I was expecting to have an amazing experience celebrating my friends 21st birthday with beers and pizza but was confronted by the crusty old bag of a lady bartender telling us we didn't tip enough and was to never come back due to how cheap this elderly women is. Customer Service at this establishment is an absolute joke and not friendly towards customers. Guinness, distributes, 20 ounce Guinness glasses. The establishment has the 20 ounce Guinness glasses . The bartender says he can't sell the Guinness in the 20 ounce glasses because he would be giving me four more ounces than what comes in their bar glass . I explained to him I don't mind paying more and that's why Guinness distributes the 20 ounce glasses is for a proper pour. I was dismissed with the wave of the hand. I understand this is a college town and perhaps they have to deal with certain issues. I have 11 other guys who are going to be in town for three days and five of them drink Guinness. Would be a loss of business considering they do have food and you're gonna have six people drinking multiple pints Guinness. Not sure if the young man was the owner, but perhaps they ought to rethink their strategy with dealing with customers and how they pour a proper pint. read more

One complaint: They turned the lights on. The Heorot is the place to be in Muncie. It's the best bar, by far, for beer and conversation. I would go here at least a few times a week while in College. Any time I am in Muncie, I visit the Heorot. It was the only place that served my German beer, on tap, and at cost. The prices could not be beat. The prices still remain lower than ANY place I have ever been to in the US. They have a little note-card system for tracking the number of unique beers you've had. I'm happy to say some friends and I have our little golden name plates on the bar. An achievement worth more than our degrees (and still cheaper). When you saw the dragon's breathe you knew it was time to go home. This pub brought me right back to the back alley vibes of some of the oldest haunts from my time in Germany. I can't say enough good things. I know the old guard has moved on, and Guardian has taken over. I think the best thing they did was keep much the same. For anyone who has sat on the old church pews for years, I'm sure keeping things the same is exactly what they want. I love coming in and hearing a mix of Black Metal from an obscure group to the next song being Taylor Swift and everybody being on board with both. The memories made will always be part of my time in Muncie, both good and bad. The Heorot was there for both. Where else could you get a pitcher of Franziskaner for $11, hold the glass, and not be judged. Prost! read more

Guessing this is a local hangout by the many stares we received walking in the door. Mid-evil themed, old school bar with an interesting vibe. We seated ourselves in the back next to an ancient looking piano. Bartender/waitress greeted us and handed us drink menus, telling us "we don't have a menu for food because we only serve pizza...and we currently have limited toppings" (listing what I would say are the least popular toppings on any pizza). So we decided to simply have a round of drinks. A friendly old local (and bar fly) who just might've been there all day appeared at our table and asked if we minded if he played the piano. He had a schtick he'd obviously used many times before, but it was charming and he could in fact tickle the ivory rather well. I really enjoyed this Irish Pub. Music wasn't playing but the bartender offered to play music if we wanted. She suggested beers, food, and mixed drinks. Also allowed me to try substitutions at no extra cost. Tonight there was Bruce's Famous Pizza available and it did not disappoint. We tried both the thin crust and Detroit Deep dish. The next night we were hoping to have a better bartender and experience and he was still there and came at me and my friends even harder and screamed profanities at us, refusing to give us service after his own mistake. My absolute favorite is the Chocolate Raspberry wine which I can never find anywhere else. I have such mixed feelings about the Heorot. Yes, their beer list is riduculous but I was really turned off by the customer service I experienced in my last visit. I went to the Heorot on Monday night before Christmas with 5 friends. The bartenders weren't particularly helpful or friendly but I was advised by a regular that it wasn't their "A team" on staff that night. Obviously, being from San Francisco, the prices were unbelievably cheap which was great. However, I've been to the Heorot before on a few occasions while in town visiting home and had a decent experience. It's good for large groups and super casual so it's a good place to get together with old home friends without running into every single person I know. Once, a bartender told me I was beautiful. I later learned that he is legally blind -_____- Here are some other things about the Heorot that may be of interest: - Beer list is riduclous as you'll read in the other reviews. The Heorot is my favorite place in Muncie to go and I know it would stand up against any beer bar in the state. The bartenders are FANTASTIC. The first time I walked in there, I was overwhelmed by the idea of knowing nothing about beer. They are happy to explain anything to you and will help you find what you like! The Heorot, aside from being Beowulf's mead hall is probably the best beer bar in the Midwest, and almost certainly the best beer bar in Indiana. They have hundreds of different bottles---from all over the world and craft brews from all over the USA. If you want a trappist beer or a gueuze or a micro brew from the West Coast, this is your go-to place. Moreover, they make their own beer and their own mead, which they sell by the growler. (though they always seem to be out of beer) The ambience is medieval mead hall---actually it's 90's nerd interpretation of medieval mead hall. (including a huge wormlike dragone slithering in and out of the walls) The owner once owned the local game shop. But with its long wooden benches and dark corners, this is good place to go to shoot the breeze with old friends. The prices of the beer are also very reasonable. This is a place worth driving to muncie to visit if you really like beer. read more

