This bar's a bit strange. You are totally in LoDo & would never know it, so for that I give props-I am so not a LoDo nightlife fan. I am however a fan of cheap drinks and local bands-so Herb's is the perfect combo of both. I would give more stars, but the setup is just too odd for me. The stage is not at the end of the bar, it's along side of a wall, so it's like the bands are playing in a hallway. I felt totally squished in. I was practically dancing on the people who were just randomly seated right behind me. Very narrow & very cramped. The wall opposite of the band was covered in mirrors-like at a dance studio. I don't know, just kinda weird. Just as the dance floor/seating area was crowded, so was the bar area. Again, very narrow with booths on 1 side, and the bar on the other. It's difficult to manuver, especially after a few cocktails. The bar tender that night was nice, but the cocktail waitresses were clearly intolerant of the level of drunkenness of me and my friends, um, is this not a bar?! That is just to me, so incredibly rude. You work in a bar downtown on a weekend night...what are you expecting?! Just as the dance floor/seating area was crowded, so was the bar area. I was just having fun and drinking and one of the bouncers got upset with me and hit me in the face and pushed me to the floor. I am a 21 year old girl, and this bouncer was a man much larger than me. I had a really nice time at Herb's last night. I have been here a couple times before and really enjoyed myself. Last night was no different. I came to "hang" with a few of my friends who are musicians and play there often. The bar service is always great. I got a whiskey with a splash of ginger. I wasn't looking for anything fancy. Sometimes you just need a plain Jamison and ginger, ya know. All my friends and I were served quickly. The drinks are strong and the price is right. I always love the music played here. I mean I may be a little biased because my friends are the musicians but they are a talented bunch. You can hear live music every day of the week. The schedule changes but it's always a good mix of Jazz, Blues, or Rock. We are very lucky with the level of talent we have in Denver. I saw on a previous review that there is karaoke one night. I didn't know they did karaoke there. I will have to come back for that. They have a small stage in the back and TV's towards the front. There was hockey game going on so we had the sports side on one half of the bar and the musicians on the other side. It made for an interesting mix but I can't complain. Last night was the first time I went out on the patio in the back. It's a nice size patio with decent tables and seating. And you can bring your dog back there. The weather was gorgeous so we chilled outside for a bit. I had a draft beer for my second drink. I like their selection of beers. The only reason why I didn't rate this dive 5 stars is because every time I've gone there's always this weird smell in there. It changes every time as to what the smell is but it's not a good one. I agree with Aimee's assessment in the fact that they have a lot of options for music. Any style of music could be playing ( rock, rap, blues, dance, etc.) here. Usually someone is up dancing and it is sometimes piped in or live - like the few times I have been here. It is a Sunday night and we are here to hear a blurs/jazz band named Nuskool. Friendly bartenders and they want everyone to enjoy themselves. They escort the overly drunk / obnoxious sort out of the door. So you may decide it is a "dive" bar but you should venture in anyway for the safe confines and musically inclined individuals will be sure to find a band of their tastes. read more

This place was great. We walked in and the place looked a lil too packed tbh. We were thinking about dipping out, but its a good thing we stayed. A lot of great and friendly people. The atmosphere was perfect. Yeah on the dance floor it was definitely crowded and to get the bathrooms you gotta pass thru it. But still the place was great. The back patio was also nice. Being able to step out of the crowd for a sec. But the Live music was good. The drinks were cheap and strong. I've been coming to Herb's for years and have been seeing a steady increase in traffic to definitely one of my favorites in Lodo. I'm by no means, your usual lodo goof so me to even be down in this neck of the woods is few and far between but when I do I always hit up Herb's. . The dark atmosphere typically is great respite from the loud and craziness of all the surrounding bars and they usually have some pretty cheap drinks for the area. This along with a sweet little patio and usually a fair amount of room makes this a must stop. As I said, they have been getting increasingly popular so beware it might be a mad house as it was on opening day. For some reason though I still was easily able to get a drink and had a great time and will be back. I love this place and recommend anyone to hit them up read more

Herb's. Oh Herb's. Strong drinks and great music. Heaven on earth (if your idea of heaven has plenty of sin). B3 night is a must for any fans of the funkily delicious timbres of the Hammond Organ. Vlod (little Russian dude with glasses) is as talented as he is humble. Incredible music; he lays down grooves that would make Jimmy Smith proud. Eugene's blues jam also makes for a great time every time. Friendly bartenders, eccentric crowd and plenty of character. Be warned: if it's a first date or business meeting over cocktails... well, why are you heading to a dive bar? Herb's is a dive bar and with Hideout in the name you should steer clear if you're looking for a classy joint. As many others have mentioned, it's a bit run down but that seems to allow the sheer caliber of talent that frequents Herb's to shine brighter. If Herb's was a person it would definitely be Stifler's Mom from American Pie: dirty and classy at the same time. If what you want is to hear fantastic sounds, meet interesting people and get drunk for cheap than Herb's is the place to be. read more

