Bad. Bad. Bad. Heirloom has jumped the shark. My partner and I were regulars here pre-Covid. After a second truly lousy experience, I doubt we will be back. Seated at the bar, my partner and I ordered drinks, a $24 charcuterie board, plus an $8 side of french fries. Fries were served cold and unsalted. We asked for extra salt and ketchup. Bartender couldn't be bothered. (In fairness to him, the restaurant is seriously understaffed.) The $24 charcuterie board was beyond disappointing. It was really an absolute joke, consisting of five slices of bread, three slices of salami, three rolled up slices of an awful quality of prosciutto, four smashed green olives, Gulden's mustard, and a tiny hunk of Parmesan cheese? (Parmesan? Really?). Whoops, I forgot the five sour pickle chips. Like the ones that go on a McDonald's hamburger. As mentioned above the service was horrible. Pretty much non-existent. Note that Heirloom re-opened 6-8 weeks ago. We visited right after their re-opening, and had a questionable experience that was written off to the recent re-opening. Friday was more a case of really bad management at Heirloom. (I don't want to blame the staff.) read more

Went there for breakfast. $17 for 2 eggs, flavorless home fries, bacon, toast and coffee. Yeah, I could have done this at home for like 5 bucks. This is for Yalies or fancy folk in New Haven. It was kinda garbage. read more

This was by far the best brunch experience we've had in New Haven. My boyfriend and I decided to sit at the bar, and we were greeted by the bartender, Alexander with a welcoming smile. The service was perfect - just the right amount of attention to give us our privacy yet feel very well taken care of. We enjoyed a cocktail - I ordered "the morning call" and my bf ordered the one with the smoky drink with jalapeño tequila & coconut cream (can't remember the name but it was amazing. They get the smoky flavor by using a smoke gun on cherry wood board..it was awesome). Now, to the best past. Omg the food. Since my bf and I both have sweet tooths, we couldn't skip the hot caramel apple donuts (we worked out, so we deserved this). They were incredible - 5 hot and sugary donuts, with real apples inside and a delicious anglaise on the side. Good thing the service was so quick or we would've ate all of them. For our main course, I ordered the egg white kale frittata - beautiful fluffy egg whites with crispy kale and a light tomatoes sauce on top with refreshing spring salad on the side. It was so unique, with just the fight amount of sunflower seeds and delicious burrata. It tasted like it came straight from the farm. My boyfriend ordered the huevojs estudiados, which came out in a piping hot skillet. The fried eggs were runny - but he loved them. It was served in a salsa sauce with black beans, cotija cheese with pita bread on the side, perfect for dipping. The two TV screens at the bar were playing an American in Paris, which made our experience even better. Took us back in time. Maurice (the manager) greeted us and made sure we enjoyed everything. Compliments to the chef and staff. The place is definitely 5 stars and we can't wait to come back! PS, we saved the donuts for later and they proved to be an amazing dessert. read more

Such a welcoming place to eat. The host was beyond friendly and seated us upon arrival, and shortly after we were greeted by our waiter which we knew from another restaurant that she previously worked at and to our surprise she was just as friendly now as she was then. We started with the warm bread with ricotta cheese and I kid you not you can put that stuff on anything. We opted for multigrain bread which in ny opinion was a great choose. The grape fruit juice was freshly squeezed and made for a good substitution of out go to mimosas. Our main dish was thee pan roasted salmon, which was a pretty big piece of fish laid on top of a avocado & pea gazpacho which created an amazing combination. Overall I will be visiting this place soon as they have a very fresh menu for brunch also the service was beyond great all of the staff was friendly the place was clean nice and fancy. It makes for a good place for a date or a large group outing. read more

Came back the second time! It was overall amazing again. Our waitress helped us pick wines and we felt so bad because we tasted like 4, and finally the 4th one we liked. So so kind if her! The cheeseboard was perfection! The cheese, perfectly room temp and selection of honey, fig and bread. So good. We also got the pumpkin burrata. That was divine as well! The only hiccup was our desert took about 20-25 minutes to come out and it wasn't even that good. The cookies were ok, but the chocolate pot de creme was just average. I Still will come back here! So cozy too for the holIdays. read more

