The instant you walk in staff greets you at the door and asks you how they may help you. Customer service at it's finest! I love the selection between two stores across the parking lots. One store has home decor, candies of all kinds, paints for the walls, and kitchen nick nacks. Whereas the other store focuses on home repairs, home keys, and small assortment of random home items. Writing this mostly for out-of-towners. This entry on Yelp will unfortunately hide that this Ace Hardware also contains a really great candy shop and general gift shop. The candy shop in the back is 100% worth a visit. I've been to dozens of "old fashioned" candy shops around the country that are either really cheesy or just are so overpriced you won't want to buy anything. This candy shop has really nice variety of old fashioned US brands, current novelty ones that kids like, and quality imports. Prices on candy are very fair. They have a good selection of regional sodas that are pretty $$$ individually but you buy in sets of 6 it's more reasonable. Also the staff is INCREDIBLY friendly and helpful. read more

Today we took on the task of replacing our outdated and slightly deteriorating kitchen faucet. Bought a nice version of fancy that fit our simple and amazingly decorated home ;P So, we head to ace for parts that don't come with the sink and we laugh at all of the options and how stupid we feel. And then, John is summoned for us. He was patient with our lack of knowledge and lingo and found us a solution that was worth celebrating. So thankful! Having a beer for you John! :) read more

A good Ace hardware store, carries pretty much anything and everything you could want or need in regards to home improvement stuff. Full electrical, plumbing, hardware, paint, lumber and garden departments - as well as seasonal items and specialty items that are specific to our region. The staff that I have encountered are all kind, friendly and professional, most of the department managers/supervisors have been in the store for a while and are very knowledgeable about their specific departments. There are a couple managers as well that are great reference points and have solid advise when it comes to dealing with or working around situations that require "out of the box" thinking to overcome. On a couple different visits I have always found the necessary materials when fabricating something out of the norm. They have a great paint supply department as are the plumbing, electrical and hardware departments - always able to find what was needed or come to a conclusion about how to overcome a specific situation when having to deal with something other than normal. They also have a kitchen and home appliance store (the white building next door to the main building in the parking lot) - I have been able to find appliance cords, wiring harnesses, etc. in this store and the manager is knowledgeable about most needs for specific appliance wiring requirements. There is also a nice selection of name brand kitchen tools - both large and small in this building. This is a solid Ace hardware store with a good staff of knowledgeable employees and you can find pretty much anything you need when it comes to home improvement and home repair supplies and materials. 4 Stars. 00231 read more

My grandfather Robert Hensel founded this store decades and decades ago, I believe in the fifties or sixties. He took a lot of pride in it. He would be so happy to see what it has become and that it still bears his name. It's huge! They have everything here even a candy store and gifts. This is the hub of our little town! This store is owned and operated by a local woman and Mom and just an all around great person. Yes this is a standard hardware store... they also have an awesome paint department, a kitchen store, a nice selection of kitchen outdoor furniture and house plants and carry brand names like EGO and YETI. I also regularly purchase gifts at this store for friends young and old. A big perk of shopping here is knowing I am supporting a store that supports the community in return. The way they worked together expressed a culture of teamwork and shared goals to help customers be the best they can be. Worst Ace experience ever. Hardware manager is really rude, as well as the door guard during this Covid outbreak. Both made me feel terrible about trying to return a broken tool, that a manger (Rachel?), who was really nice and helpful, told me I could return for a refund no problem. Best hardware store around. They stock a variety of items, from your traditional hardware needs, to kitchen appliances and gadgets, to candy! If they don't have it or stock it, but can get it, they will. The personnel are top notch, exceedingly helpful, knowledgeable, kind, and quick! I stopped shopping here after I witnessed the manager (pretty sure he's the manager) tow a car from their only half filled parking lot. The people were shoppers, and purchased a bunch of stuff, but took a 10 minute detour across the street before shopping. The manager was an ass about it, but no surprise, he always is. Thankfully they returned all their purchases. They now block off their parking lot as if it'll hurt their business if anyone parks there temporarily after hours. What a joke. The store is easy to navigate. It is set up to flow nicely. Even though there are employees always around to lend a hand, I rarely need them to point me in the right direction. They employees are generally knowledgeable, but if they don't know something, they will quickly find the answer. Although small, their parking lot is one of the nicer ones in Arcata. They will tow the NON customers, so the actual customers have a place nearby to park. When I go to Ace, I don't have to search out parking like I do with other downtown stores. The hardware side of the store has a limited selection (as is to be expected from a small hardware store). The biggest downside is the price of materials in the hardware section. An amazing array of different items are crammed into this centrally located gem of a hardware store. The staff is the most responsive and helpful group I think I've ever met, too. Without them, finding my item might take forever because I'll get distracted by all the cool things they stock. Another plus is that Hensel's is on the Ace hardware system, which means I can get items shipped to the store even if they're not normally in stock. They're very community oriented, too. Dan was really helpful when we came in looking for a specific bolt to fix a step stool. Being a couple of girls we usually get a talking down to at hardware stores, but I didn't get anything but friendly and genuine helpfulness. It was great especially considering I didn't really know how to describe what I needed nor did I take a pic beforehand (doi). He also helped us find panel clips for a broken cabinet. Hensel's has gone all-in on preventing the spread of coronovirus. Not only a greeter at the door offering you a choice of their handwashing station or an alcohol spray before you enter the premises, but they've stocked up on Filtrete furnace filters which, though pricey at $18.99, are large enough to give anti-viral protection for 10-14 masks depending on if you get the 1x20x25 size or the 1x20x30. Also a huge supply of nitrile gloves and thin bungee cord and regular cord material, and a handy instruction/review brochure at a display table which the owner made, and which details with photos how to make a cloth or furnace filter mask. So I love this ace, it's in town, close to everything, and the customer service is usually FAB. There have only been a couple times when I've asked to find something or asked about something and realized that the people knew less than I did but! Usually there is a super sweet guy there that helps as much as he can. I don't know his name, he wears a hat and he's got a nice blondish beard, anyway. Love this ace. Went to their HOUSEWARES store, worst service I have ever had, they made me leave my backpack at the register just to be able to look for the product that I wanted a set of pots and pans. They followed me through the store, leaving my backpack unattended. There are no words to describe the insult, I was wearing Prada glasses and they treated me like a criminal. Needless to say I didn't buy anything, I tried to pick up my backpack but they wouldn't give it back to me, they said they had to wait for the girl who set it aside but she was on break. Luckily I had my nametag on the backpack and was able to get it back. I left the store and will be logging a complaint with management tomorrow. read more

Usually my visits here are for walk-in-walk-out purchases, where I know exactly what I'm looking for. With that said I still find that many of the employees are useless. When I do need help, it's usually at the 'Helpful Hub' to get keys copied, packages sent, etc. However, on 4/5 occasions I find myself with no one there and it takes too long for someone to 'help'. This also baffles me as I see many employees aimlessly walking around and talking amongst themselves. If you can't simply copy a Subaru key (one of the most common cars up here) then please save us and yourself the time and find a new job. It's not that hard. read more
