The Heorot is worth the 30-45 minute drive from my house. Once or twice a quarter my friend (Ball State Grads) and I head to Muncie to have a pizza and an afternoon beer or 4 at the Heorot. The selection on tap and in bottles is a rotating experience every time we go. Never fear they have old standbys as well. Apparently they used to have some sort of drinking club when my friends were in college (in the round the world of beers type style). The staff is great and is very helpful in selecting a new beer to try. If you are within 2 hours of Muncie, it's worth a stop in. Make sure you grab a pizza. Worth the trip alone. read more

We went for the first time last night and were so glad we did. I wanted Zombie Killer and the Heorot is the only place I could find that stocks it. Their beer menu is huge, everyone should be able to find something they like. We also ordered a pizza with pepperoni, green peppers, and onions which cost a ridiculously low $5.50 as their pizza was on sale. It wasn't the best pizza I've had, but it was very good and hit the spot. I highly recommend trying the Heorot, you'll be happy you did. read more

I've probably been to the Heorot 2 dozen times over the last couple years and it's my go-to bar when I go out (which isn't much anymore). What keeps me coming back? Cheap, GOOD beer and a massive variety of it. This is the type of place to rub shoulders with all kinds of people.... old Muncie folk, metal heads, aspiring hipsters, bro-ish BSU dudes... everyone. It's the place to drink a ton of beers for the sake of trying them, eat a couple cheap pizzas, cash out at under $20 bucks and be glad you did it. Service has kind of gone down recently, but if you go often you'll pick up who are the better bartenders. No matter who's pulling the taps, everyone will help you seek what you're looking for if you're kind and seem to know what you're talking about. read more

A mainstay of downtown Muncie culture, this bar was the center of the social universe during my time at Ball State University. I used to play live jazz here, I drank a lot of amazing beers here, and I made life-changing friendships here. With the opening of the Fickle Peach just down the street, I understand many of the faces have changed on both sides of the bar, but I will NEVER forget this place. Great selection of beers and unique ambiance with the medieval flavor. Decent bar food. They used to have a "mission statement," which was a collection of cheap domestic cans skewered on a sword which was hung on a set of antlers. If you want Budweiser, Miller, Coors, Natty Ice and the like, go somewhere else because they won't serve it! If you want Chimay Cing Cents, La Fin du Monde, La Trappe, Moretti, Sammy Smith's, Bell's Two Hearted Ale (oh, I miss that one!) or the ever popular Lindeman's Framboise on tap, this is where you go. I haven't been there in at least five years but they used to have around 40 selections on tap and 150+ in bottles. I spent way, way, WAY too much time in this place! read more

Our favorite bar hands down. Always something unique to try. The menu is pages long, and changes every week. They have a house brewed mead that tastes like the caramel apple suckers you buy for Halloween. They also offer the perfect variety of drunk foods to sober up on. The atmosphere is one of a kind. If you love craft beer, this place is for you. The decor is a bit bizarre but very entertaining to discuss with friends. The most important part of a craft beer bar is the beer and this delivers big time. They hand you a printout with probably 400 beers and they are some of the best beers in the country. The atmosphere is of a historic viking feel, and is very inviting. Great location being downtown on walnut st. The staff is everything you would want, well educated on all their beer and attentive. The staff knowing the beer is big because this place has over 100 options at any given time. I go here for nite drinks and occasionally food. The Heorot is famous, at least according to a beer drinker's list of places to go in the Midwest. Stan, is an amazing owner, he even has his own brew he had made. This place is the best to bring a group of friends after a long week at school, hanging out in the old mid-evil tavern style building. They have one of the most extensive beer lists in the Midwest, and you can always try something new. They have great tavern food (pizzas on Friday are always a good deal during happy hour) and they always have seasonal beer on special. On some nights they have live music upstairs and The Heorot is the place to be on nights such as St. Patrick's Day, Halloween, and the locally famed Munciegras. My family went to Heorot this afternoon to celebrate my brother's 31st birthday. Most of the staff was friendly and helpful- the costumers and atmosphere were pleasant as well. One bartender, however, told my brother that he'd drunk his first pint too quickly and cut him off. We stayed for another hour and after my 2nd pint, I was told that I was cut off as well. My mother was there with us, but apparently the bartender felt we needed another parent. We will not be coming to Heorot for our next celebration. read more

