Just went to Hersh's tonight for dinner. We tried the meatballs, prosciutto balls, and pizza with homemade sausage. All were fantastic. To top it off, $2.50 beers on the drink menu. One of them a scotch ale from Oskar Blues. Well played Hersh's, well played. We will be back very soon. read more

We've been here like 3 times in the past month now. It's tucked away in a quiet part of SoBo near Riverside park, but apparently you can park at the Federation of the Blind. The food is always excellent, and yes the pizza comes uncut but you can request that they cut it when you order if you want. Drinks are amazing and right now they have a spring sangria that is the BOMB! Not too sweet at all and pretty damn strong. Their menu changes pretty often, but I highly recommend the crostini if you like spicy food, and the smoked trout appetizer. Everything is made in-house including the pasta. I had cavatappi with their house-made Italian sausage last night and it was amazing! The sauce was light which is perfect for a warm summer night. The lemon rosemary donuts we ordered for dessert were a perfect marriage of savory and sweet. I don't always like dessert so I loved that it wasn't overly sweet and it comes with 5 donut holes which makes them easier to share. Only minor complaints are that sometimes the crust is a little too burnt, which is sort of expected since I think they use a wood-fire oven and those get insanely hot. We have had to throw away a few pieces of crust though (bummer because it's so good). Service can be a tad slow but we've been lucky in terms of being able to get seated where we want without having to wait. This is definitely going to be a new go-to for us! read more

Hersh's offers amazing food and is a great value. Every item that I have tried on their menu is spot on. I have to admit that my favorite is the Bucatini Carbonara. I am rarely surprised by food, but this dish surprised me. The taste is very different than you expect it to be based on the appearance. The pasta was cooked perfectly and the sauce somehow magically disappears but packs a wallop of flavor. How do they do that? On top of that, they figured out a way to make the pancetta crisp without being burnt. How do they do that? The bartender is an artist. He made me the best Rye Manhattan that I have ever had. The pizza crust is awesome. Crisp on the bottom and chewy. The toppings blend perfectly with the dough into a singularly wonderful experience. i would highly recommend Hersh's to anyone in the Baltimore area@! read more

Hersh's was amazing. I wish I lived in Baltimore just so I can eat here again. The food and service were impeccable. We went on a Wednesday, which meant half price wine- score! The waitress was knowledgeable about all the wine on the menu and gave feedback on what we ordered which was helpful. For starters we split the Salt Cod Fritters [a Hersh's classic, with salsa verde & lemon], the Crispy Brussels Sprouts [served with Dijon crema, ricotta salata & Italian parsley] and the Housemade Ricotta Crostini [with fried broccoli rabe, focaccia & a squirt of olive oil]. All were delicious. The ricotta crostini just melted in my mouth and the Brussel sprouts were delicious. The group I was with also decided to just order a bunch of plates to share, tapas style. That worked really well and I would recommend this for other groups. We ordered the Tuscan Kale Salad, the Spaghetti Carbonara, the Ravioli, and then a few pizzas: La Resistenza (proceeds which benefit the ACLU), Fumo e Fuoco and the Margherita. We ate it all! It was so good, my co-workers and I were not even being nice when we were going for last(s) of items, since we all wanted them. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone and can see why it was named one of the best restaurants to eat in Baltimore. read more

I have been wanting to try Hersh's for some time now and finally was able to go on a quiet Sunday evening. The renovation from the previous Rub BBQ location is quite lovely. The space is terrific. I had heard about the cocktails. The options did not disappoint, and I enjoyed my New York Sour. We ordered two pizzas (the cheese for the children) and the clam for us. I did not love the clam pizza, but I did love the cheese. We also had the house salad (fresh and crisp greens with a champagne vinaigrette), and the white bean crostini. I tried not to finish the crostini, but once I started, I could not stop. So delicious. I definitely want to go back when we can order additional pizzas and sample dessert. read more