Ate here since I appreciate the farm to table aspect, and overall the food was decent. I started off with the garlic octopus, which fell a little short of expectations. The duck entree was good, and a colleague got the scallops which looked great but didn't seem to spark a lot of enthusiasm from him. The brussel sprouts side was not bad but I wasn't a fan of the sweet glaze it came with. read more

We came here for a Sunday brunch on a whim past on the reviews and some local reports that it's good. It's a bit confusing to find, but it's inside The Study hotel, so just go into the hotel to find the place. Once inside, it's a really nice space: inviting and cute. We ordered pancakes (for the two boys) and banana bread french toast (for me) for our mains. For starters, we had the baked ricotta and Parmesan fries. My first impression of the place was just blown away. The baked ricotta had such flavor of truffle and thyme. It was... just perfect. I loved it. The fries were good too, but not on the same level. For the mains, the pancakes are cakey and thick. My banana bread french toast was SO good. I loved it. It was so rich and moist, with a lot of banana flavor. It's very sweet, so only order if your sweet tooth is big enough. However, my five star review faltered when our server just disappeared for a long time as we finished eating. We couldn't even flag him down, let alone have him come back and check on us and it just sorta marred the otherwise lovely experience. The pricing too is high for what it is. It's fine for a treat, but probably won't be a go to (though maybe just for the ricotta). read more

Second visit to Heirloom, this time for the brunch menu. Good stuff. Nick and I met up with my parents in New Haven (it's about halfway from where we live) for a birthday outing & had another enjoyable meal. This is so much more than another hotel restaurant. Service was friendly and efficient, and the season locally sourced food rocked my afternoon Food highlights include: - The smoked New England trout dip with radishes! Creamy, smoky, and perfectly paired with grilled crostini. - smoked pastrami hash with poached Eggs, potatoes & melted cheese fonduta (great flavor balance and not too salty - HATE when pastrami is painfully salty) - New England crispy fish sandwich with lemon, arugula & cucumber yogurt sauce I wasn't a huge fan of the huevos estudiados (fried eggs, CT grassfed chili, spiced pepper jack, house chips & avocado sauce) but I only think it's because I wasn't in the mood, being so focused on my rockin pastrami hash. Two out of four of us ordered the dish and LOVED it, so I'm only basing this on a quick bite I stole from Nick's plate. Anyway, I'll be back. Great menu. read more

Very disappointing. Food was OK at best, and certainly not worth the price. I had $30 overcooked salmon with a spicy sauce that didn't go and made it even more unpleasant. The people seated next to me also told their server the food was just OK. read more

This was my first time at the Heirloom restaurant and it did not disappoint. Everything was flavorful and cooked well. Our reservation was at 7pm and when we were sat, we advised our waitress we had to be out by 8:45pm because we had a time slot at 9pm at The Escape Room. Service was extremely poor. It took at least 25 minutes at one point for our waitress to check to see if we needed another round of drinks. She had no personality when speaking to us. It seemed that she didn't put any pep in her step knowing we had a time schedule. Our dinner didn't come out to 8:45pm and she didn't at least apologize. Luckily we were able to change our Escape Room time because of the delay. I asked to speak to the manager and explained our concerns. He claimed the table next to us who had a large party ordered before us and the kitchen was backed up. He did take the desserts off the bill. The donuts and butterscotch were really good! Still a bit pricey for 6 people the bill was $420 and that's only us getting one or two drinks each. read more

