My husband and I dine at Heirloom a couple of time a year when we're visiting the beach, and it never disappoints. Heirloom feels like dining in your most creative friend's home--if that friend happened to be a talented chef with an eye for whimsical design. Shaker style chairs surround wood tables, while houseplants, books, art and knickknacks are full of character. The farm-to table menu is enticing, featuring dishes that highlight the best of the seasons. This month that included radishes, peas and rhubarb, each plate arriving as a small work of art that tastes even better than it looks. Our server, Angel, seemed to genuinely care about our experience, checking in at just the right moments without hovering. Most refreshingly, the space maintains a gentle hum of conversation rather than battling against pounding music, making it the rare restaurant where you can actually hear your dinner companion. AVOID THIS SPOT AT ALL COSTS! Do not let this restaurant fool you! We had the most AWFUL experience tonight. It felt surreal. The hostess (and self-proclaimed owner) greeted us and the family in front of us a rude, stand-offish manner from the moment we walked in the door for our 5:15 reservation. I believe she was snapped at us because both we and the family in front of us had asked for a high chair or booster seat, which she proudly declared in a demeaning tone that the restaurant was not inclusive of children as she wanted the vibe to be fine-dining and she 'choose not to spend her money on booster seats or high chairs'. She did not bother trying to accommodate in any way, so the family in front of us scoffed at her response and lack of empathy and walked out. Our family, however, chose to stay and stick it out with a 20-month-old because there was no other restaurant in Lewes we could get into so last minute. (Trust me, we called around and made EVERY effort to find somewhere else to go). While we waited to decide if we were going to keep the reservation we made from Open Table, the same hostess/owner chimed in to our conversation to remind us the clock was ticking and that they'd be kicking us out at 6:45 sharp either way. This was AFTER she had even gone far enough to claim I hadn't reserved my table for outdoor dining (which I always purposely do done with the toddler in mind). This was again, incredibly rude and laughable at this point. Might I add, on the inside, the restaurant doesn't remind you ambiance-wise of "fine dining" and there is nothing online or on open-table that would make you feel under that impression. The menu was great and very unique which is originally why we chose it but doesn't scream fine-dining, either. There was also no notice on Open Table or online stating children were not allowed or that they had no booster seats or high chairs available to their guests. We saw other small children dining there, so I felt very discriminated against. When you go on Open Table, you'll see similar reviews of this hostess/owner being rude to other customers, so it was interesting to find out we were not the only ones with a poor customer experience. Funny enough, since the hostess/owner and other staff knew how catastrophic our customer experience was, they cancelled my reservation retroactively on the Open Table app to avoid me being able to write a review to expose the truth in a review on the app. (Pictures of the confirmation of our dining there and pictures of after the staff switched the reservation to suddenly reflect as "cancelled" after we left.) Our waitress (K) was sweet and none of this was her fault-- it was all on the owner/hostess originally, but later in the meal the waitress was not accommodating to dietary needs or requests. This restaurant needs new management and a new vibe ASAP! We were in town for a family funeral. We all get together so infrequently and we decide to make reservations for 18 for dinner at Heirloom. We were all in two rooms and three tables. The rooms we a bit nondescript but the food was fabulous. I had the scallops with crisp sunchokes and oyster mushrooms. It was a wonderfully composed dish and I would definitely order it again and again. It was that good. Others in the party thought the Lancaster chicken was awesome. I also heard compliments on the butternut squash soup and the tres major steak. I really liked the portion sizes of food. I didn't feel stuffed or that I had over eaten. I would definitely recommend this restaurant for an upscale meal. If you are looking to feed your face and want plain Jane food go somewhere else. If you are a foodie and like upscale food this the place I also have to mention that Caitlin our waitress and the rest of the waitstaff was wonderful especially with our large group and we sat around talking long after other patrons had left and we never once were made to feel like it was time to leave. read more

