Stopped in here before the Ballard Farmer's Market. I grabbed an iced vanilla latte with oat milk. It was good! The shop itself is really nice too. They have beautiful ceramics for sale. A cute cafe, though the seating isn't the most comfortable. While ordering, I noticed that most people were getting their coffee to go rather than sitting in. Personally, I love having my coffee in a mug that cozy cafe feeling is why I enjoy visiting places like this. I ordered a latte, and it was perfectly strong, just the way I like it. The coffee to milk ratio was spot on and exactly how I enjoy my latte. The staff was very friendly. We arrived around 2 pm on Saturday., and although the cafe closes at 3, we didn't leave until about 3:10 pm. The staff was patient and didn't rush or pressure us at all. Really great drinks! This is a place to take your espresso snobs and enthusiasts! They do also have bakery that was quite delicious too. The line was long on a Sunday during the farmers market but it was worth it. No dogs are allowed inside (aside from service animals) but they do have a water bowl just outside the door. How I heard of this place: Friends were heading over after brunch and I thought I'd join in to try their seasonal, housemade carrot cake syrup. Type of cuisine: Coffee shop with a limited espresso menu and a few loose leaf tea selections. Ambiance: Small and tucked in, the space - formerly a plant shop - is in a corner nook of the building with windows along the angled front. The interior is warm amidst the white tiles and Scandanavian-inspired natural minimalism. It's quiet and patrons are either working on laptops or sipping their beverages in silence with their tablemates. A pillowed bench against one wall, with chairs opposite the small tables is available for seating, which is extremely sparse. There is an air of pretension from the moment you step inside, as well as in the eyes and body language of the patrons. The one barista we had the pleasure of being greeted by, broke that unwelcoming glare and smiled softly, offering us mini samples of the syrup before we dropped big money on a beverage. No off-menu requests or substitutions. Note: The establishment seems to be dog-friendly, as those that are not service animals are being traipsed around, through the line, awaiting pick-up, etc. If you're sensitive to dogs, you may wish to avoid this spot. What I ordered: The seasonal carrot cake syrup (made with their carrot tea, steeped into a simple syrup) in a 12-ounce latte. What I loved: The soft sweetness of the syrup, perfect for a cold autumn morning, and the smoothness of the espresso. I went to Homage for the first time this past Sunday after my husband went last week and recommended it. The location towards the end of Ballard Ave is great, as there are no other coffee shops on the southern end of Ballard Ave. The shop is very aesthetic, from the beautiful decorations to choices of mugs and plates. I love the pop of color used for the dishes in contrast to the white/black coloring of the store. I ordered a matcha latte, my husband ordered a latte, and my friend ordered an iced matcha latte. We all thoroughly enjoyed our drinks and were able to snag a table! The baked goods looked good as well, and I hear they may be from SeaWolf (amazing, if so)?? I would note that Homage was VERY busy and we waited in line for close to 20 minutes before making it to the front. After we ordered, the drinks came out relatively quickly. When my husband went mid-week there was no line and plenty of seating. So, probably good to avoid farmer's market Sundays or plan to wait in line! First impression: Solid. Ballard in general sets an above average bar for coffee and tea in my opinion. There are a number of artisan (read "millennial bougie") shops in the area, so I had high expectations for Homage. For my first stop in? I was impressed. The menu is simple without being basic. The focus appears to be on delivering great coffee and matcha without unnecessary frills. If there are extras, like the delightful vanilla strawberry syrup I added to my matcha latte, it's done well, with real ingredients. It's not gimmicky or artificial. Service was also intentional and not rushed. When it was my turn to order, I felt like the owner and barista one-man-show (my guess) was present and not at all phased by the growing line behind me. The only thing that would make this spot *perfect* is more seating, because the vibes just scream: Slow down. Stay awhile. Enjoy and linger. I was definitely jealous of the few groups who snagged a seat, delightfully engaged with good company. My oat chocolate cookie with sea salt was also good, but *too* oat-y if that makes sense? This new coffee shop has taken the place of the root coffee shop. They have made some needed changes such as adding more seating which is super welcomed, now there's the ability to sit in and chat. The specialty drinks aren't necessarily that special, it was a simple take on a strawberry syrup that I've seen in most coffee shops. It's safe to say that I wouldn't come here because I'm craving their coffee. However, I WOULD come back because I'm craving their massive oat cookie. I love that cookie. Homage Coffee House took over the former Root location. I'm glad the indie spot continues on...plentiful natural light, wonderful aesthetic with plants, ceramics, and books. Welcoming owner, SeaWolf baked goods, savored a well crafted mocha, while soaking in unique vibe onsite. Great overhead playlist too during this visit (1/22/25). There's outdoor sidewalk seating, but on this chilly winter afternoon really glad for their indoor perimeter seating. Thankfully, not overly crowded like some indie cafes further down Ballard Ave NW. On the list of my top 5 coffee shops in Seattle (from a barista). Solid offerings from a multi-roaster model. I had the chance to try one of their speciality lattes too - the homemade syrup was on point and the flavors really came through rather than just tasting overly sweet. This shop is the perfect example of what we need more of in Seattle. They serve some of the best medium-light roast coffees in the world