I drove past this place my whole life. Never went in. The place doesn't jump out at you to say it has great food or that it has a welcoming environment. The one time I went there, it was unforgettable. My husband and I went inside and it looks like a bar. Fine. We are walked past that to go into a room that was a hideous shade of green with bunnies painted on the wall. Like we're in some freakish nursery. I hoped the food would be good. It was the worst food of my life. I ordered meatloaf since the waitress said they're known for their meatloaf. It was a flavorless salt lick. Their mashed potatoes were in this god-awful gravy. I know this place is somewhat of an institution, and I really hate to rate it so low, but it's just not that good. I know, I'm SORRY! We ventured here because my husband had done some research on the best fried chicken in MD, and this is what so many people suggested. We both tried it, and we both didn't agree with all the believers out there. The chicken itself lacked flavor, and was so disappointing after a 25 minute wait for them to cook it to order. The sides, in the meantime, came out freezing cold. You know how you want a really great mac and cheese or hushpuppy to accompany your fried chicken? This stuff just didn't make the cut. The service was attentive and you can tell that many of the staff have been there for years, which I think is a nice testament to the atmosphere of the place. I should have listened to the review I previously read because I was not impressed. I ordered the two piece white meat chicken dinner with collard greens and sweet potato. First off, the chicken was extremely salty. I will say it was juicy but they need to lay off the salt. Secondly, the collard greens were not seasoned. It was okay. Thirdly, the sweet potato was dry. I didn't know it was prepared like a baked potato. So you would think they would have the fixings like one with the brown sugar, butter and nutmeg but it didn't have any of that. Starting with the positive. The Fried Chicken! It is excellent, the best around. However, they make each batch to order so be prepared to wait. Have had other items on the menu, but they are nothing special. Staff, when you can find them, can be anywhere from surly to okay, again nothing special. My boyfriend's brother decided to take us here last night. He heard that the chicken was really good and really wanted to try it. It's pretty far into the middle of almost nowhere, but it's also pretty big and has a huge sign, so it's hard to miss it. We walked in and there's a cute little foyer. You go past this and then there's a bar on the left (Thursdays was open mic night, so there was some live music). Go past this into a little hallway and that's when you get into the restaurant area. The decor is VERY American farm-style, but with pastel walls. An oddity I did notice and question is the window on a window (if you go here, you'll see what I'm talking about). There were 2 TVs in the restaurant area and in (what looked like) the buffet(?)/ice cream area. Although you can tell they have a certain kind of clientele, the waitress was still very nice to us (other yelpers may have had a different waitress). She accidentally spilled water on my boyfriend and to compensate, she upgraded all 3 of our sides to the large size and only charged us for 1! Pretty good deal, IMHO. So service (except for her tripping) was really high for me. Now, we went there for the fried chicken. There were 4 of us and we were all going to order the two-piece dark meats each ($8 each) that come with two sides, but the waitress recommended us to get 2 fried chicken baskets from the appetizer section (also $8 each) that included 5 pieces of either legs, wings, or thighs, so we'd have 10 pieces instead of 8, but no sides. We ordered sides of mashed potatoes, fries, and green beans ($2 each). *Be prepared to wait awhile (25+ min) for the chicken since they cook it fresh)* First out were the sides. I didn't try the green beans, but my boyfriend seemed to like it. The mashed potatoes were creamy and fluffy with a nice helping of gravy atop it. The fries, though, tasted very bland. Fortunately, they had a garlic/Parmesan shaker to add some flavor to the fries. Now for the chicken. The outside was so crispy and the inside was fairly juicy. The only problem we had was that the skin was really salty, and that's where the french fries and mashed potatoes came in to offset the lingering salty taste. I will say that the chicken was pretty good, but it's not omg-blow-me-out-of-the-water amazing. So, I'm not sure if I would come here again, but if I do, it may be awhile. read more