Adding those screenshots to this review. Enjoy! I've been to Heirloom about 5 times and have generally always enjoyed the food. Unfortunately, my latest experience left much to be desired on the hospitality side and with some serious concerns regarding patron safety. I made a reservation for an early dinner on a recent Tuesday and unfortunately had to cancel due to an illness (respiratory symptoms) in our party. I had missed their call to confirm the reservation, but called back multiple times soon after, reaching the voicemail each time. Finally, we left a message canceling our reservation, as we didn't want to risk the health and safety of other diners. At 4:30 (45 min before our reservation) I received a cancellation email from OpenTable; it seemed all was well. However, I later noticed Heirloom had charged my credit card $100. A few issues with this: a) I hadn't provided Heirloom with my credit card. Making a reservation with OpenTable, Heirloom will have access to your credit card information to use as they please. Be wary when making reservations. b) Heirloom is not taking the health of patrons or staff through this pandemic seriously. We canceled out of caution to keep others safe and they would have rather we came. To me, this raises concerns about how they handle staff illness as well. Be careful dining here if you are immunocompromised. I dine out daily and understand the struggle some restaurants are having, particularly with cancelations and no shows. However the restaurant was fairly empty that day (at the time of the cancellation OpenTable had every time available for dining that evening). So they did not lose any business as a result of us canceling. We did reach out after the charge and the restaurant made it clear they would rather lose a repeat customer than refund the $100. read more

Without question, the finest meal I've been served in quite some time. Whomever is in the kitchen clearly knows their stuff. Service is friendly, attentive, and very good. The space is elegant, intimate, and quiet - but not so quiet that you hear everyone else's conversation. The food was absolutely on point - and much better than expected (and my expectations were quite high, given the descriptions in the menu!) To be honest, I'm a complete snob when it comes to Steak Tartare - serve me something that went through a grinder, and you've lost my respect completely. What I was served at Heirloom is likely the best Tartare I've had in over a decade. Clearly hand chopped the way it should be, and seasoning was unexpected and amazing. Even the potato chips that were served with it were special - I can't say enough! It's also very difficult to perfectly cook a double-cut pork chop - but that was perfectly achieved. Tilefish had crispy skin, and the vegetables that sat below it were nothing short of decadent. Prices were high, but fair, given the creativity and quality that was presented. Our first visit to Heirloom was last summer and I thought it was really good. Our second visit was last weekend and this time I thought it was really great! We had a party of 7 so we were seated at the large table in the lovely room with views into the kitchen - which looked spotless, well organized, and efficient. The winter menu had so many good options to choose from. From the the fabulous bread to the starters and entrees, and straight through to dessert each course was delicious. Our options felt like dishes you couldn't walk into any restaurant and order. I chose the 5 hour red wine braised short rib over horseradish grits with broccoli rabe. It was so tender it pulled apart with the slightest touch of the fork. The depth of the flavors was mouth watering, and the sides were delicious and all served with beautiful presentation. As if that wasn't enough, the rice pudding was the perfect sweet treat to end the evening with. It looked so pretty and tasted so good! Had the Shishito Peppers with Pimento Cheese as a starter (10/10 recommend), my husband loved his Pork Chop and I had the scallops. The Basil Gin Gimlet(s) were exceptional. Heirloom is an absolute gem - charming interior & outdoor seating space, a fantastic seasonal menu, and delicious drinks. We ordered a few dishes to get started, a seasonal salad & the burrata. Both were delicious, but the burrata was a stand out! So creamy & just the right amount of fruity acid with the blueberry sauce, and a nice crunch from the pecans. I also got the blueberry margarita, which was perfectly strong & smoky from the mezcal. My husband got the old fashioned, which he also enjoyed. We had one date night during our week at the beach -- thank you grandparents for watching the kids -- and Heirloom was very, very worth it. The restaurant is an old Victorian home with red shutters -- we sat on the patio and had perfect August evening weather. My wife is a cocktail fanatic and could not say enough good things about the housemade milk punch (which has clarified milk as an ingredient, although doesn't look milky -- the color is more like iced tea). She also had the cantaloupe and herb gazpacho as a starter, which she said was excellent. I had the "grilled double-cut heritage pork chop" for my entree. My wife asked me who bothers ordering pork chops at a restaurant, since they tend to be dry, but I told her they hit this one out of the park. Perfectly tender and moist. My first time here and I was not disappointed. My