The first time I came by Herkimer I cupped ;-) my eyes around the window and peeked in like a kid looking into a candy shop. The Cafe had closed minutes earlier and I vowed to return. Yesterday we did. The roaster is one of the largest I've seen and although there was no activity in the Roaster room while we were there, I enjoyed seeing all the Coffee bags and other accouterments of the trade. The espresso had a full body with no bitter edge at all. We had Cappuccino and Americana style. The shop is quite nice and there is wireless as well. I picked up a bag of beans of the espresso for later. The customer service is polite and very efficient but not particularly friendly. I can live with that when the coffee and ambiance is so good. :-) Phinney Ridge is not exactly in Seattle, proper, but it's worth the ride out and the area has a lot to offer. read more

Double Espresso: Very surprising - Medium body with a deep brown crema and chocolate flavors. It was rich, complex, smooth, with a hint of fruit. Overall, a pretty good shot. Intensity diminished in milk, but not to the point that it wasn't recognizable. Still smooth and sweet. Overall, I was surprised at how good Herkimer Coffee ended up being. The environment was comfortable, with enough area to hang out or study. Their espresso was also very good - better than a lot of places in Seattle. The fact that this place rates out about 3.5 stars just goes to show how spoiled (okay let's call it rich) that those who live in Seattle city are when it comes to local coffeehouses. This is one of my favorite spots in the Phinney/Greenwood area when I come to visit. I've found the coffee and especially Americano to be quite smooth on the palate. None of that harsh burn taste that we unfortunately have to suffer through in LA!!! Service is friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient. Great place to stop in or sit and pass the time. I've decided to review this location. I go a lot and I'm considering trying to find a new place near me (I live near here). For the sole reason being... customer service. The staff are NOT interested in the fact that you're there. They barely make eye contact, barely say thank you and make you feel like you're an inconvenience. I go many early mornings and there is one woman (I wish I knew her name) that is friendly and the rest are not. Today I went in, ordered two americanos and got one. I mentioned I ordered two and the lady (not the nice one I referred to earlier) said "well, I didn't hear that." She said it with attitude. This is just one overt example, but it's the feeling in general for the most part. I like the coffee but won't keep going if I keep feeling unwelcomed. read more