Love the food. Love the "Moscow Mule" cocktail. Don't love the prices. The pizzas are reasonably priced, but appetizers and cocktails are steep. 2 meatballs (while mindblowing indeed) are never worth $10. I would have LOVED a 2nd, 3rd, etc. round of drinks, but my cocktail was $9 and served in a copper coffee mug (small) with LOTS of ice. Service and atmosphere are excellent. read more

I love pizza and always appreciate a good slice/pie, but my boyfriend and I found this pizza to be super soft in the middle to the point that it was soggy and the crust didn't have much flavor. Our server was very nice, friendly and knowledgable, which accounts for an extra star, but I wasn't impressed with the food and drinks. read more

The food at Hersh's was great and the waitstaff was very friendly. My wife and I were in the mood for pasta so we each tried one of their home-made pasta dishes and a salad. My pasta was a classic clams with white wine on tagliolini. The pasta was so fresh and the flavor was excellent. The service that night was a little slow and the nice waitstaff were very apologetic and comped our dessert and first round of drinks. If this was "bad" service I look forward to seeing what their good service is like. We were very pleased with the experience and will definitely come back. read more

The food was unusually good, it is not the typical Italian Food, most of the food has a twist to it. I would have never thought that a pepperoni pizza would taste good with a little bit of balsamic. We were told they prep their pasta early in the day, which on another point they didn't open it 5, oh and make a reservation it's easier. It's a very low key romantic place, good for a first date. The price is pretty high for what we were served, but I guess that's the cost for fresh pasta. Food was overall good and would go back again maybe in a different season. read more

I am not big into reviewing, but this place hits all of the high notes for me. The wait staff is so friendly, prompt and full of useful information about everything on the menu. The food (I've been there twice) is delicious and the way it is supposed to be (e.g., aldente pasta and slightly crispy pizza crust). And, the cocktails are kickass. I am writing this review with a very full belly from the phenomenal eats at Hersh's. The menu is very simple with a focus on fresh in-season ingredients and in addition they've got a great bar with some tasty beer to wash down your dish. I had the kale and pistachio pizza and it was delicious. We also split a cremini crostini which they accommodated by making it vegetarian (although if I ate meat I suspect the prosciutto chips would make it even better). This is a neighborhood gem and I came from Silver Spring! Well worth the drive, I highly recommend. read more

Loved this place! From start to finish we had a really nice time. Wait staff were all friendly. We were there on a Friday night and they honored happy hour prices at the tables, usually happy hour is only for people seated at the bar. For a party of four we split 2 salads, had two of their fresh pastas and two pizzas. The pasta plates come in 'small' and 'large'. I didn't think the large pasta was all that big but with the salad and pizza is was plenty of food. Since almost everything is made in house we wanted to try everything so ultimately the portion size was just right. They were nice enough to sub the smoked mozzarella on the margherita pizza which was out of this word. Paper thin crust, delicious sauce and amazing house made cheese. I'm envious of the people who live nearby who can drop in any time. Can't wait to go back and try more pizzas and pastas!! read more

This place is adorable. I've been meaning to get there for a while but rarely head to the Fed Hill area. I will definitely be going back because of Hersh's romantic set up, simple service and delicious pizza. We had the kale and pistachio pizza - definitely recommend. The pasta carbonara was great too, heavy on the pork flavor just a heads up. Can't beat a shot of Jameson and a local brew for $8. Finished up with some hazelnut mouse - not too big which is perfect. If I had written this review when Hersh's first opened I would have given them 5 stars. I'm always looking for good, off the beaten path "foodie" joints in Baltimore (specifically new places in Fed Hill since I live there) and I was in love at my first visit back in April (?). The menu had a wide variety of small plates and apps, and some really delicious, original pizzas. I went with a group of my girlfriends and we ordered a sampling of things on the menu (crostini, proscuitto balls, "the meatball", and a few different types of pizzas). All were amazing! I had been dying to go back so when my mom and aunt came to visit the last weekend in June I knew exactly where I wanted to take them for dinner. I was SO disappointed! They took half of their apps and small plates off the menu (including the delicious meatball and crostini I had on my first visit!) leaving me with not many options to choose from as I wasn't in the mood for pizza and neither were my mom and aunt. We actually all ended up ordering the same pasta dish (the Housemade Tagliolini) which was fresh and delicious. It came in a white clam sauce which was very fresh, but maybe included 4 clams. I was also still starving when I finished (the portion was ridiculously small) and ended up eating at least 4 slices of pizza that were luckily leftover from my husband and sister-in-law. I give Hersh's 3 stars for 3 things: 1. fresh and tasty ingredients, 2. great ambiance, 3. friendly and accomodating serice Unfortunately they lost the last 2 stars for downsizing their menu and portion size :( the pizza is good, but not my favorite in Federal Hill (I would recommend HomeSlyce or Social Pub & Pie) read more