bf and I had the most fantastic dining experience. Our favorites were definitely the starters. We ordered the asparagus & buttermilk soup, octopus, burrata, and cabbage salad. Every bite was utterly delicious and unique, whether it was the subtleness of the peas paired with the creaminess of the burrata to the perfectly fried asparagus in the soup. You can ask my boyfriend - I don't think I spoke a single word for a good few minutes except "Mmmmm." They brought out a couple of fresh-baked slices of their sourdough bread served with butter and what they called a strawberry pepper? I had never heard of such a thing, but honestly I would buy it by the jar! I only wish they served out a whole bread basket vs 2 slices of bread. For our entrees, we ordered the duck breast and tuna. Everything was tender and cooked perfectly. The only plates we decided we could have done without were the table shares - the fingerling potatoes and mushroom medley. Both were alright but nothing special, and I would have preferred to order another starter. In the grand scheme of things, this was a very minor complaint however. Our server was attentive and the drinks were made very well. If your looking for a nice dinner in Lewes this is your spot. Heirloom was awesome to say the least. Tables were spaced appropriately for social distancing and we felt very safe during the entire evening. The interior of the restaurant is absolutely adorable and is a converted Victorian home. This made the inside layout unique and cozy. Moving on to drinks and food, we were treated with a small toast of champagne because we noted on the reservation that it was our anniversary. So sweet! The bread is absolutely divine and the butter is somehow even better. Who would have thought to put bee pollen in butter? Absolutely delicious. We ordered one of the specials for our appetizer and had the the Amish chicken and strip steak for our entree. Both were delicious. My only critique of my steak was that it was a bit luke warm but that may be because of the bed of vegetables underneath. Still drool worthy. Hierloom is a must visit for anyone in the Rehoboth! I went with a friend while on vacation and it was the best meal of our trip. We went during a rainy afternoon and even though we wanted to avoid indoor eating, the rain made it impossible. They accommodated us with a table indoors even though they were full which was quite nice. We ordered cocktails and two small plates to start. The summer salad was delicious. I didn't love my cocktail but it was a preference of flavor. They also brought bread and butter which was lovely (though we wanted more bread!). I ordered the scallops and they were perfectly cooked. First of all, I love the feel insiders being inside an old restored home. We got some seats at the bar and it was the best meal I have had in a while. The turmeric margarita was sweet and REALLY strong. The sourdough bread with real whipped butter was so fresh. The cabbage salad was amazing and delicious with some peanuts sprinkled in. We really enjoyed the Kennett mushrooms as well. I got the heirloom veggie bowl which came with a side of whipped beats in cream. It was delicious. My husband really enjoyed the agnolotti. Restaurant is a little stuffy. This is the beach. Even fine dining needs to be a little more relaxed. Pretty place. Great wines and drinks. I found the food to be mediocre. We all got different entrees. Steak , raviolis, pork chop and chicken. All of us had to use lots of salt. Some of the vegetables tasted a little burned/ overdone. Seems like the sauce for all the proteins is the same. The only really yummy thing we all enjoyed was the burrata and sourdough bread. Unfortunately, I don't think I would revisit. read more

Wife and I dined here on 3 July. Everything was simply amazing. We started off with a cheese plate that was terrific. I never thought I would be gushing about a cheese plate, yet here we are. Everything that was paired with it was incredible. I've never had pickled rhubarb and now I want a whole jar of it. Wife ordered a martini that was not on the menu, she wanted a cucumber martini and they were only happy to accommodate. She ordered the scallops and was blown away. Everything was perfectly portioned and delicious. It was satisfying yet not heavy. I ordered the flank steak and it too was incredible. I also was completely satisfied. We had reservations for 4 people on Saturday 2/15. Our daughter in law was unable to join us at the last minute as she had a family emergency in PA. When we told the hostess, who we since found out is the owner, we would be a party of 3, we were lectured on their policy and told that if that happened again we had better call the restaurant to let them now our numbers have changed. When our daughter tried to explain that someone was dying, the owner totally ignored us and just gave menus to the hostess and told her to seat us. Once we got to the table, my daughter asked me quietly if I thought the owner was being rude. I agreed that she was. Immediately the owner came rushing over to our table and in a loud voice told us that she was not being