My friends who live in the area got me here for a morning cup of coffee on a Saturday. I was also looking to buy single origin beans (even get a subscription if they turned out to be good) so I was excited to go here. The place has a roastery in this location and as you stand in the line to place your order, you can watch the coffee beans being roaster on the other side of the glass. As I was looking to buy some single origin beans, I wanted to try them out. I asked if they had any single origin beans on drip and the barista said they only had blend (Drip blend as it's called) I told them I was looking to buy some beans and asked if I could get a pour over. To which they said no. I am ok with them saying no, but it felt like the barista was being irritated by my question. I went to pay for my coffee and the lady behind the counter asked me if I wanted anything else. As I was looking at the pastry / breads cabinet, she gave me a very irritated expression and sighed. By this point I got a distinct feeling of not being welcome. I went ahead without getting anything else. I got my coffee which was given to me in 2 cups (assuming it was hot) I said I didn't need a second cup and by then physics had started to act up and the inside cup was sitting snugly and could not be taken out. Their cups are actually pretty nice with their custom design on them. I was just sad that they're throwing away a perfectly good extra cup instead of just getting a sleeve (or not! I was ok without it) We came outside and sat on the chairs outside as we sipped the coffee. The coffee was pretty nice. I tasted my friend's Americano and that was good. I only wish I'd have gotten to taste some of their single origins to take some beans back home. There's a spot outside with water bowl where you can see doggos sitting patiently as their hoomans are getting coffee. Both the inside and outside seating was nice. UPDATE: Reed and Janelle(forgive my spelling mistakes) reached out and clarified everything. They offered a free replacement bag and have been nothing but professional and courteous. I just got back in the area and dropped by. Coffee is awesome, the team is phenomenal. I'm still a fan and supporting their growth. --- I've been coming to this coffee shop quite frequently and really enjoy it. Yesterday morning I purchased a bag of Ethiopian Kochere (usually do about 1 bag every 2 weeks - will swap it from time to time for a new flavor). This morning I brewed it with my v60, and the flavor just tasted moldy and not like coffee at all. I've had bad coffee before, so I just decided to bring it back in hopes for an exchange on what was the majority of the bag minus a cup's worth of beans. I spoke with the barista at the time, and asked if they would allow for me to exchange a bag of beans, or offer any type of refund. The barista insisted that they can't do anything since the bag left the coffee shop. How are you supposed to make sure a full bag of coffee is ok without taking it home to brew? I left the shop paying for a second bag of coffee this week and learning that they will no attempt to correct a situation. This is not the level of customer service I was expecting, there wasn't even an attempt. It was really disappointing. The staff are amazing and were genuinely concerned when I told them I was giving my missing interviewer an hour and a half to call or email me back. The coffee is tasty, the atmosphere is casual, welcoming and comfortable and my go-to drink (a grande mocha) was just a wee bit cheaper than nearby shops at $4.25, with tax. It was early afternoon, so I didn't get a chance to see what their selection of pastries was like (their case had been worked through and they'd consolidated what little they had left) but what I did see looked good. My mother always taught me that if I had nothing nice to say I should say nothing at all... but this time I feel obligated to say something. :( In fact this is my very first one star yelp review. I've heard so many good things about Herkimer. In fact, I like their coffee but every interaction I've had there has been terrible. 3/3 :( On my first trip there, my family asked me to bring back $100-150 good coffee, half ground (to be given away as gifts to friends that they knew did not have a grinder) and half whole bean. When I asked for the half to be ground, the barista refused saying that it would ruin the beans. While I understood what he was saying and I agreed, I kindly replied that they would be gifts to friends whom I knew back in California did not have grinders. He rudely refused again giving me unforgettable looks of aggravation and attitude. Beginning to become frustrated I called my family again who told me to calm down a little and just remain polite. I asked again kindly that while I understood that coffee should remain in whole bean form before being used my family requested that I ask to bring it back ground. In response I was told that I should go across the street to a grocery store to grind them myself and repackage them. -_-x Can you believe that? SERIOUSLY... What happened to the customer is always right? ________________________________________________________ Thinking that my one incidence was just a fluke, today I tried to come back and give them another chance. This time I asked if I could get some WHOLE beans but only buy half a bag or have one bag split into two. While I understand that it might not be company policy to do so... I was given no such explanation. Instead again I was given a dirty look, told that they refused, and then the barista left me at the counter and made other drinks for other people. No "I'm sorry". No what can I do to help you. No recognition that I as a customer deserved any form or respect! I rarely if ever get upset when at a restaurant. Can't believe we're at 3.5 stars for this fantastic place. This is my #1 coffee spot in the city & am fully hooked on their amazing roasts. If you do espresso at home, you simply must give the standard espresso beans a try! I've yet to find anything even close. The baristas are competent & do it right. Some are actually outstanding at what they do. From me, this is saying something since I can consistently pull better shots at home than 99% of the baristas in town. Because I'm a nerd, I like to spend early weekend morning hours with cup of coffee, a fresh-baked pastry, and a to-do list of papers to grade, emails to respond to, shopping lists to make. Last night, in anticipation of this, I realized I'm kind of sick of m regular hang-outs, so I decided to try something new. So now I find myself at Herkimer. They have all my basic requirements: 1. Open at 7. 2. Free wifi. 3. Within the 2-mile-radius I like to keep my life reigned into. Beware: They accept cash only! They'll take a check if your order is over $10 and you have ID. My some small miracle I had cash on me, so I was able to order. As they made me one quite delicious Americano, I spent a few minutes debating over the baked good selection. Mighty-O donut? Cinnamon roll? Scone? Muffin? Croissant? Mini-quiche? How am I supposed to choose?! Ended up with a whole wheat marionberry scone, which was perfect because it wasn't too sweet. The only thing was, it was a little cold. I don't demand that they be right out of the oven, but I don't like my pastries to feel like they just came out of the fridge, either. Looking about, I can see that things are kept very tidy here, which is nice. All of their furniture matches, but not in an assembly-line kind of way. There is also some sweet artwork up--an armadillo. a snail. a crow. seahorses, tree frog. Random, yes. Interesting, also yes. The baristas seem very nice as well. I got here about the instant they opened, so it was pretty quiet and they weren't too chatty, but by now lots or regulars are coming in and everyone's yukking it up. Man, do I feel left out. Usually I am a Stumptown loyalist but recently had Herkimer coffee at Restaurant Roux (with beignets that made me cry) in Fremont. And wow! Truly delicious coffee! No burnt beans here- (I think you know to which coffee I refer...) I am more of a medium bodied coffee lover- love the sweet and fruity and nutty and creamy notes a delicately roasted bean can provide and so I'm having an affair with Herkimer coffee. Sorry Stumptown, but since I've been to Herkimer's Greenwood location and they treat me so much better, and their coffee is just as good, and their pastries are better than yours, well, I'm leaving you. read more