This place just gets better and better. The music varies from very good to off-the-hook fantastic. Tonight they had a great band doing what I would call techno-funk. Most Wednesday is a blues jam. The professional friendly service is the best in Denver and the crowd is cool because, most importantly, I am often there, but its riddled with hotties, hipsters, and fun dogs of all breeds. read more

I will attempt to conceive my first child here one day. Then I will name the child Herb, unless it is a boy in which case it'll be Hideout. I don't want to give people the wrong idea about my daughter. As soon as you roll into this joint from the front door the music rolls over you in a wave. The front bar is tunnel shaped and funnels the tunes right at your face as you stroll the length of the bar. The lights are dim and dirty and the drinks are cheap but well-poured. Good luck getting a booth next to the bar but I recommend heading toward the stage anyway, which is surrounded by dancing people and rickety chairs. If it isn't too cold out you can head to the back patio for a smoke and maybe a dog if the grill is running. The spicy dogs are delicious, but respect them. There is all kinds of music played at this venue but Herb's shines when the blues are played. The clientele shifts a bit, the whiskey goes down easier and the surreal may occur at any moment. One night as I sat listening (and singing along - the music is loud no one is going to hear you) to an amazing and unknown blues band crank the greats, I was whipped out of my chair by an older black woman in a silk dress named Henrietta (I found out her name later when I bought her a scotch) and spun around the dance floor to T-Bone Walker's "I Got a Break, Baby". Those moments are what I live for. Whenever I need to hear the blues I go to Herb's; when I leave I feel no pain. read more

Awesome place with good vibes and reasonable drink prices. They had a live band playing with a good variety of music playing between sets I also got some great service from one of the owners who was working the bar. The place also has a nice patio area to chill out. It seemed like a fairly popular spot, got pretty crowded by midnight. One thing I did frown upon was the way security handled a fight that occurred on the patio. A guy got clocked in the face for no apparent reason and was left with a fairly bloody eyebrow. Security kicked this guy out and did not even remove the dude who threw the punch. They seemed a little careless to me. Lost a star in the ratings for that one Other than that it seems like an awesome spot with great music and vibes to go around. Had a great time visiting. read more

Talk about a big bang for your buck! Herbs Hideout is the perfect place to do just that - hide from all the douchebags that have begun to frequent this neighborhood. I went in after spending the day at Oktoberfest. They refilled our large steins for $5 and we aren't talking Butt (I mean) Bud Light...quality beer for cheap! Bobby behind the bar was ever so helpful and polite. I'm a big fan of monstrous advertising so the bright HERB'S light on the back outdoor wall is awesome! The patio itself offered plenty of room and a back alley entrance (for when you need to make a quick exit). While I have not been here to see the live music the fact that it is offered makes this bar a do not miss! read more

I went there to hear my friend's band. They are amazing!!! The bar itself has a great feel...from loud dance / seating area right in front of the stage to the semi-quieter bar area with booths. The bouncers were fantastic and the bartenders were nice. Drinks were pretty reasonable. My frustration this night was...the place was PACKED! and there were 2 bartenders. HELLO!!! If you're looking for a break from the lodo bar scene where people are too busy oogling or primping, this is a great spot to stop into. Personally, I liked it more a few years ago, when the street was a little edgier and the crowd a bit more eclectic, but it's still a solid place to go for a respite from the scenesters. If you like R&B, it's welcome spot - there is a constant flow of weekend booking from regulars like Laura Newman and AOA to keep you grooving while enjoying the retro blue lit bar. It's got a handy back entrance/exit that backs to the parking lot, with a decent outside patio. The main bar is divided into two sections - a classic retro style bar and a connected room where the band plays with tables and chairs. Nothing fancy, and sometimes that is just what the night calls for. Give me this over the lodo strip any day. But hey, I have grey temples...It's of the same vein as El Chaputapec, but has more more room to breathe and a better bar, IMHO. read more

I went to see Live music at Herbs. The Moses Jones Band was performing that night. Awesome band. But more about Herbs. The Cheesy Puffs they have on the bar i thought was hilarious. Everyone who works on the staff was friendly. The Bartenders to the waitress' and the Doormen. The Dance floor could be a lil bigger it was kind of cramped with everyone dancing. The drinks were reasonably priced for downtown.Hell the drinks were cheap. Its packed full of energy and me myself i prefer The Thick women and they were out in full force there. And approachable to dance with and have a good time. The 5 dollar cover is cheap as hell compared to other places downtown. Chairs and tables are on the outside patio to mingle on as well when you work up a sweat inside. I am a fan of Herbs now and will be back for music or Sporting Events its a fun bar all around. read more

There is no pretense at the Herb's, the crowd is there for the music not to be seen or pose for some imaginary camera.
