I've heard lots of wonderful things about the Hershey Lodge so I guess my expectation were fairly high coming in, especially given the nightly price. In the end, I was a bit disappointed but overall we did have an enjoyable stay.
The lobby is really nice, especially the large fireplace in the middle. If you are lucky, you can grab one of the seats around the fireplace but those seats tend to go pretty quick! We were here the weekend before Thanksgiving and the place was already nicely decorated for the holidays. I would suggest doing express check-in ahead of time. Had we not done that, it would have been a wait as the line was pretty long for regular check-in. When you arrive, you have to park out front and then go inside to check-in. Then you will want to drive your car around and park closer to where your room is. The downside to this hotel is that it is quite sprawled out. We were unfortunately on one end of the complex and it was quite the walk just to get to the middle to get down to the lobby. And we have a child with a disability and while he can walk, he's slow so it often took us 5-7 minutes to walk from our room to the lobby.
This is not really a fancy place by any means and it is really meant more for families. The hallways were sort of dark and there were portions that needed some attending to. Most rooms are accessed from the inside but we also saw rooms with outside access. In some ways it reminded me of an old apartment building and in other ways it reminded me of an office building. Aside from the lobby, I didn't exactly get the "lodge" feeling.
The rooms are pretty basic but do come with a mini fridge and safe. The closet was very small and there was no luggage rack included. The bathroom door was always in the way of using the toilet or the shower. There is no lighting above the bath/shower and unfortunately they use a brown shower curtain, which made it even darker in the shower area. The top part of the shower curtain does allow light through though. My other complaint with the room was the lack of power near the bed. As someone with a CPAP machine, I need easy access to an available outlet. There is one, but it's behind the bed a bit. I also like to have my phone charging near the bed since I always use it as my alarm clock. This was not possible here. Don't expect to find any USB power ports in the room either. Housekeeping was just OK. The one day she didn't refill the spare toilet paper container and she left a wet towel in the shower on another day.
Free WiFi is available but it's only good for checking email and browsing some sites. If you want to stream videos or do FaceTime, etc. then it's not so great for that, but for $10 a day you can upgrade and get more bandwidth. Pretty frustrating given the nightly rate already.
There are quite a few restaurants within the hotel where you can grab breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Of the various places, our favorites were the Hershey Grill and Forebay.
Earlier this year, they opened up their new "Water park", which is only available to Lodge guests. The pool area (and fitness center for that matter) was on the far other end of the hotel, so for us, quite the walk. Also, you do have to go outside to get to the building housing the pool and fitness center, which really stinks in the middle of winter! That said, the pool/water park was fun. You'll find zero entry pool areas, splash pads, little slides for young ones, plus two Twizzler slides for bigger kids. From a height perspective, you have to be a Reese to go on the Twizzler slides. Both are enclosed slides that start inside, go outside, and then come back inside at the end of the slides. Although they are fully enclosed, the one has enough light that you can see what's going on. The other slide is darker but still has some holes in it to allow some light to come in so it's not completely dark. They are both fun slides and I lost count as to how many times my boys went down the slides. There is also a larger pool area where you can swim around and they have a couple of basketball hoops if you want to play basketball in the pool. We spent about six hours there and my boys were wiped out by the end.
The hotel does offer free shuttle service to the park and the shuttle seemed to come around every 20-30 minutes. If you don't want to utilize the shuttle, you can easily drive to the park and pay the $9 to park there. It would be nice if hotel guests got free parking similar to what Disney does. read more
