The staff is always so polite and knowledgeable, the kitchen staff is putting out fantastic food, and the wine list is second to none! We went to Henley on Grace in a Saturday morning while visiting our son who lives near VCU. It was not good. The entire back of the brunch menu you couldn't order because there was something wrong with the sandwich maker? And no burger. So you couldn't order basically only order eggs. I live for cute and cozy brunch spots and this place didn't disappoint. Shoutout to Abigail for taking great care of us during our visit. We were also very pleased to learn about the origins of the place from its hospitable owner-what a great team! To start the brunch experience, we went with traditional mimosas-very nicely poured and refreshing! My mom and I ordered the shrimp frittata and my boyfriend ordered the steak and eggs. The shrimp frittata was delicious! Beautiful presentation but even more beautiful balance of fresh flavors. The potatoes were an added bonus and the fresh pieces of fruits on the side topped off the meal. Might I mentioned that this was a very balanced and filling meal. Been here twice. Once for brunch then the other was dinner, months apart. The restaurant is well lit. It's also good for groups. Some tables have different set of chairs from others which some may find more comfortable than others. Sonoma meatballs were tasty. Owner-ran business, with a great atmosphere and wine selection. The staff is friendly, and you can almost always find the owner to get a wine recommendation. Tried to go visit for the first time in a few months during open business hours and was greeted by the owner. Unfortunately, I think something must be going on in his personal life, because he was fairly rude and offered no explanation as to why I could not purchase some wine before he shut the door in my face. This might have been my best meal in Richmond so far! The owner is a quirky guy who loves his craft - you can feel it when he interacts. He is patient and willing to explain the ins and outs of the food you're ordering. The food was delicious. We had the daily special, which was a pasta with mushrooms and lobster. It was incredible! I could've eaten 10 servings of it! I ordered the Fresno Seafood Pasta as my entree. It was good, though the appetizer takes the cake. This is a wine bar, so plan accordingly. They do have beer and cocktail options as well. The dining room is comfortable - nothing crazy but a range of table sizes. We went for work, it was a dinner of about 25 or so. I came here for brunch with one of my friends during the weekend. We came a bit early, so we were the first ones in the restaurant that day. I ordered the veggie frittata. I really liked the potatoes on the side. The food was overall good - not the best brunch I've had in my life but it was still decent. Server was very kind. Full Disclosure: this Yelp review is a bit myopic. I've dined at Henley on Grace twice and both times were to pre-game before a concert at The National. On both occasions my wife and I split the Fresno Seafood Pasta and quaffed down several cocktails. I've been in Richmond long enough to remember this spot use to be The Red Door. I'm happy to see it's alive and thriving as Henley on Grace. I find the interior of the place charming and inviting. The wait staff are total professionals and on both occasions the services was top notch. The food is decadent and rich. I say food but what I really mean is the only dish I've tried, the Fresno Seafood Pasta. This dish is first class, and the menu describes the dish as follows: Hand-rolled Pappardelle Pasta, loaded with a Seared U8 Scallop, Giant Shrimp (2), Jumbo Crabmeat, Sundried Tomatoes, Spinach and Fresh Herbs in a Mushroom and Seafood Sauce. For those wondering what a U8 scallop is; it's the size. A U8 scallop is super colossal just like the $36 price tag of this dish. Worth every penny. Henley on Grace is very posh and I'm glad it's here in Richmond. I would 100% recommend this place for a romantic date night. As I stated earlier this review is a bit myopic but perhaps the term I'm looking for is insufficient. I owe it to myself to take my wife here for a full three course dinner. I recently visited Henley on Grace to see what all the hype was about. We made a reservation for a Friday evening around 6 pm, and there were plenty of time slots available for our party of three. Upon arrival, we were surprised to find the restaurant fairly empty. We were greeted and presented with the drinks and food menus. As a celiac, I was excited to try the gluten-free calamari but was disappointed to learn they were out of it. I inquired about my options for the smashed burger and asked if I could have a small side salad instead of a bun. The waiter assured me that would be fine. In the end, I opted for the roasted cauliflower, which was flavorful and cooked to perfection, along with the smashed burger. Unfortunately, the burger was very disappointing--the beef patty was bland, and the lettuce was old and brittle. When I asked about the side salad, the waiter apologized, saying it must have been overlooked. However, I did enjoy the chips. My brother ordered the salmon salad, but the greens seemed days old, and the portion was very small. He did mention that the grilled naan with truffles was really good and something he would recommend. I don't understand how this place was voted one of the top dining restaurants in