This is beer geek heaven! I have never seen this much awesome beer cohabiting anywhere in my life. The decor is right up my alley. A giant serpent crashing through the wall, 60 year old taxidermy animals, dust encrusted Viking/Norse god sculptures, long wooden tables with equally long wooden benches, and perhaps 3 incandescent light bulbs a loft in the celling. The jukebox has a great selection, it's a touch tune rather than a old school style. Cheap pizza that is out in 10 minutes. They know how to keep drunk people happy. The outside smoking are is where you will meet some real friendly folk, like the Bird Man. Just listen for the whistle and you'll find him. Can't wait to go back and throw a dart at the beer menu, listen to some Iron Maiden, and haggle over the price of the dirty boar head. read more

Possibly one of Midwest's best kept secrets and one of the worlds greatest bars ... period. Upon first entry you will have to take a moment to try and locate yourself. Heorot's was dimly lit and empty when we walked in with our dog. We read that it was dog friendly, so we decided to give it a try, even though the writer described it as a dive bar.We had the place and the knowledgeable bartender to ourselves for a while. Dark, cool, clean, and quiet, Heorot's is no dive bar. This pub rates five stars, in our opinion. The menu boasts five pages of beer, lager, and ale, some of which they brew at their own brewery. At 36-40 listings a page, that's nearly 200 to chose from. They also make some of their own mead. They have 10 choices, starting at $9 a glass and varying in alcohol content. Our dog was treated to dog biscuits while we ate snacks and spicy shrimp (from Valhalla's). Other customers came in, some with dogs, and drank quietly with their friends. Dive bar? Not a chance. Like their crafted drinks, this place is top notch. read more

I have many fond memories of the Heorot from my days as an undergrad student at Ball State University. Some of the other reviewers have hit the nail on the head. It is a great place in mid-sized Indiana town to find a nice selection of beer. To my knowledge (at least this was the case when I was in Muncie), the bar isn't smoke free. You will leave feeling as if you have lung cancer from second hand smoke, but the beers were vast...at least for an Indiana bar. If I am ever back in Muncie, I will definitely hit this place back up. read more

Where to start? I started out moving to Muncie by going to Savage's Ale house and left thinking their draft list was great. I got a Yelp just to leave a review for this place. It was that good. I went in yesterday (Friday), early afternoon. There was a guy and gal behind the bar, I'm thinking maybe the couple that owns the place. Either way, helped me pick out a beer, had the BEST suggestions for my flavor palate. Even though it was busy she made time to talk to each customer. He appeared to be mostly cooking, but after a "pizza rush" (I saw him bring out at least 10 pizzas in a half hour time span) came out from the kitchen (which is very small) to behind the bar and interacted with customers as well. It was really fun and a nice break from most establishments to see the people behind the bar having fun with each other, their customers, and seem to genuinely want to be there doing that. Very welcoming. The bartender informed me that they have over 350 beers at all times, rotating, with almost 70 draft lines! Everything was cheap, with almost 20 drafts 2.75 or less! Pizza was only $2, but I'm told that's a special Friday deal. I had three beers and a pizza and cashed out under $10. I took a menu home with me, but you have to go in to even believe what all is available. They have something to suit everyone. Ask for recommendations, they were spot on. She informed me they don't do samples, but I could "build my own flight" and she'd walk me through each one if I decided I want to do that. Don't be intimidated. . it is kind of a dive, but everything was phenomenal. I can see myself being here at least once a week and really enjoying myself every Friday. I will for sure be back next week, the service was phenomenal, the selection was outstanding, and for $2 you can't beat the pizza. read more

Forget the smoke and all the decor; if you want true craft beers and a staff that has no equal, you have GOT to visit.