Very good food but the slowest service in Gaithersburg. The bar is full of regulars. Can't go wrong with the: Catfish, burgers, ranch fries, fried chicken (excellent). We like Hershey's for its casual, comfy feel and good ol' home cooking. Locally known for their fried chicken, they also serve steaks, crab cakes, meatloaf and more. While my husband can't resist the chicken, my friend and I are partial to the patty melt served with french fries. The quality of the ground beef is really good and flavorful. The bakery rye bread had wonderful flavor and texture. The fries are crisp on the outside, moist on the inside and well drained of oil. Families should bypass the bar seating and head straight for the charming country style decorated dining room. Good food at very reasonable prices. read more

Shocked to see about 100 unmasked people close to each other outside listening to a band and drinking/eating, and the inside packed with people sitting close to each other unmasked and many elbow to elbow at the bar with maybe half wearing masks. Location of restaurant is really hard to find its hidden behind the regular spot routes. Once you get there you they have amazing customer service and a bar as well where you can watch sports. I would recommend thier fried chicken they are so tender and juicy not blend and dry. read more

I want to say that I had the most pleasant experience last weekend here. The bald headed bartender (sorry I don't remember his name and I can't describe him other than that) was the most pleasant bartender I have encountered in quite a while. Even though he was busy, he made sure all of his customers were taken care of along with other restaurant duties. I greatly appreciate this as I was in the restaurant business and this is very hard to find these days. Does the food take a little bit? Yes, but they also state that it is made to order (I remember this pre Covid). I have always gotten "to go", so to eat there was a plus. I have been here other times, but usually just for carryout. You come here for three reasons 1) Fried Chicken - don't bother to order anything else. The chicken's great. Everything else is pretty lackluster (at least since they dropped the crab dip from the menu). 2) Beer - draft, cheap, cold. The small pitcher is the best deal by volume. 3) Shots - once you're a regular they start coming in rocks glasses. Which may or may not be a good thing. I've been coming here since I was in diapers (literally) and my family used to pick up the mail here. It doubled as the post office back in the day. My friends band played this past Saturday night and no one warned the staff that it would get crowded. Ok so I can't comment on the normal turn around time for food. Not an easy location to find. Have lived in the area a long time and had never been to this part of Gaithersburg. My Google maps got me there no problem but almost drove by it. Parking is limited. Now on to the experience. When the waiter asked about drinks, I asked for a wine list. The waiter told me they only have house. When I asked what it was he said it was not the best, I could have red or white. I said I needed to rethink my choice. After that I knew the type of food to expect. Apparently there signature dish is their fried chicken (earning them a 4 star rating) and there menu is very chicken heavy. Being a vegan I ordered chicken tenders with honey mustard for my 5 year old, fries, hush puppies and a Modelo for me (didnt have Dos Equis). The chicken tenders looked dry but my 5 year old didn't care. The fries were OK but the organic ketchup was weird; tasted better with the honey mustard. The hush puppies were clearly a box mix. Ice cream shop was closed so no comment on that. Not a place I would recommend to any foodies but for a BASIC meal and drinks it was alright. read more

Best fried chicken and waffles I've had in a long time. The chicken is crunchy and still incredibly juicy, and the waffles are beautifully golden crisp. The only down side was the syrup... not quite on par with the rest of the stuff, but delicious none the less. I had fries and hush puppies (and bypass surgery) with my C+W, and would definitely recommend you put the hush puppies in the syrupy, fried mix as you crunch through a really good but not so healthy meal. Very bad service Brandon was SUPPOSE to be our waiter. He was working the bar. He never once came to our table to ask us if we needed anything we had to keep asking the tall waiter not sure of his name but he deserved our tip. Brandon has an extremely nasty attitude. It is nice to see this historic local place had reopened for indoor dining on March 4 so we had to try it out. What's great is that you can either choose breakfast food or from the lunch menu. The eggs benedict was very well made and delicious. The French toast, which was made with their own style of unique bread, was some of the best anywhere. The fried chicken is good- and the mashed potatoes and gravy should be in their own separate food group because they are the very best I have tasted in a long time anywhere. Despite what I'm reading in the other reviews the service was just fine and did not leave us hanging at all. Granted, the restaurant can only have so much capacity right now; even so, we were very promptly attended to and the whole experience was nice and cozy. I definitely want to go back and try other things since there is a variety of both breakfast and lunch items that look well worth trying. read more