Richmond. Henley on Grace is a really great dining option for a night in downtown. They serve brunch and dinners, they also include a kids menu, which is holiday themed this time of year. The win menu is also quite extensive with a wonderful selection. For appetizers, I highly suggest trying the calamari and the meatballs. Both of them are cooked to perfection and are served with fantastic marinara sauce. The group I went with enjoyed the Smashburger, Steak, Duck, Salad with Chicken and Salmon. All were very happy with their meals. I tried the Vegetarian Mushroom and really enjoyed it. The Balsamic Glaze is truly what made the dish! I do recommend carving out quite a bit of time for your meal, as it took about an hour for us to receive our entrees. So just not impressed. For this price point I would expect a higher level of service and better attention to detail. Had this been McDonalds I might have been okay with it. So let's start with arrival. We showed up as they opened with a reservation. There was one other table in the place and a full staff yet it still took several minutes to be seated. We had asked in the reservation for a table along the wall or in a corner and instead got the middle of the room. At two points we received incorrect dishes that had to be taken back. The rice on 3 of the plates (see picture) was way undercooked. We politely mentioned the rice issue to the waitress and all of us noticed after that point that she seemed to be trying to rush us out the door. The mixed drink I got was also nothing to write home about. The salmon appetizer wasn't bad and the steak dish was good and the steak itself was well cooked. The atmosphere was fine and allowed for easy conversation with the whole table. We booked a table of 5 for Sunday brunch so we can catch a show at 2pm nearby. They were unclear about which table we can get but the owner was very savvy and offered me a Prosecco while i waited for the party to arrive. We ended up taking the only round table by the window which is really nice. There was also confusion on who was waiting on our table. So our first drink order was not communicated. Our waiter at 2nd day on the job did his best to redeem the situation. Overall the food is good according to everyone at the table. We ordered the big breakfast, steak and eggs, chicken club croissant, veggie frittata and I had the salmon eggs Benedict. We thought the food here was fine, but not as good as a 4- or 5-star level. Maybe we came on an off day? I made a reservation for 10:30am, which is when they open. We arrived 15 min early because we were coming straight from the train station. We waited outside so that we wouldn't annoy the staff doing final prep. At 10:28, we figured it was safe to enter (the door was unlocked and another couple had also arrived). The manager/chef (an older gentleman) met me at the entrance and said "you have 7 more minutes to wait," then backed me out of the restaurant and locked the door. The clock in the restaurant clearly said 10:30am. It was honestly one of the weirdest interactions. We were all befuddled by how aggressive he was, especially since we had waited outside to be polite! The other couple also tried to enter the restaurant immediately after us. The servers were very polite and I think were trying to make up for the manager's attitude. They kindly let us put our bags out of the way by the front window. Drinks were very strong but not great. We came here for my partner's Grandmother's 91st birthday dinner. The staff here was so accommodating and kind. I think the service and environment really made this space special for us. My partner's Mom and Uncle were so happy to be there because they were nostalgic about how it used to be the Red Door. The people who worked here are what made me want to give this local gem an extra star. They have a wine list with over 100 wines so there is something for everyone. They let us try two wines we were debating between before buying a bottle for the table. I have been here once in the past and we got a delicious beef stroganoff. On this visit, the food was a bit lacking. We were a group of six, so the food took a while to come out. I ordered the grilled naan truffle mushroom bread and the Cal-Asian ahi tuna. The bread was pretty plain, it was fine though. The ahi tuna itself was tasty, but the entire dish was bland. It needed a bit more flavor. Although I wouldn't necessarily return for the food, I enjoyed the wine and LOOOOVED dessert. The birthday girl shared her creme brulee cheesecake with us and it was divine. I would come back for this cheesecake. The most special part of this visit was that they allowed us to use the sparklers we brought for the birthday girl indoors (she's born on July 4th). Went to their "Old World Five Course Bordeaux Wine Dinner". Everything was well planned and thought out. Even had a bulletin to go with the meal. The bulletin listed each course, a list of ingredients, where it originated, the wine for that course, a picture of the country where the wine was from, information on the chef, hotel or restaurant that invented the dish. This was the second time I had eaten at Henley on Grace. The food, as usual, was super great. I had the best fun laughing, eating and learning more about foods and wines. What a cute spot! I've passed this several times but was finally able to drop in for happy hour. They offer 5 items that are all $5 for happy hour. They offer 100 wines