I have been coming to this Donut shop since it was Winchells. My dad would bring me here and we would get a couple donuts, he would get a coffee and I would get a chocolate milk. Now that I've moved back to the area my son is the age I was and its now my turn to create these memories for my son. Even though the name has changed the donuts are just as good as I remember. The breakfast sandwiches are your basic bagel or croissant sandwich but they NAIL it. Winchells had the bakers dozen that came with 13, Heavenly does the heavenly dozen that comes with 14. You just can't argue with a great fluffy yeast donut covered in glaze or frosting. Now, I have left the area and traveled around a little bit and 1 donut shop really holds a place in my heart is Reno Nevadas DoughBoy Donuts. They glaze then frost their donuts kinda like Krispy Kreme but they do it with the big old school yeast donuts. If Heavenly did that... they'd be number 1 in my heart. read more

We were staying around the corner and saw Heavenly Donuts was open 24/7, so we made note for our night time donut run. We walked over around 9/10pm and the doors were locked up, but luckily we found the window. We saw someone making fresh donuts while we viewed the menu. The lady who opened up the window was friendly and explained some of their options and what was available (it was late, so they were out of some donuts). I really liked the old fashioned and we enjoyed the jelly filled, gator and twist. The raised bars were doughy and I like mine a little more light. One person serving, but it went pretty quick as there was only one person ahead of me. It was the afternoon. These donuts rank high on my list of best donuts. It's almost sacrilegious but I'll say it. Maybe even better than Marie's in Sacramento. Not only was the raised dough soft and delicious, but the icing was on the cake frosting side of consistency. You know how some donut frosting is like a thin veneer of crumbly sweetness? This was thick and substantive. Not cake frosting, not a watered down version of icing, something closer to that cake frosting. A generous coating of perfection. I was sad they did not have any krullers. Had a quick overnight stay here in Redding for a meeting in the morning. Ask my hotel any place to get a good quick breakfast. The immediately with no hesitation pointed me to heavenly donuts. When I explain, I'm not really a donut guy they said they had the best breakfast sandwiches in town. That's what I needed! It was a half block walk. When I walked in, I knew I had the right place. The bakery was open to the counter so you could see all the work being completed. They were even flying the American flag in their kitchen. As I waited, it turned out to be only three or four minutes for my food, I watched a steady stream of locals come in and grab boxes of donuts to take out to their families and their workplace. Their walk up window was "broken." The lobby was closed. And when we walked up to the drive-thru, they said they couldn't serve us cuz it was a safety issue. I asked what alternative they had for in-person, and they said to drive a car through. We did not have a car with us, so this was not possible. I get that things happen, but then offer an alternative for in-person orders, like a call # or something, or a brief lobby walk-in. We were staying at the Americana next door and the motel host recommended the donut place. We were excited and walked over obviously. Super disappointed. Best donut shop in Downtown Redding: cannot beat the prices and they were extremely reasonable. Drive thru and front door window was also available 24 hours; Open 24/7 everyday and made fresh daily. When you pass by, you'll smell the fresh donuts which might make you hungry. Coffee, donuts, and sandwiches were really mouthwatering and sweet. The breakfast sandwiches changed I know it. They are now kind of a soggy microwaved croissant. They no longer have bacon (which is wild) and the donuts were kinda stale. While the donuts are tasty, I've been disappointed the past few times I've gone. It's like the baker doesn't care about the quality of his fare. If I'm going to splurge my calories on a calorie dense donut, I want it completely covered with frosting, not a smattering & with what looks like fingers have been smeared thru it. She ain't fancy, but the doughnuts here are pretty delicious - especially the blueberry. And I recently discovered that while the coffee tastes weak on its own, when paired with a cake doughnut they meld into a lovely combination that tempers the sweetness of the confection and enhances (or more accurately provides) the coffee's flavor. I can't wholeheartedly endorse the espresso drinks because a) they're from a machine, and b) the single time I ordered one I received what I think was a hot chocolate instead, but why mess with the classic combo of doughnuts and coffee? read more