rude and reminded us again about their policy (which is more a cancellation policy and 3 of us were there, so no cancellation). At that point, we were extremely uncomfortable so I asked my daughter (whose birthday we were celebrating) if she would prefer to dine somewhere else, and she said yes. When we got up to leave, my daughter went up to the owner and explained that she was a resident of Lewes and they have had wonderful experiences there which was why she chose it for her birthday dinner. And then again reminded the owner that a family member was dying which was why we had a table for 3, not 4 people. The owner was very smug and said she recently lost her father but basically had no sympathy for my daughter's situation. As we were walking out the door, my daughter turned around and told the owner she was being disrespectful. At the point, the owner yelled " Get the F- -k off of my porch!" My daughter said you can't speak to me that way at which point the owner got in my daughter's face and said "What are you going to do about it?". I have worked in restaurants and we dine out weekly and I have never in my life had such a horrible experience in a restaurant before. I am expecting the owner to come back with a snarky response and well as a way to make her bad and unprofessional behavior our fault as she feels it is okay to treat her customers with disrespect. We ended having a lovely dinner at another Lewes establishment so the evening was saved. Would give this no stars but can't leave the review without at least 1 star. read more

Overall, pretty good. Expectations were very high, as the hype surrounding Heirloom is very real, and very intense. Atmosphere is lovely, the building itself is an old family home. A nice one. Greeting was friendly, service was very nice. Champagne? Cold. Check. Before discussing the food, let me say that I'm a traditionalist. Boeuf Bourguignon, key lime pie, and roast chicken have been around forever for a reason. My personal preference is for traditional plates perfectly executed, Heirloom does none of that, so my bias will show against. I ordered the torchon of fois gras with accompaniments. Said accompaniments, IMO, were almost painfully local and seasonal, which in this case didn't meld with the liver, nor offer a big enough contrast to be interesting. For instance, blueberries are in season, so they randomly put some on the plate. I don't get it. The foie gras was perfectly executed, and was a nice fatty foil against the acid of the champagne. Wife ordered the ceviche, which she finished, but did not rave about. The homemade sourdough was absolutely a highlight. Delicious, with perfect sourdough texture. Mains were scallops for me, rockfish for her. The scallops were perfectly fresh and seared beautifully. The best I've had. There were four served if I remember correctly, over some kind of grains, with a nice schmear of tasty sauce. According to wifey, the fish was a bit dry, but was helped by the included sauce. Presentation of the plates was really beautiful, composed like a Dali painting, executed perfectly. French press coffee was delightful. Overall, three stars. Owner Megan was very rude/unkind to my wife and I on the phone. She cancelled our reservation and refused to allow us to book another one (this was our anniversary dinner my wife had been planning for weeks as we told Meg) because my wife's mother had cancelled her reservation (both made by my wife) for the day before with only 2 hours notice. My wife began crying on the phone because she as so upset so I spoke to Megan and explained that the cancelled reservation was another party and that we very much wanted to keep ours. She said absolutely not that they wouldn't honor our reservation. I asked if we could make another reservation and she said they wouldn't allow. At that point I was pretty upset to and said "so your saying just out of spite you are going to hold the cancellation of another party against us? That's crazy you can't be serious? What's my recourse to leave a review about how you are treating us online?" And her reply was "ha, ya, good luck with that" and then she hung up on me. We were also fined 50$ for the 2 reservation cancellations (25 each, although Megan cancelled one of them, not us). Funny thing is we saw Megan the next night at her restaurant anyway (used another name to make wife happy). Food was pretty good. But I don't think I saw a single server smile. They all looked anxious or afraid honestly. And now I know why. read more