available by the glass. We sat at the bar and were even greeted by the owner at the door. Our bartender was super friendly too. Our apps came out super fast. Cute spot in a line of restaurants on grace street. We ordered two apps to share the meatballs and the truffle chips. They were okay. For dinner I had the steak and my partner got the halibut on special. My steak was delicious. However the halibut was only okay. Both dishes were on a bed of saffron rice which we love but it was mushy and overdone. We shared a tiramisu martini that was a great way to end the dinner. Overall we felt like we overpaid for the quality of the food and flavors. Our server was great but we will probably not go back. They did have a preset menu for the holiday which I usually don't love but the options were great. For a starter, my boyfriend and I both had the salad with bleu cheese and green goddess dressing. It was seriously so tasty! Wasn't expecting much but was pleasantly surprised. As my entree I had the crabmeat stuffed salmon. It was cooked PERFECTLY! The crab meat was plentiful and that sauce on top?! WHEW! My boyfriend had the steak with crabmeat and enjoyed his meal as well, although he did complain some pieces were a bit too chewy. The meals are served atop a bed of yellow rice that was seasoned well and cooked perfectly. For dessert I did the pistachio cake and my boyfriend had the cheesecake. Both amazing. Not too sweet and the presumably homemade whipped cream was so light and airy. Service was phenomenal from start to finish. We had an 8:15 PM reservation and we were seated by 8:33 PM, which for me wasn't bad seeing as the special occasion, the size of the restaurant, and how busy it was. Not sure how this one slipped under our radar; it's been around for 2 years already. My wife and I tried Henley on Grace on a Sat evening. We had a rez for 6pm when they were at 35% capacity. An hour later, the restaurant quickly approached near full capacity. Nice decor. We appreciate the exposed brick and art on the walls. Service was fast and friendly. My chicken entree was slightly overcooked, but aside from that, the food was well presented and tasty. The tables for 2 against the wall diminish the experience. Some of the other seating for 2 offered more room and comfortable chairs. Solid wine menu. Reasonably priced dinner experience. Dinner for two with tip will run $140 - $200. 3.5 stars. I booked an 8-person table here for business travel, and they were extraordinarily accommodating and flexible. We had to cancel once because of terrible weather, but returned the next night no problem. Everyone who works here is so enthusiastic and high-energy -- I felt that and appreciated it! While they are billed as a wine bar that also has food, their food selection is expansive, so it's difficult to box Henley into one category or another. As far as wine goes, while I loved the huge selection, I didn't see a lot of Virginia wine. The Virginia wine I did get, though, was excellent. I also eyed some good oranges on the menu. Their food took awhile to come out and portion sizes were odd. Small plates were certainly small -- their forager salad (I think that's what it's called) lacked substance and was hardly shareable. Entrees were solid, and I liked the vegetarian option -- it was tasty and substantial! We ordered all of their desserts and it was an array of cake (or cake-adjacent) options. They were well-received. Their decor is not quite there. Their seats, for example, appear to be from Target and aren't made of high-traffic fabric. Some decor is cringe (of the "it's wine o'clock" variety) and the music wasn't totally in line with what you'd expect here (lots of Lana, which I loved). It's not upscale, it's not trendy, it's just there in an empty space in the middle. Nothing is bad -- it's just there. While not crowded, it was loud -- the acoustics are tricky for large groups. They seemed well-equipped for large groups overall and I would recommend it for that purpose, especially for last-minute reservations. read more

My husband and I stopped by Henley on Grace as we traveled through Richmond this evening. What a lucky night! The restaurant is a wine bar with all wines by the bottle or glass, which we love. We started with a bottle of Chenin Blanc/Vouvray and mushroom naan. The naan was crispy and perfectly cooked, topped with again perfectly cooked mushrooms, spinach, artichokes, fresh Parmesan & goat cheese. Incredible. For dinner, my husband exercised restraint as we were traveling and ordered salad and salmon. Salmon was again well cooked and my husband raved. I had zero self-restraint, thank goodness and ordered the lobster pasta. Pappardelle is hand made, topped with thinly sliced asparagus, tomatoes in a fish stock, white wine sauce with a touch of crream. It was perfection. I don't remember the name of the wine I ordered, but it was under the rose section (the first one listed) and it was tasty enough to get two glasses! My friend had wine too and she enjoyed it. For my meal, I ordered the 314 salad and added steak for an extra $9. I'm glad I did or it might not have been enough food. My boyfriend ordered the scallops, and why he said they were good, he was still hungry at the end of the meal. I gave him some of my steak. Others ordered the salmon and a burger, both of which got good feedback at the table. For dessert, I ordered the limoncello cake, which was quite good. I'd recommend.
