Came here for dinner with a friend and decided to share. The restaurant offers tasting menu with wine pairing or à la carte. We got à la carte. We started with the beet salad which had grapefruit tomatoes and arugula.very nice! Then we ordered the mussels but we thought it would be in shells but it came in a soup bowl with a big piece of bread. Very good too. Then the main courses were Duck confit (which is in the tasting menu) also very good and braised short ribs (while it was a large portion the beef was a extra salty and would have been great if it weren't so salty) - not sure what happened to that dish as I love short ribs. Heirloom Cafe is a cozy and inviting neighborhood establishment. The dim lighting and rustic interior make it great for a date night or an intimate gathering. Upon entering we were greeted as if we were long-time regulars. Our server Alyssa was attentive, kind, and conversational. chicories, shaved fennel, arugula, Manchego, Josey Baker croutons, goddess: A wonderful start to the meal. All the vegetables were fresh, with a crisp and vibrant quality. The salad tasted strongly of the Manchego, with aged, tangy notes present throughout. The sourdough croutons helped mellow out the strong flavors wonderfully. My only complaint is that I think the salad could have been better coated, as a whisper of the arugula's acridity was noticeable. bacon and onion tart: Deceptive simplicity executed with elegance. The textural interplay between the crisp meaty bacon, the savory-sweet onion jam, and the laminated tart, all on a bed of arugula was divine. I especially appreciated the slightly acidic arugula dressing, which cut down on the strong umami of the rest of the dish. PEI mussels out of their shells, roasted fennel, sherry broth, griddled toast, parsley: Our favorite dish of the night. The mussels were cooked à point, providing a beautifully bouncy bite. The soup had a delectable maritime sweetness, that was strengthened by the sherry broth. The griddled toast was the crown jewel, it was the perfect canvas, with a soft top layer to absorb the soup, and a structurally-sound bottom. Liberty duck confit, riesling braised cabbage, thyme-spaetzle, maitake, mandarinquat mostarda: Executed well, but perhaps too ambitious with it's flavor choices. The duck yielded tender meat beneath crackling skin. However, the mostarda intense citrus notes left little room for other flavors. What should have been a ballet of flavors became a mandarinquat-dominated performance. ginger cake, citrus crème anglaise, honeyed sesame pecans: Prepared well. The finishing notes of ginger were warming, which contributed to the comforting nature of the dish. Paired against the cool, silken crème anglaise it provided a unique dichotomy. But ultimately, compared to the rest of the night this dish came across as quite pedestrian. read more

We came here for the Valentine's meal, although we didn't get the set dinner everything was still a great experience! Between the two of us we had the bread and butter, mussels, winter soup, black cod, and gnocchi. Honest notes: the mussels were deshelled which was convenient, but they soaked up a little too much saltiness for my liking. The bread that came with it though was warm, buttery, and perfectly crispy. The black cod was slightly overcooked and lost a bit of that tenderness you'd expect from such a soft fish. The standouts were the housemade sourdough, which was perfectly tart with a dense chew and paired so well with the Strauss butter. The winter soup was genuinely the star of the show, hearty and full of umami. If it comes back in season, you have to try it! The gnocchi came with truffle on the house, light sauce, bouncy and buttery with the mushrooms standing out~ Service was impeccable, fresh plates between every dish. Bacon and onion tart arrived promptly and quite tasty (sweet/salty) on a soft pastry base but was slightly undersized. Gnocchi (with sausage, chives, kale) were pillowy, charred with melt-in-the-mouth goodness. Duck confit very thoughtfully prepared: juicy, unexpectedly tender, well-portioned duck meat (perhaps intentionally under-salted) dusted with crispness on top (sans skin). The presence of maitake mushrooms, pole beans and sweet mission figs presented a delectable dilemma: how best to create a forkful of contrasting taste. Dessert: chocolate pot de creme consisted of crisp wafer crumbling on a sea of luxuriant chocolate custard under softly whipped cream. Bresca Dorada (vermouth) has an unusual golden hue, infused with herbal freshness, an unmistakable bitterness, almost like a subtly mixed drink. Service was prompt and unpretentious. read more

Our server brought water, olives and almonds and extra olives for my wife with almond allergies so she can try the yummy olives. The duck was perfect, the 3 cheeses with toast paired perfectly with the Bordeaux. The smoked trout was very well seasoned and balanced nicely with the pickled cauliflower. The hanger steak was super tender and flavorful with no dairy!!! Wine paring is excellent. The selection of French wines is reasonable and great for food pairing. I think the josey baker sourdough beats tartine country bread! The warm Chocolate cookie with ice cream was delicious, the polenta cake with cream and rhubarb was shockingly good! I'd been meaning to come to this place for sometime and after finally doing so I am pleased to have finally done so. I found it rather easy to make a list minute online reservation and upon arrival was delighted by the soft, rustic, warm and traditional ambiance this place offered. The hostess was friendly and our server was knowledgeable and made good recommendations. As for the food; I was extremely surprised by how "limited" the menu was -- there really are not a lot of options to choose from. Only a couple appetizers and a few entrees, with options to add soup, salad and a side or two. Nonetheless, we were able to piece together a pretty good experience. We ordered the bread+butter and the beet salad as an appetizer, and I ordered the short rib while my parter ordered the cod as entrees. All the food was prepared perfectly and tasted great; the only food complaint was from my partner who doesn't like eating the skin on fish (though I didn't personally mind it). Outside of the limited menu, my only other grievance is that prices were very high. It's SF, and I expect to pay on the high side for a good dining experience, but $20 for a salad and $40+ for an entree is somewhat extreme. I think if they dropped their prices by 15 to 20% it'd be a bit more equitable considering the establishment and food preparation quality/quantity. While I certainly won't make this place my regular weekly/monthly outing destination; I will likely revisit in the future (though I'm not sure how often they "refresh" their menu or introduce new items -- I'll inquire in advance prior to revisiting). I would recommend for folks looking for a nice higher-end dining experience to try this place out, at-least once. read more