Superior selection with a good mix of local craft beers and popular craft favorites. I consider the Heorot the best place to try a unique or new brew in Muncie, IN. When the owner is present, you will be well-educated with information on what you and friends are drinking. However, some of the helping staff is not knowledgeable in the slightest. At 23, I am already past the point of drinking in loud environments. I enjoy relaxing in a quiet environment, and fraternizing with fellow bar folk. The Heorot is a great place to do so. Ever been to a place where you feel like you've walked into another world when you enter? That's the feeling you get as you enter Muncie Indiana's Heorot Pub. Muncie is a mid-sized, rust-belt city who, like other similar cities, has seen better days and is struggling to make a comeback in today's world. In the middle of "Middletown USA", in the center of downtown's main drag sits Heorot's pub. When I walked in recently, I thought I was in some bar in remote Alaska. Ornate, stuffed animal heads are mounted on the walls and if you're not seated at the bar on the large wooden barstools that line one side of the long narrow bar, you're at one of the picnic tables that lines the other side. Between the friendly and knowledgeable bartenders, many of whom also look the "rural Alaskan" part, and the clientele, well let's just say you don't feel like "you're in Kansas anymore". But let's face it, we're not here for the atmosphere. We're here for the beer! And let me assure you, THEY HAVE BEER! It seems that every conceivable beer (short of Miller or Bud) can be found at the Heorot. Over 200 I am told. Every imaginable beer can be found here. For the non-beer drinkers, they do have a modest wine selection (and I do mean modest!) and no liquor. This is a beer pub and it's easy to see why Heorot was ranked in the top 5 pubs in Indiana. If you're a connoisseur of fine beer, you just might consider Heorot, "Mecca". Don't expect any frills - there aren't any - and if you can't stand cigarette smoke, you're not going to like this place. It's the only reason I didn't give the place 5 stars. You'll leave smelling like a chimney but you'll certainly leave happy and probably feeling no pain. Definitely check it out next time you happen to wander into Muncie, Indiana! read more

Anytime we go out downtown Muncie we always go into the heorot for a beer. Always a huge selection of beers from all over the world. You have to flip through an extensive list that is sorted by beer type. If you like trying new beers this is the place for you! Prices are some of the best in Muncie. As an out-of-towner, I asked the rental car place and hotel staff to direct me to a great local beer place... they directed me to a place downtown that started with an "S." However, after bonding with my Uber driver for ten minutes, he refused to let me drink there when he knew there was a better option (the ride was officially ended anyhow). Heorot was just around corner, has a plethora of craft beers on tap or bottle AND it is Viking themed. If you're looking for a true, local, special, beer experience with personal attention ... this is the place to be. The pizza was basic but totally hit the spot, but the real shiner here is the down-to-earth atmosphere and PHENOMENAL selection. PS, some one just randomly (or maybe not) started playing "three blind mice" on the piano. I'm hooked. If you want craft beer, come here!!!! read more

