Hermosa Cafe is a locals-only hot spot on Durango's main drag. I got crunchy and granola vibes and I don't say that in a bad way. It actually reminded me of a cafe I used to frequent in college. They make all their baked goods in house, it's tough to choose! You order at the counter and the line was long on a Saturday morning. They have a handwritten chalkboard menu behind the counter, but if you can't see it in line they have paper menus to grab at the register. The tough decisions arise when you get close to the pastry case. It's filled with delicious quiches, buns, and morning staples. I was intrigued by the quiches and they had a huge selection of them. I landed on the green chile and bacon (I think it was bacon?!) When I went to order I was hit with a question I wasn't prepared for. They asked me if I wanted it on a regular pie crust or a hashbrown crust. FTW?! I had never heard of such a thing. They said if I like potatoes then get the hashbrown crust...I'm so glad I trusted their recommendation! They indeed bake hashbrowns into the quiche and it acts as the crust. I don't know which crazy genius concocted this sorcery, but holy moly I love the ingenuity! I don't eat quiche that much and this one stood out. I'd definitely suggest the quiches to other people! A little chaotic inside on a weekend. You bus your own tables and the line gets narrow when you have constant foot traffic back and forth for picking up your order, going to the bathroom, etc. Staff was working hard though to move as quickly as they could. Incredible cafe on the local strip in Durango! We wanted to stop somewhere before our flight and to walk around and this was such a great cafe. Love the vibe of the place--lots of seating, games, colorful decor and local goods. I got an oat milk peppermint bark latte which was good and they have so many syrups to choose from both house made and otherwise. I also got their bacon spinach Swiss quiche which was amazing--loved the added hash and it was the perfect portion and was so tasty heated up. They have a lot of gf options as well and my friend got their avocado toast on gf toast which was good. Service was easy with ordering at the counter and pick up and the barista and cashier were also very friendly. Definitely check this place out! read more

The 4 stars are about the service mostly and less about the food or coffee. Staff worked with me to try to find anything they could for me with all my allergens. Ended up with some lunch meat and some avocado. They didn't charge me much for it, which bonus points honestly. The coffee i had was decidedly not good though. One of the fall drinks. Was so bad I only sipped it twice and then tossed it. Family ate their meals but didn't seem enthused. Half of one meal got tossed from someone who usually eats the whole plate. It's tough to give a 2-star review because this place seems to have such a great local presence. Unfortunately for us, our visit was no bueno. The shop is cute and right on main street, and it was one of the only places open early so we stopped in for some coffee and pastries. We stood in line near the pastry case and I noticed that there were some quiches sitting in pie pans, uncovered on the counter. As we got closer to the register, there were a few more pies and a few cinnamon rolls also sitting, uncovered in dishes on the counter. Their sign says their goodies are baked fresh daily but I recognized a few things in the case from a big box bulk store and the desserts we ordered tasted a bit stale. The cinnamon roll we got was hard as a rock - maybe it was because it was old or maybe because it had been sitting out in the open air? Who knows. We also got specialty coffees and neither had any flavor, despite both being flavored. We were able to doctor them up with some cream and sugar on the counter and went on our merry way. Hermosa does have great potential to be "hermosa", hopefully it was just an off day. read more

I think this is a friendly little spot. The coffee is pretty good, though I tend to stick to drip and the occasional latte. The food offerings are probably the best among the city's coffee shops. I particularly like the quiche offerings - bacon, green chile and cheddar is a pretty solid combo. Prices are a bit high, but portions are generous and the food is good. The best thing about this cafe is the ambiance. The front is noisy and brisk, as you would expect from a Main Avenue coffee shop, while the back is quiet and comfy. There is plenty of upholstered seating and a very comfortable couch. This is among the most pleasant places to read or get some work done. Unfortunately, there is one problem with Hermosa Cafe that has persisted over my dozens of visits to this cheerful spot. The service is very, very slow. The staff is quite friendly, but I suspect there are organizational issues that prevent brisk coffee service. I don't even bother coming in if there are more than three people in line. Just now, for example, I waited almost fifteen minutes for an iced coffee. This is not great. On the whole, I like this place - if you're not in a hurry, and why should you be in our chill town, you will too. I can recommend it. Happy travels! Seatbelts! read more
