I stopped in a few times during my recent visit to Pittsburgh. Located in the popular Strip District it has a lot to offer as a brewery. The space is huge which includes the dedicated patio seating. They have a variety of fun games to play inside and some TV's. I tried a few of the IPA's and I was very satisfied to the complexity of the beer. I live in the West Coast so it was nice to try a different version of an IPA. They also offer cocktails if beer isn't your thing. The staff on both visits were polite and helpful. read more

We stopped by Helltown yesterday night from about 7:30pm until close with the primary purpose of doing live band karaoke with Lead Singer Wanted. The inside is huge with a good variety of picnic tables, high tops, and bar seating so it's a great place for a large group. They also have a spacious outdoor patio as well. It was pleasantly cold inside and I was glad the AC worked well, even with their high ceilings. They don't seem to have food there besides a few bags of chips behind the bar for purchase. I did see someone bring in a whole pizza so I'm assuming it's bring your own food. There's no table service and you wait in a designated queue at the bar to order. They take Apple Pay which was really convenient. They have a variety of different beers and cocktails. I thought my two beers I got were pretty reasonably priced. Live band karaoke itself was really fun and our group enjoyed it a lot. Sadly, it emptied out quite a bit throughout the night except for at the end when a large group randomly came in to sing the final song with everyone. Very spacious bar and patio area. Huge beer menu. Lots of flavors for a wide variety of tastes. The bartenders were helpful in deciding which beer suited my taste. Here offered samples to help me decide. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff. The dining room is equipped with video games, pinball machines, and a claw machine. Gotta love old school arcade games. Nice outside patio complete with a stage for live entertainment. Definitely worth stopping by while visiting the Strip District downtown. Little pricy but that's to be expected being in town. Helltown is a great place to come for fun events or to just grab a drink. I came Thursday night with some friends after I had something for work in the strip. We were originally just planning on grabbing a quick drink before going to Pitt shack but ended up staying for awhile since they had a fun live band karaoke event going on. We all had a really fun time singing and the beer is both reasonably priced and good. They don't serve food however they have no problem with you eating food from somewhere else inside so it wasn't an issue at all. read more

Located in the strip district it's got a lot of room both inside and outside for groups! They offer a large selection of IPAs. My husband got the brown ale, the "mysterious brown ale". He really enjoyed it, wasn't heavy at all. They do mot have a coder on tap but have Arsenal cider in cans (both the dry and semi-sweet). I got the Arsenal Event semi sweet cider and really enjoyed it. It's a good middle ground cider. read more

I only experienced the outdoor space, but inside looks nice too (clean gender-segregated restrooms). My friend's bands was playing, so we bought drinks from Helltown and lunch from local places and enjoyed one of the first sunny weekends with amazing music and ambience. We stopped by Helltown while in a visit to the Strip. Located across the street from the fabulous seafood store Wholey's. The space is large and open. We bellied up to the bar and were promptly greeted by the bartender. They were friendly and knowledgeable, and offered samples along with advice. Nice. We only tried beer during the visit and we were pleased with the offerings. I had a barleywine and a stout. Both were tasty and strong. Everyone enjoyed the beer and the coffee Porter was the favorite. When a companion is in the long hot food line at Wholey's, head over to Helltown and wait there. You'll be glad you did. read more

Maybe it's wide variety of different people enjoying everything it has including a place like this with a simple yet cool exterior to the interior which draws you in to stay a little longer with its warmth. The last time I stopped by this place it had a lot of happy faces enjoying their outstanding beers. The lady bartender had a nice smile and was happy to serve us. I looked over the menu on the wall and it did look very good and especially from the food I saw coming out, but we weren't there to eat, only to enjoy a flight of beer and to purchase a beer glass for the collection. This is a cool place and it's outside seating area makes for a relaxing atmosphere to people watch when the weather is nice and all while enjoying a cold beverage and/or some excellent looking food. I've previously gone to helltown for their outdoor ambiance, and this was my first time going inside. It's a typical open concept brewery ambiance, but the live music definitely bumped up the ambiance. There isn't a ton of seating if you come in with a big group, but we were fine standing around a table & dancing to the music anyway! I don't think there is any wait service, or at least I didn't see any. Walk up bar service is pretty quick, though, and I really enjoyed my mango beer. If you want something other than beer, however, I was told by friends who tried to order liquor-based drinks that the bar was out of a lot (and we went on a Saturday, so this was surprising). One thing to note is that this brewery felt very overrun by families with small kids, so this definitely shifts the ambiance a little bit. Overall though, it was a fun spot that I'd go back to! I mean if I could just leave it at that and give it 5 stars I would but I think Yelp has an algorithm against one word reviews and plus I am far too creative to leave it at that. Went here with the dudes and we truly enjoyed the entire experience. From our wonderful and friendly waitress, to the beer selection for flights, to the slamminnnnnnnn tasty smoked chicken salad sandwich and mac n cheese, ughhhh I wish I had both right now. I was here recently on a beautiful weekend evening to have a couple of drinks. Downtown and the north shore were super busy. As we were driving around, we stumbled on Helltown Brewing in the strip. I was super shocked that this place was virtually empty. We went inside to order drinks (I think two people were inside) and then we went outside to enjoy the weather and our drinks. The inside is very large. This is a place you could enjoy all year round. The outside also has a large space with picnic tables scattered around. The employees told us that they do not serve food, but we could order delivery from somewhere if we wanted. I also heard that on weekends and certain evenings, they had live music and food trucks. This is a great place to catch up with friends or meet up with coworkers after work. I really had a great time here! read more