If you want cocktails, don't come here. I give it 4 stars because someone has gotta love aka my boyfriend. He states "it's the only bar that has meads and power metal on the jukebox and has a dog every time I come here " Not a fan of gruff bars with poor lighting that doesn't match the atmosphere but it sets it apart from the other bars that try to be in style and hip. I lived in Muncie for an entire year, and I have to say that Heorot may be the only thing I miss about it! But don't let that diminish the message that I really do miss it! Heorot has remained one of my favorite bars of all time. On a road trip through Indy a year or two ago we actually detoured all the way up to Muncie just to stop in. In a town that lacks practically anything original or unique (when I lived there a second Wal-Mart opened up, which was cause for a front-page article in the newspaper and a visit from the mayor. And the high school marching band), Heorot really stands out as a gem. Living in Chicago now, where there are plenty of unique bars and restaurants, I would still say that if Heorot was around the corner it would still be one of my first places to visit. Need I say beer? They have like 50 or something draft beers (and, at least when I was there, sprechers rootbeer) and like a million bottled options. Good. Cheap. Really cheap! The ambiance is what really adds gasoline to the love affair that i have with Heorot. We're talking about long wood tables with benches, dim lights, a fireplace, chess boards, and oh yes, decor fitting with a bar named Heorot. Yes, there's a dragon snaking through the ceiling. There might be some swords on the walls. Basically, if it's medieval, it's probably somewhere hidden in Heorot. We used to come here on weekday afternoons just as much as weekend nights. It's especially perfect for a cold winter or autumn night. Just make sure you get a seat by the fire. Writing this review makes me want to jump in my car and go back! 10 stars... This place is just incredible. Hands down, the absolute BEST beer bar God let man construct. BEAUTIFUL -- from the high, rafted ceilings to the beer selection, to the philosophy; this bar is the perfect beer bar. NO WINE (Ask for Lambics, Ciders, Sour Beers, talk to the bartender). NO DOMESTICS (Ask for a Pilsner). NO LIQUOR (try a bourbon barrel-aged such-and-such). Up stairs, if it hasn't changed in the years since I was up there, there are long tables with chess boards. WONDERFUL "studying" space. Concerts used to happen upstairs too, but a little birdie told me they bought the old "Doc's" bar next door. And the prices... are you kidding me? Heorot provides a great, cozy atmosphere to hang out with friends. The tables are large, providing a great location for large group gatherings. This sets the standard for medieval themed dive bars with a fantastic beer selection and absolutely no pretense whatsoever. They have a ton of Colorado-brewed beers, many of our Midwest favorites (Upland, Bell's, etc) and the fact that they have Framboise (Lindemann's Lambic raspberry beer) on tap makes me want to hug them. This is hands-down the best beer selection in Indiana. 70-some taps (no bud no coors no miller) and at least 350 bottles coming and going make for a fun time for any beer enthusiast. Swords and skulls adorn the walls while professors and punks belly-up. I can't believe nobody has written this review. This is the sort of bar that Brooklyn Hipsters go bonkers over. It's dark, gloomy, the decoration is bizarre, there are no TVs, no free wi-fi, the food is as simple as it gets, and best of all the beer is cheap, fresh and delicious. Exactly what you want when you go to a beer bar. If you're going to knock this place for its food be my guest, but would you go to McDonalds at 3AM on a Saturday, lit like a Christmas tree, and complain that the potatoes used in this batch of fries were not up to your standards? If you answered maybe, you should be reviewing Eleven Madison Park and not Heorot. This place can be matched against any beer bar I have ever been to. Period. The beer list is, to not exaggerate, 8 pages long. You want some 3 Floyds? You got it. Bell's? It's on there. A rare beer that you probably can't find within 300 miles? Boom, there it is. I cannot comment on the service aspect as I was there at 2pm on a Thursday and was the only person at the bar. The Heorot is only bar in Muncie I would really recommend. Granted, its only competition is shitty-to-mediocre college bars but the Heorot is actually a cool place. The beer selection is pretty great and will take you a long time to explore. That's really all you can ask for. I don't normally dig bars that are just a big hallway but I like the long tables even if they constrain the space a little. They fit well with the Beowulf theme. Speaking of which, there's a dragon snaking around the ceiling so watch out. Generally, a great beer selection and a great atmosphere makes this the best bar in Muncie. read more

