for the job. We scheduled a time for Hewlett to come out in a week to do the work. Meigs called me a couple of days later and let me know that they had an opening sooner, which we were able to accommodate. Kurt showed up on time and did a great job with replacing the LED under cabinet lights and wall switch. I worked out a deal with Meigs and Kurt to have them change out a bathroom fan while Kurt was on-site. Kurt was able to handle this last minute request as well. Here is the BEST part...When Kurt was packing up to leave he noticed that our rain gutters in front of our house were over flowing (He was on-site during one of the Winter storms in December '14). Kurt offered to help remove the debris from the gutter and got up on his ladder to pull out the leaves and mud that were the source of the clog. Now THAT is what I call customer service!! We had Hewlett Electric install recessed lighting in our living room and it couldn't have been done any better, from the way they were able to give us the time and information we needed to make a good decision all the way through to the installation. We had spoken to a number of contractors prior to going with Hewlett Electric. In fact, since this company has such wonderful and consistently high reviews on Yelp, it was not difficult to make the decision to go with them. Thankfully, we were not disappointed. Gary and Kurt came out to do the work. Originally, we had a good idea of how many lights we wanted installed and the location for where they would be installed. However, after talking for over 90 minutes about what we wanted, it was clear that our original ideas were not as clear and effective as what Gary and Kurt had suggested. This all happened while I was at work and my wife was home, serving as the project manager. Gary and Kurt suggested to my wife that we should think it over because they wanted my wife and I to be sure of where and what we wanted installed. It was a pretty big job and they wanted us to be comfortable with the decision. Here's where their customer service is so incredible. They told my wife to think about it and they would come back another day after we made a decision. Fearing that they would not get paid for the day because we needed more time for my wife to contact me and for us to make that decision, she told them that she felt bad and that perhaps we should just go with our original idea because we wanted the lights anyhow and she didn't think it was fair to just cancel on them. But what Gary and Kurt said was so uplifting. They told my wife to not worry about whether they got paid, there would be some kind of work that they could still do that day, and that the most important thing was for us to be happy and to make an informed decision. I don't find many businesses that are willing to sacrifice a sale in the short term in order for the customer to feel they made the right decision in the long term. But that's what Gary and Kurt did. Electrical stuff is complicated and not something you want to be doing yourself (unless you really know what you're doing) or trusting to a company because they are the cheapest option... THESE are the guys you want working on your electrical. They have a lot of experience and do a really thorough job while keeping you informed. When we bought our house originally 4 years ago, we had Hewlett re-wire the whole house and ground all the outlets as it was super outdated with cloth wiring or something like that. They did a great job and it's been working well since. So when we wanted to update our house this year with recessed lighting throughout, we called them back up. These guys showed up on time and even finished the job earlier than schedule. They coordinated with the guys who were removing our popcorn ceiling. They billed us $100 less than the quote because they said they had built in $100 in case of an unforeseen issues and there were none. We had them take down 2 ceiling fans, replace another ceiling fan and add about 30 cans throughout the house. You can tell that they love what they do- really friendly and fun group of guys. Our ceilings now look fantastic and the lighting makes the house look so much better. Bonus: you can pay by credit card so I racked up some points/miles too :) read more