A solid brunch place in New Haven next to Yale. The decor is very modern and the ambience is on the casual to classy side. The service is fantastic. The food was again, solid. If you're craving meat I recommend the Full Study Breakfast: toast, eggs, 2 large chicken sausage, and breakfast potatoes l. My wife got the Kale frittata which is a healthier option and tasted good. The coffee was nothing special. The food is on the pricier side. In addition we were disappointed because it was my wife's birthday and they wouldn't give her a free dessert. 1.) Just to warm you up: It was later in the night I was in the mood for a dessert. I don't normally eat dessert but tonight was my sweet tooth. 2.) What your eyes may see: Plush, lavish. It's classy looking inside. You almost feel like an outsider, because a lot of Yalies come here, especially professors, having heavy debates about planets, the universe and electro magnetic energy. It's definitely a "stick your nose in the air type of place. Very pretentious. Shared by a hotel, you have the option to sit in their lobby and eat and drink the Heirloom restaurant's food. 3.) Dessert food and drink: My friend and I ordered the Apple Cider Donuts and Chocolate Molten Cake. Along with were a nice red and white that paired with both desserts. The Apple Cider donuts were cooked in Peanut oil, something I could not eat due to food allergies. My assumption is that anything they fry is in peanut oil? Chocolate molten cake was small, but definitely hit the spot. The apple cider donuts were HUGE, coming with 6 sugar covered puffed balls. And just like Cinnabon, it came with a side of hot vanilla frosting. I thought of the Molten cake to be okay. It was definitely more of a brownie than a sponge type cake, so I guess I say it's okay because it wasn't what I expected. 4.) Service: The bartender, Ed, was awesome! Well versed in wine. He knew very quickly what wine to pair it with. I love how the check gives you a guide on what would be a 20% and a 15% tip. I believe in a place like that they shouldn't have to do that. These are generally Yale students, alumni and professors. That should be more for a clientele who is below that level of intelligence, like, Chili's, for example. Lol. 5.) Impressions: For a very small molten cake and donuts and two glasses of wine I spent $40. Maybe I'll come back to try their food read more

You can do much better in New Haven. Three of us tried this restaurant out for New Haven Restaurant Week and I can guarantee that none of us will go back. Two of us got the wedge salad, which was decent but not spectacular; one of us got the crab cake, which was a bit overdone and under-seasoned. Then one of us got the snapper, which was decent but a very small portion, two of us got the pork chop which I did not care for at all, although the sweet potato hash and greens were quite good. For dessert one of us got the sorbet, again unremarkable, and two of us got the brownie, which was not served cold and was hard to even cut. The service was horrible. The waitress first got our drink order wrong, but the worst offense was they brought out an incorrect dessert. When we pointed it out, they did not come back with the correct dessert for over 10 minutes, and at that we had to ask another server to get the manager to figure it out for us. These were pre-made desserts so there was no excuse for the runner or our server in not being able to get the correct dessert out. The manager did comp our drinks, which was nice, but I will not return and would not recommend to a friend. With the high prices and the enjoyable ambience, this place should be great, but it simply isn't. read more

Located in the lobby of The Study, this bright and airy spot features a rotating seasonal menu and houses the comfiest couches to catch up with friends (or read the newspaper if you're into that). There's various sizes tables/coffee table areas and also a full service bar if you're just looking for a quick drink. The folks at the bar are friendly, efficient, and knowledgable of the area. I came for brunch on the weekend and tried the Banana Foster French Toast which errs on the sweet side (even for me, and I have a pretty strong sweet tooth). It was fluffy and very tasty, but ask for the ice cream on the side if you're worried about the dish being too sweet! Or ask your server to recommend a savory dishes to complement this since it's more like a dessert anyway. read more

It was my first experience at Heirloom and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The menu is creative and it was hard to decide what we wanted to eat! We ended up getting brussel sprouts for an appetizer and they were a delicious mix of grilled, sweet and salty. I also tried the ricotta cheese and bread combo and decided I could only eat that for the rest of my life and be satisfied. ;) I then got the seafood bouillabaisse for my entree and loved the ocean-y flavors of it. My husband ordered the scallops and said they were perfectly cooked. Dessert (pear cobbler) was the only thing that underwhelmed me; I was so full from the savory already that I probably could have skipped the sweet. The food did seem to take a while, but I attributed that to our large party of 10. We were in no hurry, so it wasn't a problem. The service was very friendly! It looks like a super fancy place, and we were worried we were underdressed, but it's actually more of a casual-fancy place. Nice jeans and a sweater or a button up work fine. read more