CASH ONLY! I kind of wish that cash-only places would list their prices with tax included because counting out change last minute gets kind of annoying. It'd be even better if they just eliminated the change portion altogether and dealt with everything rounded to the nearest dollar. They roast ze beanz in here so it may get a little noisy, but their perfectly prepared espresso beverages and a good book will help you drown out the sound. The parking situation isn't so great, but you can usually steal a spot in the neighbourhood below. The Greenwood location is their first and has a roastery in a nice space overlooking Greenwood Ave with large windows. Expect the same awesome coffee you will find at other locations. The line may also move a little slowly as everything is manual, but it is always worth the wait. There is free wifi, and the bright and spacious room is the perfect place to read or meet friends. The U District location has its own charm but I find it a little too dark to spend a long period of time. Anyway, definitely love the original and this part of Greenwood, which seems like a quiet oasis from just 10 blocks north! read more

I really like sitting in the window of Herkimer sipping tea and watching the cars and people go by. The stools are pretty comfy, they have big tables for work groups or the innumerable study groups/meetup groups I've seen here. The gals behind the machines are always perky without being in your face chipper and seem to know when you just need a cup of something to get your day started without inundating you with mindless yammer if you don't want it. The roast is so perfect that you can bearly detect that it has been roasted just pure bean flavor no milk required just straight shot. all the other little things that we rate coffee shops was spot on 100 percent. I pass through here when I'm too lazy to brew at home or when I need free WIFI as this tends to be a quieter spot than say ZOKA (whose coffee I prefer). The cash only thing has caught me off guard a couple of times. I do understand the fleecing the merchants get from the bank on fees but rejecting standard technology that makes your product better available to your customer base just baffles me. Like most Seattle coffee shops, the service is adequate, if not somewhat devoid of an outgoing personality. Herkimer is one of the places I look forward to visiting while I'm in Seattle. The espresso is great and the baristas consistently make excellent drinks. I've been here a dozen or so times now and have yet to be served anything but excellent cappuccinos. They've got a decent selection of pastries. I like the biscotti a lot and I've tried, and been impressed with, the muffins and scones. They tend to be a little picked over by noon (which is the earliest I'm capable of getting there while on vacation), but I'm always able to find something that looks good. There's always plenty of seating available in the lobby and the environment is suitable for studying. I tend to spend a couple hours there at a time and find it very comfortable. I don't really understand the complaining about them being cash only. It can be a little inconvenient but I understand the reasoning and it wouldn't hurt you to keep a few dollars on your person at all times. If coffee/espresso is a ritual for you and you're incapable of planning ahead enough to pick up cash from an ATM the problem is yours, not theirs. Ken's across the street offers cash back on purchases if you're really desperate and there are plenty of other coffee shops in the area. Just came back with cash next time... read more

I came in this afternoon around one fifteen. I've been served Herkimer dozens of times, usually at Analog on the hill, or Anchored Ship on Ballard. I love the blend, and decided to make a pilgrimage to the roastery. I asked the barista if they ever have single-origin offerings on espresso, to which I received a diatribe on how single-origins are nearly impossible to dial in correctly, and that their blend is far superior to any single-origin espresso anyway. It sounded like an excuse to me, and I found it especially bizarre being a barista at a single-origin coffee shop with a comparable espresso blend. To be fair, the Herkimer blend is incredible, especially in equal parts milk - macchiato style. But the attitude and arrogance of a barista left a bad taste in my mouth before I even received my drink. She told me that single-origin espresso is a non-worthwhile experience because they would need to charge three times the price for s.o., in order to keep with bean costs. My macchiato was in fact excellently paired with well-streamed milk, great crema, and a top-notch four-leafed tulip. But as I was told by my coffee trainer- "a good barista doesn't make excuses, they just make great coffee, no matter the circumstance" (s.o. included). I could see this barista working hard on my drink, and really taking pride in their labor, but this should not be the attitude of a roastery on the cutting edge of excellent coffee. I detoured here once a few weeks ago, and I keep detouring here at least weekly. This place is not in my neighborhood, and only by a stretch is it "on my way" to something I'm going to or from. However, the consistent, enthusiastic customer service and drinks, as well as the apparent happy returning neighborhood customers, has me coming back. They also have an impressive, well-stocked pastry case, and in no small part, that keeps me coming back as well. The croissants they carry are enormous and delicious, perfect for when you just need butter disguised as bread. I really can't express enough how pleased I am every time I come in here. This past time, I stopped in and bought a bag of beans. No problem! I'll be coming back again, for sure. Now I need to convince a friend to move nearby so I have a greater excuse to visit! read more

I used to go to this place everyday, but I just don't carry cash on me often enough. It gets super annoying to have to scrounge up cash in the morning before your cup of joe. I personally am not functioning on all cylinders until my coffee gets injected. That said.. they have the best coffee in Seattle. I come here often to meet over coffee. The space is nice and works well for its small size. The coffee is always good the staff is welcoming and knows what they are doing. There are outlets if you need to plug in a laptop and it's not too difficult to come, have a private conversation and hear the person you're meeting with. read more