I am thankful that we decided to check this place out! Based of the 4.5 stars on yelp and the funky American New food photos on yelp I wasn't expecting to be able to get a table last minute. However, when we called and said we were around the corner we were surprised to be seated immediately. The food was even better than the pictures, layers of texture, complex flavors and attention to detail in every dish had us wanting more and we quickly decided this was our new favorite place to come when at the beach! Heirloom serves the type of food that your remember for a long time. I often regret anytime I have left an uneaten bite on a plate. The team is great (we love Jackie, Ian and Zack) and Meghan loves her business and product (you can tell how she lovingly explains various dishes). We love their charcuterie plates and the chicken liver pate is to die for (and I do not usually like chicken livers). So good in fact we have often ordered a jar to go in order to serve at a dinner party at home or to bring as a gift to a party. The audacity of the owner's deceitful, inaccurate and condescending response to my spouse's June 25 review warrants a follow up, to provide the correct version of events to customers. While it is correct that the restaurant staff had masks when we arrived, the hostess only donned it after we specifically asked her to do so, and made no genuine effort to keep her mask on correctly despite us pointing out that her mask did not fully cover her mouth and nose. If Heirloom is trying to communicate to patrons that they are going above what the State of Delaware is requiring, ensuring staff use masks consistently and correctly is the least they can do to reassure customers who may have concerns about being protected from a highly transmissible virus. While it's also true that the hostess informed me (my spouse was waiting outside initially) that outdoor seating was suspended due to the impending thunderstorm, and did show us the area where we would be seated, your claim that my spouse touched all the tables is a blatant lie and frankly completely illogical. If we are so concerned about our protecting ourselves from COVID by requesting outdoor seating and social distance, why on Earth would be start touching surfaces in the restaurant? Your claim makes no sense. We simply viewed the seating area, and when we realized that the tables were close together and masks weren't required for patrons, we informed the hostess that we weren't comfortable with the seating arrangement. At that point the hostess did not, as you claim say "perhaps it's too soon to be dining inside", but instead said "well perhaps this is not the restaurant for you". This is a pretty big difference in tone and meaning, and it's hard to not take that as a suggestion that we are not the "right" type of patron that Heirloom is comfortable providing service to. It's also very condescending and disrespectful to claim that my spouse was "high energy" and "negative" when in fact she simply expressed concern about the lack of social distance for the indoor dining space. If that is the restaurant's take on people who have legitimate concerns about their personal safety then it's a poor reflection on the lack of regard that Heirloom and it's ownership have towards providing a safe and welcoming environment for its customers. My spouse and I have been vacationing in Lewes for many years now and this is the first time that we have been treated in such a disrespectful manner by any of the restaurants that we've visited in downtown Lewes (and we've been to all of them at least once at this point.) It's frankly quite shocking and disappointing that for a restaurant that touts itself as a fine dining experience that they would resort to lies and internet trolling in response to a negative review, rather than actually taking the time to inquire why we had a negative experience. Surely you can do better than that, unless you assume that your restaurant can get by only on the quality of its food and no regard for appropriate customer service. Lastly, while your hostess may or may not have considered our racial/ethnic backgrounds when she interacted with us, you may want to give some thought to the optics of responding to our post, where we identify as people of color, in such a rude an disrespectful way. read more

My husband and I visited Heirloom tonight for the first time. What a beautiful setting. We were lucky to be able to eat outside. It was one of the best meals we have ever eaten-the drinks, bread, salad and vegetarian bowl. We don't usually get dessert, but we couldn't resist ordering the S'mores. It was a pleasure to get a vegetarian meal that was so wonderfully flavored. Thanks for making our last night in Lewes so special! read more

There's a reason this place is busy. Ambiance, staff, and food is all amazing! We loved how the staff all worked together to make the experience great. We were started off with some complementary light, fluffy bread with two types of homemade butter. Next we had the Birchrun Hills Farm, PA cheese board. Just the right amount of cheese and accompaniments. It was very good!. We shared a Chesapeake crab salad- the crab tasted fresh as did all the ingredients. I ordered the scallops and my husband had the ravioli. My scallops were cooked to perfection, and the popcorn cream was out of this world. My husband's ravioli was also very tasty. We ordered a side of blistered Shishido peppers with pimento cheese which again- was excellent! For dessert we have the Butterscotch Chip Cookie Cake- which I am not going to lie was a little dry but has good flavor. I definitely recommend making a reservation for this place and trying it while you're in Lewes. Delicious!!! read more