I really wanted to like Heirloom better because I had heard good things coming in. Here's how the convo went: Eric: What's your favorite restaurant in New Haven? Friend: I really like Heirloom. The food there is amazing. Eric: Really?!? Better than Caseus?! Friend: Yeah, much better than Caseus. Eric: What?! Really?! I need to check this place out! There's where it all went wrong. As with most things in life, the lower the expectations the better. Nothing is worse than being disappointed, and when it comes to a comparison to one of my all time favorite dining establishments, it's pretty hard to live up to that kind of hype. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't like our expensive meal there wasn't good. It was quite enjoyable actually. The decor of Heirloom is very modern and trendy. Similar to Barcelona near The Omni, but with a more airy and urban twist. This place feels like it could be in a W hotel with those comfy leather couches in the bar area. But the food, while it was fresh and I'm sure locally sourced, just wasn't that great or memorable. Eating for me is like a religious experience and my soul was far from touched after this meal. Caseus never misses the mark, and with its casual, laid back dining room has none of the pretentiousness that a chic place like Heirloom inherently has. We were a table for 4 so we started with the Ploughman's Plate, which had very generous portions of house & cured meats, salumi, artisan cheeses, housemade pickles, marmalade, and toast. Check out the pics I posted and you can basically see the fungus moving in that slab of blue cheese. This is a great sharing app and the appetizers in general is something that I'd come back for time and time again. We also got the bone marrow, which was a little skimpy on the marrow. We probably got enough for one spreadable fatty marrow's worth each. It wasn't that flavorful or rich either. Definitely forgettable and not a great value. For my entree I was trying to be "healthy" and foolishly ordered the artic char. I'm not a huge fish guy in general and had no idea it would be so fishy tasting. The artic char was served over brussel sprouts, chorizo, delicata squash all in a saffron cinzano brodetto. Sounds fancy right?? The plating was pretty gorgeous as you can see from the pic I posted, but flavor wise it didn't do it for me. For a $25 entree I left wanted something else. I had some of my wife's carbonara and that was actually pretty solid. The spaghetti carbonara had housemade pancetta, local duck egg and parmigiano. The fresh made pasta was a nice touch to that egg yolky sauce. I'd recommend this dish if you're a pasta lover and the flavor almost justifies it's $22 price. I've been back to Heirloom for drinks because I do like the ambiance and decor. Plus it's pretty easy to snag a whole big couch section for you and your friends as your people watch out the floor to ceiling windows. Not that there's much to see on Chapel St because come on, we're talking about New Haven here!! read more

Concept. Vibe. Decor. Ya, they have that. Had an excellent extra dirty 3olive martini & it was immediately apparent that the bartender was talented. Also enjoyed nice glass of sauvignon blanc from Washington that was crip not overtly citrusy light fruit- sry name escapes me. Enjoyed the cod fritters. A bit too large- I would have preferred them to be smaller bcz content vs exterior crunch was not even & I like crunch to accompany the creamy interior. Speaking of that, cod was ample, tad salty, creamy potato (?) base, buttery but not greasy. Served w a smoky creamy tomato based sauce which I did not care for. I just like Tabasco & lemon. The ambiance created in the lounge area is so relaxing yet contemporary enuff to start/end your evening out too. Looking forward to going again w friends for dinner. read more

It was love at first sight (and bite!) at Heirloom - I never wanted to leave! I came here for an early brunch on a Saturday with my sister and was thrilled to find some bar seats open as they apparently fill up with reservations far in advance. Absolutely stunning decor - modern, simplistic, and I especially loved all the floral accents and greenery that decorated the tables and wall fixtures. Great that they also support local Yale art students with their art throughout the restaurant. The service was exceptional - friendly, helpful, and attentive. The bartender overheard my sister say she gave up alcohol for lent (bless her soul), and made her one of the best virgin cocktails I have ever had! I thoroughly enjoyed my Jack & the Beanstalk: Plymouth Gin, fresh grapefruit and lemon juices. My food choice was a tough one - literally everything on their brunch menu sounded fantastic. I saw the bananas foster french toast whiz by several times and was tempted, but decided to save the inevitable diabetic coma for my next visit. Per our bartender's recommendation, I went with the Huevos Estudiados: smoked turkey, black beans, cojita cheese, avocado slices, red onion, salsa rona, fresh cilantro & two fried eggs with a delicious cornbread muffin. The only thing wrong with this dish was that it disappeared from my plate too quickly and left me craving more. My sister had the Stongington Red Shrimp & Grits: heirloom chorizo, green onions, lemon, creme fraiche over cheddar antebellum grits. Also delicious! I cannot wait to come back to try their lunch and dinner menus! A total home run. read more