I had Megis and Bryan come out to my house to look at some electrical problems I was having. After listening to my description of the problem and entertaining my hunches, Megis and Bryan got to work and tightened a loose wire in my breaker box, replaced a faulty GFI, removed another GFI from a daisy chain of GFIs which was causing the GFI to trip. They also diagnosed a bad irrigation system. They did all of this on the same Saturday I called them. I thought the work was good, and the price reasonable. Megis also stressed to me at the time and in a follow-up phone call that if I had any problems not to hesitate to call. He was very clear to let me know that my satisfaction was important to them and that he would take care of me should I have any further problems. Work: Running cables along the attic and through walls to new rooms. First off, the entire crew is extremely friendly, respectful, and helpful. Not only are they pleasant to deal with, but they are all efficient, punctual, professional, and willing to explain in detail the work they are doing. On top of it all, their pricing is very fair (had a few estimates before choosing Hewlett) and they will recommend the best options to you (whether it brings them business or not, at least in my dealings with them). My experience was a bit unique as I had them come out twice to run the cables into rooms that previously had no outlets, through the attic. The first time they came out and ran the wires cleanly with no hitch. They finished in less then a few hours even though the work was fairly extensive through a small attic and inbetween different walls. But I asked them to use an old wire that I had to save some money, since long wires can be expensive (huge mistake). We tested the televisions and everything worked fine before they left. Within a couple days, I was having some issues with internet. I had Comcast come out and test the wiring in multiple places and found that the cable I had provided could not handle the bandwidth high speed internet needed (felt pretty stupid at this point). I called up Meigs and asked for his advice and how much it would cost to re-run the wire. He gave me the options and told me he would re-run the wire for FREE!!! They came out again within a few days and re-ran the wire within an hour, again cleanly and without any issues. We tested everything a bit more thoroughly this time and found no issues. Now everything works great, and I couldn't be more happy. I highly recommend Hewlett Electric if you are looking for a fair, professional electrician you can trust. Meigs was the first electrician to call me back about replacing the rest of the knob and tube in a house I just purchased. He was very straightforward and explained the process carefully, giving a range of estimates based on what he might or might not find inside the house. He even offered to answer questions from me as I got a few more quotes and was always very responsive by phone. While he was not the cheapest, those phone conversations told me he was the best. Fortunately for me, he was free to do the work on my house before I moved in. Meigs, Alex, and Amberly were professional, conscientious, and just so much fun to be around! We laughed a lot but Meigs also made sure to explain everything he was doing so I knew how the house was wired. He and Alex showed me how to do some basic things so that I could take care of it myself in the future. He was also very transparent with the pricing, explaining what had been done at the end of each day and why the price came out to what it did. It was all in line with what he told me in that first phone call and even coming in lower in some instances where he could safely piggyback off the work of the previous renovation. They are all meticulous with their work by checking things at least two to three times and made sure to leave the house as they found it, being careful not to scratch the floors and to clean up any messes. My tenant had a problem with dimming lights in multiple rooms of the house. I called another company before I called Hewlett, and the other company was extremely rude and wanted to charge me $300 minimum over the phone. Then I called up Hewlett Electric, and Meigs advised me to call up PG&E first and have them come out to determine if the problem was on their end. He told me that a call from PG&E would be free, and that doing so would avoid my being charged some exorbitant fee by an electrician who wouldn't even be able to fix a PG&E problem. I did exactly what Meigs advised, and lo and behold, PG&E determined that a small animal had chomped its way through one of the wires coming into the house. They fixed it up for free, my tenants are happy, and I am thrilled with Hewlett Electric. This is a company that goes out of its way to help customers. Very impressed. read more

I planned to buy a far infrared sauna and the unit required a dedicated 120V 20A outlet. Meigs was not the first electrician to give me a quote and consultation. However, he was the first one to point out that I did not really need any work done. You could also say he was the only person to point that out because I didn't ask for any more quotes. Meigs mentioned that all bathrooms should have a 20A circuit. As long as nothing else was drawing power from any of the outlets of _all_ bathrooms, the sauna usage would be fine. Meigs is personable, honest and fair. Unfortunately, after his advice, I did not have a real job for him. However, if one comes up, I would not hesitate to call Meigs again. read more

I had them come out and replace my breaker panel inside the house, wire up a bunch of can lights in my kitchen and livingroom, and install an EV charger in the garage. Meigs came out to take a look at the projects and give me a quote, he was thorough and very friendly. He didn't try to oversell me on any work, and gave me his opinion when he didn't think certain upgrades were worth the money. I really appreciated his honesty and his detailed quote. Bryan, Alex and Luis showed up for 3 days straight, and were very friendly. We had some complications about where the lights could be placed because of ductwork in the ceiling, and they were all very helpful in weighing the options with me. The first night I arrived home to find 2 can lights installed in one area and one very small hole above the switch, no other mark in the ceiling. I fully expected much more wallboard repair work would have been needed. All of their work was precise, well measured and clean. No complaints at all. They covered all furniture, and swept and vacuumed everything when they were done. I couldn't have asked for more. The EV charger was a difficult job as it needed upgraded wiring and my garage is detached. The work they did there was completely functional and beautiful.
