All of their food is amazing and flavorful!! This is the food truck I think of when I want a Gyro.

The Yelp reviews don't lie; "Hefty Gyros" is arguably one of the best Halal/Mediterranean mobile food trucks I have ever been to. Having tried their food ever since they opened their very first truck around 2013, I've been a fan ever since. And hence the name "hefty" means you are going to get a hefty amount of food that will undoubtedly fill you up. One very cool thing is that they're locally owned (out of Sacramento) and serve at many major events. This includes being at Golden 1 Center, FoodieLand, SactoMoFo, California State Fair as well as offering their truck at weddings, festivals, caterings, charities, and corporate events. I ended up eating here after checking out the all-new "Citrus Heights Food Truck Plaza" (off of Auburn Blvd/Twin Oaks Ave) which debuted in July 2026. Much to my delight, I parked in the small dedicated lot and proceeded to check out several other food trucks before settling with Hefty Gyros. As for the menu itself, it is simple yet very effective. They offer a variation of pitas (falafel for the vegetarians as well as chicken & beef/lamb), rice plates, fries (available in plain, Cajun, or Greek), hummus, and Baklava. Drinks are your standard canned soft drinks as well as a lemonade-strawberry beverage; perfect for the hot days. Since I arrived on an empty stomach (which was during the evening on Saturday 8/15/2026 at 6:00pm), I went with their "Mixed Rice Plate". This monstrosity comes fully loaded with both chicken and gyro meat over brown basmati rice, side of salad, and hummus spread in two pita breads. I complete my meal with one of their "Lemonade-Strawberry" drinks. After making my payment, I was handed a small pager (that would beep when my order was ready). In less than 5 minutes, my food was ready. And since I was talking with the owner/manager for a few minutes while telling him how legit their food has been over the years, he even throws in a complimentary "Baklava" to enjoy! Once proceeding to the cozy seating area (which was well-shaded) for maximum enjoyment, I opened the container as this packaging was loaded with pure deliciousness. And the weight was indeed hefty as this more than likely weighed in at nearly 1 lb! They did not skimp on the meat while the sauces were freely flowing while covering the salad, rice, and fries. Even as hungry as I was, I had to have my lady help finish this plate. All in all, this mixed rice plate hit all the high notes for me; savory, filling, and very delicious. Since this will now be a staple at the Citrus Heights Food Truck Plaza, I see myself making many future visits here. With that said and done, I am giving "Hefty Gyros" a perfect five-star rating. read more

I liked their menu offerings compared to a lot of the other fried food truck food available at the event, and their pita gyros were served on a soft pita and tasty meat and sauce. I thought the veggies were a little unconventional from my understanding of Mediterranean food, but still pretty good. The food can be a bit expensive and the portions (seeping in what you get) is pretty decent and they give you the food really quickly. I know that a food truck won't necessarily have the same quality food as compared to a regular restaurant, but I just thought the food was nothing extraordinary. I enjoyed my meal though and preferred it over the other options, but probably won't seek out this meal again. read more

I tried out this food truck about a week ago and I believe this is probably the best gyro that I have ever had. It was the perfect size and absolutely delicious. I can't have the tsatziki sauce so they replaced it with hummus. I didn't think i would like the hummus but it was absolutely perfect. The service was great. When asked what was in it, they happily told me the ingredients and provided a suggestion to replace the white sauce. The line was long but we got our food really fast. As far as ambiance... I guess they could do a little better with the menu boards but otherwise it was great. I now want to try something else in their menu if I come across their food truck again. read more

If you see the Hefty Gyros' fire engine red food truck about town, check them out. They serve up hefty hefty hefty portions of Mediterranean food. The menu consist of gyros, falafel, chicken, pita, hummus, salads, and fries. Did I mention the portion sizes are hefty?! They literally pile on the food. I ordered a chicken plate. Whoa. In one container they literally piled it on... rice, chicken, salad, fries, and pita with hummus spread already on it. Plus they are heavy handed with the white sauce. Sure the portions were huge. But my food was assembled like a Dagwood sandwich minus the bread, in layers. Saucy dressed layers. Not how I like to eat a non sandwich meal. But great for a gyro. The flavors were terrific though. Moist grilled chicken slices. Fries were hot n crispy for a hot minute, same with the cool crisp salad before the blend of layers of taste crept in which didn't take long. My salad got lost in the layers and I couldn't distinguish that stand alone flavor. read more

The chicken pita gyro for $14 is the lightest wrap ever. Just felt like you are not buying food worth $14 or missing 70% of chicken in the wrap. On top of that, the tone of serving was a bit on the arrogant side. If only the wrap was good, I would have overlooked that. However the taste on the few tiny pieces of chicken inside the gyro was good. read more

Flavor bomb! The staff were efficient and effective handling orders and food prep. The food truck dynamic is standard across most. The lack of prices on the side was a bit frustrating, I prefer to decide on my food based on the prices. We ordered a gyro which came chock full of ingredients. I think the unique ingredient is banana peppers! Super good. The meat and sauces were flavorful. $14 for one of these seems a bit steep to me, but for a quick and easy lunch, I'd recommend it. read more

Hefty Gyro is my gyro! A gyro pita and a side of falafel at Food Truck Friday in Idlewild Park in Reno from a Sacramento food truck. The pita is warm and holds together the lamb meat, tzatziki sauce and fresh vegetables just fine. It was a perfect pita wrap. The falafel was not made into patties it was more freeform chunks. Some were very crispy and others near to doughy. The taste was ok but texture off. A small cup of sauce would have helped. I enjoyed the meal but the falafel has to be in patties that cook evenly. The pita is worth another visit so stop by and try it or one of the other wonderful looking items on the menu. read more

I ordered the Chicken on Rice plate which is a HEFTY amount of food - it comes with rice, chicken, a salad, pita bread, hummus and even fries! Everything was nicely seasoned and you definitely get some bang for your buck! So filling! Service was friendly and quick! I can't really comment on the ambiance as it is a food truck, but you can tell their food is fresh and there was a longer line to order than the other food trucks that were around. They advertise prices incorrectly on the truck. The menu said $3 water and $7 lemonade. In actuality it was $4 water and $8 lemonade. I pointed this out, they didn't bother changing the advertised price which was as simple as erasing the white board marker and rewriting. They did not honor their advertised prices.