I must've been living under a rock. Before today, I don't ever remember having been to this part of New Haven. Nestled in The Study at Yale, you might not know that this place even exists. Don't bother parking your car, who knows where you'll find a spot. Valet service is offered at the main entrance to the building. Tip: When you visit Heirloom, and you should visit, request Karissa as your server. Karissa was very friendly and attentive. She is sure to make your visit as enjoyable as ours was. Let me just warm you, copious amounts of food were consumed during this adventure. Joining me on this trip, was my husband, his mother and our son. We were seated for Saturday Brunch, at 11:00 am (just before the crowds). While looking over our menus, we snacked on fresh muffins and croissants, served on a heated skillet. We sipped on Mimosas and coffee, along with bottled water. After many minutes of deliberation, we decided to splurge on a 1/2 dozen of Island Creek Oysters. They were clean, fresh and full of briny goodness. The cocktail sauce that accompanied them, was just spicy enough and not too overpowering. Next we were served the Hot Caramel-Apple Doughnuts, almost popover like in texture, but similar to an apple fritter. These doughnuts are served with a honey and vanilla sauce, but are sweet enough with their simple cinnamon and sugar dusting. Finishing off our first round, a waiter delivered unto us, a ceramic dish filled with a creamy ricotta, topped with fresh thyme and truffle oil. I quickly grabbed the dish spread this atop a piece of warm, crusty bread...I was in Heaven. As we finished snacking, 3 servers came out with our entrees. My husband ordered the Ploughman's Plate, a board with assorted meats, cheeses, pickles, marmalade and toast. My mother in law had chosen the Banana's Foster French Toast, Brioche covered in pecans and caramel toffee bananas and topped with a bourbon butter pecan gelato. I had decided on the Smoked Maine Trout Melt. This open faced sandwich is served on a 2" thick piece of wheat toast, with radish, capers, pickle and provolone cheese. The fish is served as a spread, which is also a part of their Coastal Platter. While we were all very impressed with our meals, not one of us could eat more than half. We left with a very large "doggie bag", full tummies and smiles on our faces. We can not wait to go back and check out the dinner menu. read more

We've now since been to Heirloom for dinner. My friend chose this spot for her birthday. I know Heirloom is fancy but their menu was *fancy.* Those asterisks are kind of a bad thing. They have a smallish menu with nothing inexpensive. I never really understand when a place offers appetizers that are more expensive than the meal, but that's me, and I'm a self-proclaimed cheapo. For dinner, I decided on a pasta and shrimp dish. I was unimpressed. It had *too* many flavors. (It's not on their menu now or I'd list them). It had mint and maybe...lemongrass? Too much overall - I just wanted a nice, spicy marinara type sauce and it was too many clashing flavors. My fiance ordered a chicken dish and on the online menu it had said it came with potatoes and the menu at the restaurant omitted those. Probably cost the same. Service was a bit slow, too, for a night where the restaurant was not busy. Our waitress came around a few times, but didn't think to ......bring the check? Ask about dessert? By choice, our group was there for 4 hours, I guess, but I think the waitress could've sped things up a bit. Honestly, we like this spot for a nice glass of wine but I'm not rushing to come back for dinner. read more

I don't know quite how to describe this place. It is, after all, a hotel restaurant and serves the usual suspects. For breakfast, salads, frittata, pancakes, and eggs. For lunch, things get more interesting: clams and oysters on the half shell, quinoa bowl, grilled cheese with smoked tomato cream soup, tuna melt. Dinner gets even more interesting: duck breast, Maine lobster bucatini, an oyster bar, and lamb ragu. Everything (except the coffee, I presume) is locally sourced and on the exotic side. They have a blackboard listing the origins of the ingredients. The chicken salad is made with currants, curry, pickle, and dill mayo on a brioche. The salmon is served with jasmine rice and gingered vegetables. Since it is a restaurant in a hotel, they are open every day for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Dress and ambience are causal. Free valet parking. read more

