"Tales of Trails and Tea Houses" April - September, 2022 My new theme for some of my yelp reviews for this year! My husband and I are planning on exploring a new trail and a new tea house for our monthly dates for the 6 warmer months of this year! :) On June 16th of this year, my husband and I wandered in to Herban Wellness. We felt welcome and attended to. We're impressed that they make their own teas, so the teas here are very unique. They have a lot of one-of-a-kind teas to choose from. They have a great variety of herbs and other natural care products as well. I chose the "Healthy Skin" tea to purchase, and I also picked up some local honey that was made in Maple Valley, WA. The "Healthy Skin" tea tasted interesting - woody, bitter, and earthy. It didn't taste bad at all, but I felt like it was maybe made with health benefits as its primary purpose, and taste maybe was secondary. I would drink it again, but I won't be raving about the flavor. However, the honey was delicious. I also picked up some dried marshmallow root pieces as well, to make marshmallow root tea. I used to visit a different herb place to source my marshmallow root when we lived in Seattle, so it's nice to find this place that is located pretty close to our new house on the East Side. I felt a bit overwhelmed while I was in there, but in a good way. There is a lot to choose from in a somewhat small space, and I kept seeing things that looked really interesting! Visiting this business was a good experience for my husband and I.

What a wonderful health and wellness shop in downtown Kirkland with the friendliest and most knowledgeable staff. I finally visited Herban Wellness, as I've seen it so many times whenever I'm in Kirkland and was curious about it. I have seasonal allergies, which at times, gets severe. I hate having to take an allergy pill everyday, which can't be good for the amount of toxins I put in my body. But at Herban Wellness they have all-natural products that helps cure allergies and beyond. I'm open to any kind of remedy at this point, especially if it can be done naturally. For allergies, they do have allergy pills you can take, in addition to medicinal tea, sinus sprays, essential oils, etc... The staff are super knowledgeable here. They know their stuff and offer advice on what to take with plenty of options, without trying to push you to buy anything. Even if you're curious about a product, I recommend asking the staff. I learned a lot about allergy products and home remedies, just in my time at Herban Wellness, all thanks to the friendly staff here. In addition to allergy treatment, they have products for whatever ails you. I like the range of products in various forms for helping cure a symptom or illness. The shop is small, but they carry enough items for you to check out. What's also really cool is that they can customize a treatment for you here; all you need to do is take a brief quiz about yourself, to help figure out what you're seeking. I recommend for anyone trying to find alternative medicines to visit Herban Wellness, even just to learn. Great business in downtown Kirkland.

Fix whatever ails you! Remedies galore. Great quality.

Problem solved. The tinctures available in Herban Wellness will make your day. Literally, there is one for whatever ails you: headaches, sleeping, energy, hangover, energy, immunity. If you don't know what you need- even better. The staff, including Katya of course, is so helpful and knowledgable. I bought Bee Pollen and have been adding it to my protein shakes. Check them out!

The sign outside states they source their chocolate from Peru, which immediately intrigued me. I recently tried a single origin Valrhona chocolate from Peru, which I did not enjoy. I found the Illanka to be musty, almost like wet hair, making it quite unpleasant to eat. A local chocolate shop going bean-to-bar was an excellent chance to give the cocoa beans from this country another try. Fortunato offers chocolate they advertise as being from the world's rarest cocoa tree - from the original Nacional cacao strain, which was thought to be extinct until the founders did genetic testing on some trees in Peru in 2009*. Interesting story, but is the chocolate any good? 68% Dark Chocolate Mini Squares 7oz Bag ($12.99) - This is clearly high quality chocolate given that no emulsifiers are in the ingredient list. I tastes a bit tannic, like wine, to start which then goes to a sweet dried red fruit finish. It has a good snappy quality, but there's a bit of a chalky consistency probably due to lack of emulsifier. One piece had a tiny shell-like crunchy bit inside, perhaps contamination from cocoa husk? I only found this in a single square, so I'm not entirely sure what it is. (4/5) Unlike other bean to bar manufacturers in and around Seattle, I hadn't heard of Fortunado before and ended up doing some more research. Apparently until 2020, the chocolate was only available for purchase via wholesale to restaurant and chocolatiers. They only launched their retail shop for regular consumers in 2021. The chocolate Fortunado sells is similar in price to other high quality bean-to-bar manufacturers around the area. I found the chocolate to be a little too chalky for my tastes, so I wonder if it's better to be used in baking or in confections. *Note: Another brand, To'ak, which I had actually heard of before, seems to have made a similar discovery of Nacional in Ecuador sometime after 2013. To'ak has way better marketing that makes it seem like they revived the Nacional cocoa.

My favorite dishes are the PHAD SEE EIW with chicken ($16.25) and the THAI GRILLED BEEF SALAD (cooked medium) ($20.50). The PHAD SEE EIW has the perfect sauce balance of sweet and savory flavors and comes with broccoli and carrot. The noodles are super long and wide so you know they are fresh and not from the box. The THAI GRILLED BEEF SALAD definitely has a kick to it. This dish comes with raw cucumbers, carrots, onions, and basil and is served in a tangy and umami fish sauce vinegar mix. The beef is extremely tasty, tender, and well-marinated. This past visit, my friends and I also tried two new dishes that I've never had at Isarn before- their CHIANG MAI NOODLES (aka Khao Soi) ($17.25) and the MINCED LAMB WITH THAI BASIL ($16.50). The CHIANG MAI NOODLES were beautifully presented with a nest of crunchy egg noodles on top of a creamy yellow curry with soft egg noodles underneath. It was served with pickled mustard cabbage and onions for extra punch of flavor. The MINCED LAMB WITH THAI BASIL reminded me of Vietnamese larb. However, this dish was more savory and less tangy than larb and the basil really shined through. It is quite oily though so make sure to enjoy it with a side of JASMINE RICE ($2.75). Portions are generous for all dishes and I always leave with leftovers. The atmosphere is modern, clean, and trendy. It's a great place for catching up with friends and not too loud. I will say the restaurant is a bit on the darker side, but that's just how they set the ambiance. Service was good and we got our food promptly within 15-20 minutes after ordering. It took a bit of time to waive the waiter down for to-go boxes, but they were attentive otherwise. Note that Isarn doesn't take reservations and it's street parking only. However, they have a waiting list kiosk inside the restaurant and so if they're busy, you can sign up for notifications and walk around the downtown Kirkland shops while you're waiting. Luckily, we just got the next one available, but felt like a needlessly stressful experience. Jumbo Firecracker Prawns (4.25/5): Spring rolls and shrimp had a baby. Crunchy outside with tender shrimp and sweet chili sauce - a perfect appetizer to share. Isarn Fried Rice (4.25/5): A fried rice unlike any other. Was my personal favorite dish of the night. The rice kernels were separated into individual grains and coated in grease in the best way possible. I'm a kale hater, but the combination with salted eggs and the purposefully chewy fried steak pieces was just super delicious! Northern Style Sweet Curry (3.75/5): The curry itself is fantastic: super balanced between savory, fragrant, and sweet. The steak chunks unfortunately were just a bit overcooked and chewy. Durian Sticky Rice (4.25/5): Sticky rice has a super satisfying chew and I appreciated that the sauce wasn't overly sweet. Durian itself was sweet and creamy with just a touch funk. If you've never had durian before, this is a fantastic intro.
