Really disappointing experience. First-time visitor, habitual repeater and promoter of places we love. Had it not been for the Park itself and a few local restaurants, the Hershey Lodge would have kept us from ever even considering returning to Hershey, PA.
Reservations made in March for an August mid-week trip. Traveling with friends/neighbors so I reserved both of our rooms. Rooms roughly $300/night each, 2 night stay. This was to be our 'last hurrah' before school start. About 2 months out we needed to change dates by a week, slight increase in room rate, no problem, EXCELLENT customer service over the phone. In mid-July, totally unexpected, my husband was diagnosed with a brain tumor, end-July he had brain surgery. This mini-vacation was the carrot we dangled in front of our kids to get them through a very scary time.
About 2 weeks prior to our trip I called customer service again because my husband's surgery was a success, benign tumor, and his neurosurgeon cleared him to join us on the trip! YAY! I needed to check on accommodations, ensure he could get into the park (but not ride anything) - just basically making sure the environment was comfortable and safe. Again, great phone customer service. We arrived at the Lodge, so excited. It went downhill from there.
- Check-in was a zoo. The lobby area is dark and cramped for such a large space. It's possible the ceiling height is low? Unsure, it just immediately screamed 'dated'. We get through check-in, got our keys, informed the desk that we are 'Hershey Park newbies' and asked what do we need to know. Really not told much of anything. Handed keys, map to room. The person at Kids Check-in was surly toward all children.
- We were in the Cocoa/Q area. Basically the furthest point from everything at the Lodge. We booked months in advance. I'm assuming that since we didn't know what lodge region to ask for we were placed in the oldest wing, the farthest from dining, pool, lobby, coffee, etc. Arrive at room - neither key worked. Sent my Dad back to the desk to get the keys to re-run. We needed to take my husband out to the car to wait as there is no air-conditioning in the hallways in the Cocoa wing. (Other areas have a/c in the halls - from York to lobby.)
- Rooms are seriously shabby in the Cocoa wing. Room was about 80 degrees when we stepped in. Old school wall unit air conditioning units sound like a continuous waterfall, our bathroom door didn't shut, dark dark hairs in sink upon check-in, tub-stopper didn't work, slow/sluggish toilet flush, no suitcase stand/rack - and very small/dingy/dusty. My 5 year old dropped her puppy (stuffed) behind the bedside table and EGADS - do NOT look there. This was very surprising to me. We specifically chose the Lodge over the Hershey Hotel due to it being more family-oriented (per word of mouth). Rooms are shockingly below par. We did not complain about any of these things because we'd been told repeatedly at check-in that the Lodge was booked solid. Only being there for 2 nights, why would I want an hour of that filled with someone fixing our room. NOTE: The hotel was extremely busy. Perhaps this is why everything was messy, etc.
- The gift shop is awesome - lots to choose from, reasonable prices.
- Bought our Hershey Park tickets from the concierge desk. GREAT price. However, we weren't told until the day we left (too late) that Lodge guests get to enjoy the park the evening prior to ticket use for free AND get an extra morning hour at the park! WE HAD NO IDEA!
- Dining - we ate at the Grill (the one you have to enter from the outside, past the convention center area?) for dinner. Unimpressed. We grabbed coffee from the Beanery one morning - really rude service. I had been told to try the peanut butter coffee so I got 2 pumps in and it ran out. I asked a sales person if there was another brewing because this one was out. She responded, "YOU'LL HAVE TO WAIT!!!" After 10 minutes I just requested another cup since mine had 2 pumps of peanut butter coffee in it, cold. Grabbed a regular coffee. Ate the breakfast buffet one morning before the park. It is not expensive but really not great either. There is a Dunkin at the Park entrance - I'd go that route next time.
- Swam in the pool one night. Kids loved the indoor one. Large pool, no slides, nothing fancy, but large uncrowded pool.
- S'mores packets - marshmallows already melted in bag. Needs rethinking in the summer maybe.
As a side note, my husband did not get to participate in ANY of the Lodge events. Our room was so far removed from everything that the non-air-conditioned hallways kept him from joining us. Literally a 'meh' motel. We did not experience what our friends have raved about and we are the easiest people EVER to please. Disappointing.
Hershey Park? AWESOME. Lodge? No or possibly this was an atypical experience. read more