We ate here on a Saturday night (there were some empty tables) and waited over an hour for food. Meal 2/3 of my recruiting trip. We originally planned to have a recruiting breakfast at the Heirloom with a bunch of Yale students only to have every single one of them bail on us right before it started. We had, in all its corporate excesses, planned on ordering 20 griddle cakes and a zesty helping of English breakfast fanfare: sausage, eggs, toast coming out in tin buckets courtesy of uncle Zuck himself, but we had to return all of them except for one serving each. Feeling some adrenaline rush from the rodeo of a breakfast, I slipped in a nice little treat for myself: coconut water. As I ate this pretty good brekkie, I considered how appropriate that a hotel named for Yale and designed to the Yale aesthetic harbored a restaurant named 'Heirloom.' Probably a family heirloom type thing passed down from parents to legacy admit students accepted to the school. But the food I was eating was anything but old. Pretty good, but nothing special so no 5 fo you. read more

I've breakfasted here more often than any other place in town. The food here is good, it really is, but it is pricey so be warned. If you're coming here for a dinner date, you're shelling out over a hundred bucks. Breakfasts are a delight. I usually come after an overnight shift to enjoy scones and mimosas. The avocado toast is delicious. But you can arguably make better toast with Costco guacamole, a loaf of bread from G Cafe, and a fried egg (and all of that will still be cheaper). Dinner is an upscale combination of farm-to-table veggies, fish, and other seafood. It's fresh, and the flavors aren't dull but they're not explosive either. I guess this cuts the heart of exactly how strong/flavorful you want your food to be. For some folks, this is perfect. For me, if I'm spending this much on dinner, I want to be blown away with inventive flavor combos. Dessert is pretty bomb, and I think this is where Heirloom shines. Their donuts are always a hit. I frequently bring groups of friends just for sweets, and we'll order a bunch of desserts to pass around. These are the Heirloom experiences I've enjoyed most. read more

This restaurant is a part of the Study hotel and it is definitely one the most popping attached-to-a-hotel eateries that I have ever seen. Definitely for good reason: The food here is pricey but generally worth the $$$. I've had everything from snacks like fried chicken, spring rolls, and meat and cheese platters to full on entrees like steak and sea bass. Generally, they have all been highly satisfying. The portion sizes are also generous. Came here for dinner last night and both the fish and steak in particular stood out: The fish was extremely tender and absolutely melted in my mouth. The seasoning was on point. The steak was also good (make sure to get it medium rare though as opposed to well done as medium really allows the flavors to come out). The drinks here are super strong. They have a variety of cocktails, wines, beers-just about every type of alcohol you may want. Last night I tried the Shiso Grande, a rum-based fruity drink that the bartender mixed for me, and the 20 year port for dessert. Wasn't the hugest fan of the Shiso Grande (vodka-based with strawberries)-was a little too sweet but overall pretty enjoyable. I really liked the special drink the bartender mixed (also thought it was great that this was an option) and the port for dessert was a great finish to the evening. Service here is generally good. We were with a large party celebrating a birthday and everyone was well attended throughout the evening. Decor is classy/intimate. Good for date night. Overall, would definitely recommend! It's a little too pricey for everyday go-to dining, but worth the investment once in a while for sure! read more

Summary: Service was extremely poor and untrained and food was poor to mediocre. We arrived and ordered a bottle of wine. It took 30 minutes for that wine bottle to appear. In the mean time a waiter brought us bread and "butter" simply dropping them at the table with no description, which is somewhat acceptable if this was traditional bread and butter, but after putting it on my bread I realized it was a horseradish butter, which should have been previewed. The clams casino were a salt bomb in your mouth as was the broth from the chicken and dumplings (although the gnocchi in that dish was the one strong component of the meal). We ordered the duck which when asked how we would like to done, we replied whatever the chef recommends, so perhaps I should not complain, but I have ordered duck in this way countless times and this duck was rarer than I have ever seen to the point where it was unenjoyable. When we arrived and saw salt and pepper on the table we should have known this was not going to be a foodie experience, but was still disappointed given the prices. read more

The service and ambience were very nice here. Unfortunately the food left a bit to be desired. My partner and I got the campfire mushrooms and burrata for appetizers, which we enjoyed. My partner got the lamb Ragu for his entree, which he also enjoyed. I got the roast chicken fricasse, which was salty to the point of being inedible. The couple at the table next to us got the exact same dishes, and had to switch their dinners because the chicken dish was unbearably salty. It was not worth the price! Hopefully this issue can be fixed as this is a nice place with nice staff. read more