My boyfriend and I came in for lunch and couldn't believe the horrible service. Not only was it 1:00 on a Sunday with absolutely no one there besides maybe two elderly muncie folk, but there was no sense of environment. No music, nothing. Which is whatever. My boyfriend went to school here a while back and loved this place! Even his name is on the bar. After trying to order 7 beers they finally had what we wanted. The bartender said nothing to us and left us to sit at the end of the bar in complete silence. We ordered some microwaved meatballs subs which were actually pretty good! After sitting there with empty pints for a few minutes, I finally had to wave him down to get our checks. The place hardly looked open and it seemed as if we were more of an inconvenience. Ah, the Heorot. It's everything you'd expect from the name: dim, dusty, and rough - in the best ways possible. Oh, and the best beer selection in - dare I say - the Midwest. The bartenders reflect the person ordering. Ask them honest to goodness questions about the beer, they'll treat you with every bit of beer geeky respect you would want. If you call them "bro" and order a Bud Light, you might just get kicked out. Regarding the beer list, it is, indeed, extensive - ludicrous, even. Yet at the same time, this is Heorot's main crutch. An endless selection means endless options, but it's also frankly overwhelming. With so many rare and unheard-of bottles, it's great fun to gawk at the menu, but unfortunately with rarity comes expense. And whereas the draught list is also very impressive, it means that the draught beers can sometimes sit around for a while. 90% of the time, the beer tastes fine - if it's one of the regular taps like Old Rasputin or something special and/or popular, it's almost definitely fine. Just watch out for more obscure beers that may not be moving especially fast. Ultimately, the good significantly outweighs the bad though, so don't be afraid to branch out and take advantage of this land of plenty! I can't say much for the food. The pizza's okay; as far as I'm concerned it's there more for the convenience of having something on-hand to soak up your drink. Haven't tried anything else; the other food items change each day and are sold within limited hours. Where Heorot really shines to me is the mead. I have yet to visit any bar-like establishment or liquor store with the mead selection these guys get - and near as I can tell, they've ALWAYS got Viking Blod (often on draught!). Mead really is one of those hidden gems in the drinking scene, and this is one damn good place to find it. Heorot has so much to offer, and a too-appropriate atmosphere to match. Come for the beer (or mead), stay for more of it. Truly a unique and worthwhile stop. read more

Nestled in the heart of downtown Muncie, IN is this gem of a beer joint. It is a contender in even the most elite of battles when it comes to variety and amount of beers available. I don't know the statistics, but I'll be damned if you leave there not finding a beer you love. My most recent adventure included Jenga, uno, and chess because they have board games available to use. It does get relatively busy at peak hours so I recommend being aggressive in getting a table/spot at the bar. I love you, Heorot. read more

The Heorot is worth the 30-45 minute drive from my house. Once or twice a quarter my friend (Ball State Grads) and I head to Muncie to have a pizza and an afternoon beer or 4 at the Heorot. The selection on tap and in bottles is a rotating experience every time we go. Never fear they have old standbys as well. Apparently they used to have some sort of drinking club when my friends were in college (in the round the world of beers type style). The staff is great and is very helpful in selecting a new beer to try. If you are within 2 hours of Muncie, it's worth a stop in. Make sure you grab a pizza. Worth the trip alone. read more

We went for the first time last night and were so glad we did. I wanted Zombie Killer and the Heorot is the only place I could find that stocks it. Their beer menu is huge, everyone should be able to find something they like. We also ordered a pizza with pepperoni, green peppers, and onions which cost a ridiculously low $5.50 as their pizza was on sale. It wasn't the best pizza I've had, but it was very good and hit the spot. I highly recommend trying the Heorot, you'll be happy you did. read more