from roasters including Sey, Ilse and La Cabra. Those coffees are meticulously dialed in each day by one of the owners, Clinton, to ensure each extraction throughout the day is perfect, and if you get their drinks to consume in the cafe they're served in ceramics made by the other owner, Rachel. The shop is modern and bright without feeling trendy and dull, and has extra seating the owners added to the shop making it feel more inviting and encouraging to stay. They serve pastries from Sea Wolf made fresh everyday, which just happens to be one of my favorite Seattle bakeries. It's like someone looked at a 1975 Betty Crocker cookbook and said, "But what if it was coffee?" Their signature "Stroganoff Sunrise" blend features notes of mushroom, sour cream, and what they swear is ethically sourced egg noodle essence. The mouthfeel is exactly what you'd expect if your grandmother's favorite casserole achieved liquid form and went to barista school. It's served in a vintage Corningware cup, because AUTHENTICITY MATTERS. The way they extract the essence of beef stroganoff through their custom-modified Chemex (which they've dubbed "The Stroganator") is nothing short of revolutionary. A great little cafe at the end of the main street! Coffee is great, I tried a vanilla latte ($7) and it was smooth and not sweet at all. Their chocolate oat cookie is also delicious ($5-6). They don't have wifi, so it isn't a great place to do work, but good for a quick coffee run or to sit and chat. They seemed dog friendly for ordering, but not sure for sitting inside. Look, I get it, coffee isn't a one-size-fits-all beverage. There are espresso drinks like Americano, Cappuccino, Doppio, et al. And then there's roasted coffee, in various roast levels. How are they presented? How about flat bottom drip, pour over, french press, chemex, or aero press to name a few. And the roasts? Everything from light, medium to dark. And for the most part, the focus remains on light and medium roasts, with few dark roast coffees. Unfortunately, I fall into the category of dark (or sometimes called bold) roast coffee preference, which means I'm often leaving coffee shops instead of sitting down with a cup. That doesn't mean I don't believe a coffee shop can provide more than coffee options. They are also facilitators of inspiration, relaxation, or a neutral moderator of conversations. So, how I review this business is less about the ambience and more about customer service and options. +1 Ambience. Neutral tones, minimalistic seating, good lighting. +1. Options. Numerous presentation options, including espresso and pour over, pastries, et al. +1. Friendliness. The staff are informed and provide thorough explanations for their coffee. +1. Hours. They are often open for breakfast until late lunch. Some might dislike their hours concluding mid-afternoon, though. -1. Customer Service. Over the course of several visits, it is clear they are focused on roasts which are accessible for a larger audience. Background. On three separate occasions, I've walked into this cafe with the goal of potentially making this my preferred spot for writing and people watching. Each time, I've reviewed the pour over options, all equitably priced, but nothing in my personal wheelhouse. Think notes of floral, citrus, or berries. Each time, I would inquire about other options, only to be offered an espresso or Americano. And I can't fault them for trying to mediate solutions. Each time, I would leave empty-handed but with the promise from the barista that bold/darker options occasionally occur. This last visit, I reviewed the pour over options, after months since my last visit. Again, the options are more floral, berry, or citrus. Again, I look at the other options, before suggesting a pour over of the espresso roast. As they have priced their coffee grinds out, the best they offered was an Americano of the espresso roast. Well-meaning, but this was not what I was looking for. So, I left. I want to be clear, this coffee shop has repeatedly promised to update their roasts. However, I have reservations about this cafe, regarding their commitment beyond more accessible coffee roasts than what I'm looking for. So, I will probably hold off for six-months to a year before re-visiting. Finally, a few things would help people like me avoid walking out empty-handed. 1. Online menu. Provide a roast breakdown on your website or on social media. It would go far to let people know, like me, whether a 15 minute drive is worth taking. 2. Accommodations. This is a grey area. But, it would be nice for staff to be open to requests and price them accordingly. Example, if I ask for an espresso roast as a pour over, just price it out. Or, if this was a grind issue and your pre-ground, then let them know this. 3. Referrals. The barista at this location demonstrates clear knowledge of their roasts and the roasters. How about providing referrals to other businesses that might be a better fit. It's old school, but would go far to let the customer know you genuinely recognize their unique tastes. Conclusion. I believe this is a worth-while cafe to spend time in. However, for me, I don't feel this is a good fit for the time being. Time will tell. As always, your individual experience will vary. read more

I really wanted to like this place-- it's always busy with a long line and has a nice vibe--but unfortunately my experience today was really disappointing. My boyfriend and I decided to brave the lines this morning while enjoying the farmers market, and I ordered a matcha latte with oat milk (I'm lactose intolerant and always specify alternative milk clearly), but the drink I was given was made with regular milk. I didn't realize it until it was too late, and I've been sick all day as a result. It's frustrating that such an important detail was overlooked, especially at a popular and well-regarded café where you'd expect more attention to dietary needs regardless of how busy they might be. On top of that, the drinks themselves weren't anything special--flat flavors and not particularly well made (my boyfriend ordered a cold brew, and wasn't impressed.)