I love everything about this place. From the week it opened it became our go-to restaurant in the neighborhood. At this point I have eaten almost everything on the menu and have never been disappointed. Hersh's has the only real Neapolitan pizza in Baltimore and it is delicious. But, the small plates and cocktails are the true stars of this menu. They are inventive and made with top-quality ingredients. Everything always tastes so fresh. The servers are friendly and helpful. I also appreciate that they are always adding to and changing their menu, but only once they perfect a dish. This ensures that everything remains up to the kitchen's very high standards. Pizza is my favorite food. Hands down. Specifically Neapolitan pizza. Hersh's does Neapolitan right. Its thin, with dough that is slightly tender, and airy with lightly charred spots on the cornicione. The mozzarella is homemade as are some of the other toppings, like the sausage (which is excellent) and pickled peppers. The margarita, Salsicia, kale and pistachio, clam and cacio e pepe pizzas are my favorites. It's hard for me to come here and not get the pizza. However everything else on the menu is very good too. The menu is small by design and what they do, they do well. Ambiance and music selection is good too -- chill and not too loud. Beer selection is excellent too. There's something new and great to try each time I go in. Everything about this place is well thought out. Definitely recommend. read more

Having been to Hersh's a few times now, I can say this is certainly one of my favorite spots in Baltimore. A pleasant and intimate atmosphere and the food is spectacular. About 2 weeks ago, they had an entree that I must say was unlike any pasta dish I've ever had before (and that says a lot coming from a girl who is a part of an Italian family). It was tagliolini pasta topped with 6 over-sized clams topped with a very light white wine sauce of sorts... Just so delicious! And I must add that the cocktails are fantastic as well. So, if you haven't been to Hersh's, you should certainly give them a whirl. read more

Dick Gorelick's flattering review in the Baltimore Sun (11/28/2013) prompted a visit to Hersh's Pizza and Drinks for dinner on Saturday night. Numbed from eating our way through Thanksgiving leftovers, we arrived in need of some culinary entertainment and were seated at the bar almost immediately. We were greeted by an attentive mixologist/server and wine and dinner was ordered by 6:15 pm. At 6:20 pm the antipasti arrived - meatballs - the house specialty according to our helper. Ostensibly prepared from dry-aged brisket & pine nuts, the meat was nearly flavorless. Without the marinara, which was bright and spicy, it would have been Betty Crocker's rendition of a bridge party appetizer. After too quick a start, we quietly endured over an hour wait for the entrees to arrive. Our margherita pizza arrived hot but limp, greasy and undercooked. But the orecchiette with duck was inedible. The first bite, long awaited, tasted like a nickel-sized portion of Crisco rolled in diced beef jerky. Pushing the pasta aside in a tilted bowl revealed a pool of added and rendered fat. It was returned and removed from the check. This could have been an anomaly - a one-time kitchen fail that does not reflect the capability of this restaurant or its owners and chefs. A guy I know is a chef here so after seeing his FB status of him at hersch's for so long I decided to make the trip and it was worth it. My friend who I went with and I split a fumo pizza as an appetizer. Very good crust, delicious eggplant. My entrée was the gnocchi. Best pasta dish ever. Had moist chicken and some apple. Great mix of different foods. Worth every penny!!!!! I'm going back for that gnocchi!!!!! read more