Such a great summer spot! You get the best all in one place- beer, wine, cocktails, outdoor seating, live music & delicious food. We were there last summer and it looks like the menu changes but what we had was great- pulled pork, Mac and cheese & tomato and corn salad. We've been to 1700 Penn countless times in our just over 2 years of living in Pittsburgh. We really enjoy it! There's both a huge outdoor seating area with communal picnic tables, heaters, and a drink "shack" if you will, and a large indoor space. About 1/3 of the indoor part is a PA Libations wine shop, the other 2/3 are a big long bar with plenty of TVs for sports fans, and a mixture of high top & normal seating. There are plenty of windows, which make it a nice place to be during the day. They also offer lots of live music nights and trivia nights. I've only eaten here when they had Aviva brick oven pizza, which was delicious (not sure if they still offer that). Now they have an actual food menu of sandwiches and things, but we haven't tried any of them so my review is basically just of the overall space, service, and drinks. The bartenders here are incredibly nice & welcoming. There's one that's there almost every time we visit, I think his name might be Noah and he's great! If you don't see something on their cocktail list that jumps out to you, you can tell them some things you like & they'll make something just for you. My recent favorite cocktails are the Lavender Eclipse, Rule of Plum, & Espresso Martini. My husband also enjoys the Helltown Beers. read more

This Illy Philly and her good friend were out on a rainy night in the burgh, looking for somewhere to get out of the rain. We ventured down to the Strip and there they were... lights blazing and music playing! We walked into a fabulous Jazz set and a beautiful atmosphere. The staff were super, super nice. Our bartender was phenomenal!!! I'm not a real drinker, and I really don't like to taste the alcohol and this is what I told my bartender. He winked at me and said," I'll make you something", and he did, and it was deliciosooo!!!! He made this Guava concoction that I ordered twice! The restaurant was closed, but they graciously made us two platters, one with veggies and hummus and one with salsa and chips. The Jazz band was really out of this world and their sets were loveliness to my ears. We enjoyed our evening and we shut the place down, lol!!! The only negative about this place is that the inside doesn't match the outside! I really had no idea if I was in the right place until I walked in and looked around for a moment. I'm not really sure what's up with the owner/marketing/set-up, but it's tricky. Once inside, I found a spot at the bar and had a couple of beers. The Hazy IPA was perfect for a post-marathon brew! I was planning to eat later at a nearby sandwich place, so I only ordered light food. I had some miso-mustard pickles that hit the spot. Wasn't sure how to check into this spot, as this is a conglomeration of both Helltown as well as 1700 Penn. Still consider this as a brewing company first, with a healthy list of draft items in a spacious setting. Decent food list here, but was only around for drinks. Tried both the "Buffy IPA" ($7) and the "Interdimensional Pterodactyl" Triple IPA ($?). The Buffy has a hazy feel with some citrus, while the Pterodactyl is more strength ad hop-forward. Was able to lounge and watch the games on TV even after last call at around 11pm. During good weather there is a large outdoor seating area where there seems to be events from time to time. Can see this place being very busy, so it is nicer to go late at night to avoid the crowds. read more

Tourist trap!!!!! Food is overpriced, salty and lacking flavor. Let me describe... the pulled pork sandwich was $16, consists of pork on a bun- no other toppings I.e. onion pickle tomato nothing. Only offered 2 bbq sauces- one being blueberry. All mains come with a bag of popcorn- so essentially $16 for a plain bbq sandwich. The $9 Gouda Mac and cheese came in a small paper cup and tasted like Kraft out of a box. The miso pickles', was a cup of maybe 10 pickle rounds with a squirt of spicy mustard on top, $5... Finally the watermelon salad came out in a small paper box, very salty and disgusting, with added chicken it cost $19. The service is lacking. A man in an ugly striped/plaid vest standing behind the empty bar says 'hiiii how are you tonight????!!!!'. When I try to order my drink he says let me get so and so to get that for you, as he walks away chatting with the bartender. Not sure if he was a lazy manager or just useless. Why are you behind the bar, say hello, but can't serve a draft beer? The restaurant had maybe 6 people inside, more workers than customers. Overall the bill was over $60, for a sandwich, Mac and cheese, salad, coke and a beer. This place is overpriced, and service is lacking. Was empty on a Friday evening, for good reason. We stopped by here officially for the second time on a Saturday night in June. A few years back peak pandemic we stopped by here as there was just outside seating. A lot has changed in two years. We are familiar with Helltown Beer because we used to live close to their brewery in Export. Now that we live closer to the city it's good to have Helltown beer still close to us. I think the taproom and patio outside are great spaces. There is a lot of space even if it's busy and you have good options if you want to be inside or if the weather is nice outside. I remember what this place was before and I can't believe how it has transformed. Other than beer they have wine and cocktails that looked good too but we were just here for our Helltown Beer. Service was good from the bartenders. They have bands that can play inside and outside so again it's a good place all year round. They didn't have my favorite Helltown beer on tap today but I still found one that I liked. This is a place they we will be back more often especially in the summer. read more