Last night was our first visit to Heirloom Cafe, and it was for a much-needed Date Night. Walking in, the maître d' asked if they could take our coats, which is a nice touch. We were seated at a corner two-top that was perfect for our purposes. We thoroughly debated the merits of the prix fixe menu but ultimately decided on starters, entrees, and desserts from the à la carte menu. I began with the mussels - the white wine-pastis in the sauce was a surprisingly delicious touch! For my entrée, I chose the chicory Caesar salad with smoked trout. And here is one of the reasons we really enjoyed Heirloom Cafe and will be back: for the most part, the menu is very vegetable-forward. The Caesar salad for example had just flakes of smoked trout scattered throughout -- and that was enough for a beautifully savory dinner salad. For my dessert, I asked for the cheese plate off the main dinner menu, and it was perfect. With all of this, I had a very nice 2019 Vouvray Extra Brut, and with dessert a 2023 Tokaji. All in all, it was an excellent date night dinner -- and we'll be back! read more

This quaint restaurant on the corner of Folsom St has created sensational seasonal dishes that left us yearning for more. There was not a single dish that disappointed and was a complete revelation! I liked our service, a little stand-offish but I prefer that. I don't like when servers feel they need to pretend to be my friend to get a tip. I tip regardless. That said, the bill included a 5% fee that confused me. It kinda seems like the 5% goes to the server but I wasn't sure. So I didn't know how much to tip. Have heard about Heirloom from all my local friends, but somehow have been missing out! Went tonight for my husband's 65th birthday and it was superb. Feels like a lovely Parisian restaurant, such a good vibe, wines are amazing (and marked up so much less than most places). Mushroom and onion tart delicious, sweet potato dish memorable, duck confit, cod and even the salad worth returning for. We live nearby and will go often. The bar or sitting at the kitchen counter would be fun. Professional service and knowledge about the extensive wine list topped off the beautiful dining experience. I was hoping for a warmer neighborhood vibe. I didn't make a reservation on resy as I saw that it looked open enough. When I arrived and asked to sit at the bar the Front Manager was a bit cold and liked at his ipad and said that they "may" have just one seat available at the open bar. It took him a bit to figure out where to place me. I guess the other single person who came in after me had a reservation. It did fill up but as someone who cines alone a lot, it's a better feeling when I am treated like I am not being an annoyance for asking to sit at the bar without a reservation. I get how it all works as someone who appreciates the food service industry with a passion. I don't get why I received such a weird response to walking in. That being said, I also appreciate being seated in a place where I can socialize with the bartender, wine person and was seated at the bar where platea were being made. Dining alone is like that. It's a lovely experience to talk more about the items with a server. That being said, the woman who did tend to me was stellar. She gave me info on the wines and had a friendly, warm demeanor. In general, I always go for the tasting menu at restaurants and since Heirloom's prix fixe included a wine pairing, I was drinking that night. The food and the wine pairings were excellent. The food was rustic, straightforward and well-executed - a salad, a steak and a dessert. The highlight of the evening was that steak - there's very few things better than a steak cooked perfectly medium rare but those beans really stole the show. It's really hard to impress me these days and this entree did. I'm not a wine expert by any means but these three glasses really went well with the dishes. I was buzzed at the end of the night. Service was fabulous and I was seated at the counter - it's really my favorite spot in a restaurant with an open kitchen (it's like dinner and a show). One of the best restaurants I've been to in the Bay Area in a very very long time. Heirloom café sits in an unassuming storefront in the mission district about a 10 minute walk from Bart. The menu is astonishingly good, despite being fairly brief. We split a ton of dishes, including the olives, butternut squash soup, a fabulous little gem salad, house smoked trout toast (don't miss this!), and black cod. Everything was wonderful, simple, understated, delicious, unpretentious. We sat at the bar and drank wine for hours. Nobody rushed us. Ambience is warm and wonderful. Heirloom Cafe has delicious food, lovely service, and a charming rustic appeal. I've been here twice now for special occasions, and greatly enjoyed the experience both times. I haven't tried the set menu - we went with getting a variety of plates and sharing. I appreciate Heirloom's grounded approach with their ingredients. Some restaurants in a similar quality/price tier list seem to lean heavily into unusual ingredients/combinations simply for the sake of making something unexpected, but Heirloom generally sticks to the classics and seems to come out all the better for it.