I lived in NYC for over a decade, been to Italy, New Haven....and the pizza at Hersh's is just as good. Does not reheat well. It's meant to be eaten there. The staff is super knowledgeable. We love Hersh's. It can be a bit pricey and the cocktails are a bit small, but it is worth it. We try to get something new each time we go, and it is always spot on. We love it so much we had our rehearsal dinner there, and everything was marvelous. The staff recommended the bruschetta as one of the appetizers which sounded somewhat boring, but Hersh's made bruschetta memorable and delicious. Compliments for days from our guests. Let start off with the positives. Food was great. We had reservations and were seated at the table by the door. Probably should have spoke up but we did not. Guess it's our fault. We were celebrating our daughters 37 birthday which was not acknowledged in any way. We brought a cake for her birthday and was told there would be a 3$ per plate charge to eat it there. Are you kidding me?? We went ahead and ordered three deserts , one being ice cream and none of the three were complimentary for her birthday. Not really expected but after being told we couldn't eat our cake there you may think maybe the small plate of ice cream that was supposed to be a flavor but it tasted like vanilla could be complimentary. The Tiramisu was excellent and so was the lemon cake. The waitress was only ok. No personality and only smiled when she delivered the check. We want to try it again and recommend it to people because the food was good but, I will not rush back and I'm sure our word of mouth will probably come out as more negative than positive when discussing Hersh's. There are to many other places to try and there was no effort put forth by this business to give us a reason to return. Guess they have that attitude that they are doing fine and do not have to do anything extra for their customers. I could go on and on and my wife had other thoughts about how they could have handled just about everything else in a better more customer Friendly way. read more

This is a really nice place, clean and well laid out for a pizza cafe with a small (10 person) bar in the center of the downstairs dining room. I liked the decor ( a great rehab of an old grocery store named Hirsh's) and the fact there was not a TV to be seen anywhere. The menu is short and concise and has enough to make a tasty meal consisting of an appetizer, pizza, salad and dessert. We started with an appetizer of baked whipped Ricotta cheese with olive oil on the top and some crostini bread slices. It's a nice idea and can be split by up to four people (we were 3). The bread was good but the cheese spread lacked flavor - it was bland in my opinion. Some herbs or garlic or cracked pepper was needed to give this a unique flavor and to show off the the chef's creativity. We then ordered two pizzas, one was a margherita and the other a two cheese pizza. We went simple on the margherita to taste the sauce, crust and cheese. The crust is very light and thin and tasty to eat but unfortunately was a bit soggy on the end. The best way to eat this pie is to pick it up a piece and roll it over to capture the wet end. Actually I just ate most of each slice as the crust was very good without eating that wet end.The other pizza was the two cheese variety with mushrooms and onions. This was the more flavorful of the two not just because of the toppings but the mixture of melted cheeses gave it more taste. Here is where I want to mention that there are not that many toppings to choose from and I suggested to the manager - who was very nice and listened - that variety is the spice of pizza. Hopefully they will add more as customers ask for them. As far as the salad it was not an interesting mix of greens. The house dressing was okay but nothing special and a bit heavy to go with the pizza. Maybe they could work on a tasty cold pressed olive oil and balsamic vinegar dressing and create a second choice. We had room for dessert and ordered the ice cream trio served on crispy cookies with a semi-soild caramel sauce. The ice creams were tasty and from a local dairy we were advised, but the rubbery cold caramel sauce and the crunchy toppings needed some attention to make them more interesting We also split an almond tart which was sweet,warm and tasty and served with a dollop of that local vanilla ice cream. After we were done we all enjoyed the meal. However, it could have been better with some attention to detail and more variety. I hope the brother and sister owners are successful because the concept is nice for single, couple and family meals. I noticed that families with small children were coming in to eat an early dinner. Lastly, it would be nice for them to ask their customers for input on how to make this place really good as I think this could be a possibility.
