My son and I went to Helzberg mid-January. I was helping him select an engagement ring. He had an idea of what he wanted and the salesman was nice enough to present a couple options and my son decided on a ring. The salesman had commented on how fast they were because they had an in-house jeweler. He even said the jeweler would be in the next day. He made us feel confident that the ring would be available to pick up very soon. As we were wrapping up the sale and discussing a promise date, he asked if February 1 would be okay. Since there was no rush on our end, we accepted that date and my son made plans and arrangements based on that date. A couple days before February 1, my son called to check on the status of the ring and to see if, by chance, it was ready. The women he spoke to on the phone said he'd be lucky if it was ready by the promise date. It was a bit irritating but it wasn't the promise date yet and we'd see what happens when the promise date came. Well, on February 1, my son called again to make sure the ring was ready before he headed over there. He was told that they were behind and it would be two more weeks. On February 2, I decided to talk to them in person. I spoke to an older gentleman who explained that their jeweler had a medical emergency and had to take time off and that they had to send their jewelry out, putting them behind schedule. When I asked what their policy was if they didn't meet their promise date, he didn't have anything more for me than that things happen. He also mentioned that they were already behind schedule before the jeweler had to go on medical leave which led to more questions. Were they behind when they gave us the February 1 promise date, knowing they wouldn't be able to meet that date? Why weren't we informed earlier so that we could have searched for alternate plans (refunding this ring and going with another jeweler)? He was unapologetic and didn't really seem to care. If customers are paying lots of money for meaningful pieces of jewelry, they should be met with outstanding customer service. I did not get that at all. Before leaving, he confirmed that the ring would be ready in maybe two weeks. I inquired about a possible refund and he told me the date I had to do that. I visited the two closest jewelry stores, hoping they would have the ring. They didn't but they were extremely nice (I would recommend Kay and Zales based on their friendly workers). I visited Don Roberto and I walked out with the same ring and had an amazing experience. I stopped by Helzberg for a refund and the older gentleman barked at our salesman to come over, saying, "This is the one I was talking about." The salesman assured me the ring would be here tomorrow and that he had expedited it. I explained to him that I was just told 20 minutes ago that it would be maybe two weeks and I purchased the ring somewhere else. If I had been told they were expediting it and it would be available the next day, I would have agreed to that. Even though it wasn't ready on the promise date, at least they could have assured me they were doing all they could by expediting it. Instead, the other gentleman only said it would be maybe two weeks. That's what I had to go off of so I purchased the ring somewhere else. As I continued with the refund, the only apology I got was from the salesman. The older gentleman seemed displeased with me and the salesman. As my son's young friends start getting engaged, I will advise them to avoid Helzberg. The lack of care and customer service was disappointing. There are plenty of other jewelry stores that want your business and will go above and beyond to serve you. read more
